MONUMENT — After watching what Longmont’s Danny Barker did against Palisade, Lewis-Palmer knew getting to the Class 4A state baseball tournament in Pueblo was going to be anything but easy.
Scoring a lot of runs seemed like the obvious way to advance and it turned out that each one mattered as the Rangers grabbed a 15-13 win over the Trojans to stay alive for another weekend.
In the game prior, Longmont beat Palisade 14-11 and Barker played a huge role in that game, going 3-for-4 with three home runs. The Trojans put together 19 hits and didn’t never struck out. Coming into the regional championship game, L-P coach Brett Lester knew his pitchers had their work cut out for them.
“First you have to execute your pitch,” Lester said. “Don’t let the situation become bigger than it is. Throw strikes early in the count, (keep the ball) down in the zone and just execute the best that you can.”
From a hitting standpoint, the Rangers (14-3 overall) were fine early. Two singles turned into two runs thanks a double from Tommy Fiocchi. He scored later in the inning on a balk from Longmont pitcher Herbie Mitchell.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
Just like they had in the win over Palisade, the Trojans (12-6) eventually got the bats rolling. Down two runs heads into the top of the 4th, John Vandiver and Tristan Rangel reached on back-to-back hits. Vandiver scored on a Danny O’Brien single and Alec Northouse followed that up with a bases clearing double to put them in the lead.
A Fiocchi sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning pulled the Rangers even again and then a huge 2-RBI single from Matt Rhoades gave the Rangers a burst of energy. He followed that up with another big at-bat in the 5th, that one a 3-RBI double that helped stretch out the lead.
“It completely changed the momentum of the game,” Rhoades said. “They were fired the entire time and both those hits just shut them down and rose our dugout up to the point where the game was a loss at that point for them.”
Perhaps, but Longmont had been the hard-to-beat team all day. Each time Palisade had a big inning, the Trojans found a way to climb back. Part that effort came off Barker’s bat.
After grounding out to second in the first inning, his next three at-bats all ending with a baseball heading toward the housing development just east of Lewis-Palmer High School.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
As luck would have it, Barker had a chance to make a difference yet again. Longmont trailed 16-9 heading into the top of the 6th, but scored four runs to make it a two-run game. With a runner on first, Barker stepped to the plate with one out, representing the tying run.
Lester make a swift pitching change, bringing Caleb Pepper, a sophomore with a nasty curveball to get arguably the biggest of the season for the Ranger.
Pepper started off with a strike, then a ball. He got Barker swinging at strike two and then unleashed the breaking ball to get him fanning on strike three.
“I was just trying to attack him with strikes,” Pepper said. “If he hits it, he hits it. I just went at him. Some people might try to pitch around him but they end up leaving one (in the zone) and he’ll hit it over the fence. If you go at him, you make him make the play.”
Pepper allowed a base hit to Jacob Moats but struck out Vandiver to keep Lewis-Palmer’s season alive. The Rangers head to Pueblo on Friday for the first weekend of the 4A baseball tournament.

COLORADO SPRINGS — It wasn’t the most ideal start for Palmer Ridge, but it’s not the start that counts. It’s the finish. The Bears completed a 25-17, 25-9, 25-14 sweep over No. 3 Palisade to advance to the semifinals of the Class 4A girls volleyball tournament.
It’s the second straight state semifinal appearance for Palmer Ridge and the team is hoping to get back to the state championship match, where they made it last year before losing to rival Lewis-Palmer.
But there is no Lewis-Palmer to overcome this season. And by knocking out the No. 3 team on the bracket, advancing to a state title match is very much in the cards and something the Bears expect out of themselves after being there in November 2019.
“Our games this season were a little rougher than last season,” senior Riley Anderson said. “I feel like with that (win over Palisade), we finally showed what we were made of and what we could do.”
The Bears had to battle through some nerves early as Palisade jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. Once they found their footing, the Bears clawed right back into the match and eventually jumped out to a 10-7 lead, forcing the Bulldogs to call timeout and try to make some adjustments.
But that was easier said than done. The Bears took firm control of the first set and never let up through the next two to get the win and remain alive for Thursday’s slate of games.
In this single-elimination bracket, the stakes tend to feel a bit higher with each points and even after getting a win, the Bears know how much pressure each team is facing. To alleviate the pressure, the Bears have taken a stance to play more aggressively to maintain an element of control.
“We’ve talked all season about being more aggressive,” Anderson said. “We have to give it our all from the start and we’ve shown that here.”

(1) Windsor 3, (8) The Classical Academy 0

(Brad Cochi)
Top-seeded Windsor had to fend off a scrappy TCA team but came away with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 win to advance to the 4A semifinals.
The Titans hung tough through the first set, extending it past the necessary 25-point mark to determine a winner. After the Wizards claimed the first set, they were able to keep TCA at an arm’s length for the rest of the match to remain undefeated on the year. Windsor will be back on the floor at at 2 p.m. Thursday for their semifinal match against Mead.
(2) Cheyenne Mountain 3, (7) Discovery Canyon 0
In the first match of the season, Discovery Canyon had Cheyenne Mountain down 2-0 before Cheyenne Mountain roared back to tie the match and send it to a deciding fifth set where they closed it out.
Cheyenne Mountain learned a valuable lesson in starting strong so that battling from behind isn’t necessary. This time, the Thunder wasn’t given an opportunity to take the lead as Cheyenne Mountain pulled away in the third set to get a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 win and advance to the semifinals for the second straight year.
Cheyenne Mountain will meet PPAC rival Palmer Ridge at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
(5) Mead 3, (4) Coronado 1
Coronado claimed the first set, but ran out of steam allowing Mead to climb back and get a 16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 win to move on to Thursday’s semifinals.
Mead entered the 2019 tournament as the No. 4 seed but dropped their first two matches for a stunning early exit. That’s not the case this year as the Mavericks will meet Windsor on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Windsor won the regular season meeting 3-2 on April 19.

The Student Leadership committee has selected fifteen students from a competitive list of over eighty applicants to serve as the 2021-22 CHSAA State Reps. The final selections, which include a diverse group of students from every corner of Colorado, each offer unique backgrounds and perspectives that stood out among their peers.
“I was impressed with the resumes of each applicant,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Justin Saylor, who oversees student leadership. “Each student had proven leadership qualities, which made narrowing the list down extremely difficult. I commend the committee for their hard work and look forward to working with this group of State Reps over the course of next school year.”
The State Reps will have a daunting task ahead as they continue to navigate the obstacles put forth by the COVID-19 pandemic that shifted all 2020-2021 CHSAA Student Leadership events to virtual platforms and will continue into the 2021 Summer Conference.
Led by State Rep Advisor Trey Downey (Central HS – Grand Junction), the group will go to work right away, planning for all Student Leadership programming for the upcoming school year.
State Reps will have myriad responsibilities, some of which include sitting on various CHSAA committees, assisting in the coordination of Student Leadership Summer and Fall Conferences, and being a voice for the CHSAA student body as a whole.
The final list includes two returning State Reps and thirteen new members, comprising ten seniors, three juniors, and two sophomores.
