LAKEWOOD — Alameda International’s quest for back-to-back Class 4A/3A Colorado 7 League boys soccer titles began Monday at Lakewood Memorial Field.

The Pirates (4-3-2 overall, 1-0-0 in league) started its conference schedule with an impressive 9-2 victory over Weld Central (1-8, 0-1). Alameda’s had a three-headed scoring monster with senior Brian Varela, junior Lodrigue Byamungo and sophomore Derik Gutierrez. The trio combined for eight goals and four assists against the Rebels from Keenesburg.

“We’ve got some guys who can put it in the back of the net,” Alameda coach Steve Houwen said. “That is something we’ve been working on because when we started the season it was hard to come by goals.”

The Pirates graduated six seniors from last year’s team. Houwen said all six were on the offensive side of the ball. Alameda had to find new personal to give the Pirates a scoring punch.

Gutierrez got Alameda off to a quick start Monday with a pair of goals in the first four minutes. Both were assisted by Byamungo. Varela put in the Pirates’ third goal in the 23rd minute on an assist by Byamungo. Varela returned the favor a minute later assisting on Byamungo’s first goal.

“We have to play strong and not let anything through,” Varela said of the desired style of play this season. “We need to keep shooting and making goals.”

After taking a 4-0 halftime lead, the Pirates keeps things going with Gutierrez picking up his third and fourth goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half before taking a seat on the bench. Byamungo put in his second goal and Varela scored on a penalty kick to make it an 8-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

Alameda starting goalie Casey Pruitt got into the scoring mix with the Pirates’ final goal in the 73rd minute. Weld Central did prevent the shutout with goals from senior Sergio Gonzales and sophomore David Melendez late in the second half.

“It’s nice to get into league and it’s nice to get healthy again,” said Houwen, who didn’t have the services of Byamungo for a few of games due to injury. “We played some quality opponents and that is what we need to do to get better for league.”

This is Alameda’s third year playing in the Colorado 7. Houwen has made it a point to schedule some non-league games against former 4A Jeffco foes. Alameda suffered a 2-0 loss to D’Evelyn and 1-0 defeat to Golden during a three-game losing streak the Pirates were able to snap Monday night.

“Our goal is to go back-to-back,” Houwen said about the Pirates going 6-1 in the Colorado 7 League last year in winning the conference champions. “It’s not going to be easy. It’s a good league.”

Fort Morgan and Skyview should be in the league mix. There are also some old 4A Jeffco foes who will challenge Alameda. Arvada and Conifer both moved out of the 4A Jeffco League for the next two-year cycle to play in the Colorado 7.

“This is a league we can compete in,” Houwen said of the Colorado 7. “None of our kids play club soccer. That is a real determinate when you have other schools who have club players who have been playing for a real long time.”

Alameda was the No. 18 seed for the 4A state tournament last year after winning league. The Pirates suffered a 2-0 loss to Denver North in the opening round.

“Last year was heartbreaking,” Varela said of Alameda’s state tournament loss.

The Pirates continue their journey to a conference repeat when they face Fort Lupton at 7 p.m. Thursday at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. Alameda then goes on a three-game string of road games at Englewood, Conifer and Fort Morgan.

The Rebels got a hard-fought win over Heritage on Saturday and with Chatfield’s loss to Columbine earlier in the week, they traded places this week in the rankings.

Pine Creek (No. 4) and Ponderosa (No. 7) each jumped two spots from last week’s poll.

At No. 10, Mesa Ridge is the only new team in the 4A rankings.

Thanks to a huge win over Longmont, Mead arrives to the 3A poll as the only newcomer, taking the No. 9 spot this week.

Despite Paonia receiving eight of 15 first-place votes, it’s Strasburg who lands at No. 1 in 1A. The Eagles fell only one spot to land at No. 2.

Meeker made a two-spot jump this week, landing at No. 5.

Peyton was the only new team to jump into the 1A poll, landing at No. 9.

The top seven teams overall from last week’s rankings held their position this week.

At No. 9 and 10 respectively, Pikes Peak Christian and Soroco are the two new teams in the 8-man poll.

Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 6-man with Kit Carson holding firm at No. 2.

