  • Boys cross country: Valor Christian’s Cole Sprout sets yet another standard

COLORADO SPRINGS — In the Colorado High School cross country world, everybody’s gunning for Valor Christian senior Cole Sprout.

    Most of all, Cole Sprout.

Sprout, already a two-time state cross country champion, added a third gold to his trophy case Saturday, busting his own 5A state meet record by three seconds with a mark of 15 minutes, 12 seconds at the state cross country championships at the Norris Penrose Events Center.

With his third state title, Sprout added his name among the Colorado high school cross country all-time greats.

“It’s incredibly humbling,” Sprout said. “There have been an incredible amount of athletes that had come before me, and to be mentioned with those guys, it’s pretty awesome.”

Sprout went nearly coast-to-coast as the leader, getting a quick kick out of the chute and never looking back.

“Mainly, I was going for the win,” Sprout said. “I had that thought in the back of my head to go fast, as well. But I just went steady in that first mile, and then opened up a bit once I got on those hills (at mile two).”

Currently the second-ranked cross country runner in the nation behind Leo Daschbach of Highland, Ariz., Sprout wasn’t gunning for that top spot on perhaps the most grueling course in the nation. Instead, he just looked to outwork his competition and maintain his mantle as the best runner in the state.

“It I could run for that number-one (national ranking) today, that would’ve been pretty fantastic,” Sprout said. “But I wasn’t really looking at a national ranking for myself today.”

Sprout, who actually competed at the 4A level as a sophomore, set a 4A state course standard of 15:42 when he won his first state crown in 2017. Saturday, Sprout’s 2017 4A record was taken by Niwot’s Cruz Culpepper.

The defending 4A state champ, Culpepper bested Sprout’s 4A mark by six seconds in winning his second consecutive state title.

“I felt good today,” Culpepper said. “I’m fit and (beating Sprout’s mark) wasn’t super unexpected, but he’s an amazing runner and I’m hoping I get that chance to get him a couple times during track season this year.”

Culpepper was the standard bearer for the Cougars, which won its first ever team cross country title, as well. The Niwot title was part of a clean 4A sweep in which it claimed both the boys and girls team titles as well as the individual title.

“It’s great,” Culpepper said. “We’ve had very poor team finishes every year of high school, so it’s very cool for us to come through and finally do this.”

In the 5A team race, Dakota Ridge claimed the team title for the second straight year, its fourth team cross country state title in school history. The Eagles claimed that top spot on the strength of three top-ten finishes from Connor Ohlson (2nd), Jacob White (5th) and Ben Morrin (6th).

Class 2A: Another title for another Roberts runner

Lyons boys cross country Isaac Roberts
    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Isaac Roberts finally got himself a place at the grown-up’s table.

The Lyons High School senior grew up in a house full of champions. His brother, Andrew, won a 2A state title at Lyons in 2007, while his other brother, Paul, was a four-time state champ from 2012-15.

Now, Isaac can join the Roberts championship circle, winning the 2A state crown with a mark of 16:19, nearly 10 seconds over second-place finisher Noel Lopez of Rocky Ford.

“(Andrew and Paul) set the bar high and they definitely inspired me,” Isaac said. “It pumped me up to see (Paul) win all four years, and it motivated me to win.”

The Roberts boys were all home-schooled, their parents Mark and Kim serving as their “P.E. teachers,” Isaac said, essentially grooming champions.

“I think with us, we just started running from an early age,” Isaac said, “and it kind of gave us a discipline to where when we get to high school, it’s fun to be competitive.”

Roberts headlined a Lyons team championship performance, as well – its second straight, with three top-ten individual finishes (Simon Stone in 5th place, Jordan Shackleford in 8th place).

Class 3A: Another title for Mason Norman

The Classical Academy’s Mason Norman not only established himself as the top 3A runner for the third consecutive season, but he did so in more than convincing fashion.

In a remarkable show of dominance in a state meet, Norman crossed the finish line at 15:50, nearly 40 seconds faster than second-place finisher Owen Nolan of SkyView Academy.

