  • Football rankings: Chatfield takes over top spot in Class 4A

    (Lance Wendt/LanceWendt.com)

If no one was paying attention to Chatfield before, they are now.

Following a 50-39 win over Pine Creek in Week 1 and a 53-7 win over Palmer in Week 2, the Chargers have earned the right to be the No. 1 team in the Class 4A CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Chatfield is one of two new No. 1 teams this week.

The 4A rankings received a little bit of a shakeup as a Pine Creek win over Windsor lifted the Eagles to No. 3 this week.

The Wizards fell to No. 4 as a result of their Saturday loss.

Ponderosa is the only new team to break into the 4A rankings this week.

Sedgwick County is the other new No. 1 this week, taking the top spot in the 8-man rankings for the second time this year.

Sangre de Cristo comes in at No. 8 and is the only new team to the 8-man poll this week.

Pomona hangs on to the top spot in the 5A rankings thanks a weekend win over Fountain-Fort Carson.

Fairview made the biggest 5A jump of the week to land at No. 7. That’s three spots better from where the Knights were a week ago.

There were no new teams in the 5A rankings this week.

After a thrilling win over Pueblo West, Pueblo East remains the No. 1 team in the 3A rankings by taking 12 of 13 first-place votes.

The most turnover of the week belongs to the 3A class as it saw three new teams break into the top 10.

Lewis-Palmer lands at No. 7, Silver Creek comes in at No. 9 and Erie rounds out the 3A top 10 at No. 10.

Kent Denver remains the No. 1 team in 2A after getting Scott Yates win No. 307 of his career.

The entire top five from last week’s rankings remained intact as everyone except for No. 2 Resurrection Christian (bye) notched wins.

Weld Central is the lone team to break into the 2A top 10, coming in at No. 9.

Buena Vista hangs on to the No. 1 spot in the 1A rankings. No. 2 Paonia and No. 3 Strasburg also held firm in their positions.

Limon jumped from No. 6 to No. 4 this week.

Ellicott (No. 9) and Cedaredge (No. 10) are the two newcomers to the 1A rankings.

A bye week resulted in Fleming hanging on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings.

Stratton/Liberty (No. 5) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 7) each jumped three spots from their rankings last week.

There were no new teams in the 6-man poll.

  • Grandview’s Brie Oakley wins cross country’s Liberty Bell with course record

LITTLETON — Brie Oakley couldn’t quite believe it.

“I saw my time and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I broke 17.’”

The Grandview senior, the Class 5A state runner-up to Lauren Gregory in cross country last fall, claimed the win in round one of a showdown between the big schools’ distance goliaths on Friday at the Liberty Bell Invitational.

The two pushed each other to monumental heights in the Division 1 race at Heritage High School, eclipsing Jordyn Colter’s 17:00 course record from 2012 easily as Oakley crossed the line in 16:44 and Gregory in 16:52.

Oakley, donning the blue and black of the Grandview Wolves for the first time last school year, added another record-setting performance to her resume. She shattered Boulder High legend Melody Fairchild’s 5A state track meet record in the 3,200 with a 10:33, while also claiming the 1,600.

In attempting to unseat Gregory, a Fort Collins harrier trying to become one of the only four-time state champions in the sport, Oakley slipped away from Gregory’s grasp after two miles of the 3.1.

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
    Brie Oakley. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

“The second mile we broke away,” Oakley said. “Before the third mile, I knew I just needed to go now. I could feel myself breaking away.”

Even at altitude, the tandem ended up with new high-water marks nationally for 2016, passing Ashton Endsley’s (Abilene, TX) 16:56.

“It feels really surreal,” said Oakley, who ran 47 seconds quicker than her previous lifetime best.

Grandview was also the highest Colorado team finisher in Division 1 with 138 points, good for third place behind Jackson Hole’s (Wyo.) 75 and Albuquerque Academy’s (N.M.) 133.

In Division 2, the defending state champion Broomfield Eagles buried the girls field with 39 points. Madison Mooney, a new Eagle who transferred from Horizon, spread her wings and took off from everyone to a winning time of 17:49. She was over 20 seconds ahead of ThunderRidge’s Shae Henley (18:12) and teammate Ivy Gonzales (18:17).

“I’m trying to place a lot higher at state this year,” said Mooney, whose sister, Megan, competes for Florida State University. “I’m going for top five. The course is definitely really difficult. I’m more of a flat-course runner, but after today I know that I can push myself to go to that limit.”

The Silver Creek boys also doubled up on Division 2 titles as Brock Dykema (15:58) won individually, while teammates James Lee (2nd, 16:04) and John Moroney (4th, 16:07) had his back during a comfortable 39-91 victory over Broomfield.

“During the homestretch I was just trying to kick as hard as I could, because I didn’t know where my teammates were behind me,” Dykema said. “I always have to be scared of that, because they’re good too.”

Thomas Chaston (15:57) claimed first in the Division 3 race as his team, Cheyenne Mountain, got past Evergreen 64-85 for the win. Valor Christian’s Keely Jones (18:51) was victorious in Division 3, but Roosevelt (82) got the better of Steamboat Springs (85) and Valor (89) in the team race.

