  • Football roundup: Valor Christian beats Mullen for the first time

    (Paige Stingley/Valor Christian Athletics)

Luke McCaffrey rushed for two touchdowns as Valor Christian got its first-ever win over Mullen on Friday night.

The Eagles, top-ranked in and two-time defending champions of Class 5A, beat the No. 4 Mustangs 31-7.

With senior Blake Stenstrom out due to a concussion, it was the first career start at quarterback for McCaffrey.

“Any player that comes into the game just wants to do everything that they can,” McCaffrey told Altitude TV after the game. “I don’t really focus on the snaps, just making the snaps count. I really just went out there and tried to do everything I could.”

Valor Christian was 0-2 against Mullen in the short history of their rivalry, having lost to the Mustangs last season and in 2012.

“It was incredible, just to do something that nobody at Valor has done before,” McCaffrey told Altitude. “That was one of our themes all week, just focusing on that: do what’s never been done, and do everything you can for your brothers.

“I thought each and every player contributed. … It was special to see.”

The Eagles’ Joshia Davis had a key touchdown late in the first half when he scored off an option pitch with three seconds remaining. Davis had set the Eagles up at the 2-yard-line with a long run just before the half.

Valor Christian travels to play at Greater Atlanta Christian next week, while Mullen continues a tough early slate of its own by playing No. 5 Regis Jesuit. The Mustangs lost to No. 2 Pomona in Zero Week.

    (@HF_Athletics/Twitter)

Holy Family went on the road and put on a show.

Palisade actually had rallied from an early 14-0 hole to tie the game at 14-14, but then Holy Family connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Stone Samaras to Kyle Helbig on 4th down and 1.

It was quickly 35-14 at halftime, and then Samaras found Helbig again on the third play of the second half to make it 42-14.

Samaras finished with four touchdown passes and a rushing score. Helbig had three receiving touchdowns.

    2A: (7) Sterling 42, (8) D’Evelyn 28

Sterling moved to 2-0 with yet another big top-10 win on Friday night.

The Tigers beat No. 6 Resurrection Christian in Zero Week.

“We’ve had a pretty good run these two games of being able to put together enough to win a football game,” coach Rob Busmente told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game.

Boulder won on the final play of the game after an 80-yard kickoff return set up a 1-yard touchdown.

On Friday, the Panthers jumped out to a 16-0 lead, and also led 18-6 at halftime. Denver South battled back and eventually took the lead, but last-second heroics from Patrick Fletcher on his return set up the winning touchdown by Shane Provost.

Provost’s score came on a shovel pass, according to BoCoPreps.com.

It was a great note to start the 2017 season for the Panthers. Last season, Denver South beat Boulder 56-17 to open the season. Boulder went on to finish 1-9.

“There was 12 seconds left and I wanted to score and I wanted to get that ‘W’ because I knew it would change the program and change the environment,” Fletcher told BoCoPreps.com of his kick return.

Chase for the state wins record

Both Kent Denver and West Grand won on Friday night, which means that Kent coach Scott Yates will retain sole possession of the state wins record.

Kent, ranked No. 1 in 2A, beat Eagle Valley 41-0. That is win No. 317 for Yates.

West Grand, No. 6 in 8-man, beat Sanford 40-0. That is win No. 316 for coach Chris Brown.