  • Football rankings: Fort Morgan takes over at the top of 3A

Fort Morgan is the new No. 1 team in 3A football. (Brandon Boles/Fort Morgan Times)

There is a new top dog in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Following a loss to Discovery Canyon — which lands at No. 2 this week — Pueblo East fell out of the No. 1 spot and Fort Morgan took its place.

No new teams made their way into the 3A rankings, but there was plenty of movement as Lewis-Palmer (No. 5), Palisade (No. 6) and Silver Creek (No. 7) all climbed two spots.

The 1A rankings also saw a new team land in the No. 1 spot as Paonia now sits atop the poll. The Eagles topped Ridge View Academy to move to 3-0 and Buena Vista fell out of the top spot with a 16-8 loss to Platte Canyon.

The Demons come in at No. 6 this week.

Burlington is the only newcomer to the 1A poll, coming in at No. 10 this week.

A 57-0 win over Fowler helped Sargent move into the top spot in the 8-man poll with former No. 1 Sedgwick County falling to No. 3.

That was the only big change in 8-man as there were no newcomer to those rankings.

In 5A, Pomona remains and No. 1 with Mullen still on its heels at No. 2.

Only one new team jumped into the 5A rankings this week as Legend breaks in at No. 10.

Chatfield holds a firm grip on the No. 1 spot in 4A, taking 14 of 17 first-place votes.

With a win over Greeley Central on Saturday, Loveland jumped three spots to land at No. 3. Vista Ridge also climbed three spots after an impressive 24-22 win over Dakota Ridge.

With a showdown looming with No. 9 Ponderosa, Rampart is new to the 4A rankings this week. The Rams round out the rankings at No. 10.

Kent Denver holds on to the No. 1 ranking in 2A this week as La Junta makes the one-spot jump to No. 2. The Sun Devils and Tigers play each other on Friday night.

The Classical Academy jumps two spots to land at No. 3, just two weeks ahead of their league-opener against La Junta.

Manitou Springs jumps into the 2A rankings at No. 8. Through three games, the undefeated Mustangs have already matched their win total from a year ago.

Fleming got eight of 12 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot in the 6-man poll.

Cheyenne Wells made the big jump of the week, moving up two spots to land at No. 5.

At No. 10, North Park is the only new team to the 6-man rankings.

  • Football rankings: Chatfield takes over top spot in Class 4A

    Chatfield Palmer football
    (Lance Wendt/LanceWendt.com)

If no one was paying attention to Chatfield before, they are now.

Following a 50-39 win over Pine Creek in Week 1 and a 53-7 win over Palmer in Week 2, the Chargers have earned the right to be the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Chatfield is one of two new No. 1 teams this week.

The 4A rankings received a little bit of a shakeup as a Pine Creek win over Windsor lifted the Eagles to No. 3 this week.

The Wizards fell to No. 4 as a result of their Saturday loss.

Ponderosa is the only new team to break into the 4A rankings this week.

Sedgwick County is the other new No. 1 this week, taking the top spot in the 8-man rankings for the second time this year.

Sangre de Cristo comes in at No. 8 and is the only new team to the 8-man poll this week.

Pomona hangs on to the top spot in the 5A rankings thanks a weekend win over Fountain-Fort Carson.

Fairview made the biggest 5A jump of the week to land at No. 7. That’s three spots better from where the Knights were a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 5A rankings this week.

After a thrilling win over Pueblo West, Pueblo East remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings by taking 12 of 13 first-place votes.

The most turnover of the week belongs to the 3A class as it saw three new teams break into the top 10.

Lewis-Palmer lands at No. 7, Silver Creek comes in at No. 9 and Erie rounds out the 3A top 10 at No. 10.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 2A after getting Scott Yates win No. 307 of his career.

The entire top five from last week’s rankings remained intact as everyone except for No. 2 Resurrection Christian (bye) notched wins.

Weld Central is the lone team to break into the 2A top 10, coming in at No. 9.

Buena Vista hangs on to the No. 1 spot in the 1A rankings. No. 2 Paonia and No. 3 Strasburg also held firm in their positions.

Limon jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 this week.

Ellicott (No. 9) and Cedaredge (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A rankings.

A bye week resulted in Fleming hanging on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

Stratton/Liberty (No. 5) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 7) each jumped three spots from their rankings last week.

There were no new teams in the 6-man poll.

