  • Alamosa boys cross country in prime position in 3A

Alamosa High School, nestled in the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, is in a prime distance running location.

Alamosa is home to the most successful Division II running program in the country, Adams State, and is fertile training ground at 7,500 feet. The area also has several strong running programs at the high school level. The Mean Moose are one of them.

Alamosa is led by legendary coach Larry Zaragoza, an Adams State alum who ran and learned under one of the best distance running coaches in American history, Joe Vigil.

Zaragoza, entering his 38th season at the school, also coached at Centauri in the 1970s. He is the only cross country coach in Colorado history to claim both boys and girls team state titles at two different schools. Zaragoza has won several championships over the years, but says his program’s focus isn’t solely on the end results each season.

“We don’t chase trophies,” Zaragoza said. “That’s one thing that’s convinced in my mind. I’m not going to try and inform a team to just try and go out and chase a trophy. I don’t want disappointment; I want enjoyment, no matter what happens at the end of the season.

"I want them to appreciate it and reflect on all the hard work that’s brought them to this point, no matter where it brings us. Be proud of your efforts and be proud of your achievements.”

Zaragoza’s boys team had another season to be proud of in 2013 with a third place finish at the 3A cross country state championships despite not having a single senior in the state lineup. The Alamosa boys have placed in the top four each of the past four seasons at the state championships and look to be one of the state title favorites in 2014, but Zaragoza never takes anything for granted.

“We’re in a tough region,” the long-time Alamosa coach said of 3A Region 2, arguably the most challenging boys region in the classification. “Vanguard School just moved up and Lamar’s back with a solid team.

"One of our goals is to increase the mileage in a smart way and keep people healthy, because we do have a fine group of young men and they’re going to be competing in some really good meets throughout the season. We do have quality, but we don’t have a lot of depth. We have six pretty outstanding runners and after that, it kind of drops off, not drastically, but compared to what our front-runners have, it would drop off a little bit.”

Alamosa, like most small schools, may struggle for depth, but their top-flight talent is excellent.

Isaiah De La Cerda is one of the best talents in Colorado for his age. He placed seventh at state cross country as a freshman last season and ran a 10:03 3,200-meters at the 3A state track championships, good for ninth place.

De La Cerda is talented enough to challenge for an individual state title this fall. The sophomore is the son of Peter, a second place finisher at the 2000 Olympic trials in the marathon, and Ronda De La Cerda. Both of Isaiah’s parents were standouts at Adams State. Peter has been an assistant coach at Alamosa for several years.

“It’s a blessing to have Peter on the program,” Zaragoza said. “He occasionally runs with the team. He takes the A group and he’ll run with them on their long runs. He likes to get out and do the hill workouts with them. I think that’s a plus having a coach like Peter, especially for his son Isaiah, because Isaiah is quite a talented young man.

"He seems to be mature beyond his years," Zaragoza added. "He seems so composed at meets. Again, he’s one of those who has no fear. He’s not afraid of anybody. He respects, along with our team and coaching staff — we respect our opponents, but we fear no one. We want to compete and we want to compete against the best.

"Isaiah’s always visiting with top runners. Last year, he would go speak with Bailey Roth out of Coronado High School and the young man that ran for Denver East (Cerake Geberkidane). Isaiah likes to be a student of the game.”

Jericho Ulibarri, a senior, could be nipping at De La Cerda’s heels again this fall. Ulibarri finished one second behind De La Cerda at last year’s state cross country meet in a strong eighth place effort.

Miguel Baltazar was the second-fastest freshman in the classification last year, placing 22nd at the state meet, and Chance Canty, Caleb Palmer, and Austin Chavez are fine runners in their own right.

Alamosa certainly has a talented team returning. The Mean Moose are still youthful, but certainly have a fine example of running success in their own backyard.

“Our kids do get to rub elbows every now and then,” Zaragoza said of sharing the town with Adams State. “For example, there’s a meet that they host here called the Joe I. Vigil. It’s a middle school race, a high school race, and then a collegiate race. Our kids know who the Adams State athletes are, whether they are male or female. I have had over the past years, the head coach Damon Martin come and speak to our team and share some knowledge and some motivational thoughts.

