Jacob Smith needs just 39 pitches in no-hitter for Middle Park baseball

Jacob Smith was incredibly efficient as he threw a no-hitter for Middle Park baseball on Tuesday.

The sophomore needed just 39 pitches to accomplish the feat in his team’s 26-0 win over Bruce Randolph.

“29 strikes and 10 balls,” said Middle Park coach Jon T. Hall. “He was just throwing it right down the pipe, and they weren’t swinging at the first pitch a lot of times. 12 of the 29 were first-pitch strikes.”

Smith faced the minimum of 15 batters over five innings, allowing a lone base runner on a walk. (Smith picked that runner off the very next pitch.) He had seven strikeouts.

“It was a feat beyond feats, man,” Hall said. “It was like he was unconscious up there. It was something else.”

Hall, now in his fourth season at Middle Park, has been a baseball coach for 13 years. He said he’s never had a player do anything like Tuesday’s performance.

“I’ve never even seen anything like this, even in all the years I played college ball, or when I was 3, 4 years old growing up,” Hall said.

The Panthers’ offense held up its end of the bargain, too: Middle Park led 7-0 after the first inning, and also pushed across nine runs in the third. Gabe Loberg, Sam Colley and Turner Bjerken each had three RBIs, with Bjerken going deep.

Smith is now 2-0 this season with a 1.40 ERA in eight appearances. He also has a save.

“The young man’s been throwing well all year,” Hall said.

The Panthers moved to 8-6 with the win, including 7-2 in the Class 3A/2A Frontier League, and have five games left on their schedule — to play in six days.

“Living up here in the mountains, we’ve had snowouts and snowouts and snowouts and snowouts. Every one of them has been snow; it’s not been rain,” Hall said. “It’s definitely a tough place to play home ball games up here in the mountains.”

The good news? Smith will be available to pitch again. Because he only threw 39 pitches, he only needed one day of rest under the pitch count rule — which he’ll get on Wednesday before the Panthers play again Thursday.

“He’s free to pitch whenever I need him again,” Hall said.

Morris shines for Platte Canyon baseball in win over Bruce Randolph

Platte Canyon baseball opened Frontier League play with a 13-3 win over Bruce Randolph on Tuesday.

Wyatt Morris struck out ten batters in 3 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Ryan Dikken pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out six.

“I was proud of the effort we put forth today,” Platte Canyon coach Chris Morris said. “We pitched really well for the most part, stuck to our approach at the plate. We are very aggressive on the basepaths that caused a couple of innings to be cut short, but I love the aggressiveness there.”

Morris also went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs, while Blake Barnes was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Davian Breese and Cole Roosma each had two RBIs for the Huskies. Dikken went 4-for-4, and scored two runs.

Platte Canyon jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning thanks to a single by Barnes, a double by Keifer Grafner and singles by Josh Rummelhart and Morris.

Morris had a double in the third inning that led to one more Husky run.

After five innings, Platte Canyon led 8-2. The Huskies bats got going again in the top of the sixth, scoring five more runs. RBI doubles by Dikken, Morris, Roosma and Breese led the way.

In the second game of the double-header on Tuesday, Platte Canyon (2-1) led Bruce Randolph 9-1 before it was suspended due to darkness.

Boys soccer rankings: Cheyenne Mountain bumps up to No. 1 in 4A

Cheyenne Mountain Lewis-Palmer boys soccer

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Cheyenne Mountain is back on top of the Class 4A CHSAANow.com boys soccer rankings. The Indians had taken the top spot in the Sept. 6 poll, but a loss knocked them out of first on Sept. 19.

But a 2-1 win over Lewis-Palmer last Thursday was enough to put them back in the driver’s seat.

Air Academy only slipped down to No. 2 with the rankings and will have a chance to match the Indians’ move from last week as they’ll face Lewis-Palmer on Thursday.

Greeley Central broke into the 4A rankings at No. 9, the only newcomer this week.

In 5A, Boulder is still the No. 1 team, but has fresh company on its heels as Denver East jumps to No. 2.

Mountain Vista made a two-spot jump to come in at No. 6 this week, while Arapahoe broke in at No. 8, the only new team to the 5A poll.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 3A, but Metro League rival Jefferson Academy made a jump to No. 2, three spots better than a week ago.

The Jaguars’ only loss of the season was to the Sun Devils back on Sept. 15.

Vail Mountain also made a three-spot leap to come in at No. 3.

One new team climbed into the 3A poll as Basalt comes in at No. 9.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday during the regular season.

Complete rankings for each class are below.
