All-state girls soccer teams for Season D

The Season D all-state girls soccer teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches.

3A girls tennis: D’Evelyn, Colorado Academy finish Day 1 atop team standings

(Jon E. Yunt)

COLORADO SPRINGS – We’ve all heard the saying before, that it is impossible to win a state championship on Day 1, but you can certainly lose it.

On Friday at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs in the first two rounds of the Class 3A state tournament, both of the team tournament favorites upheld their end of the winning bargain. Both D’Evelyn and Colorado Academy went a perfect 14-0 on the first day and sit atop the team leaderboard with 21 points in the modified scoring system that has been implemented this season.
“So far so good. Day one is always survive and take one match at a time,” said D’Evelyn coach Woody Oliver, whose team finished second in 2019. “This is always the toughest challenge of the season as far as the pressure is concerned and the best things we could do today was take a deep breath and relax, then work your way through the match as best you can.”
Not many of the Jaguars players needed to catch their breath though. They were on and off the courts relatively quickly on Friday, surrendering just 25 games in the 12 matches between No. 2 singles and No. 4 doubles.
The lone exception was at No. 1 singles, where junior Grace Li breezed through her opening round match and then had to work hard for a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the quarterfinals over Aspen senior Macy Hopkinson. Li will play St. Mary’s Ellie Hartman in the semifinals tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
A lot of them are just happy to be playing considering what happened last year and basically all the stuff they have been through the last two years,” Oliver said. “They are all very hungry and very excited to be here and the message tomorrow is that we have been talking about for a long time now, you have the opportunity you wanted and now is the time to get it done.”
D’Evelyn and Colorado Academy on the opposite side of the bracket at six of the positions and will only meet up once in the semifinals at No. 2 doubles.
“You get to the semifinals at state and everybody is good,” Oliver said. “It’s less about who is on the other side and more about taking care of your own business and playing your best when it matters most.”
As good as D’Evelyn was, Colorado Academy was equally as impressive. The Mustangs dropped just one set in advancing everyone to the semifinals. Mustangs sophomore Anna Jordaan was spectacular in moving into the No. 1 singles semis. She dropped just two games in the opening match and then beat The Vanguard’s Jordyn Van Manen 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters.
But as nice as the individual title would be for Jordaan, whose sister Caroline was a state golf champion at CA, she has her sights set on the team title as well.
“I didn’t really go in thinking about outcomes, I was just focused on one match at a time and one game at a time,” she said. “But for me, it isn’t so much about winning the individual title, it’s about the team title. The team is doing well and that’s great.”
After D’Evelyn and CA, Dawson sits in third place with 13 points and four spots in the semifinals. Holy Family is currently in fourth with 10 points and has three spots in the semifinals.

History made as Pueblo East crowned CHSAA’s first Unified Bowling champion

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

ENGLEWOOD — In a setting usually reserved for recreational fun, the Colorado High School Activities Association broke ground on history.

Across several bowling lanes, competitors from nine schools made a run at a state Unified Bowling championship. Pueblo East might’ve walked away with the first-place trophy, but everyone came away as winners.

The Eagles scored a total of 431 pins to hold off district rival Pueblo Central, who finished with 389. But loud applause greeted each team who qualified for Friday’s state tournament as awards were handed out. It was a monumental moment in the growth of high school sports in Colorado.

“This is very beneficial for our athletes,” Eagles coach Levi Martinez said. “It’s about time we get something for the ESS and United program going. These kids deserve it. It’s a great day and it’s amazing everybody here cheering for everybody.”

They were all certainly competing against each other, but the kids never once celebrated anyone’s misfortune on another lane. It started as a bit of a nerve-racking experience but once the athletes got settled in, it turned into the same atmosphere that the kids have experienced all season long.

There was only happiness flowing through the AMF Belleview Lanes, no sadness or disappointment.

“It was a really special experience for me and my teammates,” East’s Diego Anaya said. “The teamwork we had was amazing, so was the compassion and sportsmanship that everyone had for each other. It was a special day today.”

Anaya, Precious Guerra and Kyle Meyer made up the primary athlete group for the Eagles with Ebony Padilla-Andrews Orlando Trujillo or Miles Chaves serving as alternates. Martinez, Chuck Blagg and Jeremiah Blaha coached the team in their championship run.

Championships were hardly the primary takeaways for the day. The competition itself will serve as a foundation in which other Unified programs can build on.

“Over the years we have had the opportunity to watch these amazing athletes put it all out there, in exhibition matches and  games,” assistant commissioner Jenn Robert’s-Uhlig said. “This year we were able to have a culminating state event to showcase their talents and crown them with a state title. It was a Monumental occasion. It was a great day for unified athletes and the continual growth of the CHSAA.”

The season and state tournament was also made possible with the effort of Special Olympics Colorado. The program was instrumental in organizing the event and making every athlete feel like a champion once it was concluded.

“It’s setting the example that all the students in the building can contribute in sports and leadership,” senior VP of Sports and Unified Schools Chaka Sutton said. “So often the special needs get overlooked and this goes to show that they can accomplish great things for their schools.”

Both Sutton and Ben Wrubel were recognized for their contributions to the event, but it was seeing the athletes competing that served as the main reward for them.

They saw history made from the moment warmups began to the time that Pueblo East was crowned state champion. For all the athletes, Friday marked an accomplishment that can never be taken away from them.
