The Season D all-state boys track and field teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.
In order to be considered for athlete of the year, they must first have made the all-state team by winning an event.
Athletes of the year were selected based upon their performance at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected based upon the team champions.

LAKEWOOD – Harrison Witt had already made history this year, so his primary goal on Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium was a win.
With exceptional competition by his side, however, history accompanied victory.
Mountain Vista’s outstanding senior won the Class 5A boys 1,600-meter title at the state meet with a Colorado prep record time of 4 minutes, 4.36 seconds. He topped his own record of 4:05.18 set earlier this year.
Rather than a record, Witt’s main focus was to beat Cherry Creek’s Parker Wolfe, who is also one of the best distance runners in state history. Wolfe finished in 4:10.09, which would have been a 5A state meet record had it not been for Witt’s performance.
“I just set out to go for the win,” Witt said. “I think (the record) comes with it when we both race as hard as we can. Parker is obviously an insane competitor and he took a lot of that race, but the records just come with it when we push ourselves to run hard.”
Wolfe set the pace for the first two laps, with Witt just a few feet behind him. With about 500 meters to go, however, Witt began to sprint and he didn’t stop until he cross the finish line.
“I just wanted to try to hang (with Wolfe) and make it a sprint race, which I think I can handle,” he said. “The last 100 I was like, ‘Just get me to the finish,’ but the first three laps felt very, very strong.”
Witt also set a 5A meet record in the 800 meters (1:48.75) on Friday, putting a cap on his career before going to Princeton.
“It was just a great feeling. It’s very exciting,” he said of his final prep meet. “It’s incredible. A great way to end the season for sure.”

Class 5A
When this season began, Grandview didn’t view itself as the type of team to win a state title. The Wolves showed championship potential throughout the year, however, and on Saturday claimed the first boys team title in program history, 78.5 to 57 over second-place Cherry Creek.
“We’re just a whole bunch of football players that had nothing to do,” said junior Malique Singleton. “We have a whole bunch of kids that just came out for fun and we just started going to meets, started winning and we’re like, ‘Oh we could actually win it.’”
The Wolves did it on the strength of their relays. Singleton helped the Wolves win the 800-meter relay on Friday and finish seventh in the 1,600 relay on Saturday. Grandview added a first-place finish in the 400-meter relay on Saturday (41.96 seconds).
“I think the relays mean more to us because we’re just friends and we’re a team and we can rely on each other and we’re really good at doing that,” Singleton said.
The junior added that the Wolves were inspired by their head coach, John Reyes.
“The other part of it is it just means so much to our head coach, John Reyes,” he said. “He puts all of his time and dedication in it, so for us to see him realize that he’s finally brought a state title here to Grandview, at least for me personally that meant the most.”
With many of the Wolves being underclassmen, they are already looking ahead to 2022.
“We have the depth to go do it again; we just have to work at it and go for it,” Singleton said.
In the sprints, there wasn’t any one runner who was dominant. In fact, the wealth was spread among many on Saturday.
Sterling Brassfield of Eaglecrest won the 100 meters (10.63); D’Andre Barnes of Regis Jesuit won the 200 meters (21.69); and Ky Oday of Cherry Creek won the 400 meters (48.00).
In other 5A finals on Saturday, Gregory Anderson of Far Northeast won the 110 hurdles (14.14); Michael Bennett of Lakewood won the 300 hurdles (37.35); Garrett Searls of Horizon won the pole vault (14-9); Rangeview won the 1,600-meter relay (3:21.51); and Braiden Dishman of Fossil Ridge won the discus (167 feet, 2 inches) to sweep the throws.