Norman said he was focused internally rather than externally.

“I definitely wanted to try to make a gap for myself,” Norman said, “so I could focus on running a race at my own pace. I didn’t want to have anybody else’s pace affect what I was doing.”

In the team race, Norman’s Classical Academy fell just short of a state title, Frontier Academy claiming its first team crown since 2013 thanks to its remarkable depth. Despite its top finisher, junior Sylas Chambers, coming in 7th place, its four top-20 finishers helped carry the load.

  • Girls cross country: Basalt’s Sierra Bower completes amazing year with title run

COLORADO SPRINGS — Saturday, as Basalt High School junior Sierra Bower looked into the stands of the Norris Penrose Events Center following her Class 3A state cross country championship, she couldn’t wipe the smile off of her face.

She had plenty to he happy about, even beyond the fact that she was a brand spanking new state champion, the first state cross country champ in Basalt High School history.

She crossed the finish line at an unbelievable pace, besting the 3A state course record by an amazing 20 seconds at nearly 18 minutes flat, even claiming the fastest girls time at Saturday’s state meet regardless of classification.

“I’m just so shocked,” Bower said. “My freshman and sophomore year, I wasn’t even in the top 20, so I just feel thankful to be out here with my team and I’m so excited.”

That’s right, Bower wasn’t even in the top 20 last season.

She finished 24th overall in the 2018 state championships with a mark of 20:12, nearly two minutes off the state title pace.

Then in a remarkable jump, Bower cut more than two minutes from that state mark in one season. In fact, she was two-tenths of a second away from an exclusive club, as her 18:00.1 mark was tantalizingly close to the sub-18-minute club, which had only been accomplished by seven runners in the history of the state meet.

She felt every bit of that yearlong whirlwind throughout the race Saturday, as everybody along the track knew what was happening.

“I obviously knew what the record was and had my sights set on it,” Bower said, “but it definitely was not my main concern coming into the race. I heard people yelling ‘course record’ along the course, and I definitely tried to keep that pace up.”

She set that pace immediately, trying take it coast-to-coast as the leader. She took that approach by knowing her own limitations.

“For my race plan, I was just hoping to go crazy right from the get-go,” Bower said. “I’m not so strong in the kicking department, so I definitely knew that I had to build my lead from the beginning.”

In the team competition, The Classical Academy put together its first back-to-back state crown since rattling off eight straight from 2003-10. The Titans boasted two top-five finishers, Sawyer Wilson (2nd) and Kennedy McDondald (4th).

Class 2A: Lyons’ lions good enough for title

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Katie Fankhouser was gunning for her second straight state championship Saturday.

The Lyons High School senior certainly had a wide smile on her face after the 2A race concluded, but it wasn’t because she ascended to the top of the podium. She looked up at her teammate, sophomore Quin Gregg, at the top of the podium, and it filled her with just as much happiness.

“I could not be prouder of this girl,” Fankhouser said of Gregg. “She was amazing.”

Gregg’s excellence was on display with the way she pushed across the finish line, collapsing as she crossed, cramps and the joy of winning overwhelmed her.

“I was wondering how much I actually had left,” Gregg said. “Then I started cramping, wondering if I could even do this.”

But she did it, as Gregg, freshman Jamieson Legh, and Fankhouser finished first, third, and fifth, respectively to deliver a second straight 2A team title for Lyons.

Fankhouser said it was a great way to go out.

“This one was really important to me because I actually got to run with (Gregg and Legh),” Fankhouser said. “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to all season.”

Class 4A: Niwot gets a clean sweep

Don’t get her wrong, Niwot senior Samrawit Dishon was thrilled to cross the finish line as the 4A state champion Saturday, barely outlasting Eagle Valley’s Samantha Blair by just over three seconds.

But it was the team title – the second straight state crown for Niwot – that thrilled Dishon the most.

“It feels awesome (to win the individual title),” Dishon said, “but I think the best feeling was seeing my teammates when I turned around, seeing all five of them. It was an incredible feeling.”

