Jeffco Preps With Pleuss is a monthly roundup of Jeffco prep highlights hosted by Dennis Pleuss, Jeffco Public Schools’ sports information director. The Season C sports wrapped up with Ralston Valley, Columbine and Chatfield girls volleyball squads all advancing to the Class 5A state tournament held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. D’Evelyn’s girls soccer team got off to a good start in the deep Class 4A Jeffco League with a victory over Standley Lake at Lakewood Memorial Field. Golden’s girls lacrosse, along with Columbine and Green Mountain boys lacrosse team pulled off victories at Trailblazer Stadium as the extended Spring 2021 season got underway. Golden baseball coach Jackie McBroom grabbed his 100th career coaching victory and Chatfield baseball showed why the Chargers are a favorite to contend for the 5A state title later this June.

ARVADA — Golden and Valor Christian girls golf programs were able to sweep the team and individual medalist titles this spring in the Class 4A and 5A Jeffco League.

Golden junior Jessica Morrissey dominated the 4A Jeffco race to the medalist title. Morrissey shot a round of 88 during the final conference tournament of the season May 27 at Indian Tree Golf Course. Her 41.9 9-hole average over the five league tournaments was nearly 5 strokes better than runner-up Littleton senior Sarah Young that finished with a 46.50 9-hole average.

Morrissey spearheaded the Demons’ run to the 4A Jeffco League team title. Conifer placed second and Evergreen took third in the team standings.

Valor cruised to the 5A Jeffco team title winning all five conference tournaments. Valor senior Grace Young’s 37.8 9-hole average was a full stroke better than Arvada West senior Anju Ogi to claim the 5A Jeffco medalist title.

Lakewood finished second and Ralston Valley third in the 5A Jeffco team standings.

The Season C all-state boys soccer teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These team were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of coaches.

WHEAT RIDGE — It was a first for Standley Lake senior Connor Peck on Wednesday.

“We have never beat Wheat Ridge in my four years here,” Peck said after the Gators took a 12-6 victory on the Farmers’ home baseball field. “It feels really great to beat Wheat Ridge finally. It’s a big win for us. We really needed this today.”

The Gators (3-2, 3-2 in Class 4A Jeffco League) find themselves just one game in the loss column behind Evergreen (4-1), D’Evelyn (4-1) and Golden (3-1) for the conference lead midway through the league season.

Standley Lake has league losses to Evergreen and Green Mountain, but has a quality win over Golden. The Demons actually handed Evergreen its first conference loss Wednesday at All-Star Park in Lakewood.

“This team has so much talent. We just need something to bring it all together,” Standley Lake coach Jesse Lopez said. “ We are starting to find out who we are after facing some tough competition like Wheat Ridge, Golden and Evergreen.”

The Gators found several different ways to score against Wheat Ridge (2-5, 2-3). Standley Lake took advantage of control issues by the Farmer pitchers and had a number of bunts with runners at third that resulted in runs.

“We work really hard on the small ball,” Lopez said. “Everything we do is precision based, but it doesn’t work without the long game as well. They go hand-in-hand.”

Wheat Ridge took a 2-0 lead thanks to a 2-run home run by senior Scott Kingman in the bottom of the first inning, but Standley Lake answered with a 4-run bottom of the second.

The big inning for the Gators came in the top of the fifth. Standley Lake had a 5-run inning that was topped off with a 3-run triple by Peck.

“It felt great off the bat,” Peck said of the drive to deep right-center field that gave the Gators a commanding 10-4 lead. “That was a real big game-changer. We needed all those runs.”

On the hill, Lopez utilized four different pitchers. Junior lefty Logan Schmidt went the first three innings. Sophomore Ian Rasmussen threw the next three innings for the Gators. Senior Jakob Worm struck out a pair of batters in the seventh, but was pulled after a pair of walks. Sophomore Cannon Frost got the final out with a strikeout to close out the game.

“This year we have been so fortunate to have so much depth in our bullpen,” Lopez said. “This is really going to benefit us when we have back-to-back-to-back games. They did great. They threw strikes and the defense got out when they needed to.”

Wheat Ridge had some chances. The Farmers left a dozen runners on the bases, including leaving the bases loaded in each of the final three innings.

“Sooner or later we’ve got to get a big hit,” Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller said. “We squared some ball up today, but they were hit right at guys.”

It was the third straight loss for the Farmers.

“We weren’t sharp,” Miller said. “We are in a bad stretch right now. We just aren’t very good right now. I hope that changes.”

Wheat Ridge returns to action Saturday with a big game against Evergreen before facing rival Golden on Tuesday next week.

“We’ve got to reel off four or five in a row or it’s ‘Goodnight, Irene’,” Miller said.

Golden girls soccer scored a goal in each half to edge out Standley Lake 2-1 in a Jeffco League showdown on Friday.

Standley Lake and Lakewood boys’ soccer teams combined to end a 57-year drought between the two programs when it came to winning a league title. Ralston Valley and Evergreen girls’ volleyball programs also celebrated winning conference championships. The gymnastics season came to an end with some stellar individual performances by Jeffco gymnasts.

THORNTON – Mia Curry’s high school gymnastics career continues to unfold ahead of schedule.

The Niwot junior won the Class 4A all-around state championship as a sophomore in 2019, surpassing her personal expectation of competing for the top spot as an upperclassman. On Saturday, it was revealed that Curry’s performance while leading the Cougars to a third-place team finish on Friday was good enough for a second all-around gold.

Curry’s repeat bid at Thornton High School wasn’t an easy one, as 4A team champion Elizabeth’s Bethany Breikss (36.675) and Standley Lake’s Tessa Grudle (36.6) gave her a run for her money. But Niwot’s star gymnast posted a 36.9 all-around score to edge her talented competitors and hold on at the pinnacle of her classification.

“This one, I think I was actually more surprised than the last one,” Curry said. “It’s a different kind of surprised because last time, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m a sophomore, it’s improbable because I haven’t had as much experience as other people. But this one, there was such a great amount of competition between all the girls that were in the top eight. It was crazy, so it was really surprising that I got to compete against all these girls that are just as good, if not better, than me and I was able to overcome and fight to get that first place.”

In Saturday’s individual events, Curry won the balance beam and uneven bars with scores of 9.45 and 9.05, respectively, and was top five in the other two events. She won individual floor championship last season and now has three individual golds in her prep career.

Helping her finish runner-up in the all-around, Breikss won the 4A vault individual title with a score of 9.35. It was her first individual title.

“I’m just so amazed that I could be here in the first place, so I wasn’t even worried about what everybody else was doing and just focused on doing what I needed to do,” Breikss said. “With COVID, we weren’t sure if we’d even get a season at all. But we got to be here through everything. And I got the championship in vault. After getting third last year, I really brought it so I could get first.”

Grudle won the floor routine individual championship with a score of 9.625. She was second in both beam and bars.