  • Football’s winning streaks heading into the 2016 season

    Buena Vista Crowley County football
    (Bill Cronin)

Heading into the 2016 season, five football teams have put together winning streaks in the double digits.

Each of those schools — Buena Vista, Pueblo East, Sedgwick County, Bayfield and Valor Christian — won state titles last season. Not surprisingly, the other champions — Windsor and Eads — also rank highly on the in-state winning streak list.

Each are chasing history. The longest winning streak in state history belongs to Limon, which won 50-straight games from 2003-06. The longest current streak nationally belongs to Pahranagat Valley, a 1A program in Nevada, which has won 93 consecutive games dating to the 2008 season. The national record is 151.

History, of course, is what makes the grueling offseason and preseason practices in triple-digit weather worth it.

Here’s a list of the longest current winning streaks of in-state football teams:

  • District baseball brackets released for first time under RPI system

    Pine Creek baseball team
Pine Creek is the No. 1 seed in the 5A baseball districts. (Josh Watt/CHSAANow.com)

Back in January, the Legislative Council approved the recommendation of the CHSAA baseball committee to fast track the use of RPI as the system to determine the playoff fields.

Wednesday saw the results of that vote for the first time as district brackets for Class 3A through 5A were released. Unlike the Wild Card system used previously, the RPI format takes into account the overall strength of schedule for each team and combines it with their win/loss record to create the field of 32 teams.

Pine Creek came away with the top overall seed in 5A, and will host this weekend. Other host schools are Regis Jesuit, Lakewood, Heritage, Rock Canyon, Grandview, ThunderRidge and Mullen.

Rock Canyon, which won last year’s 5A championship, is the No. 5 overall seed and will play Bear Creek in their first game. If they advance they’ll see the winner of Dakota Ridge and Chaparral.

Three of the final four teams left in last year’s playoff field made it back to the tournament with Grandview landing at No. 6, Chatfield at No. 26. District play will begin this weekend with the state tournament starting next week.

Mountain View leads the way in 4A, taking the top overall spot in the class. They’ll host their district where they will play Roosevelt. The winner of that game will meet the winner of Palisade and The Classical Academy.

The other host schools in 4A are Canon City, Valor Christian, Windsor, Pueblo West, Fort Morgan, Denver North and Delta.

Two-time defending state champion Green Mountain did not make it inside the top 32 teams and did not qualify for district play.

Last year’s runner-up, Lewis-Palmer, drew the No. 26 seed and will head to District 6 and play host Fort Morgan. The potential of a showdown with league rival Palmer Ridge is there as the Bears play Longmont in that same district. Lewis-Palmer swept the season series against the Bears this year.

Of last years final four teams in the tournament, only Lewis-Palmer and Ponderosa (No. 29) qualified for districts this year.

Click here for the full 4A district brackets.

    [divider]

Defending 3A champion Eaton held strong as the No. 1 team in that class all season and is the No. 1 seed coming into districts. The Reds will face Olathe in their first district game with the winner of that game playing the winner of No. 16 Lutheran and No. 17 The Academy.

University, St, Mary’s, Lamar, Faith Christian, La Junta, Valley and Kent Denver are the other host teams in 3A.

All four of last year’s final four teams in the tournament qualified for districts this year. Eaton and University are the top two teams in the brackets, Brush comes in at No. 9 and will play No. 24 Buena Vista in District 2 at Kent Denver and Sterling lands at No. 21 and will play No. 12 Colorado Academy in District 4 at Faith Christian.

The 2015-16 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected by team performance at the state meet, as well.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); and strength of a weight classification’s bracket.

  • 3A wrestling: Robertson, Fate claim third championships; Valley claims team title

DENVER — After securing the 106-pound state championship in Class 4A as a freshman, Weld Central’s Dalton Robertson had an ambitious vision.

As wrestlers mature over the course of their prep careers, naturally they tend to move up in weight classes. But Robertson wanted to go from one extreme to the other.

“My goal since my freshman year after winning 106 was, for my senior year, to win that heavyweight,” the senior said. “I wanted to be the first person to win the lightest weight and then the heaviest weight. I fell a little short, but I guess 182 isn’t bad.”

