  • 2A boys soccer semis: Telluride and Crested Butte both rally to win

DENVER — Ian Enkema scored the winning goal in overtime to help send Telluride boys soccer to its first-ever championship game appearance.

The sixth-seeded Miners trailed 2-0 in the first half, but stormed back for the 3-2 win over No. 2 Fountain Valley in the Class 2A semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Enkema’s goal came three-and-a-half minutes into the first overtime. He beat the Fountain Valley goalkeeper to a ball in the left side of the box, and flicked it over his head and into the net for a winner.

Fountain Valley had grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Aly Kassam, including a penalty kick with 5:15 to play before halftime.

Telluride got an important answer less than three minutes later, when Andreas Moorman scored on a PK of his own. That made it 2-1 at the break, and things stayed that way as the second half wore on.

The Miners then tied the game at 2 on Brian Sosa’s goal off a corner kick with 11:03 to play. Sosa tucked home a loose ball after a diving save.

Then, in overtime, Enkema scored the winner to send Telluride to the title game, which is set for next Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

Crested Butte rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to advance to their first-ever championship game appearance.

The Titans tied the game at 1 less than five minutes into the second half when Gabi Marmolejo scored following a lot of pressure around the Denver Christian net.

The two teams continued to trade chances as the end of regulation drew near — including Denver Christian hitting the post — but it was Josias Navarrete, off an assist from Carlos Franco, who played the hero in the final minutes.

Navarrete tucked home a goal with 2:50 to play to put Crested Butte ahead 2-1, and the Titans held on.

Ryan Beattie scored for Denver Christian in the first half.

  • Early loss sparked Discovery Canyon’s surge to the 4A state volleyball tournament

COLORADO SPRINGS — When the 25th and final point was recorded for Discovery Canyon, the gym erupted with happiness.

Thursday, the Thunder will be among those competing at the state volleyball tournament at the Denver Coliseum. They got there via wins over Golden and Frederick in regionals where Discovery Canyon played host.

The Thunder has won 23 of their last 24 matches. The season-opening loss to Erie feels like years ago, but that may have been the single most important match that the Thunder played all year.

“Our first game of the season was a wake-up call,” coach Melissa Bravo said. “The group that we have this year is a good returning core from last year who qualified for state and I think they walked in thinking ‘we got this.’ Erie was a great wake-up call for us. It was a good loss.”

Entering the year, Discovery Canyon sat just outside the top-10 in the CHSAANow.com Class 4A volleyball preseason rankings. The loss certainly didn’t do much to boost the confidence of the Thunder, but they used it as motivation to work hard every day, every practice and every match.

The result was a staggering 15-match winning streak that boosted them up to No. 2 ahead of their showdown with No. 1 Lewis-Palmer. The defending 4A state champs handed the Thunder their only league loss of the year. It was also be the last loss for Discovery Canyon before running the table the rest of the way to the state tournament.

But the surge and the solid play all started with that first match of the year. That very first loss.

“I think we came out a little too nervous and let the first game pressure get to us,” junior Leah Lester said. “I think we needed that loss. It helped us get the momentum going to go on that winning streak.”

Another big reason for that streak is the talent on the floor for the Thunder. Lester is an all-around threat as she sits second on the team in kills, third in service aces and second in digs.

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Paytin Kramer has helped supplement the kill count, Sophie Boushell has been brilliant defensively and Hannah Pethtel and her 395 assists have set up multiple players for scoring opportunities.

And then there’s the big weapon on the front line. Ashten Prechtel and her 6-foot-5 frame gives Discovery Canyon a big advantage on the hitting side. Prechtel will play basketball at Stanford, but has enjoyed every minute of this season. She entered Saturday ranked 33rd in 4A with 191 kills, but it’s getting back to the Denver Coliseum that really mattered to her and her teammates.

“It means a lot especially since basketball is my first sport,” Prechtel said. “It’s really fun to come out with my volleyball team and play this well. We all get along really well and we have so much fun on and off the court.”

While they want to have fun this week, they have a clear goal in mind. Only one team state championship resides in a trophy case on the school’s campus. That was for boys golf in 2016. The volleyball team would love to head to Denver and win the school’s first girls team championship. Just getting back to the tournament isn’t enough for Bravo and her girls.

“Absolutely not,” she said. “We want to win state. We also know that takes one match at a time. Not looking past anybody, coming out of regionals last year, we know how important that is. But yeah, we want to win state. We’ll take it one match at a time, regardless of who’s across the net.”

Playing in 4A means that it could be Lewis-Palmer on the other end of that net. That doesn’t make any difference to Discovery Canyon. They know in order to be the best, they have to beat the best.

