  • No. 5 Ralston Valley football off to its best start since 2014

ARVADA — Ralston Valley’s first six offensive possessions all yielded touchdowns Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“The (offensive) line gave me a great opportunity to sit back there and throw the ball all day,” Ralston Valley quarterback Walker Brickle said after throwing four first-half touchdowns. “We came in prepared and it showed.”

Ralston Valley — No. 5 in the current CHSAANow.com Class 5A football rankings — cruised to a 49-7 victory over cross-town rival Arvada West in the Class 5A Metro West League opener for the Mustangs and Wildcats.

Brickle connected with senior Caleb Rillos for touchdowns of 27 and 17 yards in the first quarter. Senior Chase Wilson had a 2-yard touchdown run and junior Tyler Roybal scored from 21 yards out on the ground.

The first four scores all came in the first quarter for Ralston Valley (6-0, 1-0 in league).

Brickle had a pair of touchdown passes to junior Devin McNearny in the second quarter. McNearny’s 60-yard touchdown with 8:40 left in the second quarter induced a running clock for the remainder of the game.

“Obviously our guys played well and did a good job,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “Defensively, it’s a broken record. They give us good field possession and the offense takes advantage of it.”

Ralston Valley has now outscored its first six opponents 265-53. It’s also the best start to the season for the Mustangs since 2014. Ralston Valley won its first 12 games before losing in the Cherry Creek in the 5A state semifinals.

That 2014 squad featured Andrew Wingard, who starred at the University of Wyoming and is currently a safety in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I haven’t even thought about that,” Loyd said when asked about the best start since the state semifinal team in 2014. “I know we have a tough league and tough opponents. We are just focused on that.”

Ralston Valley’s defense was just as impressive. Senior JJ Galbreath intercepted A-West quarterback Evan Hurlburt on the opening possession to give the Mustangs the ball on A-West’s 5-yard line.

“We knew they would come out with some passing plays. Some quick stuff when they spread it out,” Galbreath said. “I was just dropping into my flat and I broke on the ball.”

A-West (0-6, 0-1) managed one first-down in the opening half. A 16-yard pass from Hurlburt to junior Bradlee Wallen over the middle was the longest play of the first half for the Wildcats.

“We knew they would come out and be aggressive,” Arvada West coach Brad Pyatt said of facing Ralston Valley. “They came out and made some plays. We didn’t. Coming into this game I told our team we had to play clean and we didn’t play clean.”

The Mustangs kept things going in the second half. Senior Ben Takata took the opening kickoff of the second half 99 yards to give Ralston Valley a 49-0 lead.

A-West did end the shutout with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Elijah Olson with seven minutes left in the game.

Ralston Valley is on the road the next two weeks. The Mustangs are at Mullen (2-4, 0-1) next Friday before heading to Jeffco Stadium for a showdown against No. 1 Columbine (6-0, 1-0) on Oct. 18.

“It feels special, but we need to stay humbled,” Brickle said of the 6-0 start. “We have a tough schedule ahead. We’ll keep grinding and playing our game. We’ll see what happens.”

Galbreath admitted there is some pressure as the Mustangs remain undefeated through the midway point of the regular season, but the nerves go away quickly after the opening kick.

“I guess you could stay there is pressure for some people at the start of games, but after that first play good by that all goes down the drain,” Galbreath said. “We are all athletic people playing the game of football.”

A-West has another cross-town rivalry game next week. The Wildcats face Pomona (3-3, 1-0) next Thursday night at the NAAC. The No. 8 Panthers shutout Lakewood in their conference opener Thursday night at Jeffco Stadium.

“Our kids are going to keep fighting,” Pyatt said.

  • No. 2 Columbine softball ascends atop 5A Jeffco standings

LITTLETON — It was cold, damp and getting dark late Tuesday afternoon at Dave Sanders Memorial Field and Columbine’s Callie Stern decided it was time to go home.

“All I needed was a single,” Stern said of her walk-off 2-run hit in the bottom of the fifth inning that induced the 10-run mercy rule. “She (Arvada West pitcher Isabelle Schwien) wasn’t really giving me much to hit. The last pitch was there so I swung.”

Stern’s drive to right field gave Columbine — ranked No. 2 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A softball standings — the 11-1 victory over Arvada West.

“If you look back at the season she (Stern) has had so many clutch hits,” Columbine coach Jim Santaniello said. “She just lives for that moment. We call her Ms. Clutch.”

Riley Marshall and Korbe Otis scored on Stern’s hit as the Rebels could escape the temperatures that had dropped into the high-40s.

“It was definitely a great way to win,” said Otis, who got the victory on the mound while striking out nine batters in five innings of work. “You want to have that kind of energy at the end of each game.”

