  • 3A girls soccer championship: Jefferson Academy tops Kent Denver in PKs

    (Brian Miller/CHSAANow.com)

COMMERCE CITY — The foundation for what took place Tuesday night was laid down last May.

Jefferson Academy’s girls soccer team entered the 2017 state tournament as the No. 1 seed, only to see their bid for a trip to the state championship game denied in the semifinals.

So given another opportunity this spring – and as the top seed again, no less – the Jaguars made the most of their second chance. Jefferson Academy had to outlast Metro League rival Kent Denver in a shootout at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, but the team knocked home all four of its chance and came away with the program’s first state title by virtue of a 4-1 advantage in penalty kicks.

“It’s literally the best thing ever,” said Jefferson Academy junior Mira Houck, who converted the deciding shot that set off a massive celebration. “This was everyone’s goal from the beginning of the school year. Even before we started practicing, we were like ‘we are going to win state this year.’

“Coming off a No. 1 seed we knew that was going to be hard. Everyone was going to try and knock us off, and we were still able to do it.”

Jefferson Academy (16-2-1) was playing for the second state title in school history after losing to Colorado Academy in 2015. The Jaguars lost to Kent Denver and Colorado Academy during the regular season, but stormed through the first two rounds of state before holding off Aspen 1-0 in the semifinals to reach Tuesday’s game.

“I think getting through the Final Four was actually a bigger burden off of our shoulders,” Jags coach Denise Sutton said. “We knew that we were playing a fantastic team coming in. We knew it could go either way. It’s just amazing to experience this with this group of girls.”

Kent Denver (16-2-1) was trying to win its second title in three years. The Sun Devils tied the game up with a little more than 20 minutes in regulation Tuesday but couldn’t solve Jaguars goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick in either overtime.

Two of the team’s attempts in the shootout were off-target, allowing Jefferson Academy to close it out.

“We have an extreme amount of respect for Kent Denver. They’re an amazing program,” Sutton said. “(Coach) Krista (Pearman) is just a great person, a great human being.

“They’re a great team. We fought for it, but we lucked out.”

With the score locked at 1-1 after 80 minutes, the two teams engaged in a pair of 15-minute overtimes. Sun Devils sophomore Mika Fisher stopped four shots in the two extra sessions, and Kirkpatrick made a great save after a breakaway from Sun Devils sophomore Annabelle Johnson.

Kara Dobbs, Bridget Lynch and Denae Lamb each converted penalty kicks for Jefferson Academy, setting up Houck to put the game away.

“I’m not going to lie, I was so nervous!” Houck said. “We were all saying on the sidelines ‘we’ve each just got to make this one, this one, this one.’ I wanted to do my part for the team.”

Fisher finished with five saves and Kirkpatrick recorded four for the Jaguars.

“Brooklynn is an amazing goalie. She does a really good job, she keeps her patience,” Sutton said. “She just is a great leader back there. For her age she’s a very confident goalie.”

After a scoreless first half, Jefferson Academy took the lead in the 44th minute on a goal from Rachel Schlagel. Johnson tied it up 15 minutes later, taking a perfect cross from Riley DiGiulio and punching it past Kirkpatrick.

  • 3A girls soccer semifinals: Jefferson Academy, Kent Denver advance to final

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — The Class 3A girls soccer semifinals has not been friendly to Jefferson Academy the last two years.

After reaching the state championship game in 2015, the only one in program history, the Jags lost to Kent Denver in the 2016 semis and Peak to Peak last year.

They finally came away with a win on Saturday to return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Jefferson Academy got a second-half goal from Kristen Capan to get a 1-0 win over Aspen at All-City Stadium in Denver.

“Our girls had a lot of burden on their shoulders,” coach Denise Sutton said. “This is the third time here. We really wanted to win this.”

The first half once again gave the Jags (16-2-1 overallreason for worry though. Aspen came out strong with a constant attack that was good enough to get them wins over The Academy and Lutheran. Freshman Kelley Francis showed off her speed, constantly blitzing past the Jefferson Academy defenders.