“They’re aware of Adams State’s success and I think them being from Alamosa, they want to be equally representative of the running community.”

Alamosa is expected to be one of the state champion favorites along with Lamar, a region rival and second place finisher in 2013.

Frontier Academy, the defending state champions, graduated its top three boys, but have a strong enough program to put them in the team race again.

Salida’s Taylor Stock, the top 3A returner after a second-place finish as a sophomore, is expected to battle Basalt’s Zach Walsh, Alamosa’s De La Cerda and Ulibarri, and Lamar’s Jake Rogers for the individual crown.

There is one guarantee about the upcoming boys cross country season: there will be a new Class 4A state team champion.

That’s became a reality when last year’s state champ Broomfield moved up to 5A this season.

Although the Eagles are gone, there’s no shortage of talented 4A teams in 2014 — led by The Classical Academy.

The Colorado Springs-based school was the state runner-up last year, but veteran coach Alan Versaw knows nothing will come easy for his squad.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Versaw said. “There are plenty of good teams. Palmer Ridge, at least on paper, is probably the best team. They lost very little to graduation and they had a pretty strong team last year and all indicators are that they are going to be really good. I also think Thompson Valley, Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain and Durango are going to be very good.”

The Titans won five Class 3A boys cross country titles, but have yet to win any in 4A since moving up to that class in 2012.

Versaw expects his team to be led by senior Everett Johnson, junior Michael Oldach and sophomore Tanner Norman.

“We are very established and very experienced three-deep, but in cross country you have to go to five,” Versaw said. “We will see what happens with (No.) 4 and 5 and that will probably tell a big deal of the story of our season right there.

    (Courtesy of Alan Versaw)
Michael Oldach. (Courtesy of Alan Versaw)

"We have one freshman coming in who could be an impact freshman and we will wait because I’m not sure on that," he added. "Then, we have probably five or six guys who ran mostly JV last year and were freshmen and sophomores and they will have a shot at filling those positions. We have lots of possibilities.”

That’s why Versaw uses the regular season to mold his team.

“I don’t load up with big meets,” Versaw said. “There are a couple of times during the season we will try and go pretty hard, but the invitational season is more about learning than winning meets.”

The state meet returns to the Norris-Penrose Event Center which Versaw knows is a challenge.

“It’s kind of a roll the dice kind of course where there is very little margin for error on that course the way it is setup,” Versaw said.

  • Pine Creek’s Zachary Alhamra has high hopes in 5A boys cross country

Pine Creek’s Zachary Alhamra, a talent since he entered high school, feels he hadn’t discovered his potential yet.

“I came into high school as the dominant Colorado runner for the freshman class and no other freshman could touch me,” Alhamra said. “Towards the end of my freshman year, I kind of had a plateau and that plateau continued into my sophomore year and the entire year I only improved a few seconds in each of my events.”

“I went into last season a little apprehensive,” Alhamra admitted of his mindset entering his junior cross country season, a year after placing 12th at the Class 5A state meet as a sophomore.

After surprising himself a little with a third-place finish at a loaded Arapahoe Warrior Invite to kick off his junior campaign, Alhamra could see the opportunity for a breakout season.

    (Courtesy photo)
Alharma says he is drawing inspiration from Cerake Geberkidane, last year’s 5A champion from Denver East. (Courtesy photo)

“I told myself, why not take first and do some incredible things this season,” Alhamra said. “Next race I took second to Cerake (Geberkidane) in my division and just kept the ball rolling from there.

"At Liberty Bell, I took first with a significant PR of 15 seconds. Rim Rock, which is in Kansas, I had a very good race and took third. From then on I just decided I’m going to take second place to Cerake at the 5A state meet.”

Alhamra was enjoying his best season yet, but had a mental barrier to overcome the week before the state championships.

