Re-classification of schools

Three schools asked to reclassify according to bylaw 1500.21, which allows schools to move down a class if they meet a number of factors, such as socio-economics, geography, competitive history and enrollment trend.

  • Greeley Central was approved to reclassify. This means their team sports will compete in 4A, and representatives of the school said it was their intention to play up to 4A in sports, such as wrestling, where the reclassification would put them in 3A.
  • Montezuma-Cortez’s reclassification from 4A to 3A was also approved. Likewise, school reps said they would commit to playing up to 3A in any sports where the reclassification would put them in 2A.
  • Skyline’s reclassification from 5A to 4A was approved.

[divider]

Program playdowns

The following schools had their program playdown requests approved. These programs will not be eligible to compete in the postseason, per bylaw 1500.27.

  • Arvada football from 3A to 2A.
  • Boulder softball from 5A to 4A.
  • Calhan football from 1A to 8-man.
  • Cripple-Creek Victor from 8-man to 6-man.
  • Dolores Huerta from 1A to 8-man.
  • Jefferson from 2A to 1A.
  • Loveland boys and girls soccer from 5A to 4A.
  • Mead boys soccer from 4A to 3A.
  • Pinnacle football from 2A to 1A.
  • Rangeview boys lacrosse from 5A to 4A.

New schools approved as members

The committee approved seven new schools for initial probationary membership into CHSAA. They are:

  • Denver School of Science & Tech – Byers, which is in Denver’s Wash Park neighborhood.
  • KIPP Northeast, located in northeast Denver.
  • Loveland Classical School, in Loveland.
  • Riverdale Ridge, in Brighton.
  • Strive Prep Rise, in northeast Denver.
  • Strive Prep Smart, in southwest Denver.
  • Thomas MacLaren, in Colorado Springs.

KIPP Northeast and Strive Prep Rise are housed in the same building and are planning to co-op, so they will play 4A. DSST-Byers, Riverdale Ridge and Strive Prep Smart will likely be 3A. Loveland Classical and Thomas MacLaren will likely be 2A,

Riverdale Ridge will most likely play 2A football, as well.

Another school, Windsor Charter, was not accepted because the CLOC members felt the school was not yet ready to become a member for a variety of reasons.

With these new schools, CHSAA will have 361 member schools in 2018-19.

[divider]

Stargate School granted full membership

One new school has joined CHSAA as a full member, moving off probationary status: Stargate School, which is located in Thornton.

Three others up for review for full membership were left on probationary status:

  • DSST-College View was left on because it has had multiple CHSAA violations dealing with eligibility.
  • Golden View Classical Academy and Victory Prep Academy were both left on probationary status because no one from the school attended the CLOC meeting.

Cripple Creek-Victor, Deer Trail will resume suspended football game on a Monday

Cripple Creek-Victor and Deer Trail had their football game delayed and later suspended by lightning last Saturday.

On Tuesday, the two schools agreed to a date where they’ll finish their 6-man contest: It will resume on Oct. 9, a Monday, at 2 p.m. at Cripple Creek-Victor.

The game originally started late Saturday afternoon, at 3 p.m., and the start of the second half was delayed by lightning for more than an hour. Because the field doesn’t have lights, it was too dark to play in the third quarter, and the game was officially suspended with 9:54 to play in that frame.

Deer Trail is leading Cripple Creek-Victor 31-14. Cripple Creek-Victor has the ball on their 27, with first-and-10.

Cripple Creek-Victor hosts Elbert on the Saturday prior to their resumption of this game. Deer Trail plays at Cheraw on the Friday before.

CHSAA’s quarter rule dictates that a student-athlete cannot participate in more than six quarters in three days, and no more than seven in a week. Under the rule, a week is defined as Thursday to Wednesday. Exceptions to the six-quarter rule can be made for postponed contests.

Broncos high school football coach of the week: Cripple Creek-Victor’s Mark Sampson

At the end of every football game, Cripple Creek-Victor coach Mark Sampson has his players go to the sidelines to thank their parents, family and friends for coming out and watching them play, no matter the outcome.

“It’s a little, ‘Hey mom, hey dad, I gave you everything I got,’ kind of moment with gratitude,” Sampson said.

Coach Sam is in his second year head coaching, although he’s been around Colorado as an assistant since 1999. Cripple Creek-Victor hadn’t won an on-field game since Oct. 30, 2010. But last Friday, Coach Sam and the Pioneers snapped a 35-game losing streak with a 65-31 win over Colorado Deaf & Blind.

