All-state boys basketball teams for the 2019-20 season

The 2019-20 all-state boys basketball teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of coaches.

A specific player of the year vote was held in each class, as was a vote for coach of the year.

Video: Jeffco Preps With Pleuss (April)

Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. This month’s edition features the conclusion of the winter sports season. Jefferson, Pomona and Columbine all brought home individual state titles from the state wrestling championships at Pepsi Center. The Panthers captured yet another Class 5A team title. Three Jeffco basketball team advanced down to the Denver Coliseum in the state basketball tournaments. Columbine boys and Ralston Valley girls both faced the defending state champions in their 5A state quarterfinal games. Green Mountain girls made it all the way to the Final 4 of the 4A state tournament. We also have some words about the delay of the spring sports season.

Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. This month’s edition features the girls swimming state championship at VMAC in Thornton. Evergreen captured another Class 3A team title. Ralston Valley diver Izzy Gregersen won the 5A diving state championship and Chatfield junior Kathryn Shanley swam to two individual titles. Ralston Valley and Columbine locked up in a big Class 5A Jeffco boys basketball game that came down to the wire. Before the postseason started, Wheat Ridge took a non-league victory over Bear Creek on the hardwood. Green Mountain’s girls basketball continued its historic season. The big National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Feb. 5 was celebrated by several Jeffco schools.

5A wrestling: Pomona stakes claim to 4th team title in 5 years

DENVER — Pomona left no doubt when it comes to the Class 5A state wrestling team title.

“I’ll tell you what. It was fun,” Pomona coach Sam Federico said. “Man our kids wrestled really hard.”

The Panthers led from start to finish during the 3-day tournament at Pepsi Center racking up 198.5 points. Rocky Mountain finished second with 110.5 points.

“You can call this a dynasty for sure,” Pomona sophomore Daniel Cardenas said after he pinned Poudre senior Dean Noble in the second period in the 138-pound final. “We have more generations coming too. Pomona isn’t going anywhere.”

Federico had an impressive total of 10 wrestlers take the podium Saturday night. Maybe even more remarkable is the amount of underclassmen that walked away with medals, only heavyweight Christian Buchholz is a senior.

Buchholz was in interesting story. He just moved up from 220 pounds to heavyweight before regionals and placed third at state.

“Our coaching staff doesn’t just consist of the five or six guys you see here. It’s our youth coaches. It’s our parents,” Federico said. “It’s not a team. It’s a program. That is what we’ve build. It’s fun.”

Juniors Gage Bernall (160 pounds) and Franklin Cruz (195), along with Cardenas (138) and freshman Jakob Romero (126) were the four Panthers to make the championship matches.

“I have high expectations for myself and for this whole tournament,” Cardenas said. “Everything went as planned.”

It was a battle of returning state champions between Cruz and Rocky Mountain senior Alec Hargreaves for the 195-pound title. Cruz took a 5-1 victory.

Cardenas also became a two-time state champion with his victory. The Pomona sophomore is halfway to the coveted 4-time state champion club that grew by four members on Saturday night.

“Every time I see one of my buddies does it, it looks so cool,” Cardenas said of halfway to winning four individual state titles. “That’s one of my goals, to be a 4-timer.”

Monarch junior Vince Cornella also took another step toward a historic fourth individual title. Cornella, who has verbally committed to Cornell University back in September, won his third state championship with the win over Romero at 126 pounds.

It prevented Pomona from winning four individual state titles.

“It was a tough one,” Cornella said after his 15-0 technical fall. “He (Romero) is a talented young guy. I’m sure I’ll see him again next year. He made me work for it.”

Cornella underwent shoulder surgery over the summer and was out for six months, but that didn’t slow down the junior who now has a career high school record of 117-9 over three seasons.

“Everything that he does is laser focused,” said Monarch coach Ezra Paddock, who has never coached a 4-time state champion. “He wants to be the best and really works to be that way. Not only at wrestling, but school, being a teammate and being a friend.”

Corenella has a number of plans, including wrestling at the national level and a trip to Russia before getting ready for his senior year. Zeroing in on that fourth state title is on his mind.

“It would mean a lot,” Cornella said. “I’ve been coming to this state tournament since I was a young kid and I’ve got to see my buddies accomplish it — Jacob Greenwood, Andrew Alirez and Cohlton Schultz — I’ve grown up with all those and even some of the guys who are going for it tonight. It would be cool to join them.”

