  • Football rankings: Pueblo West, Skyline among newcomers

The Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings has some fresh faces with the release of this week’s rankings, and it’s happening at the right time.

Pueblo West comes into the poll at No. 9 and Skyline is right behind them at No. 10.

With a 28-0 win over Niwot on Friday, the Falcons remain undefeated on the year and received enough support from the voters to be regarded as a top-10 team.

The Cyclones have won three-straight games after surrendering their first two of the season. Wins against Pueblo South and Dakota Ridge got them votes, but it was the  57-20 win over Coronado on Saturday that pushed them into the poll.

Denver South hung on to the top spot in 4A, taking 16 of 17 first-place votes.

Coming off a bye, Pomona hung on to the No. 1 position in 5A, but Mullen was able to jump one spot to No. 2.

Fairview (No. 6) and Doherty (No. 9) also jumped one spot from a week ago. Despite coming up short against No. 8 Valor Christian last Thursday, Cherry Creek stayed in the rankings at No. 10 meaning no new teams broke into the 5A rankings.

Discovery Canyon made a statement against Vista Ridge Friday night and as a result, hang on to the No. 1 spot in 3A.

After snagging a couple of first-place votes, Lewis-Palmer jumped to No. 3, one spot above where they were a week ago.

Longmont made the big 3A jump of the week, leaping three spots to come in at No. 7.

There were no new teams in the 3A rankings this week.

In 2A, both La Junta (No. 1) and The Classical Academy (No. 2) maintained their spots after a thrilling showdown Friday night that saw the Tigers come away with the late win.

La Junta’s schedule does not get any easier this week as they host Manitou Springs, which jumped to No. 4 after a homecoming win over Lamar.

At No. 10, sterling is the only new team to break into the 2A poll.

Strasburg hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 1A as all 10 teams from last week’s rankings remained in the this week’s poll.

Peyton made the big jump of the week to come in at No. 7, two spots better than they were previously ranked.

In 8-man, Sargent took five of 13 first-place votes to hang on to the top spot.

Merino made a three-spot leap to come in at No. 4.

There were no new teams in the 8-man rankings.

Still undefeated, Fleming holds strong as the No. 1 team in 6-man with Kit Carson hanging tight at No. 2.

Cotopaxi (No. 5) and Peetz (No. 6) each jumped three spots from last week’s rankings.

At No. 10, Genoa-Hugo is the only new team in the 6-man rankings.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Semifinal loss a year ago paying dividends for Sargent football this season

It has been 42 years since Sargent’s football team found itself playing for a state championship.

Last November, the Farmers believed they were on their way to ending that drought. One victory away from reaching the 8-man title tilt, Sargent instead found itself bumped from the postseason by eventual champion Sedgwick County.

The setback stung, but it may have ultimately provided a lesson that needed to be learned.

“I think the biggest thing is for the kids to see how good you’ve got to be to win it all. You always think, even as coaches, that you’re working hard and doing everything you can and you’re as good as you can be,” Farmers coach Trevan Pepper said. “Then you go up against a team like that, and you see there is another level you’ve got to (reach) to be the best.”

It’s something his players have taken to heart through the early going in 2016. Sargent is off to a 4-0 start and is currently ranked first in 8-man headed into Friday night’s homecoming game, the 7-mile Border War with Sangre de Cristo.

Rankings are the least of the Farmers’ concerns. Coming off a huge 22-20 road victory over Norwood – another 8-man semifinalist last fall – Sargent wants to continue making a push toward the postseason and a potential title-game appearance.

The team last reached the title game in 1974, losing to Lyons in the A championship.

“We’re trying to be at the top. We push hard as a team,” Farmers senior Justin Hacsi said. “Sangre de Cristo is going to be pretty tough. They always play their best game against us. We can’t ever take anything away from them.”

Sargent was riding a seven-game winning streak into the 8-man semifinals a year ago, averaging nearly 52 points a game during that stretch. But the long road trip to Julesburg to play Sedgwick County didn’t go as planned. The Cougars jumped all over Sargent early on its way to a 50-8 romp.

    (Hudl screenshot)

One week later, Sedgwick County knocked off Akron 36-6 to win its first crown.

“We got down early and we just gave up,” Hacsi said. “We took that away from last year, and we showed in our Hoehne (a 26-24 victory) and Norwood games, once we get down we’re not going to lay down and quit.”

