  • Nutrition Quiz: What type of breakfast eater are you?

Over the past nine weeks, we have explored healthy eating for athletes and have established that most high school athletes do not have to eat differently than MyPlate recommendations to obtain the nutrition they need to perform at their best. Still, it is important to remember that the choices you make at dinner, lunch, snack and BREAKFAST are all critical to ensuring you receive the nutrition you need for academic and athletic success.

Last week, we celebrated National School Breakfast Week. While it remains debatable which meal is the most important, there is no debating that breakfast is essential for students and athletes who are looking to perform in school and on the field, and have better overall nutrient intakes. Research confirms that breakfast eaters perform better on standardized tests, work faster and make fewer errors in school and work, have improved brain activity in mathematical thinking with fewer errors on math equations, and are better able to concentrate on learning and be more creative.

    milk

Regardless of the benefits, many students still find it challenging to eat breakfast every morning, and find themselves skipping this morning meal for many different reasons.

What kind of breakfast skipper are you? Determine your breakfast barriers and learn ways to avoid breakfast skipping in your busy life.

    SLEEPER

    • “I’d rather sleep than eat” is your life mantra.
    • You set your alarm five minutes before you have be out the door, enough time to brush your teeth and put clothes on.
    • Your number one breakfast complaint is that you don’t have time to make breakfast.

Breakfast solutions: You are a grab-and-go breakfast eater. Does your school offer healthy grab-and-go breakfasts like those available with fueluptoplay60.com grants? Other healthy grab-and-go breakfasts can be made at your house in the evenings. Try making a large batch of smoothies to store in the refrigerator in to-go cups or keep individual servings of chocolate milk and easy to eat fruit, such as bananas, in the kitchen at all times.

    BRUNCHER

    • You are never hungry first thing in the morning.
    • Food tastes weird after you have just brushed your teeth.
    • You become ravenously hungry around 10:30 a.m. every morning.

Breakfast solutions: Breakfast in the classroom is your best solution, you get the nutrition you need a bit later in the morning, but before you need the energy to learn. Does your school offer breakfast in the classroom? Have you expressed interest in breakfast in the classroom to your teacher or kitchen staff? As a bruncher, it is likely that you may enjoy eating smaller, more frequent meals during the day. When eating snacks, try to incorporate multiple food groups. When you are not hungry for a meal first thing in the morning, a glass of white or chocolate milk will provide energy that sticks with you until your mid-afternoon snack.

    APATHETIC:

    • You know the benefits of eating breakfast but never know what to eat.
    • You would rather chat with friends before school than taking the time to eat breakfast.
    • You become bored quickly by eating the same meal day after day.

Breakfast solutions: Making a list of your favorite things to eat in the morning will be helpful for you. Share this list with your family so that you can all make a plan for what to eat in the mornings. Remember, leftovers such as cheese pizza with vegetable toppings can make a delicious, nutritious breakfast.

Once you have determined the barriers you have to skipping breakfast, it is fun to come up with creative ideas to tackle this problem. Please share your ideas with us on social media at facebook.com/WesternDairyAssociation or using #westerndairy on Twitter. Breakfast is important for athletics, academic and overall health- providing both energy and critical nutrients your body needs to perform at its best.

Athletes can train harder and perform better with proper nutrition. Visit westerndairyassociation.org/health-and-nutrition/milk-and-sports-nutrition to read more about milk as an exercise recovery beverage and learn how to eat for peak athletic performance.

  • Nehme’s four-point play lifts Cheyenne Mountain over Thompson Valley in 2 OTs

DENVER — Cheyenne Mountain needed a four-point play from senior Ghassan Nehme to finally end the double-overtime Class 4A boys basketball state quarterfinal Saturday against No. 1 seed Thompson Valley.

Nehme was fouled on a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the second overtime period. The senior made the free throw to give the No. 2-seeded Indians (21-5) an 82-81 lead.

“At that time, playing in a second overtime, anything can happen,” said Nehme about his miraculous four-point play. “We were blessed and able to pull this one out.”

Nehme scored a game-high 41 points, which included 17 points in the third quarter. His younger brother Christian Nehme (20 points) sealed the victory sinking a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to give Cheyenne Mountain an 84-81 victory and the program’s first trip to the Final Four in school history.

Thompson Valley (24-2) was the final No. 1 seed remaining after Valor Christian and D’Evelyn were knocked out of the state tournament earlier in the day.

Cheyenne Mountain coach J’on St. Clair said there was no talk before the game with the Indians having a shot to eliminate the last No. 1 seed standing.

“We don’t talk about anybody else,” St. Clair said. “We focus in on ourselves because if you start looking at someone else you seem to get knocked off.”

Thompson Valley had an eight-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Indians went on a 14-0 run to take the lead.

