  • Defending champs top 5 of 7 preseason football rankings

Defending champions rule the preseason football rankings, save for two classifications.

Pine Creek (Class 4A), Pueblo East (3A), Brush (2A), Paonia (1A) and Caliche (8-man) all won championships last season — and each one sat atop their respective classfication when the preseason CHSAANow.com Football Polls were released on Monday.

Only Valor Christian (5A) and Fleming (6-man) are preseason No. 1 teams without being a defending champion. Valor was the runner-up in 5A last season, while Fleming was a semifinalists in 6-man.

The 5A voters were pretty determined that the top three teams this season would be Valor, Cherry Creek and Pomona. Each team received at least one first-place vote, and the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field by more than 50 points each.

Valor got nine of the 15 first-place votes and totaled 140 points. Cherry Creek, last season’s 5A champion, is No. 2 with four first-place votes and 134 total points. Pomona got one first-place vote and is No. 3 at 123 total points.

At No. 4 is Regis Jesuit and new coach Dan Filleman. Perennial contender Columbine rounds out the top five.

Fairview, led by senior star Carlo Kemp, checks in at No. 6; returning semifinalist Grandview is No. 7; and Fountain-Fort Carson is No. 8.

Ralston Valley, another semifinalist, opens at No. 9, and Doherty rounds out the ranking at No. 10.

The 4A ranking featured the lone unanimous top-ranked team in Pine Creek. The two-time defending champion Eagles, who feature Nebraska commit JoJo Domann, got all 12 first-place votes and totaled 120 points.

Longmont, the 4A runner-up, is No. 2; Dakota Ridge is third; and Falcon (No. 4) and Denver South (No. 5) round out the top five.

Pueblo East is No. 1 in 3A’s preseason poll. (Mark Adams)

In 3A, defending champion Pueblo East returns a stacked roster, but will have a new coach in interim head Lee Meisner. Even still, the Eagles got 13 of the 14 first-place votes in 3A, and lead the ranking.

Fort Morgan got the other first-place vote and is No. 2 to begin the year. Evergreen is third, Holy Family is fourth and Palisade is No. 5.

Brush, another team looking to defend its title, led the 2A poll with seven of the 10 first-place votes. The Beetdiggers, too, have a new coach: Reid Kahl. Kent Denver, last year’s runner-up, opens at No. 2.

In the 1A ranking, Paonia, the defending champion, received eight of the 12 first-place votes. Buena Vista is No. 2.

The 8-man poll was interesting. Defending champion Caliche leads the way at No. 1 in the preseason, but four different teams received first-place votes — including Dayspring Christian at No. 3, which got three top votes. Caliche and No. 2 Norwood each got two first-place votes, and Granada got one.

Fleming got four first-place votes to lead the 6-man ranking, while No. 2 Eads and No. 3 Arickaree/Woodlin each received one. Arickaree/Woodlin won last season’s title.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

    Complete rankings are below.

The 2015 all-state baseball teams honor the best players in the sport as judged by the leagues and coaches. They are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues and coaches, and then a vote of coaches. Players had to be first-team all-league in order to be on the all-state ballot.

Players and coaches of the year were also selected by a vote of the coaches.

  • Wheat Ridge takes over as 4A baseball’s No. 1 team

Wheat Ridge made a huge leap in taking over the top spot in the Class 4A baseball poll this week.

The Famers, No. 6 a week ago, beat then-No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 5 Green Mountain, and No. 2 Evergreen as part of a 4-0 run last week.

They received five of the 12 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, but it was the most any team got this week. Wheat Ridge also totalled 105 points, placing them just ahead of D’Evelyn, which got four first-place votes and 101 points.

Lewis-Palmer, which received two first-place tallies, is No. 3 in 4A this week. Evergreen dropped to No. 4, and Pueblo West completes the top-five.

The 4A poll added two newcomers: No. 6 Erie and No. 7 Palisade.

Green Mountain (No. 8), Ponderosa (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10) round out the 4A poll.

The 5A ranking also saw a lot of change this week.

Cherokee Trail led three newcomers at No. 7 in the poll. Pine Creek (No. 9) and Legend (No. 10) also joined.

Rocky Mountain stayed atop the ranking with 11 of the 15 first-place votes.

The three other No. 1s also remained the same: Eaton (3A), Rye (2A) and Eads (1A).

Neither the 3A poll, nor 1A poll, had any newcomers this week. 2A added Swink (No. 9).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

These will serve as the final polls of the season, as 1A’s regular season ended last Saturday, 2A’s is set to close this Saturday, and 3A, 4A, and 5A will end next Tuesday.