Norwood scored on its opening drive last week before Sargent responded with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. Hacsi rushed for 119 yards and a score, and Ryan Davis threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns and added 108 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Davis has seven touchdowns through the air this fall and is averaging 95 yards a game on the ground. Hacsi has 520 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, and has hauled in 14 catches for 283 yards and four more scores.

“Ryan is real even just all the time. Since I’ve known him he’s just super even and consistent,” Pepper said. “Justin is more of a home run-hitter. He can get four carries in a row and get 0 yards, and then if he gets a seam he can bust one for 50 to 60 yards. Or he can jump up and catch a pass with one hand and take it to the house.

    “It’s a pretty good combination.”

Sargent moved two former tight ends to the offensive line this fall in Ty Harrison and Justin Johnson, both of whom have helped stabilize things up front. Christian Schaller, who broke his arm last season and missed nearly all of 2015, is averaging 13 tackles a game from his linebacker position. Hacsi has three sacks.

Sangre de Cristo, which started 4-0 before falling to Mancos last weekend, will provide another challenge for the Farmers. A road trip to face that same Mancos squad awaits at the end of the regular season, followed by the playoff opener.

There is still plenty of season left to play before that can take place, but the prospect of what could be resonates in the mind of each player.

“I’m excited about it. We’ve been to the playoffs all three years I’ve been in school,” Hacsi said. “We’re just real excited knowing that’s a possibility, and we’re looking forward to it.”

To the victors go the spoils.

After wins last week, Denver South now sits atop the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings while La Junta takes the top spot in the 2A poll.

Discovery Canyon also jumps to No. 1 in the 3A poll despite previous No. 1 Fort Morgan not losing this week. Strasburg had a similar fortune this week, taking the No. 1 spot in 1A despite Paonia winning this weekend.

The Rebels got a hard-fought win over Heritage on Saturday and with Chatfield’s loss to Columbine earlier in the week, they traded places this week in the rankings.

Pine Creek (No. 4) and Ponderosa (No. 7) each jumped two spots from last week’s poll.

At No. 10, Mesa Ridge is the only new team in the 4A rankings.

In 2A, the Tigers ascend to No. 1 fresh off a win over Kent Denver, who held the top spot a week ago.

After a win over Pueblo Central, The Classical Academy jumps to No. 2 and will host No. 1 La Junta on Friday.

D’Evelyn (No. 5) and Manitou Springs (No. 6) each jumped two spots from a week ago. Florence comes in at No. 10 as the only new team in the 2A rankings.

Pomona hangs on to the top spot in 5A thanks to a comeback win over Valor Christian on Friday night.

Grandview made the biggest jump in the poll, ending up at No. 5 thanks to a big win over Cherry Creek.

Doherty comes in at No. 10 and is the only newcomer to the 5A rankings.

In 3A, the Discovery Canyon and Fort Morgan traded places at the top of the poll with the Thunder coming in as the new No. 1.

Thanks to a huge win over Longmont, Mead arrives to the 3A poll as the only newcomer, taking the No. 9 spot this week.

Despite Paonia receiving eight of 15 first-place votes, it’s Strasburg who lands at No. 1 in 1A. The Eagles fell only one spot to land at No. 2.

Meeker made a two-spot jump this week, landing at No. 5.

Peyton was the only new team to jump into the 1A poll, landing at No. 9.

A 22-20 win over Norwood keeps Sargent in the top spot of the 8-man poll.

The top seven teams overall from last week’s rankings held their position this week.

At No. 9 and 10 respectively, Pikes Peak Christian and Soroco are the two new teams in the 8-man poll.

Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 spot in 6-man with Kit Carson holding firm at No. 2.

North Park jumped three spots to land at No. 7 this week.

There is one newcomer in the 6-man poll with Peetz landing at No. 9.

  • Football roundup: Grandview gets big bounce-back win against Cherry Creek

A week after being upset by Eaglecrest, Grandview had a big bounce-back win against Cherry Creek.

The ninth-ranked Wolves got rushing touchdowns from Hayden Blubaugh and Gunnar Lamphere, then relied on a stout defense to secure the 17-6 win.

“It was a great bounce-back week for our kids, and our defense really stepped up tonight,” Grandview coach John Schultz told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show.

Blubaugh, the Wolves’ star running back, gave his team a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 57-yard run. No. 7 Cherry Creek responded in the second quarter with a rushing score from Trey Windham.