Niwot placed five on the top 12, Dishon joined by Amelia Philofsky (5th), Madison Shultz (9th), Taylor James (10th) and Joelle McDonald (13th). It was the definite highlight, Dishon said, as Niwot ran as a team the whole way, relying on pack running before Dishon kicked at the end.

“I really like pack running,” Dishon said, “because it’s so fun to listen to everybody’s footsteps and breathing, feeling that emotion next to you. Nobody’s speaking, but everyone is one the same page.”

Class 5A: Stewart finishes dominant campaign with state title

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

For most of the season, Cherry Creek’s Riley Stewart was the clear-cut top girls cross country runner in 5A.

Saturday, Stewart proved it once and for all with an impressive race, getting a mark of 18:12, 12 seconds faster then her closest competition in Cherokee Trail’s Cameron McConnell, to win her first state title and the second ever in Cherry Creek history.

Last season as a freshman, Stewart finished fifth, coming back to best her 2018 state mark by 30 seconds.

“It feels really good because last year, I didn’t have my best race here,” Stewart said. “It’s great to come back and win it. Just an amazing feeling.”

With three top-12 finishes, Arapahoe stepped up to win its first ever cross country state title and just its fourth top-five state finish in school history.

Freshmen Ava Escorcia and Ava Mitchell duked it out down the stretch, Escorcia edging her teammate by just 0.3 seconds to highlight the team state title run.

  • 4A boys tennis: Niwot’s Wilcox shines; Cheyenne Mountain wins first title since 2012

PUEBLO — Cheyenne Mountain boys tennis coach David Adams made sure his team knew it couldn’t leave anything to chance.

He told them all to try to be the one to cross the finish line to capture the program’s first Class 4A state tennis title in seven years.

At No. 1 singles, Joey Geisz wanted to take those words to heart. He came out firing in the first set, beating Niwot’s Neil Wilcox to get the attention of everyone cruising the concrete walkways of the Pueblo City Park tennis courts.

But Wilcox was perceived as the favorite for a reason. He battled back to win the final two sets and got a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win to claim the No. 1 singles championship.

“He came out really strong, really took it to me and I don’t think I was ready for it,” Wilcox said.

Wilcox had to make an adjustment so started getting more aggressive on the returns and make sure that Geisz started feeling more pressured on his first serves. The plan worked as Wilcox looked as dominant as he had been during the tournament’s first two days.

One court over, however, Cheyenne Mountain’s No. 2 singles player Paul Jones took care of business to ensure that the Indians clinched sole possession of the team championship. His 6-1, 6-2 win over Mullen’s George Henry Hanzel was the first match off the court.

With plenty of time to play, Cheyenne Mountain was the boys tennis champion for the first time since 2012. The Indians finished with 85 points. Mullen was second with 57 and Niwot came in third with 43.

“Coach told us the story yesterday about how a few years ago they needed just one point to win state and they didn’t get it,” Jones said. “It was really important to get that one point and I got it and it feels good.”

This is the 17th championship for the school’s boys tennis team and the 98th team championship in school history. With two more wins, Cheyenne Mountain becomes the second school in the state to win 100 team titles. But that’s a conversation for a later day. Saturday was about Adams’ boys and a win he wasn’t sure he’d ever see.

“When the group that won our last title graduated, I knew it would be a long time, if ever, that we’d get another one,” Adams said.

But this group that was able to do it was one that Adams couldn’t be happier to see hoist championship gold.

“You look at Joey and Paul, who are captains, and they couldn’t be more gracious human beings,” Adams said. “They’re just the nicest guys. They don’t have that ego and strut that you sometimes see among the best tennis players on your team.”

The nice guys were the beneficiaries of honesty from another nice guy. Cheyenne’s Oliver Muhl claimed the No. 3 singles title but found himself in a battle with D’Evelyn’s Carter Smith on Friday.

During the tie-breaker in the first set, an official ruled a call in favor of Smith. The sophomore informed the official that the call was a mistake and it was good in favor of Cheyenne Mountain. That call gave Muhl the set and he would go on to win the match.