Complete rankings for all classes are below.

The brackets for the Class 5A and 4A boys and girls basketball state tournaments were released on Sunday.

Overland, Regis Jesuit, Eaglecrest and ThunderRidge each earned No. 1 seeds in the 5A boys tournament. Each of those teams, save for Eaglecrest, were ranked No. 1 in CHSAANow.com’s poll at some point this season.

No. 2 seeds in 5A boys include Mountain Vista, Legend, Dakota Ridge and Rangeview.

The Continental League, viewed by many as the toughest in the state, ended up with six teams getting first-round byes, including No. 3 seeds Chaparral and Rock Canyon. The other No. 3s are Fort Collins and George Washington.

Also getting byes in the first round were No. 4 seeds Cherokee Trail, Rampart, Grand Junction and Fossil Ridge.

Defending champion Denver East drew a No. 6 seed, and opens at home against No. 11 Fairview.

On the 5A girls side, Highlands Ranch, Broomfield, ThunderRidge and Monarch earned the No. 1 seeds.

The No. 2s are Cherry Creek, Rampart, Lakewood and Arapahoe.

Also receiving first round byes are No. 3 seeds Grand Junction, Ralston Valley, Grandview and Denver East; as well as No. 4 seeds Legacy, Westminster, Pine Creek and Fossil Ridge.

Two-time defending 5A champion Regis Jesuit is a No. 6 seed, and plays No. 11 Pomona in the first round.

In 4A girls, Canon City, Pueblo West, D’Evelyn and Holy Family were the No. 1 seeds. The No. 2s are Pueblo South, Palisade, Sand Creek and Valor Christian.

Defending champion Mesa Ridge is a No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 Silver Creek to open the tournament.

The 4A boys field is led by No. 1 seeds Longmont, Golden, Holy Family and Denver South.

Valor Christian, Air Academy, Sierra and Pueblo West are No. 2 seeds.

Pueblo East, the defending champion, missed the 4A field.

  • 4A girls basketball ranking adds three newcomers

There are three new teams in the Class 4A girls basketball rankings this week.

No. 7 Pueblo South, No. 8 Silver Creek and No. 10 Palisade were all unranked a week ago, but garnered enough votes to break into CHSAANow.com’s poll.

All five No. 1 teams stayed the same this week: ThunderRidge (5A), Canon City (4A), Sterling (3A), Peyton (2A) and Kit Carson (1A).

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. These will be the final polls of the regular season.

  • Football roundup: Cherry Creek moves to 5A semifinals

Cherry Creek beat Regis Jesuit, and returned to the Class 5A semifinals for the first time since 2008.

D.J. Luke ran for three touchdowns, Milo Hall had two, and the No. 1-seeded Bruins cruised to a 49-21 win over the No. 2 Raiders.

Cherry Creek was last in the semifinals during the 2008 season, when the Bruins advanced to the title game, but lost to Mullen 20-16. The Mustangs were coached by Dave Logan at that time. Logan is now the head coach for Cherry Creek.

On Friday, Cherry Creek actually trailed 7-0 before the Bruins ran off 28 unanswered points to grab control of the game.

The Bruins advance to play Ralston Valley, another No. 1 seed, which handled Fairview 71-29 on Friday night.

That semifinal game will be hosted by Ralston Valley, likely at the NAAC on Friday or Saturday.

    4A: (1) Pine Creek 24, (8) Windsor 7

The defending champions jumped out to a 17-7 lead at halftime, and didn’t need to do much else in advancing to the 4A semifinals for the third time in four years.

Quarterback Tommy Lazzaro had two rushing touchdowns for the Eagles, and running back Josh Odom had a 1-yard score.

With the win, Pine Creek extended its winning streak to 23 games, as well as 25 games against 4A teams.

Pine Creek’s previous two trips to the semifinals have ended in wins. The Eagles beat Monarch 20-0 in 2011, then lost to Valor Christian in the championship game. Of course, last season Pine Creek won the 4A title.

Pine Creek moves on to play Falcon in the semifinals. That game will be hosted by Falcon.

    3A: (4) Pueblo East 28, (12) Palisade 14

It was 14-7 at halftime, but Pueblo East expanded its lead to 28-7 before the third quarter ended and the Eagles didn’t look back.

Quarterback Daniel Martin had a hand in all four touchdowns for Pueblo East, passing for one score and rushing for three more.

After a 3-3 start, Pueblo East has now won its last six games.

Pueblo East gets the winner of Discovery Canyon and Delta, who play at 1 p.m. Saturday.