Robertson, a soon-to-be Northern Colorado Bear, won bookend state crowns, along with another his junior season, to cap off a storied career with three state championships in four seasons by defeating La Junta’s William Tyler 3-0. He also placed fifth in the 126-pound division in 4A in 2014 and won the 160-pound division in 3A in 2015.

While Robertson wasn’t the only state champion to repeat on Saturday at the Pepsi Center — five of six defending champions won again in 3A — Robertson’s wrestling journey has been particularly uncommon.

“It’s something that’s very unheard of,” Weld Central coach Jason Schellenberg said. “I think there’s a kid in California that graduated a few years back that jumped from 106 to 182, but I don’t think it’s ever happened in Colorado with that big of a jump — with undefeated seasons especially.”

Just as Robertson crossed classifications and won at multiple levels, Berthoud senior Jimmy Fate did the same during his illustrious career for the Spartans. As a sophomore, he topped all competitors in the 138-pound division in 4A. As a junior, he conquered 145 in 3A.

Finally, in his state tournament finale, Fate pinned Steamboat Springs sophomore Hayden Johnson in a mere 55 seconds for the 160-pound title to solidify his place in history as a three-time state champion.

“It’s probably the weirdest one that I’ve won just because I’m actually done now,” Fate said. “It feels great. I’m just kind of reflecting on all the people that have helped me get to where I am today. It chokes me up a little bit.”

Fate, another University of Northern Colorado signee, posted a 44-2 record in his senior year for Berthoud.

“The first one was real sweet, but I’m glad to get this one taken care of,” he said. “It just feels good to get this third one and close it out right.”

Alamosa junior Isaiah DeLaCerda (38-5, 113), Fort Lupton junior Jody Sandoval II (42-2, 120) and Berthoud senior Chad Ellis (33-2, 195) filled out the group of five that won at least back-to-back crowns. Dolores Huerta senior Marcus Garcia was the only defending champion to get taken down as he was defeated 3-2 by Sheridan junior Ricky Ayala (42-3) at 220. Freshman Brendon Garcia of Dolores Huerta went unbeaten, 41-0, with an 8-1 decision over Brush’s Caleb Cox at 106.

As for the chase for the team title, Valley overcame all challengers for their third consecutive 3A championship with 144 points.

Dolores Huerta was the runner-up with 119.5 points, Berthoud was third with 97.5, and Olathe was fourth with 94.

The Vikings from Gilcrest, coached by veteran Mike Caciari, have now won three titles in wrestling and 16 total titles in the school’s history.

The championship finals actually began with a defeat for Valley, sophomore Brandon Damian was beaten by Lamar senior Michael Johnson 9-7 in the 132-pound class, but the Vikings remained poised.

In the 170 finals, senior Macoy Flanagan tied the Colorado record for most wins in a single season by going 51-0 with an 8-5 victory over Holy Family junior Kolsen Welham.

“He’s just been dominating all year,” Caciari said. “I don’t think he’s been taken down once. He’s a great leader. That’s one of the reasons we win all these things, because he’s such a great leader.”

“It’s truly cool,” Caciari added about a trio of titles. “Every one of them has been a little different. This wasn’t decided until the finals.

“I think we just have a lot of kids who really buy in. They work really hard and they are tough, so they can be pushed hard and won’t quit. Not all kids are like that, so we have special boys.”

Junior Aaron Trujillo (48-3, 138) and senior Zach Damian (35-8, 145) also completed their weekends with gold medals for Valley. Kyle Cisneros of Jefferson (126), Jacob Jimenez of Olathe (152) and Sam deSeriere of Mullen (285) triumphed in 3A as well.

  • State wrestling semifinals: T.J. Shelton set to wrestle for a fourth title

DENVER — T.J. Shelton will have a shot at a fourth-straight wrestling championship on Saturday night.

Shelton, the Meeker senior who has won titles his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons, pinned Paonia’s Jeramiah Hillman in the semifinals of the Class 2A 170-pound bracket at the state wrestling tournament on Friday night. The match lasted 3 minutes and 58 seconds.

Now, Shelton has a chance to join elite company and become the state’s 19th four-time champion. He will face Centauri’s Chris Martin in the final.

Shelton has advanced to the finals with three pins, including a match earlier Friday in the quarterfinals.

Two sets of twin brothers advance to Saturday’s finals

The first person ton congratulate Cherry Creek senior Matt Finesilver on his win in the 5A 152-pound semifinal match was his twin brother, Josh.

