Dunks and 3-pointers reign in Jeffco HS Senior Basketball game

LAKEWOOD — Valor Christian senior Amondo Miller’s final dunk finished off a fun night Thursday at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse.

The Blue squad took a 130-124 victory in the boys’ Jeffco High School Senior Basketball Game. The annual game featuring the top seniors in the Class 5A and 4A Jeffco Leagues didn’t take place last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While dunks and optional defense was in full force, the 3-point shooting was particularly sharp by the co-MVPs. Columbine senior Garrett Rogers and Wheat Ridge senior Westin Miller poured in seven 3-pointers each to lead both of their teams in scoring.

“I was just shooting and having a good time,” said Rogers, who had a game-high 29 points. “I appreciate Gold Crown for putting this on. It was amazing.”

The Blue squad actually trailed 97-91 heading into the final 10-minute quarter. However, the Blue team scored 39 points in the final quarter to win going away. Green Mountain senior Austin Peterson got hot from 3-point range hitting a trio from long range in the final quarter.

Valor’s Miller and AJ Kula combined for 14 points in the final quarter and Rogers canned a pair of 3-pointers for good measure to pull out the come-from-behind victory.

“It was just really fun playing with all the guys. You play them during league and you know them because of club,” Rogers said. “It is always a great time getting out there and playing together.”

Wheat Ridge’s Miller started the game off with a 3-pointer in the opening seconds. The Farmer has being getting ready for the upcoming high school baseball season, but getting one last chance on the hardwood with fellow Wheat Ridge teammate Dominic Cross was special.

“It was awesome. I got to play one more basketball game,” said Miller, who has signed to play baseball next school year at Regis University. “I’ve been practicing baseball, so it was nice to get back out on the court. Most of us are competitors, but when it comes to this they are your teammates now.”

There were more than 40 3-pointers made in the game. Almost every time down the court it was either a bomb from long range or a driving dunk.

“It was a good shooting night for both of us,” Miller said of him and Rogers combining for 14 3-pointers. “I had no idea who he was at first, but he was ripping every shot he took.”

Lakewood’s Michael Bennett, Dakota Ridge’s Gino Corridori, Bear Creek’s Liam Franks, Evergreen’s Griffin Lauritano and Jared Stiller, Cross along with Westin Miller were all in double-digits for the White squad coached by Evergreen’s boys basketball coach Jeff Dolan.

Rogers and Amondo Miller combined for over 50 points. Ralston Valley’s Blake Butvidas, D’Evelyn’s Luke Kjellsen, Kula and Peterson all reach double-digit points for the victorious Blue team.

It marked the end of the prep basketball season in Jeffco that had its challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It shows how much we have progressed through this tough time,” Rogers said of having the game return to close out the basketball season.

Race for Jeffco League boys golf individual and team titles heating up

ARVADA — Friday at Indian Tree Golf Course was moving day of sorts for Class 5A and 4A Jeffco League boys golfers.

In the fourth of six scheduled Jeffco League tournaments, golfers made moves to position themselves for the final stretch that will determine individual and team titles.

Lakewood junior Max Lange, defending 5A Jeffco individual medalist, got himself in the mix to repeat as the conference champion. Lange shot the best round of the day with a 2-under-par, 68. The junior moved into seventh place for the individual medalist title.

Ralston Valley junior Gage Messingham and Lakewood senior Ryan Liao are leading the pack with Arvada West senior Tyler Tyson currently in third place. Ralston Valley senior Jack Larson, Columbine senior Drex Duffy and Ralston Valley senior Trey Kirschner are also still in the mix for the conference title. The top six golfers in 5A are separated by just 1-stroke when it comes to their 9-hole average.

Ralston Valley does have a sizable 47-shot lead in the team standings over second-place Lakewood.

In 4A, Conifer senior Dakota Dolph and Littleton junior Emmett Loomis tied for the individual title at Indian Tree. Both shot 5-over-par rounds of 75. Dolph and Green Mountain senior Oliver Gibbons are title atop of overall individual standings with a 9-hole average of 37.83.

The team race for the league title is just as tight. Evergreen and Green Mountain are tied with 1,310 total shots through the first four league tournaments.

