WESTMINSTER — One checked-off goal for Lakewood’s girls basketball team was worn on postgame t-shirts Tuesday night.

Each Lakewood player sported a Class 5A Jeffco League championship t-shirt as they exited Standley Lake High School. The Tigers (21-1, 15-0 in league) officially clinched the conference title with a 56-37 victory against Standley Lake.

“It means the world to me,” Lakewood senior captain Jessica Brooks said. “When I first came in we didn’t win very much. Now we have just lost one. It just feels so awesome that we won (league) my senior year.”

It’s the first girls hoops conference title for Lakewood since winning 5A Jeffco in 2008. Ralston Valley had won the 5A Jeffco League four times over the past five seasons, including three in a row before the Tigers cemented themselves as the class of the conference this season.

“It means so much from where we were four years ago, winning three games, to winning a league championship,” Lakewood coach Chris Poisson said. “It’s extremely special. This group is special.”

Lakewood struggled to a 3-20 record during its 2009-10 campaign, Poisson’s second year coaching the Tigers. Lakewood, No. 3 in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings, has now reeled off back-to-back 20-plus win seasons.

However, the Tigers aren’t done yet.

“Our focus is to get a good seed. Get some home games for the playoffs. Hopefully make it to the Denver Coliseum,” said Brooks, who scored a game-high 23 points Tuesday. “We are just so pumped and ready to handle what is coming at us.”

Standley Lake gave Lakewood all it could handle in the first half. The Gators (8-13, 4-11) actually were tied 19-19 at halftime.

Juniors Caylie Hartman (13 points) and Casey Torbet (eight points) kept the Gators competitive against the Tigers, who have won 10 straight since losing a non-league game Jan. 13 against Castle View.

“It was a good first half. We followed our game plan, stuck with it,” Standley Lake coach Denise Lopez said. “We played with a lot of confidence.”

After struggling with its perimeter shooting in the first half, getting the ball to Brooks and sophomore McKenna Bishop in the paint was the offensive focus in the third quarter. Brooks and Bishop combined for 13 points in the third.

“Jess (Brooks) was huge,” Poisson said. “She said, ‘I was taking over the boards.’ Standley was so physical. Good thing for Jess. That gave us the lift.”

The Tigers went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter to get some distance between the upset-minded Gators.

“The first half our intensity was just so low,” Brooks said. “After halftime we came out strong and that is what’s important. We had to pound it down low.”

Lakewood sophomore Mackenzie Forrest found her shooting touch in the second half. Forrest finished with 20 points, just over her season average of 19.4 coming into the second to last game of the regular season.

The Tigers will close out their regular season on the road against Dakota Ridge at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lakewood will find out what seed it will be for the state tournament on Sunday, when the 5A state brackets are released.

Standley Lake finishes off its regular season at 5:30 p.m. Friday with a home game against Pomona. The Gators are hoping their young squad will see their name in the bracket come Sunday.

“We do have a lot of young girls who are getting good experience against good teams,” Lopez said. “To see what this level looks like and what it takes is good for us.”

  • No. 7 Columbine hockey rallies to beat Standley Lake

LITTLETON — Coming on the heels of a blowout loss to Regis Jesuit, Columbine’s hockey team looked a bit lethargic in the early going Wednesday night against Standley Lake.

The Gators jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first period, capitalizing on a shorthanded goal, and the seventh-ranked Rebels entered the locker room at the first intermission needing a pick-me-up.

“We just told the guys they need to figure out how to play a complete game. We haven’t really had a strong full-three period effort for a long time,” Columbine coach Chris Gassman said. “We just said, ‘It’s about time to start showing everybody in the league that we can be a contender.’”

The Rebels did just that, taking the lead with two second-period goals in a span of 53 seconds en route to a 5-2 victory over the Gators at Edge Ice Arena. The victory keeps Columbine (8-3-1, 5-2 in the Foothills League) in the mix with the league contenders headed into a big game Friday against No. 5 Cherry Creek.

Junior Jacob Seibold led the way with his first hat trick of the season, and Logan Seibold had assists on each of Jacob’s three goals.

“It was vital that we got this win,” Jacob Seibold said. “We’re looking to go into the next game and take that one too and just keep going from there.”

After going 5-0-1 before the holiday break, Columbine had just two victories in its previous five games and was coming off a 6-0 loss to the Raiders. Standley Lake (5-5-1, 3-3) took control quickly Wednesday, with Topher Carroll scoring off the assist from Andrew Coca.

Seibold knotted it up less than a minute later, but with Columbine on the power play, Coca sprinted down the ice on a breakaway, deked to his right and beat Rebels goalie Ashton Opperman to the left to make it 2-1.

Seibold said Columbine hasn’t been a great first-period team, but the players realized they needed to turn things around.

“We knew we came out slow,” he said. “The coaches left the locker room and the leaders on the team hyped up the team and we just came out with a bunch of energy.”