Thomas Jefferson senior Avery Shunneson closed his career by sweeping the throws. On Saturday, he won the shot put (54-8) to go with the discus title he won Thursday.
“It’s very exciting. The perfect finish for sure,” he said.
The Princeton-bound Shunneson didn’t get a meet record in the shot, as he did Thursday in the discus, but that didn’t bother him. From the time he finished third in the discus in 2019, he had been aiming to win – and he did it twice this week.
“It means everything,” he said. “It’s been a goal for a long time. Obviously everyone struggled with not being able to compete last year, so to finish both (events) on top feels really good.”
For the second state meet in a row, Niwot came away with the team title, 90-59 over cross-town rival Longmont.
The Cougars were led Saturday by Zane Bergen claiming his third individual title of the weekend, posting a 4A meet record in the 1,600 meters (4:09.51). He won the 800 and 3,200 earlier in the meet.
Frederick’s Ryan Chacon, fully cleared within the last two weeks after a knee injury during basketball season, capped a remarkable comeback by winning the 200 meters (21.96) and leading the Warriors to a win in the 1,600 relay (3:23.78). Both were school records and gave Frederick its first event championships, regardless of gender, since 2006. Chacon was also second in the 400 and fourth in the 100.
Longmont’s Eddie Kurjak capped his weekend with another win, this time in the triple jump (45-5.75). He set a meet record in the high jump on Friday and was also second in the long jump this weekend.
In other 4A finals on Saturday, Brian Rose of Discovery Canyon won the 110 hurdles (14.75); Braylon Fenderson of Riverdale Ridge won the 100 meters (10.96); Justin Blaton of Grand Junction Central won the 400 (47.84); Derek Allen of Widefield won the 300 hurdles (38.73); and Cheyenne Mountain won the 400-meter relay (43.14).

There were times this season that Peak to Peak senior Aidan Graziano didn’t think he could win a state title. He kept chugging along, however, and on Saturday closed his career as the champion in the 110-meter hurdles (15.05 seconds).
“After a season of putting in the work and times where I didn’t feel motivated, you’ve just got to keep putting in that work,” he said. “When it all pays off with a state title, it’s such a great feeling.
“I’ve been wanting a state title for as long as I can remember and here we are.”
The team title came down to the wire, with Resurrection Christian outlasting The Classical Academy, 73-71. The Cougars trailed going into the final event of the day, the 1,600-meter relay, but won that race with a time of 3:24.91, while The Classical Academy was sixth.
Alamosa’s Joshua Medina finished as a three-time champ, winning a thriller in the 1,600 meters and posting a time of 4:20.47. He also won the 800 and 3,200 this weekend.
Other champions on Saturday included Logan Hafey of Moffat County in the 300 hurdles (39.26); Brayden Savage of Frontier Academy in the 100 meters (10.81); Drew Morton of The Classical Academy in the 400 meters (50.01); Devyn Lauer of Platte Valley in the 200 (21.94); Woodland Park’s Sonny Ciccarelli in the high jump (6-8); and Lutheran in the 400-meter relay (42.90).

Earlier this season, Yuma junior Clay Robinson posted a time of 22.16 seconds in the 200 meters that would have been good enough to beat the 2A state meet record – except it wasn’t in the state meet.
On Saturday, he thought he finally got the mark, winning the state title in 22.17. The record is 22.23 by Mike Carl in 2009.
“It’s awesome,” Robinson said. “I broke it earlier in the season, but they told me I had to wait for the state event, so I waited and I got it and I’m pretty pleased with that.”

(Brad Cochi/CHSAANow)
Unfortunately for Robinson, it was later determined his time was wind-aided, so Carl will keep the record, but Robinson is still a champion, in many ways. He also won the 100 meters (11.87) and helped Yuma to the team title, 76 to 48.5 over second-place Lake County.
“It was awesome,” he said of his individual titles. “I came out and I just wanted the win and did whatever it took to win. I’m happy.”
Robinson was also third in long jump and was pleased to see Yuma win for the first time since its only other team title in 1996.
“We haven’t won a team title in like 25 years,” he said. “That would be something special for Yuma. Our boys team is pretty legit and we’re fast and we kept it and we want this title.”
Crested Butte’s Connor Williams is going home a two-time champ, as well. On Saturday, he won the 1,600 meters in 4:19.99. He won the 800 on Friday.
Centauri’s Mason Claunch won the 400 meters (49.70) and helped his team to a win in the 400 relay (44.62). He also helped them win the 800 relay on Friday.
In other Saturday finals: Lake County’s Anthony Martinez won the 110 hurdles (15.44); Blaine Pebbles of Hotchkiss won the 300 hurdles (40.04); Nathan Freeman of Dayspring Christian won the long jump (20-11.5); Nate Early of Banning Lewis won the high jump (6-1); and Ouray won the 1,600-meter relay (3:30.88).