Brighton junior Kenny Salias (113), Grand Junction senior Dawson Collins (120) and Regis junior Antonio Segura (145) grabbed their second state titles with victories Saturday night.

Doherty senior Tyson Beauperthuy (170) and Cherokee Trail junior Sam Hart (220) were able to complete their undefeated seasons capped off with state titles. Beauperthuy finished with a perfect 40-0 record and Hart completed a 38-0 mark.

Columbine captured a pair of individual titles with juniors Jake Forbes (182) and Zach Schraeder (285) combining to go 8-0 as the lone two Rebels to qualifying to state.

Jeffco student-athletes busy on National Letter of Intent Signing Day

JEFFERSON COUNTY — It was a day for celebrations across Jeffco on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Nearly 100 student-athletes from 11 different schools across the school district signed their National Letter of Intent on Wednesday. Feb. 5 marked the start of the Division I and II, along with the football regular signing period.

There is still one more signing period ahead that begins on April 15.

No. 10 Columbine boys basketball hangs on to defeat Pomona

ARVADA — Columbine’s three-headed monster was able to give the Rebels enough of a cushion Saturday night to keep Pomona at bay.

Columbine seniors Luke O’Brien and Justin Lohrenz, along with junior Garrett Rogers combined to score 38 points in the opening half at Pomona High School. O’Brien finished with a game-high 26 points. Lohrenz pitched in 13 points before fouling out and Rogers poured in 21 points.

“Garrett shot the ball really well in the first half and Justin always comes to play,” O’Brien said. “It was nice that those two and I were able to get going in the first half.”

The Rebels — No. 10 in the current CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys basketball poll — held what appeared to be a comfortable 41-20 lead at halftime.

It got a little dicey for Columbine before eventually hanging on for a 73-63 victory. Pomona (8-8, 1-2 in 5A Jeffco) picked it up in the second half and went on a 12-0 run in the third quarter that featured a handful of easy buckets off Rebel turnovers.

“We were really sloppy on offense,” O’Brien said of the third quarter where Pomona outscored Columbine 24-10. “We turned the ball over way too much. We’ve got to fix somethings on offense. Any team can come back on us if we are careless with the ball.”

The Panthers cut Columbine’s lead to 53-50 midway through the fourth quarter to make things interesting.

“They (Pomona) beat us in transition quite a bit in the second half. That is certainly something we have to clean up,” Columbine coach Clay Thielking said. “But I credit Pomona. Their defense intensity picked up and they run the floor well. We knew they would make a run.”

Columbine (13-3, 2-1) eventually were able to put the game away making 12-of-15 free throws in the final four minutes. Pomona’s shot at a comeback victory faded when senior Trevor Baskin fouled out with 3:16 remaining and senior Isaiah Tshimanga had to leave the game after what appeared to be an ankle injury with two minutes left.

“We had a bunch of mental mistakes in the first half and had some starters get into foul trouble,” said Baskin, who finished with 18 points. “Then I started fouling like crazy in the end. We just have to fix the mental mistakes. It’s disappointing, but the third quarter showed how good we can be.”

Senior Cole Stevens had a nice game with 17 points for the Panthers. Tshimanga finished with 10 points.

“I knew we were coming in to play a really good team on their home court on a Saturday night,” Thielking said. “That’s a little bit funky because its out of our normal routine.”

The match-up between two of the best players — O’Brien and Baskin — not only in Jeffco, but the state was compelling. Both are averaging a double-double this season.

“That dude (Baskin) is one of the best in the state,” O’Brien said.

“I was looking forward to it a lot,” Baskin said matching up against O’Brien. “I’ve played against him forever and always liked playing against him.”

Pomona is back on its home court Monday to face rival Arvada West in a non-league game. The Panthers will be looking to avenge an overtime loss against the Wildcats back on Jan. 24 that opened up conference play.

“We weren’t happy with the way we played against (Arvada West),” Baskin said. “We need to come out ready to play on Monday.”

Columbine has a huge 5A Jeffco League game at home against No. 5 Ralston Valley (15-2, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5. The game will play a big part in determining the conference champion.

O’Brien was out with the flu in the 64-45 loss to Valor Christian on Jan. 24. The setback against Valor really forces the Rebels to win-out in league play to have a chance to grab a third straight 5A Jeffco title.

“Ralston Valley is really good,” O’Brien said. “To get back into the mix to win the league title we have to win that game.”
