  • Doherty football coach Jeff Krumlauf steps down

    Doherty football
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

The only thing Jeff Krumlauf cares about more than his football team is his family. That’s why he agonized for a month before he made one of the toughest decisions of his life.

Last week, Krumlauf resigned as the football coach at Doherty. He’s heading back to the mountains. His wife Stephanie was given an opportunity to help run a family restaurant in Vail, an opportunity that she couldn’t resist.

Krumlauf wasn’t going to stand in the way. He’s going with her and letting go of a head coaching job that he has come to love since he took the program over in 2014. He’s known for years that there was a limited number of circumstances that would force him to willingly relinquish the position.

“Probably just the one thing that did; my family and doing what’s best for my wife and son, for my in-laws and my dad that are up in the valley,” Krumlauf said. “It’s exciting and it’s bittersweet, but it’s time to open that next chapter.”

Krumlauf’s decision represents the other side of a dynamic that is often seen with sports families. Rather than asking his wife to sacrifice for him, he’s willing to make a big sacrifice to allow her to pursue her dream.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

It’s what he often preaches to his players at Doherty. Things in life will come and go, but a family is something worth sacrificing for. Krumlauf felt that if he was going to preach it to the players, he had to practice that mentality as well, even if it meant leaving something he loved behind.

“Honestly, it’s unbelievable to me,” Krumlauf said. “She took an absolute risk in more ways than one in moving down here with me before we were married. I don’t see it as a sacrifice. I see it as an amazing opportunity for her and her family. It’s all about supporting on both sides. As long as I’m around her, my son and maybe some future (kids), as long as I’m around them and coaching somewhere, I can live anywhere.”

He doesn’t think his football days are over. Far from it. Krumlauf has coaching experience at Battle Mountain High School and hopes that he can rejoin the program in some capacity.

In his five years at Doherty, Krumlauf finished with a 33-17 record. He made three appearances in the Class 5A playoffs and won a league championship in 2014. If asked two years ago, he believed that he was going to spend his life with the Spartans. He created a culture that the kids loved to be a part of. That included kicking off the football seasons with midnight practices on the first day of the fall season.

Looking back at his time there, there are so many things about the football program and the school that he’s going to miss.

“All of it,” he said. “The ups and downs, the kids first and foremost. They are an amazing group of young men. The coaching staff, my colleagues, the administration. It’s endless. It’s that secondary family and really not even secondary. It’s 1.1. It was one of the tougher decisions I’ve ever made but we know it’s the right one terms of what’s important and what we preach and that’s family.”

Krumlauf will remain at Doherty through the remainder of the year. He serves as an assistant track coach and will head into the spring season with high expectations for his athletes.

Then he’ll pack up and head into the mountains. Football is far from out his life and he is anxious to continue playing a role in the develop of high school kids.

Krumlauf’s departure has been updated to the list of coaching changes heading into the 2019 season.

  • No. 10 Doherty hockey beats No. 9 Pine Creek to cap undefeated regular season

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — Down a goal early and with Alexander Brooks – the state’s points leader – on the other bench, Doherty hockey coach Will English wasn’t the slightest bit worried.

He had brought his team too far to let panic and concern creep into his head. He knew that his boys would bounce back simply by playing the way they had all year. Early in the second period, those boys rewarded his faith.

The No. 10 Spartans scored two goals in the first four minutes of the period and eventually came away with a 4-1 win over No. 9 Pine Creek.

“Normally yes (I’d be worried about being down early),” English said. “Tonight, no. I wasn’t concerned. Leading into the game my coaches were giving me a hard time. Once we got on the bench on got going it just went away.”

A year ago, Doherty hockey didn’t record a win all season. English had previously coached at Doherty and was successful, so he was brought back to change the culture and get the team back to winning.

And he has done just that.

It was a night of celebration for the Spartans (17-0-2 overall). After celebrating the final game for this season’s seniors, they celebrated arguably one of the best turnarounds for any high school athletics team this season.

“It’s completely different,” Jordan Cornelison said. “It’s a completely different culture and Coach has helped out with that a lot.”

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Mitchell Cole put the Eagles (15-2-1) up 1-0 near the end of the first period. Pine Creek took advantage of a Thomas Hollon tripping penalty and scored on the power play.

Cornelison scored the tying goal in the opening two minutes of the second period and Tanner Chapman scored on a Doherty power play shortly after to give the Spartans their first lead of the game.

“We stuck to our guns and played true to our identity,” Cornelison said. “We just played hard. We weren’t worried and we knew what we were capable of.”