Custer County’s Jerald Taylor, from Class 2A, was wildly impressive in winning Division 4 in a blistering 15:40, the fifth quickest time of the day behind only four top-flight competitors in Division 1. Cole Sprout of Faith Christian, perhaps one of the nation’s better freshmen, was second in 16:00.

Kent Denver’s Sam Schaffer (18:53) scurried away from Buena Vista’s Annie Hughes (18:58) to win the Division 4 girls race, while Holy Family swept the team titles with ease.

  • Football rankings: Three new No. 1 teams atop polls

    (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)
Pomona is the new No. 1 team in 5A football. (Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Three new schools are staking their claim as the No. 1 teams in their respective classes of this week’s CHSAANow.com football rankings.

Pomona (Class 5A), Kent Denver (2A) and Dayspring Christian (8-man) all come in as the top teams in the polls after sitting lower in the preseason rankings.

Pomona moves into the top spot after beating Mullen 28-21 in Zero Week. The Panthers lost at Glynn Academy (Ga.) Friday, but that did not affect their standing to Colorado voters.

Mullen jumps one spot to No. 2 after an impressive win over Valor Christian and Grandview lands at No. 3 after a 30-7 win over Chaparral.

After a 0-2 start, defending 5A champion Valor Christian slipped to No. 6.

Windsor remains atop the 4A rankings after a 33-21 win over Vista Ridge to start the season. The Wizards will have a top-10 match-up this week against No. 7 Pine Creek, who lost to No. 3 Chatfield on Friday.

The Chargers are new to the rankings this week along with Pueblo South (No. 6) and Monarch (No. 8).

After an impressive win over Longmont to start its season, defending 3A champion Pueblo East remains at No. 1 in the 3A rankings.

Fort Morgan jumps one spot to No. 2 and Discovery Canyon lands at No. 3 this week.

A 1-1 start has Durango as the lone newcomer to the 3A poll. The Demons come in at No. 10.

Along with win No. 306, Kent Denver coach Scott Yates is also the man behind the Sun Devils team that now resides at the top of the 2A rankings.

Resurrection Christian is sitting right behind them at No. 2, jumping a staggering six spots this week. With four first-place votes, La Junta is sitting firmly at No. 3.

Eaton (No. 9) and Moffat County (No. 10) are the two teams who join the rankings for the first time this season.

In 1A, Buena Vista still holds the No. 1 spot, but Paonia continues to nip on the Demons’ heels as they sit at No. 2 and are only two points behind the defending champs.

Strasburg (No. 3) and Meeker (No. 7) are the 1A teams that made the biggest from the preseason rankings, each improving their position by three spots.

At No. 9, Rye is the only newcomer to the 1A poll.

With six of the 10 first-place votes cast this week, Dayspring Christian is the new No. 1 in the 8-man rankings.

Sargent takes over the No. 2 spot and despite starting 2-0, Sedgwick County drops two spots to No. 3.

Fresh behind getting Chris Brown his 307th career win, West Grand breaks into the 8-man polls at No. 8. Haxtun (No. 9) and Holly (No. 10) are also new to the rankings this week.

Kit Carson hangs on to the top spot in the 6-man rankings. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 with a 30-22 win over Pawnee this weekend.

La Veta (No. 3) and Cotopaxi (No. 7) each jumped three spots this week.

Sierra Grande (No. 6) and Cheyenne Wells (No. 10) are the two new teams in the 6-man poll.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Well, welcome to the 2016 season, Gavin Mestas.

The Durango junior was all over the field in his team’s 21-20 win against Class 2A No. 4 Delta in Zero Week on Friday night.

A wide receiver, defensive back and kicker, Mestas did the following on Friday night:

That last feat earned him an entry into the state record book. Mestas is the 22nd player in the history of the sport to return a kickoff at least 99 yards, and he is now tied for the ninth-longest return ever.

Mestas had 241 yards and three touchdowns receiving, and 48 tackles and four interceptions on defense last season as the Demons reached the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Durango has moved down to 3A this season.

Kent Denver gave coach Scott Yates his 305th career win. He is now one away from tying the all-time wins record.

West Grand coach Chris Brown is currently tied with Pat Panek at 306 career wins. West Grand begins its season next week.

This was the first-ever varsity game for Prospect Ridge Academy.

The Cougars have now won 14 games in a row — the longest active streak in the state. Buena Vista (1A) and Pueblo East (3A) also enter the 2016 season with 13-game winning streaks, but neither team plays in Zero Week.
    • In 2A, No. 8 Resurrection Christian had 23 unanswered points as the Cougars beat No. 9 Sterling 34-6.
    • In 8-man, a top-10 matchup between No. 2 Akron and No. 8 Granada didn’t exactly live up to the hype as the Rams rolled 59-0.
    • Bayfield had its 12-game winning streak snapped with a 19-0 loss to San Juan (Utah).
    • 3A No. 2 Roosevelt, runner up a season ago, opened its season with a 39-0 win against Thornton.
    • Grand Junction Central nearly pulled off an upset, but 3A No. 6 Palisade held on with a 31-26 win.