If anything, they’re excited to get another crack at the team that has won four of the last five championships. Winning regionals was just the start of that process.

“This is just the next step,” Lester said. “We plan to see Lewis-Palmer again. We want some redemption and we’re looking for a state title.”

The Thunder, and everyone else, don’t have to look further than Thursday for the start of that quest.

  • Pomona captures fourth-straight 5A state gymnastics title

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

THORNTON — The last time a Colorado prep team won four straight gymnastics titles in the highest classification, Gerald Ford was the President of the United States.

That is, until Thursday when Pomona captured state title No. 4 with a splendid veteran group. They outlasted Overland in the point tally, a regular contender, 187.900-186.475.

“I’m so happy for these seniors,” Panther coach Tracey Boychuk said. “It’s been kind of a pressure-filled year. We’ve had some injuries. Kaylie (Berens) was out today. She got hurt during warmups.”

Filling a hole left by Berens, the 2017 all-around champion, would be difficult for any team. But the others stepped up.

“The girls were all in and they were ready,” Boychuk said. “To go six-for-six on beam with no falls, they did an amazing job.”

As did Brooke Weins, runner-up in the all-around competition with a score of 38.525. She capped her career with a trio of top-2 finishes at the state meet, which included a championship in 2016.

For Pomona, the team chase was just as essential as any individual endeavor though.

“These seniors have said from the very beginning that they wanted four and were going to do everything they could to do that,” the proud coach said. “They left it all out there.”

The most recent program to win four state crowns in a row was Bear Creek from 1974-77.

Despite Pomona’s immense talent again with the likes of Weins, Mia Tims (fourth in all-around), and Kalise Newson (top four in three events), the individual all-around winner was from Lakewood: senior Amber Boll.

With first place showings in vault, uneven bars, and balance beam, and a second in floor exercise, Boll had a dominant performance with 39.125 points. She also tallied 39.000 at her regional meet last week.

“I can’t believe that this has actually happened,” Boll said. “It definitely had been a goal of mine.”

In her prep finale, Boll captured her first all-around championship. The Air Force Academy recruit was second as a sophomore and third as a junior.

A breakthrough in floor exercise (9.700) helped secure the title.

“I was really proud of my floor,” Boll said. “It brings a lot of honor. I can’t believe I can represent my school in this way.”

Pomona had a four-year streak of all-around champions entering the season, but Boll became the first Lakewood winner in program history.

  • Moore runs for four scores as No. 2 Pine Creek football tops Vista Ridge

COLORADO SPRINGS — Cashing in on mistakes is how successful football teams thrive when the temperatures start to dip and the games mean a little bit more.

The temperature had certainly dipped Thursday night at District 20 Stadium. But at the end of the night Pine Creek looked to be thriving.

The Class 4A No. 2 Eagles scored 21 points off turnovers and rode to a 41-21 win over Vista Ridge. It wrapped up an undefeated league season for Pine Creek who now turns the focus to the 4A playoffs which will begin next week.

“You enjoy the victory we had today,” coach Todd Miller said. “We won a conference championship and that needs to be cherished because that doesn’t come in every man’s football or sporting career. We go on from there and it’s one game at a time.”

After taking an early 7-0 lead, the Wolves (5-5 overall, 3-2 Southern) tied the game on a six-yard touchdown run from Emmanuel Garcia. And for a brief moment it looked like Vista Ridge was ready to seize momentum.

A defensive stop forced the Eagles (9-1, 5-0) to punt and put the ball back in the hands of what looked like an efficient Vista Ridge offense.

Then in true Pine Creek fashion, a big defensive play got things going for the Eagles. A tipped ball was picked off by Jackson Grier and his effort was rewarded by running back David Moore III who punched one in from two yards out for his second touchdown of the night.

“It was just one play, but the defense played great as whole all night,” Grier said. “It just gave us a mood swing.”

On the very next drive, the Eagles forced another turnover and this time it was quarterback Gavin Herberg finding the end zone with his feet. In just over a minute, two Vista Ridge turnovers had given Pine Creek a 14-point lead.

“We had a game plan,” Vista Ridge coach Jerimi Calip said. “We told guys we had to take what they give us and make sure we execute. We can’t have turnovers and we came out, didn’t take what they gave us and had turnovers. We didn’t do what we were supposed to do.”

Before the first half ended, Moore would add a 32-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 27-7. He added an 80-yard score early in the second half. His night ended with over 160 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Just like in most contests this year, Moore is not a bad weapon to have.

