The all-state football teams for Season C

The Season C all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first team, second team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-2A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

3A girls tennis: D’Evelyn, Colorado Academy finish Day 1 atop team standings

(Jon E. Yunt)

COLORADO SPRINGS – We’ve all heard the saying before, that it is impossible to win a state championship on Day 1, but you can certainly lose it.

On Friday at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs in the first two rounds of the Class 3A state tournament, both of the team tournament favorites upheld their end of the winning bargain. Both D’Evelyn and Colorado Academy went a perfect 14-0 on the first day and sit atop the team leaderboard with 21 points in the modified scoring system that has been implemented this season.
“So far so good. Day one is always survive and take one match at a time,” said D’Evelyn coach Woody Oliver, whose team finished second in 2019. “This is always the toughest challenge of the season as far as the pressure is concerned and the best things we could do today was take a deep breath and relax, then work your way through the match as best you can.”
Not many of the Jaguars players needed to catch their breath though. They were on and off the courts relatively quickly on Friday, surrendering just 25 games in the 12 matches between No. 2 singles and No. 4 doubles.
The lone exception was at No. 1 singles, where junior Grace Li breezed through her opening round match and then had to work hard for a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the quarterfinals over Aspen senior Macy Hopkinson. Li will play St. Mary’s Ellie Hartman in the semifinals tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
A lot of them are just happy to be playing considering what happened last year and basically all the stuff they have been through the last two years,” Oliver said. “They are all very hungry and very excited to be here and the message tomorrow is that we have been talking about for a long time now, you have the opportunity you wanted and now is the time to get it done.”
D’Evelyn and Colorado Academy on the opposite side of the bracket at six of the positions and will only meet up once in the semifinals at No. 2 doubles.
“You get to the semifinals at state and everybody is good,” Oliver said. “It’s less about who is on the other side and more about taking care of your own business and playing your best when it matters most.”
As good as D’Evelyn was, Colorado Academy was equally as impressive. The Mustangs dropped just one set in advancing everyone to the semifinals. Mustangs sophomore Anna Jordaan was spectacular in moving into the No. 1 singles semis. She dropped just two games in the opening match and then beat The Vanguard’s Jordyn Van Manen 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters.
But as nice as the individual title would be for Jordaan, whose sister Caroline was a state golf champion at CA, she has her sights set on the team title as well.
“I didn’t really go in thinking about outcomes, I was just focused on one match at a time and one game at a time,” she said. “But for me, it isn’t so much about winning the individual title, it’s about the team title. The team is doing well and that’s great.”
After D’Evelyn and CA, Dawson sits in third place with 13 points and four spots in the semifinals. Holy Family is currently in fourth with 10 points and has three spots in the semifinals.

3A football semifinals: No. 4 Rifle and No. 2 TCA to meet for state crown

More photos. (Alan Versaw)

A showdown is set for the Season C Class 3A football title as Rifle and The Classical Academy will meet at the CSU-Pueblo Thunderbowl on Saturday.

Each team battled through tough semifinal matchups but emerged victorious and will advance to next weekend. The 3A football title game is set to kickoff on Saturday at 2 p.m.

(4) Rifle 20, (1) Glenwood Springs 17 (OT)

If the Western Slope teams are in the habit of playing in exciting football games, next week will be a treat for the fans as the CSU-Pueblo Thunderbowl. Top-seeded Glenwood Springs had every bit of hope of reaching the 3A title game, but had to get through a talented and well-coached Rifle team.

It turned out to be too tough a task.

The Demons fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter, but quickly tied the game. The two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter and then the defenses clamped down in the second half as neither team was able to break the tie. Regulation ended with the two teams still locked in a 14-14 stalemate.

The Rifle defense held Glenwood to just a field goal attempt and then the offense rewarded the effort by scoring a quick touchdown to send the Bears to Pueblo next Saturday.

It was a satisfying win for the Bears after they had lost to Glenwood 22-15 back on April 16. The Bears were ranked No. 1 in the state at the time and the Demons propelled themselves into that position after that win. But with the Bears getting even, they maintain a chance to end the season as a champion, the definitive accomplishment of a No. 1 team.

(2) The Classical Academy 39, (6) Sand Creek 13

Sand Creek took an early lead on a fumble recovery from Greg Garnett, but TCA’s explosive offense eventually showed up and allowed the Titans to take control.

Cade Palmer rushed for three touchdowns and helped TCA build a 32-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. TCA eventually added another score to complete the win.

It was an odd feeling for the Titans as they hadn’t trailed at any point this season and found themselves playing from behind after the first quarter.

They went 4-0 in the regular season and and gave up just 19 total points in that span. Sand Creek officially gave the Titans their toughest challenge of the season. The Scorpions were ahead after the first and they scored more points than any other opponent that TCA has faced this season.

Football Rankings: The final coaches poll of the regular season

In the final coaches poll of the Season C regular season, Denver South, Thomas Jefferson, Glenwood Springs, Buena Vista and Hoehne were voted No. 1 in their respective classifications.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Complete rankings are below.
