  • Sedgwick County beats Hoehne to win fourth-straight 8-man football title

JULESBURG — Layne Green’s style of play is symbolic of his entire team.

The heaviest player (230 pounds) on Sedgwick County is a rugged ball-carrier. His legs, resembling tree trunks, churn through big holes and sprint around and through oncoming defenders.

“He’s been the guy we’ve kind of all looked up to,” Cougars quarterback Ethan Walter said. “If we need some yards, we can give it to him and we can trust that he can get the yards we need.”

As a whole group, when the Cougars faced adversity this season, a 30-game win streak snapped by Merino, they continued marching forward and eventually overpowered teams during their playoff run.

Sedgwick County capped the fall with a fourth consecutive state championship in 8-man football, topping Hoehne 58-14 on their home field. The last 8-man program to earn a four-peat was Stratton (1992-1995).

“I remember as a kid playing 8-man football and I had a pretty good coach, maybe one of the best in the game,” said Sedgwick head man Chris Michel, a former Merino player. “He always talked about the Strattons of the 1990s and their great kids and great coaches. For me to know that we’re part of something like this is pretty special.”

Hoehne keyed on stopping the powerful rushing attack of the Cougars (11-1), led by Green, who was named the 8-man player of the year in 2017. The Farmers did well gang-tackling the senior and holding him to under 100 rushing yards, though he still managed to plunge for a 2-yard score.

Green did finish the season with 29 touchdowns, 75 for his career, but the Cougars had to adjust a bit to Hoehne loading the box and daring Sedgwick to pass.

They answered the call, dazzling through the air as the Ethan Walter-Terrance Heath connection produced four touchdowns. Heath had only one receiving score the first 11 games.

“Hoehne knew we had a good running game and they came to stop it,” Walter said. “We would pound the ball and then go over the top. We haven’t had anything quite like that all season.

“They’re going to be lucky to have him (Heath) next year. He’s only going to be a junior. He’s a tremendous athlete.”

On 4th and 9 from the Hoehne 34 yard line, Walter found Heath for a score on the opening possession. Beau Parker ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.

Hoehne’s power run game was effective in stretches though as Kyle Rowe rumbled 40 yards during their first scoring chance, but a two-point conversion failed and it was 8-6 in favor of Sedgwick. Each time the 5th-seeded Farmers gained momentum, the Cougars would snatch it back as Heath caught another touchdown on 4th and 5 from the Hoehne 18 early in the second quarter.

Then, Walter had a nifty touchdown run on an option play and Sedgwick County held a 22-6 lead at halftime.

In trying to unseat a three-time defending champion, Hoehne grasped momentum again as Trysten Moltrer, with over 1,400 rushing yards to his credit, sprinted 65 yards to the end zone.
The Farmers pulled within eight, but never clawed closer.

The deadly connection, Walter to Heath, struck again in the third (27 yard pass) and fourth (68 yards) quarters. The last one was the most spectacular as the 6-foot dynamo broke three tackles on the play.

“For a sophomore to come in to the championship game and play like that, that’s something that hopefully in the future we’ll expand on,” Michel said with a beam. “He always has big play capability, but we rely on the run a lot. Today he made the most of his opportunities.”

The Parker brothers — Beau (junior) and Brody (freshman) — made their mark on the ground. Beau rushed for over 100 yards and Brody, checking in to the game with a few minutes left, flashed his speed with a 61 yard score.

“We have one back who is 230 pounds and one back who thinks he’s 230 pounds (Beau Parker),” Michel said with a laugh. “He runs the ball like he’s a big, powerful back. He punishes kids and he does a great job. He has good vision.”

Angel Nunez scooped and housed a fumble by Hoehne on a kickoff return for the final touchdown.

Before Sedgwick County overpowered the visitors, they needed to avenge the loss to Merino (27-24 on October 26). They triumphed in a road test, 32-0, in the semifinals.

“I hate to say it, but I’m kind of glad we lost,” Walter admitted, knowing how well the team regrouped. “That game, we just didn’t have the momentum. We thought we would just walk through it. After that, we were so fired up.”

Hoehne was appearing in their fifth football championship game. They won the 8-man crown in 2012 and 2010, and the 1A crown in 1980. The Farmers, who finished 11-2 in large part due to a terrific rushing attack, were also the runner-up in 2011.

