    Cherokee Trail enters the 5A regionals at 21-2. The Cougars will host No. 32 Denver East in the first round; No. 16 Douglas County and No. 17 Smoky Hill are also in their region.

    Other regional hosts include No. 2 Eaglecrest, No. 3 Fossil Ridge, No. 4 Loveland, No. 5 Legacy, No. 6 Brighton, No. 7 Columbine and No. 8 Rock Canyon.

    Defending champion Legend is seeded No. 13, and will play No. 20 Prairie View in the first round of the Loveland regional.

    In 4A, top-seeded Pueblo County is 21-2. The Hornets will host No. 32 Montrose, No. 16 Pueblo East and No. 17 Roosevelt in their region.

    Also hosting 4A regionals are: No. 2 Silver Creek, No. 3 Holy Family, No. 4 Golden, No. 5 Conifer, No. 6 Mountain View, No. 7 Erie and No. 8 Pueblo South.

    Mountain View is the defending champion, and will play No. 27 Evergreen in the first round.

    Strasburg, the defending champion, is 3A’s top seed at 17-5. The squad will host No. 16 Sterling and No. 17 Riverdale Ridge. This is the first time a team from Riverdale Ridge, in its first year as a CHSAA member, has ever qualified for the postseason.

  • Football roundup: No. 6 Burlington beats No. 5 Wray in 1A

    Class 1A’s North Central league features four teams ranked in this week’s top-10. So Friday’s league matchup between No. 5 Wray and No. 6 Burlington was of a little extra importance.

    Burlington came away with an important 19-8 win over Wray, thanks in part to two touchdown passes from Braden Witzel, and some stout defense.

    “It is a big win for us,” Burlington coach Glynn Higgs told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “I was really proud of our defense. Two or three times, they were down inside the 20. And we were able to keep them from putting points on the board. I was just really proud of the kids.”

    Taylor Scott opened the scoring for Burlington with a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After a Wray safety, Witzel threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Burton with 4:42 left in the second.

    The score remained that way until late in the fourth quarter. That’s when Wray cut it to 12-8 with 5:33 following an interception return for a touchdown.

    Witzel and Burton then hooked up again for a second time, this one from 30 yards with 35 seconds left, to account for the final margin.

    With the win, Burlington is now 1-0 in conference play — along with No. 1 Limon and No. 7 Holyoke, who also won on Friday night.

    3A: Niwot 20, Eagle Valley 14

    Niwot football is now 3-2 after a 20-14 win over Eagle Valley. The Cougars ended a 19-game losing streak earlier in the year.

    “Our kids have worked really, really hard, and it’s almost overwhelming at times for what they’ve sacrificed to try to get to this point,” coach Jeremy Lanter told the Scoreboard Show. “The rotating coaches they’ve had in that program, it’s nice to have some consistency and have some kids buy into that consistency.”

    On Friday, Julian Molina rushed for two touchdowns for the Cougars, and Eric Ruiz also scored on the ground.

    This is just the second time since 2008 that the team has won three games in a season.

    “It is so important,” Lanter said of winning games. “Especially when you’re trying everything you can to keep kids motivated and inspired when they know that they’re looking at a 19-game losing streak. Especially for them to be chipping away at that, and they continue to pick up the hammer and pound the stone, and try to give themselves the best opportunity. But winning helps. Winning doesn’t fix everything, but it certainly does help.”

    • 1A No. 3 Peyton improved to 5-0 with a 42-0 win over Ellicott. JD Hart rushed for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and also had a receiving score.
    • Luke McCaffrey threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another as 5A No. 2 Valor Christian shut out Castle View 35-0.
    • Denver East is now 5-0 in Metro 10 play, and 5-1 overall, after beating Westminster 13-7. The Angels host Smoky Hill next Friday in what could be a matchup of unbeatens in conference play, should Smoky win on Saturday.

    Kaufman on the matchup: Tonight is a matchup between two defending state champions that are in very different situations. Palmer Ridge has their three headed offensive monster of Ty Evans, Anthony Roberson, and Raef Ruel but has suffered a couple losses to teams ranked in the top 5 of their respective classifications.

    In those losses, Evans has thrown a combined 8 interceptions, so if this team is going to defend its 3A title, they need to get a little more balance offensively to take the pressure off of Evans

    Pueblo South meanwhile has had to replace nearly all of their key offensive contributors from their 4A State Championship team of 2017. In their 42-41 overtime loss to Discovery Canyon last week, Junior QB Logan Petit made great strides in his development, throwing for 240 yards and 3 TDs. This is a team that has gotten better each game and should look even better in a game that figures to be a shootout.

    On paper the football game has all the signs of a classic six-man scorefest with both teams averaging more than 60 points per contest.

This week though, the Spartans face their longest road trip of the season to this point as they look to go 5-0 in non-league action.

    Defense has been the key for Salida so far on the year, and expect them to use that to get things going in the right direction again in Cedaredge.