“Where it really got interesting was the week before at the regional meet,” Alhamra said. “The weekend before the meet, I got sick, and it almost seemed like déjà vu. My freshman year, I got sick the same exact weekend and I ended up collapsing a hundred meters from the finish line at the regional meet and didn’t qualify for state.

"This was my first time ever returning to the course since that event occurred. I was sick and wasn’t feeling the greatest about it and even during the race, I remember I wasn’t feeling too good physically, but I just stayed behind Connor Weaver (of Mountain Vista).

“Last half mile, I decided to sprint him out there instead of waiting until it got too close to the finish,” Alhamra noted. “I basically just ended the race by taking a big surge and creating a gap between us. I ended up winning the race and then going into state, I recovered from my cold.”

Alhamra put the icing on the cake of a wildly successful fall by accomplishing his goal of placing second at the 5A state meet behind one of the best runners in state history, Denver East’s Geberkidane, an Oklahoma State signee. Alhamra went on to qualify for the Nike National Championships and placed 20th, second out of Colorado runners behind fourth-place Geberkidane.

The Pine Creek senior, the leading returner in 5A boys cross country, has high hopes for his last high school season. He is drawing inspiration from last year’s state champion.

Alhamra, a young man who comes across as confident but not arrogant, said, “Cerake was kind of like that beacon out in the distance that I would like to be chasing after. Even though he’s graduated, my main competitor, as far as what I’m focusing on this year, is his times from last year. I want to see if I can match or break his times.

“The state meet, obviously I want to be dominant and take first,” Alhamra added of his goals. “I would like to go undefeated in Colorado and I would like to return to Nike Nationals and qualify for Foot Locker Nationals, as well.”

Alhamra, boasting a 4.76 GPA, has been hearing from several Ivy League schools, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Texas at Austin. He’s also received some interest from his dream school, Stanford.

Alhamra said he’s looking for the best combination of academics and running at the next level but for now he’s focused on continuing to tap into his potential at Pine Creek.

“I just had an every race was better than the last type of season,” Alhamra said of his junior cross country campaign.

Alhamra appears to be the state title favorite, but will have competition from a deep group of talent including the likes of Thornton’s Joshua Joseph, Smoky Hill’s Blake Yount, Rampart’s Ben Dingman and Chaparral’s Dom Compoz, all top-10 finishers at the 2013 state meet.

Mountain Vista has claimed the team crown the last two years, but lost a great senior class with front-runners Connor Weaver and Andrew Walton departed.

The strength of the Golden Eagles’ young talent should put them right in the thick of it again. Chaparral, Fort Collins, Arapahoe and Monarch look poised to contend.

  • Jewelry ban also lifted for fall cross country season

AURORA — Cross country athletes will be allowed to wear jewelry during meets this fall after CHSAA lifted a ban on Monday.

The move comes in anticipation of a NFHS decision to remove a ban on jewelry in track and field starting with the spring 2015 season.

That national jewelry allowance will extended to cross country in the fall 2015 season, but CHSAA decided to allow jewelry this season. Previously, runners weren’t allowed to wear jewelry during meets.

“As a state, we decided that we will go ahead and proceed with it this fall in preparation for the rule change next year,” said Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, the CHSAA assistant commissioner in charge of cross country. “The big reason is that we’re going to do it in track. We know it’s coming down. This way, it’s in the same school year as the rule change for track.”

There are no restrictions as to the jewelry that can be worn.

“We spent time this weekend talking (with coaches) about ‘common sense,’ but no, there’s no restriction,” Roberts-Uhlig said.

  • Notebook: Cross country staying at Norris Penrose, volleyball changes schedule

    State cross country

The state cross country meets are set to remain at the Norris Penrose Event Center for the next two years

It means the event will state at the same place it has been held for the past two seasons, pending approval by CHSAA’s board of directors.

“That community has put a lot of effort into making the event and venue shine,” said assistant commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, who oversees cross country. “They go above and beyond to make it an amazing experience for kids across the state.”

Three additional sites — in Jefferson County, Greeley and Lyons — are being considered to host the meet in the future.

