Gia Lemley scored the winning goal with 3:40 remaining in overtime to lift Broomfield girls soccer to a 3-2 win over Pine Creek in the Class 5A girls soccer semifinals on Wednesday.

It was Lemley’s second goal of the game. It capped a game-long rally for the Eagles.

Pine Creek took a 1-0 lead on Ryanne Parker’s goal just 20 seconds in, but Broomfield rallied with two goals midway through the first half to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

Pine Creek’s Jayne Lydiatt tied the game in the second half, and it wound up in overtime.

Aspen advanced to its first-ever boys lacrosse title game with a 11-10 win over Dawson on Wednesday.

The No. 5 Dawson School Mustangs fell one game short of advancing to the state championship game, but still finished the best season in school history. They trailed the top-seeded Skiers 5-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Alex Aleu and Hunter Watts were able to cut the Aspen lead to 10-8 with just under six minutes remaining.

The Skiers added another goal to cushion their lead but the Mustangs responded with two, including one by Gavin Pure with 34 seconds left to make it a one-goal game.

But that’s as close as it would get as Aspen was able to hang on in those finals seconds, giving the Skiers the win.

They have advanced to Friday’s state title game at Sports Authority Field.

The game remained tight, but the Eagles were able to hang on and will face Aspen in the 4A state title game Friday.

It is Valor’s first lacrosse championship game in team history.

  • 2A girls soccer semifinal roundup: Vail Mountain moves to title game

DENVER — Tess Johnson looked up and saw two seconds. She slid — and scored the goal and put Vail Mountain into the first-ever Class 2A girls soccer title game.

Johnson, a freshman, beat the buzzer at halftime to give top-seeded Vail Mountain a 1-0 lead. Officially, she scored with 1.5 seconds remaining. It held up as the lone goal as the Gore Rangers (15-1-0) beat No. 4 Denver Christian in the semifinals.

“We had been talking about playing to the last second and not giving up,” Johnson said after the game. “I saw the ball go over the defense, and I just ran for it.

“It’s all I needed to do, just to get it past the goalie. It was really breath-taking, though, because I heard the cheer and I heard the buzzer go. I got chills.”

Vail Mountain got possession of the ball in its own end with 17 seconds remaining. A few quick passes later, and the Gore Rangers were streaking down the right sideline toward Denver Christian’s net.

A lofted through ball found its way to Johnson, who then tucked it away.

“It was really just a blue-collar goal,” said Vail Mountain coach Bob Bandoni. “We had people scrambling, everybody fighting, and that’s what we talk about, is out-competing the opponents.

“It obviously was frayed around the edges,” he added. “It wasn’t completely structured the way we do it, but that’s the way we need to fight to get goals like that. That was critical timing for us.”

Bandoni added that Denver Christian was “the best team we’ve played.” The win avenged a 4-1 loss to the Crusaders on March 27.

“They were tough,” he said. “I mean they really made us play.”

Vail Mountain will play the winner of the second semifinal at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

It is the first title game appearance for Vail Mountain in the history of the school’s girls soccer program.

“We’re the first team to do it, and it’s just and honor,” Johnson said.

    (3) Dawson 1, (2) Front Range Christian 0

Liv Cramer broke a scoreless tie with 5 1/2 minutes remaining to lift Dawson to the title game.

Both teams had chances throughout, but nothing came to fruition for most of the game. That is, until Cramer broke in alone and tucked a shot in the bottom left corner of the net.

The win means Dawson will reach the title game for the second time in school history. The Mustangs also went to 3A’s title game in 2009, but lost.

AURORA — The Cherry Creek boys lacrosse team is hoping the fourth time is a charm.

The Bruins, who have lost in the championship game of the previous three Class 5A state finals, will try to break that streak Friday after winning Wednesday’s semifinal 13-5 over Kent Denver.

It was Cherry Creek’s second win over the Sun Devils this season, and is a game featuring teams familiar with each other over the years.

The Sun Devils held tight until three straight goals in the first half of the second period gave the Bruins a 5-2 lead.

Cherry Creek opened up a wide advantage with a four-goal onslaught in the opening four minutes of the third period.

At one point, Cherry Creek’s lead was 10 goals before a pair of Joe Rassenfoss scores for Kent Denver provided the final margin.

Henry Adams and Asher Nolting each score three goals for the winning team.

Adams said the team wasn’t concerned when the Sun Devil took an early lead.

“Our strategy is always to play our hardest and it will come,” said Adams.

“I think (it was a matter of) taking a little more time on our shots,” Bruins coach Bryan Perry said of his team kicking it in gear in the second period.

As for a return trip to the state finals, “There’s a different feel this year,” Adams said of his team’s hopes of winning the school’s fifth state title.

“This group is very singularly focused,” Perry said of what he hopes will prove the difference on Friday.

The state championship game is at 7:30 Friday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

AURORA — The experience of the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team showed its force Wednesday night.

The Raiders, the defending Class 5A state champions, shook off an early deficit to defeat Mountain Vista 11-4 in the state semifinals at Legacy Stadium.

Regis, a perennial state power, will face familiar opponent and fellow state finals regular Cherry Creek in Friday’s  championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Cherry Creek defeated Regis Jesuit 8-4 a month ago during the regular season.

Wednesday’s game marked Mountain Vista’s first-ever state semifinal appearance.

Regis overcame a 3-1 deficit, taking the lead on a pair of goals within eight seconds of each other late in the second period to grab a slim 4-3 halftime advantage.

The experience of the Raiders showed in the second half as they scored four goals, three by Chet Dunstan (two in a span of just six seconds), to take command 8-3 in the third period.

“We knew what we needed to do,” Dunstan said.

Of his three-goal splurge, “I felt like we needed the momentum,” he said.

The difference, Raiders coach Jim Soran said, was holding the Golden Eagles’ Christian Barker, Colin Munro and Bryan Hancock in check. The trio had scorecd 125 goals entering the game.

“Our defense today played outstanding,” Soran said.

As for the rematch with Cherry Creek, “I’m glad we did lose to them (during the regular season),” Dunstan said. “We have a lot of motivation,”

Squaring off against a traditional rival, Soran looks forward to the rematch.

“It’s fun,” he said of any game between the Raiders and the Bruins.