The intensity picked up just a couple minutes later. A lot of post-whistle activity led to some tempers flaring and players from both teams heading toward the penalty box. By the time things got sorted out, the Spartans were going to have a man advantage for three minutes. But they couldn’t capitalize.

“Unfortunately in those situations it can make or break a team,” English said. “We stayed strong with it and we got sucked in a little bit when we shouldn’t have.”

Cornelison padded the Doherty lead four minutes and 46 seconds into the third period. In the final 17 minutes, Pine Creek had two power play opportunities but the Spartans were able to limit opportunities and kill off both penalties.

“For us, we’ve been penalized frequently,” English said. “That is a huge momentum boost for us because we can get through those adverse states and that’s what we talk to with the guys. Don’t let adversity be an issue. Let’s handle those things and keep everything in our favor.”

Nicolas Hernandez left no doubt for Doherty with about two minutes left in the game. His goal pushed the lead to 4-1 and secured an undefeated year for the Spartans. Now they’ll see how the final games play out across the state before the state tournament bracket is announced on Sunday.

  • Alijah Bates becomes first Doherty football player in 13 years to head to a Power 5 team

    Dpherty football Alijah Bates
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

COLORADO SPRINGS — It was over the summer when Arizona State offensive line coach Dave Christensen called Alijah Bates and delivered news that every high school football player hopes to hear.

The Sun Devils had a spot for the senior offensive lineman. The moment seemed surreal. Even on Wednesday when Bates signed his National Letter of Intent, officially joining the ASU program, it still seemed too good to be true.

“It’s crazy,” was all he could say about it.

Bates is a reserved kid. He’s polite and almost comes off as shy. At least when he’s not on the football field. Once he suits up, he’s a force to reckoned with. As Bates posed for pictures with family and friends on Wednesday, Spartans coach Jeff Krumlauf stood at the back of the auditorium at Doherty and reflected on what he had meant to the team and to the school.

“He’s the ultimate protector,” Krumlauf said. “Especially on the offensive side, that’s what he does. He protects what is valuable to him. He’s the same way in his own life with his friends and his family. It’s special to see what this kid has done from the time he was in eighth grade to where he is now and where he is going.”

He’s going the same place his parents went. His dad is Solomon Bates, a former linebacker for the Sun Devils who was named a third-team All-American in 2002.

That’s part of the reason that Alijah’s recruitment to Tempe, and especially the offer, was overwhelming.

Planning way ahead, Bates pulled down the Arizona State jersey from the wall of his bedroom. It was torn in places and just below the right shoulder a Pacific Life Holiday Bowl patch had been sewn on.

    Dpherty football Alijah Bates
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

The jersey belonged to Solomon. After Alijah signed his letter, he took off the Arizona State pullover he was wearing and stood on the stage in his father’s jersey. The crowd ate up the moment and Alijah had a smile on his face.

This wasn’t just a big moment for him and his family, it was a big moment for Doherty. It was 13 years ago that Lamarr Houston had signed to the University of Texas. That was the last time a Spartan had signed with a team from one of the Power 5 football conferences.

Houston would eventually achieve the dream of breaking into the NFL. The roadmap was something that appealed to Bates he prepared to venture into the world of college football.

“I would like to get to where he was and make it to the NFL,” Bates said.

Aside from the high school team, the common link between Bates and Houston is the kind of football they play. It was tough for their stats to be pulled up on MaxPreps. They weren’t the ones throwing or catching touchdowns. Houston was the guy going after the guy throwing touchdowns. Bates is the guy who protects him.

Houston and Bates are both hitters and bruisers on the football field and, lately, that seems to be the kind of next-level players the Spartans produce.

“These are the type of kids that go here and play here,” Bates said. “They’re ready to fight and play hard.”

They have to set themselves apart based on what coaches and scouts see from them on the field. It takes more than a stat sheet.

When Krumlauf looks at Bates, he sees several things that set him apart from other players in city and state.

“He’s six-foot-eight,” Krumlauf said. “So he’s tall and that does separate him. It’s just the way he goes about everything in his life on and off the field. He’s very easy going, he’s always having a good time, he does things the right way, he’s never been a problem. He’s great in the classroom and it’s awesome to see when you have all that in front of you and you have all these other distractions, you can stay focused.”

Bates’ focus helped him land at Arizona State. He’s adding to a legacy on multiple fronts. He’ll step on the same campus as his dad and he is the latest Doherty Spartan to head to a big-time football program.

  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