“We believe that the commitment that Norris Penrose has made to the state cross country meet justifies our decision to keep it there for two more years,” Roberts-Uhlig said. “In the meantime, we have three proposals that have come in that we will be evaluating over the next 12 months.

“As we continue to review the proposals, we are confident that our decision to remain at Norris Penrose will give us the time to make the best decision for cross country students across Colorado.”

    Volleyball schedule changes

The volleyball committee is looking to change the schedule at their state tournament. Pending legislative council approval, pool play would feature the top seed in each pool playing twice on Friday.

Under the current format, the top seed in each pool has one pool play match on Friday and one on Saturday. If that team advances, it means three matches on Saturday, including the semifinals and final.

With the change, the top seed (Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4) in each pool would finish their pool play matches on Friday and, if they advance, get the advantage of resting prior to the semifinals on Saturday.

“We are really excited for this change in the match order,” said assistant commissioner Bethany Brookens, who heads volleyball. “We are hoping for more competitive semifinals and finals matches on Saturday evening.”

The volleyball committee did discuss moving to a 32-team bracket. That would have meant overhauling the entire state format — getting rid of regionals and the four three-team pools at state. Ultimately, though, that proposal was defeated. So the current state format will remain in place, save for the scheduling tweak noted above.

The changes, if approved by the legislative council at a meeting on Jan. 30, would take effect in 2014.

    Baseball tweaks Wild Card points

In an effort to ensure its Wild Card points formula is even more accurate, the baseball committee made some small changes during its meeting this week. If the legislative council approves the changes, it will mean teams will get fewer points for a loss, and will also change the way out-of-state teams are handled.

The wild card formula adds victory points and defeat points, then divides that total by the number of games a team plays. Teams get a certain number of points for beating another team (victory points), or for losing to another team (defeat points). Those points are determined by the number of wins an opponent has. For example, a win over a 5A team with 14 wins is worth 135 points. A loss to that same team is worth 110 points.

The committee is seeking to reduce defeat points across the board by five points in classes 5A, 4A and 3A. Thus, the loss to that 5A team would instead be worth 105 points.

“This will help tweak the Wild Card points to get a more true view of strength of schedule,” said assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann, who is in charge of baseball. “It became apparent at midseason (last year) that we needed adjustments to the process to create a more equitable power point formula.”

Another change the committee made with that goal is mind is to out-of-state opponents. CHSAA schools play a maximum of 19 games during the regular season. However, many other states play more than 19 games. With that, the formula last season only accounted for an out-of-state opponent’s first 19 games.

The committee is seeking to change that by having a team’s win percentage be factored in. A team’s win percentage would be multiplied by 19 to determine the number of “wins” a team is worth in the Wild Card point formula.

For example, if a team in Arizona finishes 22-18, but started the season by going 14-5 in its first 19 games, that team would have counted for 14 wins last season. Under the change, that team would be worth 10 “wins.” (Their .550 win percentage would be multiplied by 19, resulting in a figure of 10.45. Figures are rounded accordingly.)

Again, these changes need to be approved at January’s legislative council meeting.

    Postseason changes in softball

    State softball
    (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Pending approval by the legislative council, there will be some changes to softball’s postseason.

The softball committee is recommending a decrease in the total number of teams reaching the Class 3A postseason. Currently, there are 24 qualifiers and 33 teams playing in the classification. The committee is recommending going down to 18 qualifiers in 3A.

Classes 5A (32 of 62) and 4A (32 of 67)  have close to 50 percent of their teams make the postseason.

“They realized the percentage of qualifiers (in 3A) versus the number of teams that played in it was not the same percentage as 4A/5A,” said assistant commissioner Bud Ozzello, who oversees softball. “Eighteen out of 33 is closer to everyone else’s percentage.”

Additionally, the committee is proposing a reduction to the percentage of automatic postseason qualifiers from leagues in 4A and 5A. As things are now, roughly the top 40 percent of each league qualifies for regionals; they voted to recommend cutting that to 30 percent.

In 4A, that would mean 19 automatic berths going forward, and 13 at-large selections. In 5A, it means 18 automatics and 14 at-large berths.