But through the first 40 minutes of the game, the Skiers (14-5) had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. When the teams went into halftime, it was the Jags who knew they had to get things corrected in order to avoid a third-straight loss in the semis.

“They did a lot of talking,” Sutton said. “I don’t like 10-minute halftimes. I like three-minute halftimes. (They knew) it’s just another game. It’s going to be okay.”

In the first minute of the second half, they nearly broke the scoreless tie. Aspen keeper Ella Trane deselected a shot, but couldn’t hang on to it, and the Jags swarmed and had a look at the open net. Aspen defender Maddy Bergdahl was in the right place at the right time and deflected the shot away.

In the 64th minute, a similar situation presented itself for the Jags, but this one had different results. A free kick from Bridget Lynch got in front of the net and Capan found it on her foot with the net open in front of her.

“I was scared I was going to kick it over,” she said. “I knew I just had to keep it as low as possible.”

The one goal held up and the Jags will make the second-ever appearance in the 3A title game. They lost 1-0 to Colorado Academy in 2015.

Sofia Palumbo’s corner kick couldn’t have been placed any better. And Emma Billings couldn’t have been standing in a better spot.

Billings headed Palumbo’s kick into the net in the 34th minute of Saturday’s semifinal game, giving Kent Denver a 1-0 win over Colorado Academy and a date with Jefferson Academy on Tuesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The Sun Devils (16-1-1 overall) beat the Jags 1-0 earlier in the year.

But before they look ahead to that, they had to get through league rival Colorado Academy. The game shifted back and forth with possession in the first half, although Annabelle Johnson did her best to get Kent in a position to score early.

But it was Billings who got the Sun Devils on the board from DeGiulio’s corner.

Riley DeGiulio almost made it a 2-0 game a few minutes later, but her shot skidded wide of the Colorado Academy net.

The Mustangs (14-3-1) had their best look to tie the game in the second half. Britt Lochhead had the ball in an open slot on the right side of the net and tried to hit the back-low corner of the goal, but her shot was wide.

Colorado Academy had another good look later in the second half, but Mika Fisher made the biggest save of the game, effectively sealing the win for the Sun Devils.

Kent Denver missed out on a trip to the state title game last year, but was last there two years ago where they beat Colorado Academy 3-1 to win their fifth state soccer title.

The Wolves come in as the top seed after a heartbreaking semifinal loss to eventual state champion Mountain Vista a year ago. They capped off an undefeated season with a 1-0 win over Columbine on Saturday. They also finished unbeaten in Centennial League play and won the league Fintitle outright.

Defending champion Mountain Vista is seeded fifth in the tournament.

Broomfield, Rock Canyon and Fruita Monument are the top seeds for each quadrant of the bracket.

The Wizards amassed a 14-0-1 record in the regular season and swept their way through the Tri-Valley League. That performance was good enough to earn them the top seed in the 4A tournament.

Windsor fell just short of making it to last year’s title game, losing to Evergreen 2-1 in the semifinals.

Defending 4A champion D’Evelyn grabbed the No. 4 seed in the bracket, meaning as long as they are playing, they will host each game leading up to the semifinals on May 19.

Valor Christian and Holy Family are the other top seeds in their respective quadrants.

Perhaps no one had to do what Jefferson Academy did on its way to getting the top seed in the 3A bracket.

The Jags played games against the six teams directly below them in the 3A RPI, going 4-2 along the way.

Defending champion The Academy grabbed the No. 4 spot in the bracket, a better spot than last year when the entered the tournament at No. 6.

Dawson stayed well ahead of defending champion Denver Christian to grab the top spot in the 2A bracket. The Thunder will come into this year’s tournament as the No. 2 seed.

The Mustangs didn’t lose a single game to a 2A team this year and their only two losses came to teams seeded in the top-10 of the 3A bracket.

Fountain Valley (No. 3) and Crested Butte (No. 4) round out the top four teams in the 2A bracket and they, along with Dawson and Denver Christian, will start the tournament off with a bye.