Grandview added a field goal before the half to lead 10-6 at the break. Lamphere, the quarterback, added his TD in the third quarter.

“It was a good grind-it-out victory for our offense,” Schultz said.

The game set an attendance record for Legacy Stadium.

    8-man: (2) Daypsring Christian 51, (6) Hoehne 50 (OT)

In a wild one, Dayspring Christian outlasted Hoehne in overtime.

The two teams traded scores most of the night, but Hoehne did start to pull away by halftime, leading 30-16 at the break.

It remained a two-score game after the third quarter, with Hoehne holding a 38-29 edge, and the Farmers pushed it to 44-29 with 9:17 remaining the fourth.

But the Eagles refused to go away. They scored 16 unanswered points in five minutes to tie the game at 44, and the teams headed to overtime deadlocked there.

In OT, Dayspring Christian was able to secure the win.

    3A: Mead 49, (3) Longmont 35

Mead got perhaps the best win since the program was restarted in 2010, topping city rival Longmont in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

“We just kept plugging. That’s kind of the mantra we’ve been using,” Mead coach Jason Klatt told the Scoreboard Show. “Our kids just didn’t get ratted. We’ve shown a resiliency, and our kids don’t really care if we’re down two touchdowns, or seven points. It doesn’t matter. We just kept on plugging and I’m really proud of our kids tonight.”

The two teams went crazy scoring in the first half, and Longmont held a 32-28 lead at halftime. The Trojans pushed it to 35-28 after three quarters, but didn’t score again.

“I’m so proud of our defensive staff and our defensive kids,” Klatt said. “We really just hung in there tonight, and we started gaining confidence as the game wore on that we could stop them.”

Mead tied it up on Riley Glynn’s third passing touchdown, and four minutes later Evan Hanson returned an interception for a score to give the Mavericks the lead.

Nathan Mackey had three total touchdowns, including two rushing scores and one receiving.

It was Mead’s third-straight win after dropping its season-opener.

    8-man: (1) Sargent 22, (5) Norwood 20

The new No. 1 team Sargent held firm with a big top-5 win.

“It was a total team effort. They jumped out ahead 6-0, and we just kept battling and battling,” coach Trevan Pepper told the Scoreboard Show.

The Farmers led 22-8 early in the third quarter, and then 22-14 as the fourth quarter started, but they were able to hold on.

Sargent made a stop on a two-point attempt in the fourth quarter to win.

    3A/2A: Durango 14, (6) Bayfield 6 (OT)

The two area rivals met for the first time in 80 years, and Durango pulled off the overtime win.

Peyton Woolverton hit Jake Bourdon for a four-yard TD in overtime to give his team the lead, which they followed with a two-point conversion.

“We had it timed out well in practice and it was just like second nature down there because we’d done it already so many times,”Boudron told the Durango Herald after the game.

Durango’s Dawson Marcum then ended the game with an interception on Bayfield’s possession in overtime.

    3A: (7) Silver Creek 20, (10) Roosevelt 10

The Raptors improved to 4-0 with a big top-10 win.

“It’s a huge win,” Silver Creek coach Mike Apodaca told the Scoreboard Show. “We had the opportunity to play Roosevelt eight-to-ten times over the last few years, and we’ve never been able to beat them at their place. For our program in general, that was a big win and a step in the right direction.”

Silver Creek led most of the way, though it was only 7-3 at halftime, and Roosevelt did take a brief 10-7 lead in the third quarter.

“Our defense kept us in it,” Apodaca said.

The ever-shifting Class 5A CHSAANow.com volleyball rankings has another new(ish) No. 1 team.

Rock Canyon regains the top spot after falling off the perch in the Week 1 rankings. The Jaguars came in as the top team in the preseason rankings.

Fossil Ridge and Denver East are also making noise this week, landing at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The Sabercats were able to knock off defending 4A champion Cheyenne Mountain on Friday, giving them the credential to come in right behind Rock Canyon.

The Angels got a huge win over Chatfield last Wednesday, which proved to be a huge factor in their jump.

Coronado is the only new team to break into the 5A rankings, coming in at No. 9.

Lewis-Palmer is still the No. 1 team in 4A, getting every first-place vote in the process.

