Chatfield’s lacrosse standout Lanuza sticking close to home

Chatfield seniors (left to right) Matt Gaiter, Kendra Lanuza and Ben Overholt where three of nine Chargers to sign scholarships Wednesday to continue their athletic/academic careers in college. More photos. (Dennis Pleuss) LITTLETON — Chatfield senior Kendra Lanuza welcomes being the torch barer when it comes to girls lacrosse in Jefferson County.
Lanuza had three teammates — Emily McMinimee, Allie Sale and Rachel Walker — sign with Division I lacrosse programs last year. The talented Chargers’ lacrosse squad advanced to the state semifinals last spring for the first time in the program’s history.
Now it’s Lanuza’s turn. The attacker, who led the state with 101 goals her junior season, has signed to continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Denver after graduating from Chatfield this coming spring.
“I want to follow in their footsteps and be a good example for the younger generations,” said Lanuza of becoming the latest DI girls lacrosse product to come out of Jeffco.

Chatfield senior Kendra Lanuza, left, led the state with 101 goals last girls lacrosse season. Lanuza has signed to play lacrosse at the University of Denver after completing her senior season at Chatfield. More photos. (Dennis Pleuss) The answer to why chose DU was easy for Lanuza. The Pioneers are a growing powerhouse coming off a 17-2 season and berth in the NCAA tournament last year. DU is ranked 19th in the preseason IWLCA Coaches poll.
“I really liked the location. The coaches were awesome. The team really works well together. They are definitely becoming a power in the west,” said Lanuza who already has some impressive career stats with 182 goals and 79 assists going into her senior season at Chatfield. “Beginning close to home is nice. Then there is the weather. I love it out here, it’s definitely better than the East Coast.”
Lanuza started played lacrosse in the fifth grade. She knew she could play at the highest collegiate level when DI coaches showed interest at tournament on the East Coast between her freshman and sophomore year.
She also knows there is a tremendous jump from high school to DI. Gianna Ossello a friend who graduated from Wheat Ridge High School last year and is a freshman on the women’s lacrosse team at Duke University, ranked No. 8 nationally, has tipped off Lanuza on what to expect.
“She (Ossello) said it’s definitely an adjustment. It’s way different then what we are used to in high school,” Lanuza said. “It’s more competitive and everyone is at your same level if not better.”
Lanuza will begin her final prep season for the Chargers in a month when Chatfield opens up against ThunderRidge on March 5 at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood. She hopes the Chargers are able to win a third straight conference title and enjoy another deep run into the postseason.

Bear Creek’s Olabisi Johnson taking unique set of skills to CSU

Bear Creek senior Olabisi Johnson racked up more than 1,600-yard of total offense his senior season on the football field for the Bears. Johnson will attempt to defend his Class 5A 110-meter hurdles state title on the track before heading to Fort Collins to play football for the Rams. (Dennis Pleuss) LAKEWOOD — Bear Creek senior Olabisi Johnson was the Jack-of-all-trades for the Bears on the football field last fall.
Johnson racked up more than 1,500 yards of total offense running, receiving, along with returning kickoffs and punts. Not to mention leading the team with more than 100 tackles.
“He meant everything. We put him all over the field this year,” Bear Creek coach Zach Morris said of the Bears’ standout that signed Wednesday morning to continue his athletic and academic career at Colorado State University. “Three-year starter, a guy we knew we could count on day-in and day-out. We didn’t have to worry about him in the classroom or off the field, which was fantastic. He was a crucial piece.”
After admittedly two tough seasons with records of 2-8 and 3-7, Johnson was a cornerstone in the resurgence by Bear Creek’s football program. The Bears finished with a 7-4 record, along with a first-round playoff victory.
Robinson had verbally committed to CSU during the summer, but a wrench got thrown into the mix when Rams’ head coach Jim McElwain left CSU to take the head-coaching job at the University of Florida on Dec. 4. However, new CSU coach Mike Bobo retained assistant coaches Marty English, who recruited Johnson, and Alvis Whitted, receivers coach, the decision to stay with the Rams didn’t change for Johnson.
“I love Colorado State because it’s close to home and Fort Collins is a great place,” Johnson said. “It’s really exciting. I’m ready to have the next chapter of my life start.”
The question now is where on the football field will Johnson fit for the Rams. It’s likely that Johnson will join CSU’s wide receiving core that features Rashard Higgins, first consensus All-American at CSU since 1995.
Johnson has been in contact via Twitter with an out-of-state recruit J.C. Robles. A 6-foot-5, 202 quarterback from California that signed Wednesday with CSU.