That act was a major factor in D’Evelyn claiming this year’s Vicky Matarrazo Sportsmanship Award, an award that spectators of all teams applauded as Smith accepted it on behalf of his team.

Like the individual or team championship, that didn’t happen by accident. It’s like Adams told his team, leave nothing to chance.

Nobody at state tennis did. Championships were earned and integrity was maintained.

  • 4A boys tennis: Aspen looking to crown first champion

PUEBLO — Liam Sunkel might be in for a rough weekend if Friday doesn’t go his way. The No. 3 singles player for Aspen is one of two Skiers singles players to advance to the Class 4A boys tennis semifinals.

He wants to take home a medal for sure, but he’s playing for a bit more than just that.

“My girlfriend said she would dump me if I didn’t win this tournament,” Sunkel said.

Seems like a little much, but he said with a laugh and quickly countered that they’re always competitive and that he delivered a similar ultimatum as she went to play in a club soccer tournament this weekend.

“Yeah, I told her if they don’t win their tournament that we’re done so it works on both ends,” he said.

It’s unlikely that the relationship ends this week due to what happens in two separate athletic events. But Sunkel would prefer to not take any chances because there is so much more at stake. Both he and Alex Mosher have hopes of bringing home the first gold medals in the program’s history.

“We’ve had some players place around third in the past but I’m looking at getting past that this year,” he said.

At No. 2 singles, Mosher is looking to do the same thing. But his first-round win, while important for his personal mission of winning, had a far bigger impact than just an advancement to quarterfinals.

He took down Niwot’s Sam Keronen 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the first round. The Cougars took second as a team last year and with qualifiers in all seven positions, they looked like a favorite to win it all this season. But Mosher’s win may have shifted momentum to Cheyenne Mountain.

“I haven’t really processed (the full impact) yet,” Mosher said. “It’s been a pretty chaotic day for me.”

That’s for certain. He dropped his fist set in the second round to Colorado Academy’s Caleb Aguirre before rallying to get a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

Aguirre was responsible for Mosher’s only loss in the regular season so getting retribution in the state tournament was a big confidence.

“I was a little nervous coming into this match since I had already played him,” Mosher said. “I just kept my focus and powered through. I never lost my confidence.”

Keronen still has a chance to put up points for Niwot in the team race since Mosher is playing in the semifinals. If Mosher can advance to the championship, the Cougars team title hopes will remain alive. It’ll just be a tough task with No. 3 and No. 4 doubles missing out on semis as well.

But heading into Saturday it’s Cheyenne Mountain in the lead with 21 points. A win would give the Indians their first boys tennis championship since 2012.

It’s a big goal for coach Dave Adams and his boys, but everyone knows that there is still plenty of work to be done.

“A lot of these boys have been on teams that haven’t had this kind of success,” Adams said. “It’s been nine years, so they know (what’s at stake).”

  • 4A boys tennis: No. 1 singles final set; Cheyenne Mountain clinches share of team title

PUEBLO — One point will end seven agonizing years for Cheyenne Mountain boys tennis. A program that has been traditionally strong in the sport is almost a decade removed from hoisting a championship trophy, but by all accounts, the Indians are firmly in the driver’s seat heading into Saturday’s Class 4A boys tennis finals.

At the conclusion of Friday’s semifinal matches and playbacks, Cheyenne Mountain sat atop the team standings with 69 points. It will play for five individual championships on Saturday and need just one point remain out of reach of Mullen who is in second place with 54 points. The Mustangs have 15 points they can get on Saturday.

Three of those final matches will be head to head with Cheyenne Mountain meaning Mullen needs a sweep and a little help if there is going to be a split title.

That’s something Cheyenne Mountain coach David Adams is hoping to avoid. To do that, he’s spending Friday night letting his boys know that even a point away, there are no givens in these situations.

“One year we were in that kind of position,” Adams said. “We needed one match. We didn’t get it and we lost the state tournament by one point. We’ll talk about that. We’re just going to tell them not to leave it up to anyone else. You be the one who crosses the finish line.”