Class 1A

Sophomore Jacob Jefferson of Arrickaree/Woodlin had a sensational first career state meet, claiming a pair of state titles on Saturday. He won the 110 hurdles in 16.24 seconds and the 400 meters in 52.49 seconds.
In his first high school track season, Jefferson said his main goals were to get a couple school records and, “That’s what I did today.”
One of them had particularly special meaning.
“I got the 400 and the 110s, which is a really big deal to my family because my family has run the 110s since, I think, my mom,” he said.
In fact, his older brother, Joseph, held the school record before Jacob broke it on Saturday.
Heritage Christian cruised to the team title, 141 to 79.5 over DeBeque, and the Eagles did so on the strength of its depth, as they did not win any event titles on Saturday.
DeBeque, meanwhile, won several titles on the final day of the meet. The Dragons were led by senior Wesley Ryan, who won the 100 meters in 11.52 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches. Junior Trevor Lewis also won a title for the Dragons, taking the 1,600 meters in 4:36.14.
Lone Star senior Brady Kuntz closed his career with a 1A meet record in the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet, 6.5 inches.
Other champions on Saturday included Josh Duran of Antonito in the 300 hurdles (41.29); Haxtun in the 400 relay (46.20); and Cade Mitchek of Cheyenne Wells in the 200 meters (23.10), and helping the Tigers to a win in the 1,600-meter relay (3:40.25).

COLORADO SPRINGS — Steve Collier would’ve loved the weather on May 27, 2021. It was perfect baseball weather.
That was evidenced by Widefield and Palmer both having a little jump in their step as they took the field at the Widefield Community Center field, getting ready to play a Colorado Springs Metro South League game. They were also saying their own goodbye to Collier.
The longtime area coach and his two sons, Josh and Mason, were tragically killed last October in an automobile accident on I-25. They were making the southward trip to Arlington, Texas to attend the World Series. They were a baseball family and they wanted to watch the pinnacle of baseball games of America.
Their deaths sent shockwaves through the local baseball scene. Collier loved the game and more importantly, loved teaching kids how to play the game. If there is a better physical example of what a high school baseball coach is supposed be, it wouldn’t be easy to find.
“When he left Palmer he called me and told me he thought I was perfect for the job,” Palmer coach David Mills said. “We talked about the program and doing things for kids. Coaching the right way. That’s what he was all about.”
Collier left Palmer and eventually wound up as an assistant at Widefield. When the two teams met on Thursday, they knew they had to bond together and pay tribute to man who meant a lot to both programs. A man who meant a lot to Colorado Springs baseball and Colorado Springs kids.

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)
His wife, Becky, and his daughter, Emily, threw out the first pitches of the games and were honored his jersey prior to the start of the game. The loss of Collier and the boys will always be felt, but there was no hiding the pride and happiness that came with knowing just how much they were appreciated by the baseball community.
“The loss was huge and my daughter and I deal with that every day,” Beck said. “But the celebrations are things that remind us that they were fantastic people.”
And just like it has been through so many aspects of life, baseball has been a tool to help heal and push forward. Collier himself liked teaching life lessons through baseball. He thought it was an applicable way to teach kids about life and the proper way to go about it.
“It’s always there,” Becky said. “There are a lot of life lessons to learned out here. Baseball is, as my husband would say, a thinking man’s game. There is a lot of downtime to do some thinking about different decisions that have been made in the game. You can always count on (the game). You can always count on your bat, ball and glove to be there and to be played with.”
The Widefield players had to figure that out. For them, everything from March to October felt like an inning had completely broken down. After the cancellation of the 2020 season because of COVID-19, they were anxious for their next opportunity to get on the field.
Then the accident happened and just made a bad year all that much worse. But they had to find a way to pick up the bat, ball and glove and play.
“We had to remember to play together as a team,” senior Tyler Becker said. “Teamwork is what helps us stick together right now and he was the one always preaching that.”
This group of kids will always have his words to live and play the game by. Together, they strapped on black bands with Collier’s initials on them and took the time to remember just how much he meant to them and high school baseball throughout the area.
“They loved playing for him,” Widefield coach John Sanchez said. “I loved having him here. I had known him for nine years, we actually worked together. It’s a little more than just baseball.”
But make no mistake, Collier loved baseball. He would’ve loved seeing Widefield, the last team he donned a uniform for, get a 6-3 win over Palmer. It was the first win of the season for the Gladiators.
On the day they honored a coach that meant so much to both teams taking the field, the Gladiators could think of no better way to celebrate him.
They played ball.