The victory was key in what will be a mad dash over the next 10 days to the 5A Jeffco League title. Columbine (18-2, 4-1 in league) is trying to defend its conference title, but hit an early snag with a loss to rival Dakota Ridge on Sept. 19. Santaniello admitted it was a wake-up call for his Rebels.

“I think we were tired and I think we might have been overconfident,” Santaniello said of the conference opening loss to Dakota Ridge last week. “We look at every opponent as a huge challenge.”

A-West (9-10, 3-1) came in riding a 5-game winning streak and a game up on the rest of the field in the conference standings. However, Columbine quickly took the lead with a 4-run first inning against the Wildcats.

Otis, Marshall, Emma Todd and Shea Cummings all had hits as the Rebels batted-around in the first inning against A-West starting pitcher Savannah Clausen.

“When we can jump on a team and just let her (Otis) do her think we are really tough to beat,” Santaniello said. “It was really nice to get run support early on.”

Otis wasn’t able to get a 1-2-3 inning in the circle during her five innings pitching. She walked three, but gave up only two singles. Clausen singled and eventually scored the Wildcats’ lone run.

“We are taking it one pitch, one inning at a time,” Otis said. “We are just trying to get our jobs done.”

The next job ahead for Columbine is Ralston Valley at 4:30 pm Thursday back at Dave Sanders Memorial Field. The Mustangs (6-13, 3-2) dropped behind Columbine and A-West in the conference standings with a loss to Lakewood (17-4, 4-2) on Tuesday.

“We are taking ever game as a championship game right now,” Columbine coach Jim Santaniello said. “Our intensity is off the charts right now. It’s really paying off for us.”

A-West begins a 4-game home stretch to close out conference play. The Wildcats start by hosing Dakota Ridge at 4:30 pm Thursday.

  • Wheat Ridge football wins 2OT thriller against Arvada West

LAKEWOOD — Rocco Tate could run for City of Wheat Ridge mayor and probably win in the upcoming November elections.

The Wheat Ridge junior running back/linebacker scored four touchdowns through the fourth quarter and two overtime periods late Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. The Farmers rallied from a 14-0 deficit against Arvada West to take an improbable 28-27 victory in double-overtime.

Wheat Ridge senior Max Christensen (9) runs downfield during the first half Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“I told the kids before the game that every year there is a defining moment,” Wheat Ridge coach Stacy Coryell said. “I told them, ‘Let’s make this one the defining moment.’ I’m so proud of them.”

Tate had touchdown runs of 5 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter that erased the Wildcats’ 14-0 lead. The junior ran in a 2-point conversion on the second touchdown to make up for a missed PAT.

“It was a great team win,” Tate said. “We finished hard. It all started with our hogs up front to make those touchdowns.”

Both of Tate’s overtime touchdowns came on fourth down from the 1-yard line. Junior kicker Matthias Endland made both of the PATs. The second extra-point kick by Endland sealed the victory and sent the Farmers’ sideline into a frenzy.

Coryell said the Farmers focused on running behind the left side of Wheat Ridge offensive line with senior Soren Howard and junior Chris Smith inside the 10-yard line.

Arvada West junior Evan Hurlburt gets a pass away before Wheat Ridge’s Soren Howard (50) or Jack Micheal (44) can get to the Wildcat quarterback. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

A-West (0-4 record) had a pair of touchdown passes from junior Evan Nuhfer in the overtime period, but a missed extra point after the Wildcats’ second touchdown came back to bite A-West.

“I always have faith in my team,” Tate said. “I know our defense will come out and shine.”

A-West was in control for three quarters. A promising drive by Wheat Ridge came to a sudden halt with an interception by junior Brady Laugen. The Wildcats took over on their own 22-yard line.

Hurlburt went to work for A-West. He connected with senior Nick Nuher on passes of 7, 11 and 15 yards. The big pass plays as the clock whined down were plays to Sebastian Lindeblad. The senior receiver had a 35-yard catch to get the Wildcats down to the Farmers’ 25-yard line.

Hurlburt hit Lindeblad for a 10-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left before halftime to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

Arvada West senior Oliver Petelo (30) finds some running room against Wheat Ridge. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

A-West struggled on offense in the second half and a bad snap on a punt with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter set Wheat Ridge up on A-West’s 41-yard line.

Coryell compared the victory over A-West to the Farmers winning a conference title back in 2015 with a big win over Denver South.

Wheat Ridge (2-1) has two more non-league games against Centaurus and Liberty before starting 4A Jeffco League play against Chatfield on Oct. 10 at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.

A-West has one final non-league game before heading into the tough 5A Metro West League play. The Wildcats are at the North Area Athletic Complex next Friday night where they face-off against No. 7 Eaglecrest.

It will be the first of four 5A ranked teams A-West will square off against over the next six weeks before the end of the regular season.