Both Finesilver brothers will be wrestling for state titles Saturday night. Josh had advanced earlier in the 126-pound bracket and is looking to win his first championship.

Matt won the 152-pound title last year.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Matt said. “I probably get more nervous to watch his matches than I do to wrestle in mine.”

If the post-match behavior is any indicator, Josh probably feels the same way. Having already advanced, Josh was pacing around like a madman as he waited on his brother.

In 4A, another set of twin brothers will be trying to bring home individual titles. Grant and Hunter Willits each won state championships in 2014, but Grant was disqualified last year after missing weight the morning of quarterfinals.

    On track for three titles

Heading into Friday night’s semifinals, there were eight wrestlers who had a chance to win three titles. After the semis, all eight of those remain on track.

John Mall junior Jonathan Andreatta narrowly advanced to the championship match in 2A 120 with a 6-3 win over Moises Juarez of Monte Vista.

Pueblo County’s Hunter Willits, another junior, also won, as mentioned above via his 14-1 major decision.

The six others? Well, all pinned their respective opponents:

    • Paonia’s Bo Pipher (2A 145) over Highland’s Bryson Fogg in three minutes.
    • Berthoud’s Jimmy Fate (3A 160) beat Sergio Campos of Hotchkiss in 1:16.
    • Dalton Robertson of Weld Central (3A 182) pinned Sterling’s Patrick Holtzhauser in 1:49.
    • Sam Turner of Discovery Canyon (4A 138) beat Thompson Valley’s Braydon Besse in 1:04.
    • Fort Morgan’s Toby McBride (4A 285) fell Montrose’s Sam Distel in 29 seconds.
    • Parker Simington of Thompson Valley (4A 160) over Pueblo East’s Zion Freeman in 2:25.

Pomona’s Tomas Gutierrez also entered the tournament with two previous championships, but he fell in the quarterfinals of 5A’s 120-pound bracket.

    How other returning champions fared

Aside from that group, every other returning champion that was alive entering the semifinals advanced to a final.

That means that on Saturday evening, a total of 24 wrestlers will have a chance to repeat as champions. The breakdown is as follows: There are six returning wrestlers still alive in both 2A and 3A, nine from 4A, and three remaining in 5A.

Barker’s tournament comes to an end

Kaley Barker, the seventh girl to qualify for the state wrestling tournament, was eliminated from the competition with a loss to Thompson Valley’s Kasey Gault in the second round of the consolation bracket of the 4A 106 field.

    Gault won, 11-5.

Barker became just the fourth girl to win a match at the tournament in the first round of the consolation bracket on Friday morning.

    Team race update

The closest race is shaping up to be in 2A, where Centauri and Meeker head into Saturday tied with 110 points. Centauri has four finalists, and Meeker has three. And, of course, the two teams will face off in the 170-pound final as Shelton seeks his fourth championship.

Narrowly behind them in third place is Rocky Ford with 104.5 points.

In 3A, two-time defending champion Valley looks to have a firm grip. The Vikings lead the field with 112 points, ahead of second-place Dolores Huerta’s 91.5.

Pueblo County continues to head the 4A race, and now has 157 points. Greeley Central is second with 105.

Likewise, Pomona has held firm in 5A with 100 points. Pine Creek has 78 points, and is second. Legacy is third with 74.

    Notables

    • Highland senior Morgan Fogg advanced to the final in 2A’s 126-pound bracket with a pin of Paonia’s Sackett Chesnik in 3:46. He is actually a defending champion, having won 4A’s 113 title last season while at Thompson Valley. Fogg transferred to Highland.
    • Buena Vista’s Keegan Wentz pinned his opponent, Ethan Barnes of Norwood/Nucla in 15 seconds in the 2A 220 semifinals to reach the final. Wentz is a returning champion, having won 2A’s 182 title last season.
    • Centauri’s Zach Martin ended a perfect season for Merino’s Trevor Elliott in the 2A 106 semifinals with a 6-0 decision. Elliott is now 33-1. Martin will wrestle for a title on Saturday.
    • Another unbeaten lost for the first time when Widefield’s Kris Davis beat Aron Pino Valenzuela of Littleton in sudden victory. Davis will wrestle for a title in 4A’s 220-pound division.