The final two Jeffco League tournaments are scheduled for the Broadlands (Wednesday, Sept. 9) and West Woods Golf Course (Monday, Sept. 14). However, the possible winter storm that is forecasting from 5 to 8 inches of snow in the Denver Metro Area on Tuesday could cancel the tournament at Broadlands. If that becomes the case the individual and team titles will be decided at West Woods on Sept. 14.

No. 3 Valor win versus Columbine clinches 5A Jeffco League boys lacrosse title

LAKEWOOD — Making the transition from Class 4A to 5A in boys lacrosse hasn’t been an issue for Valor Christian this season.

The Eagles — No. 3 in the latest CHSAANow.com 5A boys lacrosse rankings — wrapped up an undefeated run in the 5A Jeffco League on Monday night with a 11-9 victory over Columbine.

“It means a lot,” Valor first-year head coach Josh Hoffman said of the Eagles claiming the Jeffco League crown in their first year in 5A. “That first year in 5A you don’t really know what you are going to walk into.”

Valor (14-0, 7-0 in 5A Jeffco) hasn’t dropped a game this season and was No. 2 in the RPI rankings before the conference finale win over Columbine (8-6, 5-2).

Valor won back-to-back 4A state titles in 2016 and 2017 under then head coach and lacrosse legend John Grant Jr. Last season the Eagles’ state championship run ended with a loss in the state quarterfinals to Dawson.

“As a team we just kind of wanted to send a message saying that we can hang here too,” Valor senior Lance Tillman said. “It’s awesome to get a team win. Coach Hoffman has been setting us up for this the whole year. He is doing great things for this program.”

Tillman did great things on the field against Columbine. The attacker who is headed to the University of North Carolina next fall to play lacrosse scored six goals. Tillman has 28 goals on the season to go along with his 20-plus assists.

“Lance is obviously a very talented player. He has drive like no kid I’ve ever seen,” Hoffman said. “You only get looks from people like Coach Breschi (University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse coach Joe Breschi) unless you work hard and are committed to your craft.”

Columbine came into the league finale after a pair of strong games in victories over Ralston Valley and Dakota Ridge last week. The Rebels never led, but closed the Eagles’ lead to 7-6 midway through the third quarter.

Columbine senior attacker Taylor Gustafson scored four straight goals of the Rebels, but Tillman put three goals into the back of the net in the final six minutes of the third quarter. Valor pushed it lead back up to 11-7 headed to the fourth quarter.

“Columbine is the one we have kind of talked about since the beginning of our season,” said Hoffman after the game that would decide the conference title. “We weren’t looking past anyone, but at the same time we knew Columbine was a great team.”

The Rebels got fourth quarter goals by sophomore Justin Bodie and junior Tanner Hollens, but it wasn’t enough for Columbine that is on the bubble to make the 16-team state tournament.

Columbine has a big non-league game against No. 2 Cherry Creek at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Legacy Stadium that could determine the playoff fate.

Valor closes out the regular season at home against Holy Family on Saturday, May 4.

“For us it’s everything,” Tillman said heading into the postseason. “The regular season means nothing if we don’t play good in the playoffs. We are really focused on that now.”

Lakewood’s Jack Castiglia eclipses field at Jeffco boys golf tourney

Lakewood senior Jack Castiglia shined the brightest Monday with a 3-under-par 69 at Bear Creek Golf Club. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood senior Jack Castiglia overshadowed everyone except for maybe the moon and sun Monday at Bear Creek Golf Club.

Castiglia shot a 3-under-par 69 in the third Jeffco League boys golf tournament of the season. The three-time state qualifier was 10 strokes ahead of 2nd place in the 5A Jeffco individual standings. Lakewood freshman Ryan Liao and Ralston Valley senior Jackson Zinn tied for 2nd with rounds of 79.

The round started out with a bang for Castiglia. He holed out from 120 yards out for eagle on the No. 2 par 4. A birdie on the No. 7 par 3 put him at 3-under-par 33 through the first nine holes, just as the solar eclipse was coming to a peak.

“I was expecting a little bit more,” Castiglia said of the eclipse. “It was probably a little cooler up in Wyoming.”