Foul trouble also plagued the Eagles. Senior Collin Smith (17 points) fouled out with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. Also, senior starter Estevan Garcia fouled out for Thompson Valley.

Thompson Valley senior Grant Rohrbouck stepped up with a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help send the game to overtime. Rohrbouck, who finished with 26 points, put in a layup with four seconds left in the first overtime to tie it at 72-72 and send it to a second overtime.

Junior Nathan Resty hit a big 3-pointer for Cheyenne Mountain in the second overtime and Christian Nehme (20 points) was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in overtime to help the Indians’ cause.

“Christian is Mr. Clutch,” Ghassan said of his younger brother who helped guide Cheyenne Mountain’s boys soccer team to a 4A state title last fall. “He did it in soccer and now he is doing it in basketball. He is a fireball out there.”

Cheyenne Mountain will now head to the Coors Events Center in Boulder for the 4A semifinals Friday, March 14. The winner of the all-Denver Prep League semifinal between Thomas Jefferson and Denver South that was the final boys’ game on the docket Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum.

  • Defending 4A girls champion Pueblo South rides defense to Great 8 win

DENVER — Pueblo South’s defense kept dreams alive of earning back-to-back Class 4A girls’ basketball championship state trophies.

“We are just trying to do what we did last year,” Pueblo South senior Shannon Patterson said after the Colts’ 36-21 victory. “It’s a great atmosphere and our team did really well. We showed a lot of heart on the court and that is what counts.”

The No. 1 seed Colts (24-2) dominated No. 2 seed Elizabeth Cardinals (23-3) in the Great 8 game Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum. Pueblo South’s victory was spearheaded by the Colts’ defense that held Elizabeth to just five points in the first half.

The Cardinals finished the game 8-for-35 from the field for 22.9 percent shooting. The familiar face of Elizabeth senior Tatum Neubert was the key defensively for Pueblo South.

Pueblo South downed Elizabeth 56-41 earlier in the year on Feb. 1. Patterson had 24 points in the victory, while Neubert had 25 points in the loss for the Cardinals.

“I knew I had to shut her (Neubert) down,” Pueblo South junior Sissy Hall said. “If she was getting the ball she would be scoring and it would be a different game.”

Hall used her length to deny the 6-foot-2 Neubert the ball down low the entire game. Neubert was held to two points through three quarters. She eventually finished with a team-high nine points for the Cardinals.

“Sissy did a really good job and the guards did a really good job putting pressure on,” Patterson said. “We knew she (Neubert) was going to try to take over.”

Elizabeth rallied with 13 points in the fourth quarter after trailing 25-8 after three quarters. The Cardinals went on a 10-0, but it was just too late to overcome the 20-point led Pueblo South had built by the end of the third quarter.

The Colts didn’t have a stellar shooting night shooting 12-for-43 from the field for 27.9 percent, but it was good enough with their solid defense.

Patterson finished with a game-high 17 points, including going 9-for-13 from the free-throw line. Hall added eight points and Jaylyn Duran and Kendra Jesik had five points each for the Colts.

“We just knew would couldn’t let our tiredness get to us,” said Hall, who only left the floor in the final seconds. “We had to keep going hard. We only had 32 minutes to give it our all.”

The defending 4A state champions will have the opportunity to win its six girls hoops title in the school’s history as the Colts head to the Final Four for the third straight season.

Pueblo South will face Mesa Ridge in the semifinals Thursday, March 13, at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. Mesa Ridge defeated D’Evelyn 47-41 earlier in the day at the Coliseum.

“It feels great. We are ready,” Hall said about another trip to Boulder. “We know what we have to do to win.”

  • Denver South boys dunk way into final four with win over rival Thomas Jefferson

DENVER — Bragging rights in the Denver Prep League and more importantly a ticket to the Class 4A boys’ basketball state semifinals was on the line Saturday night at the Denver Coliseum.

Denver Prep foes Thomas Jefferson and Denver South had split their previous two meetings this season. The rubber match went to the Rebels of Denver South with 54-52 win, which had a dramatic ending — and led to Denver South’s first final four appearance since 1970.

After trailing for the majority of the game, Thomas Jefferson (17-9) tied things at 52-52 on a bucket from senior Josh McNair with 50 seconds left. The Spartans had the ball with the chance to take the lead, but South senior Ibrahim Sylla got a steal with just under 30 seconds left.

“Defense wins games,” said Sylla, who finished with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. “I was just determined to block a shot or get the steal. I was just determined.”

Sylla fed the ball ahead to senior teammate Tyson Purifoy after the steal. Purifoy beat all Spartan defenders down the court and finger rolled in a layup with 23 seconds left for the eventual game-winning shot.