    Notables

    • In 8-man, Justice beat Nederland 44-13. It was the first on-field game for new Nederland coach Beth Buglione, who is the first female coach in state history. Nederland only had nine players available on Friday, according to the school. Here’s BoCoPreps’ story on the game.
    • In a rematch of the 6-man title game, No. 3 Cheyenne Wells beat No. 1 Flagler 70-20. It’s complicated, but many of Flagler’s players played at Hi-Plains last season when Flagler dropped its program. This season, Hi-Plains dropped its program, and now many of those players are playing for Flagler.
    • In a big 5A game, No. 5 Regis Jesuit fought off No. 3 Cherry Creek, 25-20. The Raiders led 12-0 after the first quarter, but the Bruins slowly chipped away. They cut it as close to 19-14 in the fourth quarter but Kiahn Martinez had a TD that sealed the game with a minute to play for Regis.
    • 2A No. 3 La Junta beat Gunnison 42-0, and 1A No. 1 Strasburg beat No. 8 Burlington 24-6. That extended each team’s winning streak to 14 games, which is the most in the state.
    • Caliche snapped a 15-game losing streak with a 50-28 win over Kiowa.
    • In the Pigskin Classic, Pueblo West beat Pueblo County 28-7.
    • Another local rivalry: Fort Collins beat Fossil Ridge 17-6. Fort Collins finished minus-5 in turnover margin but still won. “Our defense stuck their neck out there, and they played hard the whole night,” coach Eric Rice told the Scoreboard Show.
    • In 1A, Monte Vista upset No. 9 Cedaredge 31-8. “We just kind of wore them out in the second half,” coach Manny Wasinger told the Scoreboard Show.
    • In 2A, No. 9 Faith Christian edged No. 6 Resurrection Christian 9-0.
    • 4A No. 5 Windsor beat Vista Ridge 14-3 in the return of coach Chris Jones. Jones took a year off of coaching before returning to the sidelines this fall.
    • 6-man: No. 6 Stratton/Liberty ran away from No. 7 Genoa-Hugo 51-14. “It was a weird 6-man game,” coach Toby Kechter told the Scoreboard Show. “Usually, it’s a two-or-three touchdown game and you’re nervous as heck, but our defense was so good that it just felt really good and our kids were really confident in what we were doing.”
    • 8-man: No. 3 Hoehne edged No. 4 Sargent 30-27. “Things went our way in the end,” coach Gabe Dasko told the Scoreboard Show. “I just kept telling our kids: ‘You guys have got to learn to finish in the end.’ Our two big leaders, Jacob Yates and Trystan Moltrer, stepped up and made some big plays for us.”
    • Grand Junction beat local rival Grand Junction Central 21-0.
    • Buena Vista and Alamosa didn’t kick their game off until 9:32 p.m. due to a shortage of officials. They ended at 11:45 p.m., a 37-7 Alamosa win.

  • Boys golf roundup: Aspen’s Dawson Holmes sets the tone at Delta Invitational

Dawson Holmes birdied the final three holes of his front nine on Friday, setting a winning tone for Aspen on the day.

He finished the day shooting a four-under-par 68 to claim the individual win at the Delta Invitational.

The Skiers shot a total of five-over to also wrap up the team win.

But it was Holmes who set the pace. He birdied his first two holes, before giving a stroke back on No. 4. He went three-under over his last three holes on the front nine to take a firm grasp of the lead.

Twice on the back nine he gave two strokes back, but would end his day with an eagle on the 18th, to move him back to four-under. That eagle putt, separated him from Eagle Valley’s Barrett Jones and Fruita Monument’s Blake Anderson to get the win.

Montrose’s Jordan Jennings and Delta’s KC Carlson also ended their days under par, as each shot 71.

Pueblo West edges Fowler to take Grizzly Ivitational

Derrick Sharp’s 76 was good enough to sit atop the individual leaderboard, but Fowler was unable to sweep its own tournament as Pueblo West came away with the overall win by six strokes.

AJ Arguello’s 83 and Ryan Timme’s 85 were good enough to pace the Cyclones, allowing them to grab the team win.

Monte Vista’s Luke Hoffstaetter tied Timme with a 85, but won officially placed higher on the leaderboard.

  • Boys golf preview: Experience at U.S. Junior Amateur is fueling Eaglecrest’s Davis Bryant

With one more chance to go for a state title, Eaglecrest’s Davis Bryant is doing everything possible to make a run for the top spot in Class 5A.

Last September, he finished the state tournament at three-under-par, placing second to Highland Ranch’s Kyle Pearson.

So Bryant did the most natural thing he could do as a golfer. He sought tough competition and he continued to work on his game. That work took him to the 2017 U.S Junior Amateur which was held at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan.

He played well enough in the first two days to make the 64-player cut, which was then broken down into a match play bracket.

“I played it two years ago and it was the same thing, it was an awesome experience,” Bryant said. “I played a lot better (this time) which made it more enjoyable. It was really cool, a great golf course and obviously great competition.”

Bryant trailed Korean Won Jun Lee by one hole going into 18, but he refused to go quietly. The Colorado State commit sank a birdie on the hole to extend the match into sudden death.