(Derek Regensburger/MaxPreps) “He seems like a real good guy,” Johnson said of Robles. “I’m excited to get to know him.”
Robles was a nice addition to a solid in-state haul by the Rams than includes Milo Hall (Cherry Creek), Salofi Gaoa (Rocky Mountain), Richard King (Rangeview), Chukwuma Obinnah (Grandview) and Braxton Davis (Poudre).
Focusing on just offense is welcoming for Johnson.
“It gets confusing learning all the plays on offense and defense,” Johnson said. “Coach Bobo has a good idea of what we are going to do. We are going to run a no-huddle offense, so we’ll be moving.”
Johnson isn’t done moving at a high rate of speed for the Bears. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound senior will run for Bear Creek’s track team this spring. Johnson is the defending Class 5A state champion in the 110-meter hurdles.
“I definitely need to get that state championship in the 110 (hurdles) again,” Johnson said. “I’m hoping to do better in some of my other events and then we have a 4×100 relay that is looking pretty good this year. We’ll have some pretty fast guys.”
Johnson’s final prep action will likely be at the state track meet in May at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. A place Johnson has spent countless hours competing at on the football field and on the track over his four years at Bear Creek.
“I haven’t thought about it a lot yet. It will be good to finish there (Jeffco Stadium),” Johnson said of his prep career coming to an end. “I love track. I got thrown into it freshman year and found a love for it. It will be hard to let go.”

Photos: Mountain Vista hockey staves off Air Academy’s rally
LITTLETON — Latrell Harris scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 5:29 remaining to lift No. 2 Mountain Vista hockey to a 5-4 win over No. 7 Air Academy on Monday.
Harris’ tally came on the power play, off assists from captain Bryan Hancock and Kaden Stewart. It helped stave off a furious rally from the Kadets, who trailed 4-1 midway through the second period.

Plan ahead to keep meals healthy
Ahh — winter in Colorado! Days of below freezing temperatures and inches of snow, mingled with sunny days and warm temperatures that make you double check the month on your calendar.
When the weather is unpredictable, it’s really easy for our healthy eating habits to be just as up and down. One thing that can help with consistency in our behaviors is to plan ahead.
Why not pick a few of these tricks to keep your diet healthy all winter long?
- Make a smoothie with milk, Greek yogurt and your favorite fruits. Even if your favorite berries or peaches aren’t in season, grab a bag of frozen fruit from the freezer section. Adding frozen fruit to your smoothies helps create the perfect creamy texture. Keep a batch in the refrigerator for two to three days — you can even leave the smoothie in the blender and re-blend before you enjoy a serving.
- Have a yogurt parfait by layering vanilla yogurt, sliced berries and toasted almonds. This can be done in a pretty glass or in a small plastic container with a lid — ready to grab on your way out the door for a quick breakfast on the go.
- Keep oatmeal in stock at home. Oatmeal is a quick, healthy snack packed full of fiber. Next time you make oatmeal, use milk in place of water and top your hot cereal with sliced bananas. Cooking your oatmeal with milk adds eight grams of protein to each serving, keeping you full until lunch!
- For lunch, pack small containers of cottage cheese and diced tomatoes with a sprinkle of black pepper. Cottage cheese is a great source of calcium and protein. Round out your meal with a piece of fruit and some whole-grain crackers.
- Instead of using sour cream, combine plain Greek yogurt with your favorite dip mix. Keep your dip in the refrigerator; it helps you to remember to enjoy more fruits and vegetables, such as carrot and celery sticks.
- Instead of using salt in your vegetable soup, sprinkle parmesan cheese on top. The salt in the cheese boosts the flavor, plus you are punching up the nutrition in your meal with dairy.
- Even though you aren’t sweating as much as you do in the summertime, you still need to drink plenty of fluid — strive for eight glasses a day! That can be water, milk, 100-percent fruit juice or other non-caffeinated beverages.
- Sneak a few extra servings of veggies into lunch. Add spinach and bell pepper strips to your turkey and provolone sandwich or wrap.
Following these ideas can keep you healthy and strong all season long!