  • Roberts siblings, Lyons dominate 2A cross country races

COLORADO SPRINGS — Before each race, Lyons runner Miriam Roberts writes a quote on her arm in black sharpie.

Today, at the Class 2A girls cross country state meet, Roberts chose the same inspiration she penned from her first race of this season: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”: Hebrews 12:1.

Roberts took first place at the meet at Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs with a time of 19:44.

“It was my teammates and coaches who pushed me to be the best I can be,” Roberts said.

Lyons’ coaches challenged their runners to perform in the most important race of the year.

“My coaches told us were going to go out and run the best race we have ever run,” said Roberts. “They have pushed us all year long and this was the goal to run as fast as possible.”

The most challenging section of the course was between the first and second mile markers where the runners have to surmount a large hill. The hill can make or break a race.

“I took the lead on the uphill,” Roberts said. “My goal was to go out more relaxed, and then go harder on the downhill. You don’t want to go crazy on the uphill and kill yourself.”

Hotchkiss took the team honors at the state championships for the second year in row. They finished three runners within the top 10. Natalie Anderson, Jennifer Celis and Mae Anderson combined to take home the state title.

The 2A boys took the course later in the morning. Roberts’ brother, Paul, set a course record 16:19 en route to earning his own, and Lyons’, second-consecutive state title.

The Lyons community was devastated this past summer from the flooding in Colorado. However, the flooding didn’t hinder the team’s dominance.

“We are really a family right now,” Paul Roberts said. “We’ve been working our butts off together this summer. Even after the flood, we all got together and take care of business. When it’s time for races, we give it our all and put our best out there.”

The sophomore faced a different challenge this year at state.

“If you start overthinking a little bit, you need to relax,” he said. “In last year’s race, I knew I had to just get out there. There were some really good kids out there.”

Marcel and Joel Such, of Lyons, rounded out the top-three runners overall — the exact same finish from last year’s state meet.

“We all run for our teammate and families,” Marcel Such said. “Our coaches put all of our training together. Coach Roberts also puts life into perspective.”

Marcel Such, a senior, finished eight seconds behind Paul and 24 seconds ahead of Joel Such. With only three runners that score in 2A, Lyons knew they won the team championship as soon as Joel finished the finish line.

“I got out really good today,” said Marcel. “I got out leading the pack. … I was in second at the top of the hill and chased Paul. I beat him in a (race) last year and knew I had it in me, but Paul is such an incredible runner. I’m so blessed to have him — he’s like a brother.”

  • Geberkidane nabs course record, 5A cross country title

COLORADO SPRINGS — It was one year ago that Denver East was celebrating its first state cross country champion after Ashi Geberkidane brought home the title in the Class 5A state meet.

The moment was bittersweet for younger brother Cerake Geberkidane, who had hoped to finish right behind Ashi but took third overall. On Saturday at Norris Penrose Event Center, Cerake did that goal one better.

The Angels senior set a course record with a time of 15 minutes, 48.2 seconds in dominating the 5A state boys meet. Geberkidane crossed the finish line nearly 41 seconds before second-place Zachary Alhamra of Pine Creek to earn a title of his own.

“I came back to redeem myself. I really wanted to get first and second (in 2012) but I didn’t,” Cerake said. “I trained really hard and really wanted to win it to continue it on in the family.”

Ashi Geberkidane is currently a freshman at Harvard and Cerake joked his brother was probably doing homework, but he was looking forward to making a phone call to him later.

The Mountain Vista boys, led by senior Connor Weaver’s third-place finish and four runners in the top 26, defended its 5A boys team title with 110 points. Fort Collins was second with 179.

“It’s different because all year we were talking about how there was a big target on their back and they knew it coming in,” Mountain Vista coach Jonathan Dalby said. “In years past we’ve been chasing that target on other teams, especially teams like Fort Collins.

“I told them they needed to race not like they were going out there just to defend a state title but like they were getting out to try and win it.”

Thornton’s Joshua Johnson and Sean Paiz rounded out the top five individuals.

