  • Rock Canyon returns to 5A basketball ranking at No. 8

Rock Canyon has returned to CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A boys basketball rankings. The Jaguars are No. 8 in this week’s poll.

They were last ranked just prior to the break, but fell out last week. Rock Canyon’s return means the Continental has five ranked teams for the fourth straight poll.

Elsewhere in 5A, Regis Jesuit remained a unanimous No. 1 selection with all 16 first-place votes. In fact, teams Nos. 1-4 stayed put, including No. 2 ThunderRidge, No. 3 Dakota Ridge and No. 4 Eaglecrest.

Overland returned to 5A’s top-5, while Chaparral dropped one place to No. 6.

Mountain Vista is No. 7, Denver East is No. 9 and Montbell is No. 10.

The four other No. 1 teams also remained the same: Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

In 4A, Pueblo West (No. 8) and Sierra (No. 9) joined this week. The lone newcomer in 3A this week was Manitou Springs (No. 10), while 2A added Caliche (also No. 10).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Three days after upsetting then-No. 7 Lakewood, Ralston Valley girls basketball finds itself ranked in CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A poll.

The Mustangs beat Lakewood 69-41 on Friday. Monday, they are ranked No. 8.

Also joining — or in their case, returning to — the poll was Grand Junction (No. 9).

ThunderRidge stayed in 5A’s top spot, and is now a unanimous pick with all 17 first-place votes.

Broomfield (No. 2), Highlands Ranch (No. 3), Grandview (No. 4), Monarch (No. 5) and Horizon (No. 6) also remained in their respective rankings.

Denver East bumped up one spot to No. 7, while Lakewood fell three places to No. 10.

Elsewhere, there’s a new No. 1 team in the 2A ranking. Peyton shot up from No. 5 to the top spot this week after taking down former No. 1 Yuma 65-45 on Saturday. The Panthers are 8-0.

Each of the three other No. 1 teams remained the same: Valor Christian (4A), Sterling (3A) and Kit Carson (1A).

  • Legend, Denver East join first boys basketball rankings after the break

    Legend Dakota Ridge boys basketball
Monroe Porter, left, and Legend joined the 5A poll at No. 9 this week. Dakota Ridge, meanwhile, is up to No. 3. (Dennis Pleuss)

Legend and Denver East have joined CHSAANow.com’s boys basketball rankings in Class 5A this week. The Titans are No. 9, and the Angels are No. 10.

Legend, 9-3 this season, has won seven consecutive games. It plays at No. 8 Mountain Vista on Friday.

Denver East, meanwhile, returned to the poll after a short hiatus. At 5-6, the record is somewhat deceiving. Three of the losses came at an out-of-state tournament, and a fourth, to Chaparral, came in a wild double-overtime matchup. They own wins over Legend and No. 2 ThunderRidge.

Regis Jesuit continued its stay atop the 5A poll, and are a unanimous pick with 16 first-place votes. The Raiders are 10-0. ThunderRidge also kept its No. 2 spot.

Behind those two, however, the movement began.

Dakota Ridge (11-0) shot up to No. 3, and Eaglecrest bumped up one place to No. 4. Chaparral rounds out the top five.

As was the case before the break, a total of five teams from the Continental League are ranked. With that league now in the thick of its schedule, it should be a battle every night.

Each of the other No. 1 teams also stayed put. Those are Longmont (4A), Colorado Springs Christian (3A), Sanford (2A) and Sangre de Cristo (1A).

The Knights are No. 8 in CHSAANow.com’s poll. They went 2-1 last week, with the lone loss coming to No. 1 ThunderRidge.

ThunderRidge retained its spot atop 5A, thanks in large part to a second win over Broomfield, which was ranked No. 2 at the time.

Ther other big change this week was in 3A, where Sterling overtook Pagosa Springs for the No. 1 spot in the classification.

The 4A poll added a pair of Western Slope teams this week in Durango (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10)

  • Overland heads preseason 5A boys basketball rankings

    Denver East Overland boys basketball
Austin Conway and Overland are the preseason No. 1 team in 5A boys basketball. (Pam Wagner).

Overland, a final four team a season ago, is the preseason No. 1 pick in Class 5A boys basketball.

The Trailblazers return a talented roster, as well as three of their four leading scorers from 2013-14. Included are senior Division I commits Austin Conway (Wyoming) and Ryan Swan (Air Force), as well as top 2016 national recruit De’Ron Davis.

Overland got 10 first-place votes, and had 151 total points.

Regis Jesuit is No. 2 in CHSAANow.com’s 5A poll, while defending champion Denver East begins at No. 3. Eaglecrest is fourth, and ThunderRidge rounds out the top 5.

Also ranked in the preseason is No. 6 Chaparral, No. 7 Abraham Lincoln, No. 8 Arvada West, No. 9 Rangeview and No. 10 Mountain Vista.

Elsewhere, Sanford is the lone defending champion to open up as a preseason No. 1 team. It heads the 2A poll.

Reflecing the uncertainty of the 4A this year, eight different teams received first-place votes in that classification’s preseason ranking.

Longmont got five of those votes, and leads the 4A poll as preseason No. 1. Pueblo South also got five first-place votes, and is No. 2.

Lewis-Palmer is third, Thomas Jefferson is fourth and Valor Christian rounds out the top five. Defending champion Pueblo East is No. 9 in the preseason. Holy Family, last season’s 3A champion which moved up to 4A this year, is No. 8.

In 3A, Colorado Academy leads the way. The Mustangs, runner-up last season, received seven of the 11 first-place votes.

1A’s preseason poll is led by McClave. Defending champion Hi-Plains is No. 3.
