All-state baseball teams for Season D

The Season D all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

Player and coach of the year was also selected by a vote of the coaches.

2021 MLB Draft: Six Colorado products selected

(Steve Abeyta)

The 2021 MLB Draft was held July 11-13 at Denver’s Bellco Theatre. Below is a profile of the six Colorado products selected.

Last season, two players who played high school baseball in Colorado were taken.

Regis Jesuit graduate and right-handed pitcher Alec Willis became the first Colorado product selected in the 2021 MLB draft, as he was picked in the seventh round, 211th overall, by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Willis was MLB.com’s 130th-ranked prospect after a senior season in which he finished 3-1 with a 0.72 ERA and 54 strikeouts (against eight walks) in 29 innings pitched.

Willis has signed his letter of intent to attend the University of Minnesota. With Willis’ selection, a Regis Jesuit grad has been chosen in an MLB Draft 29 times.

Three 2017 Colorado high school graduates were selected next, led by 2017 Heritage grad Casey Opitz, who attends college baseball powerhouse Arkansas. Opitz was selected in the eighth round, 244th overall, by the Chicago Cubs.

Opitz was one of the top backstops in college baseball, being named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List in 2019, while also earning Preseason All-American honors. In 2021, he was a team captain for an Arkansas team that entered the NCAA Baseball Tournament as the number one overall seed.

At Heritage, he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 27th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. His senior season, he was ranked the No. 3 player in the state of Colorado and the top catcher overall.

He is the third Opitz brother to be taken in an MLB Draft, following Shane (2010) and Jake (2008).

Opitz also played basketball and football for the Eagles at times during his high school career.

2017 Lewis-Palmer grad Billy Cook, a 2021 Pepperdine graduate, went next to the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round, 287th overall.

Cook was a four-year starter at Pepperdine, appearing in 122 games with 109 starts. He finished tied for ninth in all-time home runs in Pepperdine history. In 2021, he was selected first team all-West Coast Conference.

At Lewis-Palmer, Cook was a three-time 4A all-state honoree, while helping the Rangers to a pair of conference championships.

He is the fourth Lewis-Palmer grad to be drafted all-time, and the first since 2008.

Jack Winkler, a 2017 Chatfield grad, was next to go later in the 10th round, 308th overall to the Oakland Athletics.

Winkler was a four year starter for the University of San Francisco, his last three seasons as the primary shortstop. He had a tremendous campaign in 2021, taking home first team all-West Coast Conference accolades. In four seasons at USF, he played in 184 games, making 180 starts. A career .276 hitter, he totaled 186 hits, 43 doubles, 14 home runs, and 104 RBI.

At Chatfield, he was a three-time all-conference honoree, while helping the Chargers to a 5A title in 2015.

Going back to the recent Colorado high school grads, another Chatfield Charger in Quinton Low went in the 13th round, 387th overall, to the Milwaukee Brewers. With him and Winkler selected, they became the 10th and 11th Chatfield alums drafted all-time.

Low was a two-way star for Chatfield, batting .492 with 30 hits and nine home runs in 2021, while making seven pitching appearances with a 3.00 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 35 innings. He helped Chatfield to the 5A quarterfinals in 2021.

He has signed his letter of intent to attend Santa Clara University.

The final Colorado product selected was Ryan Ure of Eaton, taken in the 16th round, 464th overall, by the Texas Rangers.

Ure was Eaton’s ace this past season, pitching to a 2.07 ERA over 44 innings, while compiling a 7-0 record with 83 strikeouts. He helped lead the Fightin’ Reds to the 3A baseball title.

Ure is signed to play in college with Oklahoma State. He continues Eaton’s rich MLB Draft tradition, as he is the ninth Eaton grad selected all-time, and the first since 2012.

4A baseball: Ponderosa gets two walk-off bombs on Day 1 of state tournament

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — In two pitches, Ponderosa first baseman Dom Lopez had the best start to the Class 4A state baseball tournament of anyone that made the trip to Pueblo.

After trailing Evergreen 5-0 after just the second inning, the Mustangs had to battle back in their opening contest. They did just that and kept the Cougars off the board for the remainder of the game.

On the first pitch that Lopez saw in the bottom of the seventh inning, he decided it was time to end it. He ripped the first pitch he saw to centerfield and trotted around the bases ready to jump into the celebration of his awaiting teammates at home plate.

The next pitch he saw was his first at-bat in the Mustangs’ second game of the day. He hit it to nearly the same spot beyond the centerfield wall to make it a 2-0 lead for Pondo and the Mustangs went on to beat Cheyenne Mountain 10-8 as teammate Derek Lukes followed suit with a walk-off bomb of his own.

“I really like going after the first pitch,” Lopez said. “I think it’s the best pitch you’ll get the whole at-bat so I always go for that first one, no matter what.”

The Mustangs (17-2 overall) will get a bit of a breather before they head to Rawlings Field on the campus of CSU-Pueblo. They’ll take on Holy Family who flexed its muscles offensively with a 12-2 win over Lewis-Palmer to start the day then followed it up with a 12-3 win over D’Evelyn.

