ThunderRidge has named Samantha Martin its new girls basketball coach, promoting the former assistant to take over its program.
Martin, a 2010 graduate of Chaparral, is a social studies teacher at ThunderRidge, and was an assistant coach for the girls basketball team the past two seasons.
She played college basketball at Colorado State from 2010-14, earning all-conference honors and serving as team captain. Martin played professionally in Switzerland after she graduated.
“She is incredibly passionate about building relationships and implementing a mindset that creates competitiveness and growth,” said ThunderRidge athletic director Sean Patterson.
Martin takes over for Matt Asik, who resigned after this past season. Asik went 44-33 in three seasons, and led the Grizzlies to the Class 5A championship in 2015-16.

Alec Pell was not short on offers to extend his football career to the collegiate level. But after considering his offers, the two-way standout at Cherry Creek decided that Boise State is where he’ll go in 2019.
Pell has played in 25 games for the Bruins, amassing 1,255 all-purpose yards and scoring 13 touchdowns.
As a junior in 2017, he contributed on the defensive side of the ball, recording 25 tackles, including one sack. He also grabbed an interception.
Pell received offers from the Air Force Academy, Colorado State, Iowa State, Cal and several others, but decided that Boise State and its blue turf was the best fit for him.

HIGHLANDS RANCH — After scoring 11 of its 15 goals in the second half, Highlands Ranch boys lacrosse beating Rockhurst (Kansas City, MO) 15-3 on Saturday.
Durango baseball completed a two-game sweep of No. 10 Montrose on Saturday, coming away with a 10-9 win.
The Demons, who won 10-7 on Friday, used a 4-0 lead in the first inning to build an advantage, and, after a six-run sixth inning from Montrose, scored two in the bottom of the seventh to win.
Gavin Mestas led Durango’s offense by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, including the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. Dawson Marcum (3-for-4) and Ryan Genualdi (2-for-4) also had two RBIs.
Fynn Hyson threw 5 2/3 innings for the Demons, allowing just three earned runs. He struck out five, and walked one. Kegan D’Aleo threw the other 1 1/3 innings, giving up no earned runs. He had five strikeouts.
Durango’s four-run first inning was put together thanks to back-to-back doubles by Gage Mestas and Genualdi, as well as singles by Gavin Mestas and Gus Kidd.
(Tom Hoganson)
Montrose slowly chipped away, starting with Dustin Boone’s solo home run in the top of the second, and a double by Jared Miller and a single by Boone in the top of the fourth. That cut the lead to 5-2.
Durango responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-2, and the teams traded runs in the fifth to make it 8-3.
In the sixth, Montrose’s rally caught life. A two-run double by Dylan James put Montrose ahead 9-8, capping a six-run inning.
Durango is now 7-4, including 2-2 in the Southwestern League. Montrose (9-4, 0-2 SWL) entered the series riding a nine-game win streak.