  • Football roundup: Merino ends Sedgwick County’s 30-game winning streak

Merino put an end to the longest active football winning streak in the state when the Rams upset No. 1 Sedgwick County 27-24 in an 8-man game on Friday night.

The win ended Sedgwick County’s winning streak at 30 games, handing the Cougars their first loss since 2016. It was also Sedgwick County’s first in-state loss since 2014, a span of 39 games.

“To be honest with you, it’s all still kind of a blur, but our defensive performance tonight was excellent,” coach Dan Sutter told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We had a lot of kids step up.”

Sedgwick County (7-1) led the game 14-0, but Merino (5-4) rallied to tie the game at halftime.

“I think our boys were maybe a little juiced at the beginning, and just maybe wanted to make a play that wasn’t there to make early on,” Sutter said. “So we gave up a couple of early quick scores, but then we settled in. … We took our time trying to chisel our way back into it.”

Senior Matthew Frank had a pick-six that Sutter called the turning point for Merino.

“It just changed the complexion of the game,” Sutter said.

Merino also had a goal-line stop on the 1-yard-line late in the game.

“It was great,” Sutter said. “I can’t remember exactly every play on the stand, but I guarantee I’m going to go back and look at it tonight before I can sleep.”

    6-man: (2) Kit Carson 28, (1) Stratton/Liberty 22

Kit Carson rallied with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the important win.

“It was a wild one,” Kit Carson coach Curt Connelley told the Scoreboard Show.

The final touchdown came with three minutes to play, and had to make a fourth-down stop to hold Stratton/Liberty.

“We were up with three minutes, and we had to make a stop there, and we got it done,” Connelley said.

    5A: (5) Grandview 28, (2) Cherry Creek 21 (2 OT)

Grandview rallied from being down 14-0 in the first half to tie the game at 14, with the second touchdown coming with just over three minutes to play.

After trading quick touchdowns in the first OT, Grandview won the game in the second overtime by stopping Cherry Creek on its possession.

“The defense kept us in it,” Grandview coach John Schultz told the Scoreboard Show.

Grandview had four touchdown passes in the win.

Schultz pointed to his team’s experience in close games this season as one reason for the win.

“The kids were down on themselves and upset about their mistakes, but they never lost their cool, and they just kept battling, and the defense stood strong while we got ourselves together,” Schultz said.

    5A: (10) Smoky Hill 35, Westminster 28

Smoky Hill is 10-0 for the first time since 1980, and has secured a spot in the 5A playoffs by winning the Metro 10 League.

In a game that decided the league title, the two teams were tied at 7 early, and then at 14 at halftime. But Smoky Hill grabbed the lead for good with a 56-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and then held off Westminster in the fourth quarter.

  • Football roundup: Hoehne beats Holly in top-10 8-man matchup

Hoehne took a big step toward securing a league championship in the Arkansas Valley with a win over Holly on Friday.

The third-ranked Farmers beat Holly 54-20.

Holly actually led the game 20-8 in the first quarter, meaning Hoehne ripped off 46 unanswered points.

“It was kind of scary at first,” coach Gabe Dasko told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We made some defensive adjustments, and our kids kind of wore them down physically. Our kids are pretty physical.

“I mean, we’d rather play football in a phone booth,” Dasko continued. “They kind of spread you out, and they put you in some tough situations.”

Hoehne is now 5-1, and 4-0 in the Arkansas Valley. Every other team in the league has at least one loss.

“It’s not over yet,” Dasko said. “We’ve still got Wiley and McClave. We’re not good enough right now to take anybody lightly. McClave looks like they’re playing pretty decent right now. And we’ve just got to keep sharpening the edge on the knife for our kids, and getting better every week.”

    3A: (8) Pueblo East 41, Pueblo South 14

Luc Andrada threw four touchdowns as the Eagles won the Cannon Game against their rivals. Three of those went to star wideout Kain Medrano.

Patrick Gonzales also rushed for three scores for Pueblo East.

It was the first week of league play in the newly-realigned South Central League, which features five Pueblo teams together along with Durango.

    2A: (7) Salida 35, Pagosa Springs 7

Salida is now 6-0 after beating Pagosa Springs 35-7.

“I think last year set the table for us,” first-year Spartans coach Matt Luttrell told the Scoreboard Show. “The kids have been well-coached up to this point. Eric Handke did a great job kind of passing the baton on to me. And I’ve been around these kids since they were freshmen, as well. It’s just fun to be a part of. Last year definitely set the tone for us.”