“If I miss that I’m going to be crying,” said Purifoy about his layup. “I just had to make it. Make it for my team.”

Thomas Jefferson had the final possession, but after a missed jumper in the lane Sylla grabbed the rebound, and the final horn sounded.

The No. 2-seeded Rebels (18-8) will face Cheyenne Mountain in the semifinals Friday, March 13, at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. Purifoy added that he believes the tournament is “wide open” with none of the No. 1 seeds advancing to the semifinals.

Seven state basketball trophies belong to the Rebels, but Denver South hasn’t won a championship since 1970, which was also the team’s last trip to the semis.

Sylla had a monster first quarter, slamming down a couple of dunks on his way to 11 points. His final dunk actually caused a delay to start the second quarter. The force of the dunk knocked the basket standard off its moorings.

“I’m kind of skinny, but I’m strong,” Sylla said of his first quarter dunks.

Foul trouble kept Sylla on the bench for the majority of the second quarter, but the Rebels were still able to hold on to their lead. Denver South was ahead 28-20 at halftime.

Purifoy found his outside shooting touch in the third quarter with a pair of field goals. He finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

“Anytime Tyson can get a mid-range game going he is almost unstoppable,” Denver South coach Malik Fletcher said of Purifoy. “You can’t keep him from getting to the paint. If he can knockdown shots he’s almost impossible to check.”

Senior Antonio Garcia was key in the second half. He buried a 3-pointer late in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 44-32 lead and was 3-for-5 from the free-throw line to finish with eight points.

However, Thomas Jefferson rallied in the fourth quarter behind McNair (18 points), junior Jalen Rose (11 points) and senior Treyvon Andres (eight points). The Spartans come-from-behind attempt just fell short.

The Spartans have three state titles under their belts, including back-to-back 4A titles in 2006 and 2005. Thomas Jefferson have had a rough go of it in the state tournament in recent years, bowing out in the Great 8 or Sweet 16 the last four seasons.

  • Broomfield girls hoops back in a familiar position after downing Palmer Ridge

DENVER — Broomfield girls basketball is two wins away from regaining its familiar label of state champions.

“We are definitely hungry. We are ready. We want it bad,” Broomfield senior Bri Wilbur said after the Eagles’ 74-51 victory over Palmer Ridge in the Class 4A state quarterfinals Saturday night.

The Eagles won five consecutive 4A hoops titles from 2007 to 2011.

Broomfield fell just short of regaining its championship form last season when the Eagles lost in overtime to Pueblo South in the 4A title game. In 2012, Broomfield came up short against eventual champ Air Academy in the state quarterfinals.

“That is always in the back of our minds,” Broomfield junior Callie Kaiser said of the last two season-ending losses. “We really want it that title back.”

The victory Saturday at the Denver Coliseum sends No. 1 seed and undefeated Broomfield (26-0) back to the Coors Events Center in Boulder. The Eagles face No. 1 seed Valor Christian in the 4A semifinals on Thursday, March 13.

Palmer Ridge (22-4) did give Broomfield a game through the first half. The Eagles led 37-28, but pushed their lead to 22 points — 62-40 — at the end of the third quarter. Kaiser and sophomore Brenna Chase were huge in the Eagles’ 25-point third quarter.

Kaiser played just four minutes in the first half because of foul trouble. She scored eight points in the third quarter and finished with 10 points on the night.

“I wanted to come out here and do what I could,” Kaiser said. “Getting those two fouls quick really slowed my momentum down, but our team played really well and got the momentum going for us.”

Wilbur, who finished with 18 points, credited Kaiser for Broomfield being able to pull-away from Palmer Ridge after halftime.

“Callie, right after halftime, stepped up her game and I think that was the spark for our third quarter,” Wilbur said. “It was good with everyone scoring like that.”

Five Eagles finished in double-digit points. Sophomore Brenna Chase had a team-high 19 points, including going 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Junior Nicole Lehrer had a big first half scoring all of her 15 points before halftime. Sophomore Brenna Fankell came off the bench for 10 points.

Turnover problems plagued Palmer Ridge throughout the game. The Bears were credited with 24 turnovers.

“We really got into them. We picked them up early and started finishing (off turnovers),” Kaiser said. “We talked about having good defense and not allowing them to control the game.”

Palmer Ridge senior Ali Meyer led the way for the Bears with 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Senior Rhyley Lane (eight points) helped the Bears’ cause with a pair of 3-pointers in the first half.

The closest game the Eagles have played this year was an 18-point victory over 5A’s ThunderRidge. Wilbur said she didn’t mind a test before heading to Boulder.

“It was really fun. Palmer Ridge had a really good defense and it was fun to go against it,” Wilbur said. “We just played our game and played hard. That kept us going.”