Montrose (No. 4) and Valor Christian (No. 7) each jumped three spots this week and Niwot and Silver Creek each broke into the rankings at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

Like Lewis-Palmer in 4A, Eaton is still the top team in the 3A rankings by a unanimous vote.

At No. 8, Coal Ridge is the only new team in the 3A poll.

The most turnover of the week came in the 2A poll as a staggering five teams broke into the rankings.

While Paonia holds on to the No. 1 spot, Hoehne (No 5), Ridgway (No. 6), Sargent (No. 7), Wray (No. 9) and West Grand (No. 10) are all newly ranked teams this week.

Fleming hangs on to the No. 1 ranking in 1A, as do the other top five teams from last week.

Kiowa jumped two spots to land at No. 8 while Nucla (No. 6) and McClave (No. 10) are new to the 1A poll.

  • Football rankings: Chatfield takes over top spot in Class 4A

    Chatfield Palmer football
    (Lance Wendt/LanceWendt.com)

If no one was paying attention to Chatfield before, they are now.

Following a 50-39 win over Pine Creek in Week 1 and a 53-7 win over Palmer in Week 2, the Chargers have earned the right to be the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Chatfield is one of two new No. 1 teams this week.

The 4A rankings received a little bit of a shakeup as a Pine Creek win over Windsor lifted the Eagles to No. 3 this week.

The Wizards fell to No. 4 as a result of their Saturday loss.

Ponderosa is the only new team to break into the 4A rankings this week.

Sedgwick County is the other new No. 1 this week, taking the top spot in the 8-man rankings for the second time this year.

Sangre de Cristo comes in at No. 8 and is the only new team to the 8-man poll this week.

Pomona hangs on to the top spot in the 5A rankings thanks a weekend win over Fountain-Fort Carson.

Fairview made the biggest 5A jump of the week to land at No. 7. That’s three spots better from where the Knights were a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 5A rankings this week.

After a thrilling win over Pueblo West, Pueblo East remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings by taking 12 of 13 first-place votes.

The most turnover of the week belongs to the 3A class as it saw three new teams break into the top 10.

Lewis-Palmer lands at No. 7, Silver Creek comes in at No. 9 and Erie rounds out the 3A top 10 at No. 10.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 2A after getting Scott Yates win No. 307 of his career.

The entire top five from last week’s rankings remained intact as everyone except for No. 2 Resurrection Christian (bye) notched wins.

Weld Central is the lone team to break into the 2A top 10, coming in at No. 9.

Buena Vista hangs on to the No. 1 spot in the 1A rankings. No. 2 Paonia and No. 3 Strasburg also held firm in their positions.

Limon jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 this week.

Ellicott (No. 9) and Cedaredge (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A rankings.

A bye week resulted in Fleming hanging on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

Stratton/Liberty (No. 5) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 7) each jumped three spots from their rankings last week.

There were no new teams in the 6-man poll.

  • Football rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

Pomona is the new No. 1 team in 5A football. (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Three new schools are staking their claim as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes of this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Pomona (Class 5A), Kent Denver (2A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all come in as the top teams in the polls after sitting lower in the preseason rankings.

Pomona moves into the top spot after beating Mullen 28-21 in Zero Week. The Panthers lost at Glynn Academy (Ga.) Friday, but that did not affect their standing to Colorado voters.

Mullen jumps one spot to No. 2 after an impressive win over Valor Christian and Grandview lands at No. 3 after a 30-7 win over Chaparral.

After a 0-2 start, defending 5A champion Valor Christian slipped to No. 6.

Windsor remains atop the 4A rankings after a 33-21 win over Vista Ridge to start the season. The Wizards will have a top-10 match-up this week against No. 7 Pine Creek, who lost to No. 3 Chatfield on Friday.

The Chargers are new to the rankings this week along with Pueblo South (No. 6) and Monarch (No. 8).

After an impressive win over Longmont to start its season, defending 3A champion Pueblo East remains at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

Fort Morgan jumps one spot to No. 2 and Discovery Canyon lands at No. 3 this week.

A 1-1 start has Durango as the lone newcomer to the 3A poll. The Demons come in at No. 10.

Along with win No. 306, Kent Denver coach Scott Yates is also the man behind the Sun Devils team that now resides at the top of the 2A rankings.

Resurrection Christian is sitting right behind them at No. 2, jumping a staggering six spots this week. With four first-place votes, La Junta is sitting firmly at No. 3.

