  • No. 7 Mountain View softball gets upset win against No. 3 Silver Creek

    (Cannon Casey/CHSAANow.com)

LONGMONT — Raleigh Basart led No. 7 Mountain View softball to a 9-4 upset win against No. 3 Silver Creek.

After Kaley Barker led off the inning with a double, Basart knocked one up the middle to score her and break a 4-4 tie.

“I was nervous, I was shaking up there,” Basart said. “Once I heard my teammates cheering me on, I got that hit down and got my nerves out, and I was good to go.”

Then, in the top of the seventh, Basart fully broke the game open with a two-run homerun.

“I think that’s what really got us cheering and going,” Basart said. “I’ve been struggling with my hitting lately, and finally just hearing my coaches help me out and keep my head in. And wanting to score Kaley Barker; we needed to score her there.”

Added Mountain View head coach Randy Felton: “She’s had a rough game or two lately, but she came back here and had some really big hits. One of her nemesis is that changeup, so for her to be able to sit back on that changeup and drive that was a very positive thing for her.”

Silver Creek pitcher, and Hawaii commit, Jetta Nannen allowed just one hit through the first three innings.

Then, Mountain View got a spark.

“It might take us a time through the order to get a good pitcher like that, but we were fortunate enough to start hitting later,” Randy Felton said. “That’s kind of been our M.O. all season so far. I think we’re pretty deep offensively.”

After Nannen walked the first batter, Izzy Griego laid down a bunt and beat it out. Another walk set up Basart with the bases loaded. Basart grounded out, but a run scored on the play.

“I think what got us through is us coming together more,” Basart said. “We just clicked and we all were having confidence up there. We all saw her a couple times, and were like, ‘Yes, we can hit her. We can do it.’ That’s what got us going.”

Jaycee Schroeder singled up the middle for her second hit of the day and Mountain View led 3-0.

A Nicole Rogers single after Schroeder stole second padded the lead to 4-0.

“We strung a few together when we needed it and put them on the ropes a little bit,” Felton said. “That gave us a little bit of breathing room, but we always know there’s not enough.”

Silver Creek wouldn’t go away as Kendra Green responded with a two-run homerun to deep right-center in the bottom half of the fourth.

    Mountain View Silver Creek softball
    (Cannon Casey/CHSAANow.com)

In the fifth, the Raptors threatened again.

“We knew they would always fight back every inning,” Felton said. “We never had that thing in hand when we got a two, three, four run lead.”

A single, error and a bunt single set Nannen up with the bases loaded. And she delivered.

Nannen lined a two-RBI double to right to tie the game.

Peyton Duke saved two more runs from coming in during the fifth with a diving play to end the inning.

Duke’s play set up Basart and Mountain View to take the upset win.

“This will keep our confidence up,” Basart said. “We’ll see Loveland again. And helping us with league. It will help us more with battling and staying up.”

Griego and Barker had doubles off the wall in the top of the seventh to give Mountain View two runs of insurance before Basart went deep, making it 9-4.

“We have nine hitters that can hit at anytime,” Felton said. “It might be the bottom three one game, it might be the top three. Kaley always gets us sparked at catcher. She gets those big hits when we need them.”

Freshman Bailey Carlson was huge on the mound for Mountain View opposing Nannen. Carlson did a great job of limiting damage and hard contact, and getting groundballs.

“Bailey getting to pitch her first real gutty type of interleague, conference kind of deal as a freshman,” Felton said. “That’s her real first big start, and now she knows what this game is all about.”

  • Football roundup: Greeley West knocks off 3A No. 1 Longmont; game called early due to nearby gas leak

    (greeleywestathletics.com)

Greeley West football beat Longmont to move to 2-0 on Thursday night, taking down Class 3A’s top-ranked Trojans.

The game had a weird ending: It was called with 2:39 remaining after the stadium had to be evacuated, according to the Greeley Tribune, because of a gas leak near the stadium.

Afterward, Greeley West posted on its Facebook page that “small leak” had been capped.

“The site is now secure and safe, according to fire authorities,” the school posted. “Sorry for the inconvenience and interruption to tonight’s Greeley West game. The emergency response was quick and safety was secured.”

This marked the first time since 2009 that Greeley West, which plays in 4A, had beat Longmont. The two teams play annually, and Longmont had won seven-straight games between the two teams.

Longmont actually led 14-0 in the first quarter before Greeley West rallied to tie the game at halftime.

The Trojans again took the lead at 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the game’s final 20 points.

Greeley West’s Derek West had two rushing touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score, according to the Greeley Tribune.

The Spartans are now 2-0, while Longmont fell to 1-1.

The Bulldogs, a 3A program, got another rushing score early in the fourth, then took the lead three minutes later on yet another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

  • Football roundup: Aspen, Middle Park combine to score 130 points; Fruita tops Montrose

Well, here’s one way to start a football season.

Aspen and Middle Park combined to score 130 points when the two teams opened the year on Friday night. That total sits just outside the CHSAA record book.

According to the Aspen Times, the Skiers racked up 707 yards of total offense, and quarterback R.J. Peshek accounted for six touchdowns.

    It was a crazy night.

“Words can’t explain it,” Peshek told CHSAANow after the game. “Everyone just played out of their mind. The O-line, it wouldn’t have worked without them. It finally clicked for us.”

The two teams were tied at 20 after the first quarter, and knotted at 34 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter, it was 50-50.

But Middle Park didn’t score again in the Class 2A contest, and Aspen sure did.

“That is probably maxes out the highest score that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Peshek, who is now in his third season as Aspen’s starting quarterback. “We run a tempo-style offense, it’s all about tempo, and it gets to the point where it just wears the defense down, to the point where they’re not ready when we’re snapping the ball.”

    4A: (7) Fruita Monument 36, Montrose 35

    Montrose Fruita Monument football
    (Tom Hoganson)

The Wildcats and coach Todd Casebier avenged this loss from a season ago. Casebier spent 10 seasons as the coach at Montrose.

This game was a back-and-forth affair. It featured six lead changes, and saw Fruita Monument rally from down 27-14 at the half, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

Fruita eventually took a 28-27 lead late in the third quarter, only to see Montrose answer right back and go up 35-28.

With 2:15 to play, the Wildcats’ Braeden Graham, a senior, scored a touchdown, and Treyton Queen converted the two-point attempt.

We love having a sister on our team, and it’s girl power, absolutely.”
    • 5A No. 1 Valor Christian rallied to beat out-of-state foe Faith Lutheran from Nevada 30-21. The turning point was a crazy option pitch from Luke McCaffrey to Joshia Davis which tied the game at 21. The Eagles added a safety shortly thereafter.
