A Colorado high school team title in cross country can often be won with depth, but this year’s Class 3A girls race was an example of that strategy in the extreme.

Rock Canyon took down Mountain Vista for the school’s first-ever state cross country county title. In the final team standings, only nine points separated Rock Canyon from their next-door rivals.

Addison Ritzenhein shattered a record during the Colorado cross country state championships at Norris Penrose Event Center on Saturday.

Every year, there are two first-place trophies – team and individual – available in each Colorado high school cross country state championship race.

Last year, the rise of classification newcomer Air Academy caught most of the 5A crowd off-guard. This year, however, there not so much as a hint of the element of surprise. Despite being a marked team all season long, the state meet result was otherwise much the same as last year.

COLORADO SPRINGS – Despite being one of the favorites to challenge for the Class 2A boys title, Colorado Springs Christian junior Andrew Bel entered Saturday’s state championships with a shockingly low number of wins in his high school career.