“We just go into every game thinking we’re going to win,” he said. “I trust coach so much. We’re just confident and we don’t underestimate our opponents.”

The Eagles now play the waiting game as they awaiting their playoff seed and opponent, both of which will be revealed Sunday. Miller has a team filled with experience even if a heavy load of those veterans are just juniors.

They’ve seen enough in their time at Pine Creek to understand what the playoff environment is about. Combined with the tough opponents they’ve faced this season they’re aware of what it takes to make a playoff run.

“We also think back to the state championship game,” Moore said. “We were down and we crumbled. We’re never going to crumble again and we’re going to step up and accept the challenge.”

Simply accepting the challenge is not enough. Thursday night was a glaring example of what it takes to win games in November. Or lose them if they’re not on the right side of the mistakes that can be made and capitalized on.

“It goes both ways. You can’t make mistakes against teams that are good and not expect them to put points on the board. So when they make mistakes, you have to capitalize this time of the year. We did a good job of that tonight.”

  • Dakota Ridge football remains in playoff hunt with win over Golden

LAKEWOOD — Dakota Ridge’s football team will be the biggest fans of rival Chatfield on Friday night at Jeffco Stadium.

“It’s going to be awful, but we are hoping for the best right now,” Dakota Ridge senior Josh Roybal said of rooting for Chatfield to defeat Bear Creek in the Class 4A Jeffco League finale.

Dakota Ridge (6-4, 4-1) took care of its business with a 34-17 victory over Golden on Thursday night at Trailblazer Stadium. The win gave the Eagles at least a share of the conference title, but the issue now is who will get the automatic bid for the 16-team 4A state tournament.

The Eagles would grab the automatic bid as the 4A Jeffco League champion if Chatfield defeats Bear Creek on Friday night at Jeffco Stadium. Dakota Ridge and rival Chatfield would finish tied for the league title, but the Eagles’ 31-21 head-to-head victory over the Chargers on Oct. 18 gives Dakota Ridge the tiebreaker and conference title.

“I’ll go down and help coach,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said joking about what he is willing to do to help rival Chatfield out Friday night. “I have a lot of respect for Bret (Chatfield coach Bret McGatlin). I just hope we maybe did enough to move up.”

Dakota Ridge sat No. 16 in the RPI rankings before the final regular-season games started Thursday night. It looks like Bear Creek is the only possible conference champ receiving an automatic bid from outside the top-16 that would bump out a top-16 RPI team.

If Bear Creek defeats Chatfield, the Bears would tie Dakota Ridge for the conference title and actually could bump the Eagles out of the No. 16 spot in the RPI. Bear Creek was No. 24 in the RPI while Chatfield is pretty safe on making the playoffs sitting at No. 12 in RPI heading into tomorrow night’s big conference game.

Golden senior Jack Walters (8) celebrates his pick-6 with teammate Travis Poole. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

“If we would have beat Bear Creek we wouldn’t have had this issue, but it happened,” Dakota Ridge senior Jered Garcia said referring to the 24-21 loss to the Bears on Oct. 4 that would allow Bear Creek to take the head-to-head tiebreaker for the Eagles. “We are dependent now on Chatfield. Hopefully they can get the job done and you’ll see us in the playoffs.”

Golden (5-5, 1-4) put an early damper on the playoff scenario for Dakota Ridge. The Demons jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with an 11-play, 65-yard opening scoring drive capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback David O’Connell.

On the Eagles’ first offensive snap, Dakota Ridge quarterback Ben Biffinger was intercepted by senior Jack Walters who returned it 42 yards for another Demons’ touchdown.

“This year we have battled every single game and battled to the end,” Golden coach Jared Yannacito said. “We weren’t going to change that this week.”

Dakota Ridge senior Ryan Kissinger (25) is able to defend a pass intended for Golden senior Jack Walters. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

However, Dakota Ridge regrouped and ended up outscoring the Demons 34-3 the rest of the way. The Eagles had five rushing touchdown and forced five Golden turnovers to rally for the victory.

“I was never really nervous. We’ve been down before,” Garcia said. “I knew we would battle back. We’ve done it multiple times this season. I trust all of my boys (offensive line) up front. I knew we would do it.”

Garcia was the workhorse for the Eagles’ offense with 29 carries for 226 yards and two touchdowns. His 48-yard run midway in the fourth quarter eventually set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Biffinger that put the Eagles up 27-17.

“I was really proud of our guys and how we ran the ball,” Woitalewicz said. “Jered Garcia is a phenomenal kid. For our offensive line to control the ball the way that they did was huge for us.”