The 2020 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.
Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.
CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.
Because there will be two football seasons during the 2020-21 school year, this is the all-state football team for Season A. There will be a separate all-state football team released for Season C.

Up 17-7 at halftime, Holy Family really used a big second half to expand the lead en route to a top-10 win over Lutheran on Friday.
The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, beat No. 2 Lutheran 38-14.
“It was a great win for our kids,” Holy Family coach Michael Gabriel told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “Our kids have really looked forward to this opportunity, to play a big game, this year. And they did a great job tonight.
Holy Family’s Trevin Johnson scored two first-quarter touchdowns to put his team up 14-0 after the first quarter.
“A key for us was just trying to get them off the field. Our kids did that. … We got a quick couple of scores.
Defensively, he said, “We have great team speed on that side of the ball, and those kids really like to hit. I think we set the tone early, and kept it on for the whole game.
After a field goal, Lutheran cut the lead to 17-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Michael White threw two touchdowns for Holy Family, one to Oscar Sena, and another to Liam Gray, to make it 31-7.
Lutheran cut into the lead, making it 31-14 after three quarters, but White added a rushing score for Holy Family in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

2A: (10) Moffat County 26, (2) Delta 20
Caleb Frink and Evan Atkin each had two rushing touchdowns as Moffat County pulled off the big upset at home.
“We feel like we’ve been getting better every week, and this win tonight definitely makes us feel like we’ve taken a step in the right direction,” Moffat County coach Lance Scranton told the Scoreboard Show.
Frink got his team started with a first-quarter rushing score that put the Bulldogs up 6-0.
Delta responded on its next drive, capped by a touchdown pass to Hunter Goff, as they went ahead 7-6.
Moffat County retook the lead at 13-7 just before the end of the first quarter when Frink scored his second, this from from 25 yards out.
After Delta tied the game at 13 in the second quarter, Moffat County’s Evan Atkin put his team ahead 19-13 just two seconds before halftime.
In the second half, Moffat County recovered a fumble in Delta territory, and then Atkin punched it in for his second score for a 26-13 lead.
“Then, we just had to play defense, and our defense really came through,” Scranton said.
Delta’s Colbi Braslin hauled in a touchdown pass with 5:53 left, and the Panthers then got the ball back with less than a minute to go, but Moffat County’s Logan Hafey got a sack with two seconds left to secure the upset.
“That sealed the game, and that was it,” Scranton said.

5A: (2) Valor Christian 45, (8) Ralston Valley 7
In a game that was scheduled mid-week due to quarantines of opponents, Valor Christian built at 24-0 lead at halftime, and kept things rolling in the second half en route to the win.
Star Eagles running back Gavin Sawchuk rushed for two touchdowns, including scores of 69 and 27 yards, as he amassed 230 yards on 33 carries.
Valor Christian quarterback Sean McNair threw two touchdown passes, both of which went to Landon Turnall. Zach Wiley also had a rushing score.
Zach Friedman had Ralston Valley’s lone touchdown, a 7-yard rush in the third quarter.

2A: (5) Eaton 51, (8) Severance 6
Eaton turned a fast start into a big top-10 win.
The squad led 23-0 after the first quarter, and 44-0 at the half.

8-man: (1) Sedgwick County 32, (3) Merino 0
Sedgwick County pushed an 8-0 lead to 24-0 in the span of a few minutes late in the second quarter to beat their rivals on Friday night.
“That was big for us, especially that last score, going down and getting in the end zone right before halftime,” Sedgwick County coach Chris Michel told the Scoreboard Show. “I think anytime you can do that, it takes the wind out of them a little bit, and gives us a little more cushion.”
Of the top-3 matchup, Michel said, “We had to put four quarters together. That’s exactly what we need this time of season, to get ready to go in the playoffs.”
It was the second shutout Sedgwick County’s defense threw this season.
“We did a good job of staying home, doing our job, and really tackling,” Michel said.