Ball Fever: Upsets rule boys basketball’s week

This was a common sight last week: An elated team celebrating an upset win after the buzzer — as was the case with D’Evelyn taking down Valor Christian on Thursday. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com) Last week was again full of surprises with new players and teams stepping up each night. There are two constants that stand as we enter February however: 5A No. 1 Regis Jesuit and 4A No. 1 Longmont remain our sole undefeated squads!
Let’s review the action.

Week In Review
Monday, Jan. 26:
- Quite an impressive performance by Eaglecrest as the Raptors invaded the Angels house and was up by 23 at halftime in this 5A top 10 matchup. Jack Buckmelter led the Angels with 16 points but it wasn’t enough to slow Peter Anderson and Elijah Ross’ “guard show”! Anderson ended the game with 25 (18 of that came from his hot left hand in first quarter) while Ross finished with 19 points, 3 assists. Brian Carey and Jordan Willis both had double-double stat nights of their own leading a second half charge for the Angels but the deficit was too much to overcome. Quite a road message sent by the Raptors!
- Paul Ambuul’s 23 points, 8 rebounds helped Air Academy win the overtime session 11-3 for the 8-point win over Falcon.
- Dennis Pleuss was in the house as the young Lakewood Tigers upset No. 4, and previously undefeated, Dakota Ridge.
Tuesday, Jan. 27:

Mitchell beat The Classical Academy on Tuesday. (Coy Harvey) - Donovan Oldham scored 17 to push Rampart’s 13-point win over Fountain-Fort Carson.
- Abraham Lincoln’s 23-12 third quarter stretch put them ahead for good in the solid home win over Montbello 67-53.

- Chris Arehart’s 28 points (10-10 free throws) helped Broomfield get the tight win 48-44 over Fairview.
- Pam Wagner caught Braxton Bertolette’s 19 points, and another double-double for Ryan Quaid as Fossil Ridge traveled to Horizon.
- Two “double-doubles” from two guys on the same night? Pretty rare, but check out Tarren Storey-Way’s 17 points, 11 rebounds and Tyrei Randall’s 19 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steal for a true “stat-stuffer” of the week performance in Rangeview’s win at Adams City.
- Regis had another balanced win as they poured it on Douglas County and Jack Eberhard was “snappin pics.”
- George Washington’s young squad is looking to cause more trouble in DPL play as they beat Thomas Jefferson by two with Jervae Green and Jeremiah Hyppolite scoring 19 points each. Josh McNair had 11 point, 13 rebound double-double along with Jalen Rose’s 19 points in the loss.
- D’Shawn Schwartz led three players in double-digit scoring as Sand Creek got the 15-point win over Vista Ridge. Hunter Maldonado had 23 points, 7 rebounds, 7 steals in the loss.
- Another upset as Heritage took down No. 7 Mountain Vista. Matt Mathewes’ photos!
- Monarch continues to roll along with 86-59 over Loveland. The 25-14 second quarter started the stretch.
- Need to see this good looking soph down south at Pueblo West, David Simental, who scored 26 points (5-5 free throws, 3-3 behind the arc) helping P West pull away from Pueblo Centennial.
- Dan Morhman was on site as Sierra took care of some serious business in a big win over Widefield.

- Jalen Sanders led Valor Christian with 23 points, 7 steals in the Eagles 24-point road win at Standley Lake setting up a big game vs. D’Evelyn on Thursday.
- Talk about balance! No. 1 Longmont got 13 points from three players remaining undefeated in home win over Silver Creek.
- The 5A Continental teams won’t find it easy when they visit 4A Ponderosa but Rock Canyon’s Tyler Garcia’s 18 points helped the Jags hold on to a 3-point road win.
- Holy Family got 26 points from Chris Helbig along with 21 from Luke Golter to stay unbeaten in league with win over Windsor.
- How about a “Double” double-double alert for Denver South’s big men! Chudier Bile piled up 25 points, 16 rebounds along side big Chuck Gavin’s 19 points, 18 rebounds in a fast paced 101-86 win at Denver North. Michael Deleon with 32 points, 7 rebounds for the Vikings in the loss.
- Widefield came into this one playing strong of lately but Sierra was having none of it as they started the game 20-8 en route to a 77-39 thrashing led by Ke’Andre Lewis’ 20 point, 11 rebound double-double.
Wednesday, Jan. 28:
- Dakota Ridge continues to keep the stats “a secret” but they are back on the winning track after 20 point win over Ralston Valley.