It took three additional holes, but it was Lee who finally broke the tie and was able to advance to the round of 32.

The one-on-one atmosphere is something that Bryant admittedly doesn’t get to experience very often. Few of the junior tournaments that he plays in have a match play format.

However, he did find it to be beneficial. In high school tournaments, there is no match play and everything is done through strokes.

“I feel like no matter if you’re playing stroke play or match play, it’s going to be similar (in that atmosphere),” Bryant said. “In the end, you’re just playing golf and trying to get the ball in the least amount of shots. It’s just in stroke play, you’re playing against the course and with match play, you’re playing against another person.”

Bryant and Pearson entered the final day of last year’s state tournament locked in a tie for second place.

But Pearson was nearly unstoppable on the last day. He ended with a 67, including a hole-in-one on the par 3 15th to claim the title.

“Kyle played really well that day,” Bryant said. “I just couldn’t get a putt to go in the hole.”

But he’ll have another shot in October when the 5A state tournament rolls in CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora. It just so happens to be a course that is 15 minutes from Bryant’s house and one that he’s played often.

When my coach (Stan Adams) texted me and told me that state was going to be at CommonGround, I was really excited,” Bryant said. “I’ve played there numerous times. I like the course and I like the layout of it. It’s a good fit for a state tournament and a good fit for my game.”

While Bryant takes aim at the individual championship, the three team champions are all returning at least two all-state players and have their eyes on repeating.

But as with any sport, a championship has to be earned and in order to claim one, the kids have to keep working.

Part of that is making sure they’re playing the right level of competition in order to get better each day as the season progresses.

Bob Austin and Oliver Jack. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

“I want us to play the very best teams that we can and I work hard on our schedule every year,” Kent Denver coach Bob Austin said. “We are going to a national tournament in Chandler, Arizona which I am really looking forward to.

The Sun Devils claimed the 3A title last year and defending 5A champion Regis Jesuit will join them in Arizona.

Defending 4A champion Discovery Canyon brings back Luke Trujillo, who claimed the 4A individual title, and Caleb Blackburn. The Thunder’s win back in September was the first team state championship in school history and they’re looking to grab another.

But the common theme amongst all golf teams across the state is general excitement for the start of the season. While teams and individuals will certainly take aim ending the season at the top of the leaderboards, the coaches are also insistent that the kids just take the time to enjoy getting out on the course and playing a game that they can continue to play for the majority of their lives.

“I want these kids to have lifetime great experiences whether they win or lose,” Austin said.

The 2017 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); strength of a weight classification’s bracket; and multiple championships.

  • Valley wrestling wins 4th-straight 3A title; DeLaCerda, Sandoval 3-time champs

DENVER — Valley wrestling won its fourth-straight Class 3A state championship Saturday night. The Vikings previously won in 2014, 2015, 2016 and now 2017.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season was getting that four-peat,” senior Aaron Trujillo said. “It’s one of the biggest things in making history in our town, school, team, and all of Colorado. We’ve been working hard all year long and we got that four-peat.”

Heading into the championship matches, just 3.5 points separated first and third place, with Valley leading Alamosa and Jefferson. That margin was even slimmer with five matches left as Joshua Flanagan entered the ring for his match in the 170 bracket.

“I knew how close it was, it never escaped my mind,” said first-year Valley coach Ryan Linsacum. “We knew Alamosa was going to be a tough pill to swallow. From the beginning of the season, we knew they were top dog. Jefferson, I was not prepared for. Those guys put together a heck of a tournament.”

Trujillo said Linsacum told the team throughout the year to “keep working hard in the wrestling room, it’ll pay off here.”

It paid off. Flanagan won 5-4 over and unofficially celebrated the team championship with Linsacum, putting Valley up 102.5 to 98 ahead of Alamosa.

“Everybody had the same focus from day one of the season; and that was a four-peat,” Linsacum said. “I put all the credit in my kids hands. They knew what was at stake, they knew what needed to be done, and they came here and did it.

Jefferson sat at 95 with no shot to win the title, but a shot at second place in the 220 match with Oscar Lopez facing Grand Valley’s Evan Hoff. Lopez’s 10-5 sudden victory gave the Saints the points they needed to leap Alamosa in the team scores.