In the 5A girls meet, Fort Collins freshman Lauren Gregory earned the top spot by 22 seconds, finishing in 18:36.9. Boulder’s Erin McLaughlin was second, followed by Grandview’s Erin Norton, Fairview’s Maya Browning and Monarch’s Ashley Litoff.

The state’s biggest stage didn’t faze Gregory, who said she wasn’t any more nervous than usual.

“It was just race nerves,” Gregory said. “I didn’t have any expectations or real pressure to do anything. I just felt like ‘let’s go do what I want to do.’”

Monarch clinched its third consecutive state championship as three Coyotes finished in the top eight. Litoff, Claire Green (seventh) and Kaitlyn Benner (8th) stuck together throughout the course and helped Monarch hold off Fort Collins for the third year in a row.

“That was the plan, to try to stick as close as we could to each other,” Litoff said. “At the end, when we got it, it was just really satisfying.”

Monarch had six runners place in the top 27 and finished with 49 points.

  • Niwot’s Cranny shatters meet mark in taking 4A cross country crown

COLORADO SPRINGS — Elise Cranny lived up to the hype.

The Niwot High School senior is considered one of the nation’s top runners and showed why Saturday at the Norris Penrose Events Center.

The senior set a course record with an 18.07.8 time to win her second consecutive Class 4A girls state cross country championship.

“This was my last state cross country meet and I wanted to enjoy it,” Cranny said. “The hill was much harder than I remembered. I wanted to run faster and break 18 (minutes), but this is fine.”

Cranny did shatter the previous 3.2-mile course record at the Norris Penrose Events Center. The old mark was 18:16.5 set by Pine Creek’s Heather Bates last year.

“This was exciting,” Cranny said. “I had to just keep going hard.”

For the second year in a row, Katie Ransberger took second to Cranny. The sophomore came in at 18:47.4 on Saturday.

“It felt great,” Ransberger said. “Elise is one of the top runners in the nation and she pulled off an amazing race. I can’t be sad about coming in second to her. She is a phenomenal runner.”

This was Cranny’s fifth state title as she has won the 800, mile and two-mile crowns in track.

In the girls 4A team race, Thompson Valley won the team title with 135 points.

“This feels really awesome,” said Thompson Valley coach Matt Norton said. “We felt like coming into the season we had a team that could pull something like this off. We kind of had a roller-coaster season, but they ran absolutely their best race as a team.”

This was Thompson Valley’s fourth girls cross country state title.

On the boys 4A side, once Liam Meirow took the lead late in in the race he found the winning gear.

The Summit High School senior sped to the finish line in a dead sprint to capture the coveted title in 16:27.1 seconds.

“That was the roughest race I ever had, but I didn’t give up,” Meirow said moments after claiming his first state cross country state championship. “I was able to keep progressing my speed throughout the race.”

The 6-foot-1, 140-pound Meirow said he took the lead in the 3.2-mile race from Pueblo Centennial’s Michael Duran with a half-mile remaining.

“This race went out perfectly,” said Meirow, whose previous best state cross country finish was 10th last year. “You always underestimate the pain, but you have to push it no matter what. If I’m confident in anything it is my finishing kick. I knew I could hold everybody off and win.”

Broomfield’s Ethan Gonzalez was right on Meirow’s heels finishing in 16:29.6. Centennial’s Duran was third at 16:43.4.

“I was toe-to-toe with Liam when we turned into the stadium, but I had nothing left,”  said Gonzales, a senior. “I gave it everything I had. I have no regrets.”

Broomfield did get a measure of revenge winning the team title with 89 points.  The Classical Academy was second with 123 points.

“We did something special as a team,” Gonzales said.

Ricardo Ocampo, Gonzales’ teammate,  came in seventh.

“We all did our best and it us great to win it,” Ocampo , a senior, said.

This was Broomfield’s first state boys cross country title in school history.

“This was a very big deal for us,” Broomfield coach Greg Weich said. “Ethan and Ricardo did a great job for us was our depth.”