Most players had a pair of glasses to look at the eclipse. Many took time to take a look during the couple of hours. Players were told if the sky got too dark, play could be suspended. There was a significant drop in temperature for about 10 minutes, but there was plenty light to continue play without a delay.

“It was interesting,” Green Mountain senior Gabe Goodman said of the eclipse. “I don’t think it effected me too much. It was pretty cool, that’s for sure.”

Castiglia got to 4-under-par with a birdie on the par 5 12th hole, but back-to-back bogey and double-bogey on 13 and 14 gave the rest of the field a glimmer of hope to catch Castiglia.

However, the senior that has a stroke average of 70 — 6.5 shots better than any other 5A Jeffco golfer — through half of the conference tournaments, birdied 15 and 17 to close out the impressive round.

“I want to just keep shooting better then the round before and keep staying positive,” Castiglia said of staying hot over the next three league tournaments.

Goodman, a member at Bear Creek GC, couldn’t get hot on his home course. The senior finished tied for 2nd on the 4A Jeffco side with a 3-over-par 75. Still, Goodman holds a one-shot advantage over Evergreen senior Bridger Tenney for the race for the 4A Jeffco medalist title.

“It was a long grinding day,” said Goodman, who had three bogeys and no birdies through the first 11 holes.

A string of back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 pulled Goodman close to even-par on the round, but bogeys on 14, 15 and 17 quickly spoiled the rally. However, Goodman’s gamble on the final hole paid off.

Goodman went with driver off the tee to set up a short iron shot into the 391-yard par 4 closing hole. A wonderful second shot set up a birdie putt that Goodman sank to finish his round.

“That was really important to get the drive in play. Obviously a smarter play would be to hit an iron off the tee, but I had to see what I could do and hit a driver in play,” Goodman said. “Making birdie on 18 was huge.”

Valor senior Jake Welch won the 4A Jeffco individual title at Bear Creek GC by a shot over Goodman and Tenney.

“It was really cool. I thought it would get a little darker,” said Tenney about playing golf during the eclipse. “I thought we might not be able to play for a little while, but we were able to play through it.”

Tenney started off with a double-bogey on his opening hole, but played just 1-over-par for the rest of the round.

“I’ll take it. It was a grind-it-out round,” said Tenney, who is second to Goodman in the 4A overall individual standings midway through the league schedule. “I missed some putts and made some putts. This is a really tough golf course. I’ll take it.”

Evergreen and Valor actually tied for the 4A team title at Bear Creek GC. The Cougars are currently just three strokes behind the Eagles for the team crown.

“That’s at the top of the priority list,” Tenney said of winning the 4A Jeffco team title over Valor. “Valor is playing great golf and we are struggling a little bit right now, but we’ll get it back. We are going to have to play some clutch golf down the stretch.”

The 5A team race is also tight. Lakewood, three-time defending 5A Jeffco League champ, holds a two-stroke advantage over Ralston Valley with three conference tournaments left.

LITTLETON — A pair of familiar faces were victorious at the Jeffco League boys golf conference opening tournament Monday at Deer Creek Golf Club.

Lakewood senior Jack Castiglia and Green Mountain senior Gabe Goodman — both three-time state qualifiers — won individual titles.

Castiglia claimed the Class 5A Jeffco individual title with a 3-under-par round of 69. The senior racked up eight birdies on his way to victory. Ralston Valley senior Landon Thunell finished six strokes back of Castiglia to finish second in the individual standings.

Ralston Valley did edge Lakewood by a single stroke to take an early edge over the three-time defending 5A Jeffco League team champions. There are five more Jeffco League tournaments remaining.

Goodman took the 4A Jeffco individual crown with a 2-under-par round of 70. The Rams’ top golfer edged Valor junior Jake Welch and Evergreen senior Bridger Tenney by a single stroke. Welch and Tenney both finished with 1-under-par rounds of 71.

Evergreen did take a six-stroke victory over Valor in the team standings. The Cougars finished with a team best 17-over-par. Tenney was joined by teammates Xan Anderson and Nolan Miller in the top-10 in the individual standings.