The final team scores were: Valley, 102.5; Jefferson, 99; Alamosa, 98.

A big swing match came in the 132 final, pitting Valley’s Brandon Damian and Jefferson’s Kyle Cisneros head to head. Sisneros took the win and gave Jefferson separation.

“We knew that was a very important match,” Linsacum said. “Sometimes things happen for a reason, you know, put a little extra stress on us. Aaron and Josh all year have welcomed that stress. They’ve never faltered from their gameplan, regardless of the situation.

The Vikings fought right back in the 145 bracket as Aaron Trujillo capped his career with back-to-back individual titles.

“Its so big,” Trujillo said. “At the beginning of the season, my ultimate goal was to get that second state title, and I’m more pumped than ever that I got that. I knew I was going to take it at this weight class and I did.”

All that was left was Flanagan to win his match at 170 and Valley was able to hold on to the team championship.

“It did come down to that 170 match,” Linsacum said. “We were 1-1 with that kid on the season. So, that was the make it or break it time. We had a gameplan going in and we accomplished what we needed to accomplish.”

Valley had two individual champions: Flanagan at 170 and Trujillo at 145. Trujillo won the 138-pound final last year and earned his fourth team championship ring Saturday night.

“(Trujillo) was part of a state championship team his entire high school career, not many people can say that,” Linsacum said. “He’s gonna be missed. He’s going to be hard to replace. He’s one of those kids that you dream about as a coach.”

“You can’t coach kids to the style that Aaron Trujillo has. You either have it or you don’t.”

Freshman Jaziah Whaley also took third place in a hard-fought 4-3 tiebreaker win in the 152 division.

“Right now we’re relishing in this and we’re super excited for what we’ve accomplished, but tomorrow it’s back to the drawing board,” Linsacum said. “Let’s get five, let’s get one for the thumb.”

    Isaiah DelLaCerda. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Alamosa’s Isaiah DeLaCerda and Fort Lupton’s Jody Sandoval II became three-time champions. DeLaCerda pinned A.J. Serna in the 113 bracket, while Sandoval II beat Moises Juarez in the 126 bracket.

“I was nervous more for the first and the second more than I was for this one,” DeLaCerda said. “I’ve always said that I don’t know if I deserve to be with names like Sonny and Cody (Yohn) and all those guys.”

Of course, DeLaCerda is referring to former Alamosa three-time champions Sonny and Cody Yohn.

DeLaCerda watched his brother, Elijah DeLaCerda lose a tough match in the 106 bracket to Fort Lupton’s Jacob Duran just before his match. He gave off an aura of controlled anger and let it out on his opponent.

“We were hoping that we could both come away with a title today, so I went out there upset that he didn’t get it,” DeLaCerda said. “I went out there and had to do it for both of us. I was fighting extra hard for that.”

DeLaCerda put himself with exactly those wrestlers he named Saturday.

Sandoval II came away with a 2-0 win. As for what was going on in his head, Sandoval II kept pushing himself to persevere.

“I had to keep working, the match wasn’t over yet,” Sandoval II said. “So, keep on working, keep on pushing.”

The thoughts about a possible three-peat came into his head right before the match, but Sandoval II let it carry him rather than weigh him down.

“After the 113-pounder won it, and they announced it, it got in my head that this is my third,” Sandoval II said.

In the 285 bracket, Delta’s Logan Church made his way through the one and four seeds, but was unable to claim the title over Sheridan’s Ricky Ayala. Ayala was the 220 champion last year, and now adds the 285 title to his accolades.

In 195, Alameda’s Fabian Estrada pinned Ridge View’s Deven Mosman.

Centauri’s Joe Chavez won his 120-pound match by major decision, 17-3. Holy Family’s Kolsen Welham added his own title win by major decision in the 160 bracket.

In the 138 bracket, Noah Hermosillo of Eagle Valley topped former 2A title holder Quinton Montague.

Eaton’s Isaiah Salazar won a close 3-1 match at 152 over Jimmy Laconte, and La Junta’s William Tyler beat Nathan Johns of The Classical Academy 3-2 in 182.