Seibold tied it up again with 10:54 left in the second period, and 53 seconds later it was senior Mehedi Boudhaouia’s turn to find the back of the net. Standley Lake picked up a major for checking from behind, and within a minute the Rebels had a 5-on-3 advantage. Andrew Wright made it 4-2 with a power-play goal.

The Gators were whistled for eight penalties over the final two periods and fought off two more 5-on-3 situations, but Seibold added a power-play goal late in the third period to wrap things up. Opperman made a number of stops to deny Standley Lake over the final 45-plus minutes.

“They’re a good team and we just had to stay poised,” Seibold said. “We had to stay disciplined and we just worked on getting the puck in the net.”

The junior now has 11 goals on the season and Gassman said the Rebels tend to go as he does.

“Jake kind of started out a little bit slow but he started to pick it up a little bit, figuring out the type of leader he can be on this team,” Gassman said. “When he decides to play the whole team kind of follows him. That’s the type of (game) we need out of him every night.”

Standley Lake visits No. 3 Monarch on Friday and No. 8 Dakota Ridge on Jan. 31, part of a stretch of five-consecutive games against ranked opponents. Columbine plays the Eagles on Jan. 29.

The team has long since surpassed last season’s total of five wins, but the Rebels aren’t resting on their laurels.

“We are proud of what we’ve done, but we always try to say that we’re only as good as the last game we played,” Gassman said. “We played pretty well at the beginning and got a few wins under our belts early and kind of got a little comfortable, maybe a little complacent.

“We’ve been kind of fighting that back the last week or so.”

  • Dakota Ridge boys basketball wins sixth game in a row by edging Standley Lake

LITTLETON — It was clearly a team effort Tuesday night for Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball team in its Class 5A Jeffco League battle against Standley Lake.

Dakota Ridge (7-1, 2-0 in league) ran its winning streak to six games with a 56-50 victory over the Gators (6-4, 1-2). The key for the Eagles was a balanced scoring attack, led by seniors Jake Flores (12 points) and Jake Jones (11 points).

“I think we’ve almost had a different leading scorer almost every single game, which is good,” Dakota Ridge coach Curi Yutzy said of eight different players scoring in the conference win. “We have a nice balanced attack. We have a lot of guys who contribute.”

A lot of defensive pressure early by Dakota Ridge led to some easy buckets. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed.

“We worked on trying to get a lot of ball pressure on,” Yutzy said on counteracting Standley Lake’s size advantage. “Obviously, we started on an 8-0 run and that was nice.”

Flores scored on a driving layup with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Eagles their largest lead of the night, 48-36. However, one of the premier scorers in the state wouldn’t allow the Gators to go quietly.

Standley Lake senior Marcus Asmus kept the Gators above water for the majority of the night while pouring in a game-high 35 points.

“(Asmus) has worked so hard in the offseason,” Standley Lake coach Mike Puccio said his 6-foot-7 senior who drained three 3-pointers to go along with a solid inside game. “He went from strictly a post guy to a guy who has really worked on his game. It’s a nice story.”

Standley Lake’s 6-foot-8 senior Dylan Critchfield finished with six points, while juniors Jeremy Minnick, Lukas Gaudermann and sophomore Eric Turner each hit a 3-pointer to wrap up the scoring for the Gators.

Tuesday night’s matchup featured two head coaches that are Jeffco products. Yutzy, a 2000 graduate of Chatfield High School, is in his sixth year at the helm of Dakota Ridge’s boys basketball program. Puccio, a 2000 graduate of Green Mountain High School, is in also in his sixth season as the head coach at Standley Lake.

“Curi was a great player and he is doing a great job here,” Puccio said. “They play great. They are hard to guard. I like that team a lot.”

Yutzy and Puccio played against each other in high school and when both were at Division II college programs. They actually played together for a semipro basketball team — Colorado Crossover — eight years ago before both got their head coaching gigs.

“Puccio is a wonderful coach. He gets the most out of his kids every single year,” Yutzy said. “He is a heck of a coach and a heck of a person.”

Dakota Ridge continues conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, when it host area rival Columbine (3-6, 1-1 in league).

“We’ve done a lot of great things, but we still have a lot more to do,” Flores said. “We’ve got a lot of room to grow. We can still get a lot better.”

The Rebels played an extremely challenging non-league schedule that featured three 5A teams currently ranked in the top 10 of the CHSAANow.com poll, along with 4A’s top-ranked Valor Christian. Columbine showed it could be in the mix for a league title after handing Standley Lake its first league defeat coming off winter break Jan. 4. The Gators were outscored 31-18 in the fourth quarter in the loss to the Rebels.

“We’ve got to do some things better,” Puccio said. “The effort was there tonight, minus some spots in the first quarter. I thought the guys played really hard tonight.”

Standley Lake’s next contest is at home against Arvada West (6-3, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