To do that, they have to take on a Centauri team which is coming off of an appearance in the state championship game.

    Buena Vista will look to again assert their offense in this one, using speed and timing as well as smart play from quarterback Parker Johnson to earn the win. Don’t sleep on the Demon’s defense either, as the defensive line for Buena Vista will get some pressure on the Falcons quarterback.

  • Football roundup: Eaglecrest wins top-10 showdown against Highlands Ranch

    Eaglecrest started its season off with a big win over a top-10 foe, beating Highlands Ranch 49-35 in a Class 5A clash.

    The Raptors, who led 28-14 at halftime, opened the third quarter with a 17-play, seven-minute scoring drive. That put them up 35-14.

    “We executed really well on that drive,” first-year Eaglecrest coach Dustin Delaney told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “That really just demoralizes people when you do that. That’s the kind of football we want to play.”

    Eaglecrest would stretch its lead to 49-21 midway through the fourth quarter before Highlands Ranch scored two late touchdowns to cut it to a 14-point game again.

    “We didn’t keep our intensity for the whole time, and kind of let the game get closer than it should’ve been, quite honestly,” Delaney said. “That’s youth. There’s a lot of new starters from the team they had last year, so we’ve got to get them broken in. This was a good game to do it, and get ready for our real tough games down the road.”

    Highlands Ranch actually drew first blood with a touchdown early in the first quarter. Eaglecrest responded with a touchdown of its own on the next drive, and then senior Elijah Anderson-Taylor forced a fumble on a sack that set up another touchdown.

    The Raptors led the rest of the way.

    Eaglecrest never punted, but did turn the ball over six times.

    “We’ve got a lot of things to work on, and hopefully we can get them fixed for next week,” Delaney said.

    Otis took down the defending champions with a convincing victory in a battle of Bulldogs.

    Peetz actually led 28-25 at halftime, but Otis outscored Peetz 27-8 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

    “We pretty much shot ourselves in the foot that whole first half,” Otis coach Paul Griese told the Scoreboard Show. “You know, missed assignments; we’ve got to work on some tackling. But you know what? We were playing the returning state champs, and we were tight. We were extremely tight.”

    3A: (3) Pueblo East 47, (6) Roosevelt 8

    Pueblo East yet again looks ready to contend for a state championship.

    The Eagles rolled through the top-10 matchup, scoring the game’s first 40 points.

    Quarterback Luc Andrada was 12-of-14 with 263 yards and five touchdowns passing, and also rushed for a score, according to Jeff Bersch of the Pueblo Chieftain. Pueblo East won three-straight state championships prior to last season.

    4A: (6) Fruita Monument 10, (9) Pueblo West 6

    In a tight defensive battle, Fruita Monument held Pueblo West off the scoreboard following a touchdown on the Cyclones’ initial drive.

    The Wildcats went ahead for good on Jacob Burns’ 1-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes to play in the second quarter, per Anthony Sandstrom of the Pueblo West View.

    “Our defense flew around, was really aggressive at them, and kind of cut them off,” first-year Fruita Monument coach Cameron Russ told the Scoreboard Show. “They did the same thing to us, so it turned into a ground game — ground-and-pound.”

    3A: Holy Family 19, (4) Pueblo South 7

    Holy Family knocked off the defending 4A champions, who have moved down to 3A for this cycle.

    Kyle Helbig had two interceptions on defense, including a big one late in the third quarter, according to Jon Yunt of Holy Family. He also had a receiving touchdown.

    • Broomfield, No. 3 in 5A, beat rival Legacy (a 5A team) 55-14. It’s Broomfield’s first Mayor’s Cup victory since 2011. The game is annually the season-opener for both teams.
    • 2A No. 7 Resurrection Christian beat Sterling 24-3. “The defense was just outstanding,” first-year Cougars coach Jeff Van Winkle told the Scoreboard Show. “The defense really stepped up.”
    • Bayfield, the reigning 2A champion who is ranked No. 1 in the preseason, crossed the border to beat Farmington (N.M.) 54-13. It was their first meeting since 1947.
    • Durango’s Dawson Marcum had a 99-yard touchdown run in his eighth-ranked team’s 34-6 win over Pagosa Springs.
    • Fairview beat Boulder 42-7, its 11th-straight win in the rivalry game.
    • Smoky Hill beat Overland 19-0 to capture the Wagon Wheel. Overland had won the previous six meetings between the two rivals.
    • Fort Collins beat city rival Rocky Mountain 9-3.
    • In the first game under new coach Rod Sherman, Arapahoe rolled over Adams City 52-6.
    • Battle Mountain used a goal-line stand to win against Middle Park, 14-7.
    • Aspen upset 1A No. 5 Meeker 38-26. The Skiers were 8-2 a year ago.
    • Valor Christian beat Faith Lutheran (Nev.) 35-0, giving new coach Ed McCaffrey his first win as a head coach. Luke McCaffrey accounted for three total touchdowns.