Week 2’s Denver Broncos coach of the week is Coach Sam: a man who has persevered through his own struggles and dedicated his coaching career to helping others persevere through their own adversities.

Question: Why do you coach?

Sampson: At the age of 14 I lived on the streets of New York, and I didn’t have a mother or father. I sometimes ate out of dumpsters and slept in a box or broke into the local teen center, and I put myself through high school knowing that to get somewhere in life, I had to have an education.

Had it not been for a coach and shop teacher, I’d probably be in jail or dead.

You have to give back, and I run into these types of kids every day. I coach for the opportunity to work with kids and teach them about sports and life; how to do the right thing and helping them believe in themselves and their abilities.

Q: Why do you coach the way you do?

Sampson: I’ve been around coaches all of my life and most good coaches will learn from others on the right way to be and motivate others. I’ve been blessed to know quite a few great coaches in my lifetime and I emulate them. I do the right things for the kids.

Q: What it’s like to be coached by you?

Sampson: I’ve never thought about it from that end. I believe we must be there for our youth. We are role models. Last week I got an email from a kid I taught four years ago and it thanked me for everything I’d done for him. My assistant coach also used to be my JV quarterback at Harrison, and some of my Woodland Park guys are still some of my best friends. I think that’s what a coach is supposed to do.

Q: How do you define success in coaching?

Sampson: It’s not in the wins and losses column, actually. It’s making people understand once they’ve given 100 percent, they’ve given everything they’ve got, and that’s success. The end result comes in wins and losses, but that doesn’t determine success.

Q: What’s your most meaningful experience with a team or a player?

Sampson: I’ll be brutally honest, I’ve got so many of them. I think when kids call me after 10-15 years telling me what an effect I had on them.

Q: You snapped a 35-game losing streak last week. Can you describe how you felt that entire game, from kickoff to shaking your opponents’ hands?

Sampson: I’ve worked really hard with these kids and I felt like they were at the point were they could win. The week before we lost to a pretty freakin’ good team by three point. I told my guys that they needed to understand to be humble because they had been on the losing side before.

Q: How did you celebrate the program’s first win since 2011?

Sampson: At the end, and it was looking obvious, I got the ol’ water cooler on my head. We’re not finished, good lord, we have six more games to win! So we can prove to people it wasn’t just a fluke.

Football roundup: Cripple Creek-Victor snaps 35-game losing streak

Cripple Creek-Victor snapped a 35-game losing streak on Friday with a 65-31 win over Colorado Deaf & Blind.

It was the program’s first win since the 2011 season — and first on-field win since 2010, a span of 42 games.

The Pioneers went 0-9 each of the past two seasons, 0-7 in 2013, and 0-8 in 2012. They were 1-8 in 2011, losing their final game after getting a forfeit win against Limon on Oct. 21, 2011.

Their last on-field win came against Ellicott in the final game of the 2010 season, with a 20-6 victory on Oct. 30, 2010.

The Pioneers nearly snapped the losing streak last week. They led Hanover 25-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but gave up 14 points in the final frame to lose 28-25.

Friday night, there would be no such letdown with the 34-point win.

Pueblo West nearly pulled off the upset, leading much of the second half, but Pueblo East got a touchdown from Bryson Torres with a minute to play to secure its 15th in a row.

Pueblo West held leads of 8-3, 14-11, 21-11 and 21-17 before East’s comeback.

Pueblo East’s winning streak is tied for the longest current active steak in the state.

4A/3A: Niwot 17, Summit 14

Niwot is 2-0 following its win over Summit.

The Cougars, who snapped a 24-game losing streak last October, haven’t started a season 2-0 since 2005, when they finished 9-2.

In fact, Niwot hasn’t won two games in a season since 2013. And both wins this year have been of the come-from-behind variety.

“I’m really proud of the kids’ fortitude,” Niwot coach Dylan Hollingsworth told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “Anytime we were down last year, you knew it was over. We never responded well to it. And they have really played hard through the adversity this year.”

The game marked a return for Hollingsworth, who left Summit after 10 seasons to take over Niwot in 2015.

“It was interesting being on the opposite sideline, looking at everything that I’ve always had my back to, and having my back to everything that I’ve always looked at,” Hollingsworth said.