Among those who will look to do so will be Joey Geisz in No. 1 singles. Geisz beat Dawson senior Riley Burridge 6-2, 6-1 in Friday’s semifinals and will face off with Niwot junior Neil Wilcox.

Wilcox beat Geisz 6-3, 6-3 in last year’s second round.

But the two competitors were on opposite sides of the bracket this year and while an individual championship would be a feather in Geisz’s cap, he knew his semifinal match was important not just for him, but for his team.

“I was nervous going into because that match is worth 11 points,” Geisz said. “Those 11 points mean so much. And now tomorrow is like a dream come true. I get to play in a final at state.”

He’ll have to be on his game if he’s going to take down Wilcox. The Cougars junior cruised to two easy wins on Thursday before getting a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mullen’s Mac Caldwell. The two games he lost in the second set were the first games he dropped in this state tournament.

“I lost my focus and got a little frustrated,” Wilcox said. “I wasn’t playing my best tennis, but he was also playing very well.”

Ben Bicknell joins Wilcox as the only two Niwot positions to be battling for a state title. Cheyenne Mountain and Mullen both go for five championships on Saturday.

And even if things are seemingly locked up for Cheyenne Mountain, Adams wants his boys to finish the tournament the way they started on Thursday.

    Strong.

“We need to take care of business and we’re going to be challenged in every match tomorrow,” Adams said. “If we think it’s a done deal, we’re foolish.”

It’s not a done deal. But one point will make all the difference.

  • Neil Wilcox of Niwot boys tennis hopes to use experience to shine in No. 1 singles

    (Gabriel Christus/Denver Broncos)

The 2018 Class 4A state boys tennis tournament was always going to be a tough draw when it came to the No. 1 singles bracket.

Nick Lorenz of Discovery Canyon was a senior and looking to find that elusive state title. He ended up running into a buzzsaw in Colorado Academy’s Richter Jordaan. But those two were far from the only stars on the court that weekend.

Niwot junior Neil Wilcox looked strong in the first two rounds of the tournament first beating Alameda senior Kenny Orive 6-2, 6-1 and then dispatching Cheyenne Mountain junior Joey Geisz 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

Then he ran into Jordaan, the eventual No. 1 singles champion. Jordaan won the semifinal match 6-1, 6-2 and sent Wilcox to the consolation bracket. Then a sophomore, Wilcox regained his composure and won his next two matches in straight sets to take third place.

Heading into this year, it isn’t the wins that helped him learn last year, but rather his loss to Jordaan. With two more chances to go for gold, it was a reminder that at the state tournament everyone is playing at a high level.

“Last year I went in very confident and felt like I had a chance,” Wilcox said. “I lost because I was overconfident.”

    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Sitting at the fall sports media day hosted by the Denver Broncos, Wilcox looked every bit the humbled and controlled athlete that he needs to be to survive a grueling tennis season. He maintains that staying humble will help him generate the results he wants and that has been clear early this season.

In the Cougars’ season-opening dual against Peak to Peak, Wilcox came away with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory. He followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Thompson Valley.

Niwot is 2-0 as a team to start the year with duals against Centaurus and Dawson on the horizon. A big key for Wilcox is that he’s trying to focus solely on the task in front of him rather than what his solid play can do for him later in the year.

“This year I have to make sure I just go in and play my game and make sure I don’t spend too much time thinking about it,” he said.

With both Lorenz and Jordaan graduated, Wilcox can enter the 2019 state tournament as the most successful returning player. Geisz is back for the Indians and the field will also consist of talented underclassmen such as Steamboat Springs sophomore Andy Schuiling.

The 2019 season is starting off on a high note for Wilcox as he stands 2-0 after joining several of the state’s top athletes at the UC Health Center at Dove Valley in early August.

“This is kind of crazy for me,” he said sitting at the podium. “I’ve never done anything like this before.”

If he plays to to his potential and maintains his focus throughout this season, he’ll be getting similar media attention. And as just a junior, he has plenty of time to get used to it.