8-man: (9) Dove Creek 18, (5) Mancos 14
Dove Creek’s Kade Hankins scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to help Dove Creek rally and pull off the upset.

Notables:
- It has been a wild week of cancellations and reschedules due to COVID-19. At least 37 games have been changed or cancelled just this week alone. There was also a forfeit, which was unrelated to COVID.
- One of those rescheduled games saw coach Todd Casbier return to play his former school at Fruita Monument, with Casebier’s Castle View squad winning 28-15.
- Cheraw quarterback Cade Phillips continued his tear in 6-man, throwing for seven touchdowns in the second consecutive game as the seventh-ranked Wolverines beat Manzanola 82-38. The 14 touchdowns over two games rank fourth-all time (and are a 6-man record). He has also thrown 18 touchdowns in the past three games, which is the seventh most (and another 6-man record).
- No. 2 Fowler built a 20-8 lead in the second half, then held off a rally from No. 7 Crowley County in 8-man to win 32-22.
- Cherokee Trail knocked off 5A No. 9 Grandview 28-23 to pick up its third-straight win. The Cougars’ Kyle Williams had a late INT to seal the win. Find photos from the game here.
- In overtime, Cheyenne Mountain beat Widefield 13-12.
- In 3A, Evergreen ran away from No. 9 Green Mountain, 48-7. Photos from the game are available here.
- 1A No. 6 Hotchkiss ended Gunnison’s two-game winning streak with a 49-7 win. Five different Bulldogs had a rushing touchdown, including quarterback Drayden Taylor, who also threw for two scores.
- Quarterback Chase Silva threw two touchdown and ran for two more as 4A No. 8 Skyline improved to 5-0 with a 35-21 win over Monarch.
- 5A No. 6 Fairview is now 5-0 after its 42-10 win over Horizon. Liam O’Brien threw for 310 yards and three scores, and also had two rushing touchdowns to go along with 45 yards on the ground.
- Quite the stat line from Bennett quarterback Mikey Babi: He was 6-of-8 with 154 yards and four scores in his team’s 44-0 win over Platte Canyon in 1A.
- In 8-man, Simla got three rushing touchdowns from Coletin Mazerall as the Cubs beat Lyons 38-8.

Third time’s a charm for the Liberty Lancers. The Lancers scored a pair of touchdowns to rally to a 17-7 win over Widefield in a rare Tuesday afternoon showdown.
Stalled offensive drives were the norm early as neither Liberty (1-2 overall) or the Gladiators (0-1) could put up points in the first quarter.
It was the Lancers finally breaking the scoreless tie with a field goal to go up 3-0 with about three minutes left in the first half. But the lead didn’t last long. DJ Allen returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, giving Widefield a 7-3 lead.
With urgency at play, the Lancers finally found mojo on offense. Aidan Swanson found Luiz Alamo for a long touchdown pass giving them a 10-7 lead at halftime.
The defense clamped down for the remainder of the game and didn’t allow Widefield to score another point the rest of the game. The Lancers put the game away with a touchdown run with 1:06 left in the game and got to enjoy their brief ride of I-25 with their first win of the season.

Berthoud 22, Brush 21 (2OT)
Regulation wasn’t enough to settle a tight battle between Berthoud and Brush in the other Tuesday afternoon game.
The Beetdiggers took an early 7-0 thanks to a blocked punt. The Spartans answered right back with a touchdown run and added a 2-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead.
Brush regained momentum before the end of the first quarter, punching in a touchdown run. The 14-8 lead held to halftime and it was the Berthoud defense that would make an impact play later on.
A fumble recovery in the third quarter led to Berthoud’s second offensive touchdown of the game. The 2-point conversion failed and the game went into the fourth quarter locked in a 14-14 tie.
Neither team found paydirt in the fourth quarter forcing the game into overtime.
Brush came up big defensively with an interception setting up a chance to walk away with a big win. The field goal attempt was blocked and the game was extended much to the delight of the home team.
Getting the ball to start the second overtime, Brush found the end zone and kicked the extra point to go up 21-14.
Berthoud answered right back and like it had all day, opted for a 2-point conversion attempt rather than the extra point. The two-yard rushing attempt was successful and Berthoud improved to 2-0 on the season.