The winner of Holy Family and Ponderosa will be the lone unbeaten team in the 4A tournament heading into next weekend, which is ideal in this modified double-elimination bracket.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

In the first day of a state baseball tournament in over two years, the actions between Hobbs Field and Andenucio Field at the Runyon complex couldn’t have been any different. The Tigers (17-1) showed dominance on the way to their two wins at Hobbs. In the second game of the day, Holy Family scored nine runs across three innings to take a big lead over the Jaguars. Brennan Bennett, Connor Cooney, Jared Delgado, Isaac Siefken and Jaden Delgado all scored twice through the course of the game.

D’Evelyn had taken down No. 1 Severance 11-4 earlier in the day.

The thrillers came from Andenucio. Down 5-0 to Evergreen after the first two innings, the Mustangs battled back to tie the game before Lopez ended it with a solo shot in the seventh.

Cheyenne Mountain shook off any homefield advantage that Pueblo County was getting to get a 7-3 win.

Ponderosa started its game with Cheyenne Mountain off with Lopez’s second home run of the day. Cheyenne Mountain tied the game at two then pulled even 8-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Lopez was walked to start the inning and then Lukes just saw his pitch and blasted it to left field.

“That’s always going through my mind,” Lukes said. “After what Dom did in the first game and the momentum we had, I kind of knew what was going to happen. There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to win it.”

Severance will play Lewis-Palmer in an elimination game at Rawlings Field at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Evergreen and Pueblo County will follow suit at noon. The game between Ponderosa and Holy Family will go off at 7: 30 p.m. with the winner taking control of the state tournament going into championship weekend.

Photos: Arapahoe takes down Lewis-Palmer in first round of 5A boys lacrosse tournament

It’s onto the second round of the Class 5A boys lacrosse tournament for No. 7 Arapahoe after getting a 12-6 win over No. 10 Lewis-Palmer.

Lewis-Palmer slugs its way past Longmont and into 4A baseball tournament

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

MONUMENT — After watching what Longmont’s Danny Barker did against Palisade, Lewis-Palmer knew getting to the Class 4A state baseball tournament in Pueblo was going to be anything but easy.

Scoring a lot of runs seemed like the obvious way to advance and it turned out that each one mattered as the Rangers grabbed a 15-13 win over the Trojans to stay alive for another weekend.

In the game prior, Longmont beat Palisade 14-11 and Barker played a huge role in that game, going 3-for-4 with three home runs. The Trojans put together 19 hits and didn’t never struck out. Coming into the regional championship game, L-P coach Brett Lester knew his pitchers had their work cut out for them.

“First you have to execute your pitch,” Lester said. “Don’t let the situation become bigger than it is. Throw strikes early in the count, (keep the ball) down in the zone and just execute the best that you can.”

From a hitting standpoint, the Rangers (14-3 overall) were fine early. Two singles turned into two runs thanks a double from Tommy Fiocchi. He scored later in the inning on a balk from Longmont pitcher Herbie Mitchell.

Just like they had in the win over Palisade, the Trojans (12-6) eventually got the bats rolling. Down two runs heads into the top of the 4th, John Vandiver and Tristan Rangel reached on back-to-back hits. Vandiver scored on a Danny O’Brien single and Alec Northouse followed that up with a bases clearing double to put them in the lead.

A Fiocchi sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning pulled the Rangers even again and then a huge 2-RBI single from Matt Rhoades gave the Rangers a burst of energy. He followed that up with another big at-bat in the 5th, that one a 3-RBI double that helped stretch out the lead.

“It completely changed the momentum of the game,” Rhoades said. “They were fired the entire time and both those hits just shut them down and rose our dugout up to the point where the game was a loss at that point for them.”

Perhaps, but Longmont had been the hard-to-beat team all day. Each time Palisade had a big inning, the Trojans found a way to climb back. Part that effort came off Barker’s bat.

After grounding out to second in the first inning, his next three at-bats all ending with a baseball heading toward the housing development just east of Lewis-Palmer High School.

As luck would have it, Barker had a chance to make a difference yet again. Longmont trailed 16-9 heading into the top of the 6th, but scored four runs to make it a two-run game. With a runner on first, Barker stepped to the plate with one out, representing the tying run.

Lester make a swift pitching change, bringing Caleb Pepper, a sophomore with a nasty curveball to get arguably the biggest of the season for the Ranger.

Pepper started off with a strike, then a ball. He got Barker swinging at strike two and then unleashed the breaking ball to get him fanning on strike three.

“I was just trying to attack him with strikes,” Pepper said. “If he hits it, he hits it. I just went at him. Some people might try to pitch around him but they end up leaving one (in the zone) and he’ll hit it over the fence. If you go at him, you make him make the play.”

Pepper allowed a base hit to Jacob Moats but struck out Vandiver to keep Lewis-Palmer’s season alive. The Rangers head to Pueblo on Friday for the first weekend of the 4A baseball tournament.