- Tough “back to back” for Lakewood as they lost by 1 in overtime to Columbine.
- “Well, hello!” Daytone Jennings as he joins the party with a “monsta” 36 point, 16 rebound double-double as a new addition for Aurora Central’s win over Thornton.
Thursday, Jan. 29:

D’Evelyn’s Grant Witherspoon. (Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com) - Lincoln used 10-point advantages in both the second and third quarters to eventually win by that 20-point margin as Denver West paid a visit.
- Doherty wasn’t a very nice visitor as they traveled over to Pine Creek down south winning by 18 points behind 20 from Brevin Brimble and 20 from Dalvin Brushier (7 rebounds, 7 assists).
- How about five players in double figures for Golden as they won by 25 over Arvada.
- Dennis Pluess has the story and photos covered for us on the night Fever “favorite” Grant Witherspoon scored 11 big ones in a row to help D’Evelyn pull the upset over Valor.
- Fairview went to the extreme “stall and slow down” game holding the rock for minutes at a time per possession and it slowed Boulder for a while but Landon Taliaferro’s 13 and Garrett Turner’s 11 points gave the Panthers the rivalry win.
- Ray Ibarra scored 21 points and Tre Pierre’s double-double of 14 points, 11 rebounds led Widefield to the win over at Woodland Park.

- Out west Grand Junction got defensive only giving up 28 points to Grand Junction Central in the blow-out rivalry game.
- TJ Clark Jr. with a solid 17 points to help Liberty win by that same margin over Palmer.
- Deven Nelson scored 24 for Mesa Ridge but it wasn’t enough to sop Sierra from landing the road win.
Friday, Jan. 30:

Highlands Ranch took down Mountain Vista on Friday. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com) - Big De’Ron landed a 21 point, 11 rebound double-double as Overland handled Mullen. Nate Davis with 17 in the loss.
- No. 2 Thunderridge got a double-double from big man Zach Pirog in what the Fever crew says was his “best game thus far” for the Grizzlies and jumping out 23-11 on Rock Canyon did the trick. Mitch Lombard scored 20 in the loss.
- How about Tyler Converse’s perfect 13-13 from the free throw line leading to 28 points and Legacy’s 5 point win over Loveland.
- Ryley Stewart had a “monster” double-double of 29 points, 10 rebounds lifting Highlands Ranch over No. 7 Mountain Vista and Matt Mathewes caught the cool pics.
- Smoky Hill gave the Raptors a scare but Colbey Ross is back in the line up scoring 20 points for Eaglecrest along with Blend Advili’s double-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds led to a 5-point win.
- Fossil Ridge remains unbeaten in league play and Ryan Quaid’s 19 point, 12 rebound double-double did in Broomfield.

- Had to check-in via twitter with our guy Grant Witherspoon to ensure a second quarter shut out, along with only giving up 19 total points wasn’t a typo! Witherspoon, who scored 26, confirmed D’Evelyn is “yessir! playing some defense” after the win over Arvada.
- The Cougars trying to keep their league title hopes alive got an important 1-point win over Cherry Creek led by Ronnie Barfield’s 15 points.

- Justinian Jessup led three in double figure scoring for No. 1 Longmont with 18 points as they won big again over Centaurus.
Saturday, Jan. 31:
- Our state’s top squad Regis pulled away from another winning 57-38 at home over Heritage.
- Whoa! The Fever crew had a chance to catch Sand Creek last month and was impressed which truly makes us wonder, “how good is this Rampart squad?. Rampart won by 18 points and Clayton Hacker led 5 players in double figure scoring with 17!
- Big one in Jeffco 4A, and Brian Miller wrote about the special start Golden is off to. The visiting Valor Christian Eagles were having no part of backing down to hot Golden as their 23-7 fourth quarter sealed the 23-point road win.
- Palmer pulled off a sweet road win for the Terrors 48-45 over Doherty.
- Starting to get the feeling Brian Carey doesn’t mind being on the big stage of the Saturday afternoon “ThunderDome”! Last time out he rocked ThunderRidge with 44 points and this time it was Montbello who suffered Carey’s 34 points, 10 assists, 5 steals in the Angels DPL win.