Eaton (No. 9) and Moffat County (No. 10) are the two teams who join the rankings for the first time this season.

In 1A, Buena Vista still holds the No. 1 spot, but Paonia continues to nip on the Demons’ heels as they sit at No. 2 and are only two points behind the defending champs.

Strasburg (No. 3) and Meeker (No. 7) are the 1A teams that made the biggest from the preseason rankings, each improving their position by three spots.

At No. 9, Rye is the only newcomer to the 1A poll.

With six of the 10 first-place votes cast this week, Dayspring Christian is the new No. 1 in the 8-man rankings.

Sargent takes over the No. 2 spot and despite starting 2-0, Sedgwick County drops two spots to No. 3.

Fresh behind getting Chris Brown his 307th career win, West Grand breaks into the 8-man polls at No. 8. Haxtun (No. 9) and Holly (No. 10) are also new to the rankings this week.

Kit Carson hangs on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 30-22 win over Pawnee this weekend.

La Veta (No. 3) and Cotopaxi (No. 7) each jumped three spots this week.

Sierra Grande (No. 6) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 6-man poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

  • Football roundup: Windsor holds off Vista Ridge in big 4A game

    Windsor football team
    (Matt Daniels/MattDanPhoto.com)

Defending Class 4A champion Windsor had a challenge to open its season, and the Wizards responded.

Playing for the first time under new coach Skylar Brower, No. 1 Windsor beat sixth-ranked Vista Ridge 33-21 on Friday night.

“Vista Ridge is a great program,” Brower told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show afterward. “They’re big and physical, and they were battling all night. Our guys did a great job in the third quarter.”

The Wizards jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the second quarter, but Vista Ridge stormed back to take a 21-20 lead shortly before the break.

And yet, the Wizards had some magic just before the half. Jake Hammond had a touchdown reception with 4.9 seconds remaining, giving his team a 26-21 advantage.

Vista Ridge wouldn’t score in the second half, while Windsor secured the game with a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“The defense did a great job to keep them out of the end zone in the second half,” Brower said. “The offense scored that last one to wrap it up.”

New Windsor starting quarterback Connor Apodaca threw three touchdowns.

In a marquee early-season matchup, the Raiders knocked off the Bruins.

The two teams were deadlocked at 7 at the half, and Regis broke through in the third quarter on a quarterback draw.

Both defenses stepped up from that point, including Regis Jesuit stopping Cherry Creek on a fourth-down attempt near midfield in the fourth quarter.

Regis scored again with four minutes to go, then recovered the ensuing kickoff.

The Raiders play rival Mullen next week, while Cherry Creek plays at Doherty.

    3A: (9) Holy Family 52, (6) Palisade 48

Last season, Holy Family had all kinds of wild games as their offense set records seemingly every week.

Hey, why not pick up where they left off?

The Tigers, ranked No. 9 in 3A, beat No. 6 Palisade 52-48 on Friday night. Quarterback Stone Samaras, a sophomore, had another big game after throwing four touchdowns a week ago.

“He’s done really well. He’s got a lot of good weapons around him, and the kids have kind of rallied around him and brought him along,” Holy Family coach Mike Gabriel told the Scoreboard Show.

Holy Family moved to 2-0, following a Zero Week win over Mountain View. The Tigers have a bye week next week, and then play at Fort Morgan on Sept. 16.

    4A: Chatfield 50, (2) Pine Creek 39

Chatfield announced its return to Class 4A in a major way.

The Chargers, unranked in the preseason, upset No. 2 Pine Creek 50-39 on Friday night.

The game was back-and-forth in the first half, with Chatfield holding a 28-19 edge at the break. But Chatfield scored early in the third quarter off a blocked punt, and that really underlined the Chargers’ presence in the game.

Chatfield hosts Palmer next week, while Pine Creek has defending 4A champ Windsor on Saturday.

    2A: (6) D’Evelyn 28, (9) Sterling 24

D’Evelyn began its tenure in 2A with a big top-10 win.

“Our kids just came out with a lot of heart,” coach Jeremy Bennett told the Scoreboard Show. “I’ve told everybody: 3A, 2A — it doesn’t matter. There is good football to be played at that level, and it was a good game tonight.”

The Jaguars rallied in the fourth quarter to win. Geoff Farmar had a pick-6 late which gave D’Evelyn the lead for good.
