AURORA – Three years ago, James Story was just starting to hit his swimming stride when he reported for duty as a freshman to the Silver Creek boys swimming team.

Chris Loftis is a swim coach, so he knows the feeling of getting wet. But it had been three years since he jumped into the pool for the celebration of winning a state championship.

The 4A and 5A Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships are in the book, following three days of marvelous performances at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. Silver Creek and Cherry Creek have been crowned overall team champions for the state meet.

Somehow, Cherry Creek’s Luke Ogren has only gotten better since winning last year’s diving state championship. This time around, he improved upon last year’s score to earn another crown and aid the Bruins’ pursuit of the program’s first boys swimming and diving team state championship since 2021, and its 13th overall.

In both 2022 and 2023, Silver Creek came painfully close to winning another boys swimming state championship, but was forced to settle for the title of runner up, as it watched Cheyenne Mountain hoist the title. This season, The Raptors finally got over the hump.

There’s no new Class 4A diving champion this year.

The finalized state qualifiers and finalized heat sheets for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 2024 boys swim and dive state championships have been released, and across the two classifications there are 13 champions from last year looking to repeat in nine different events. Of the 13 returning champions, two — Windsor senior Jake Eccleston and Cherry Creek senior Brodie Johnson — are looking to again capture titles in multiple events.
