  • Football roundup: Doherty knocks off No. 6 ThunderRidge for first win

Brian Mosley rushed for three touchdowns to help Doherty football pull off a big upset of previously unbeaten and sixth-ranked ThunderRidge on Friday night.

“We knew this was going to be a four-quarter fight, and it came down to the last minute of the game,” Doherty coach Jeff Krumlauf told CHSAANow. “ThunderRidge is truly a top-10 program in the state right now. They have some special kids and some great coaches. For us to be down by 14 and sustain a course was huge for us on a high level.”

The Spartans entered the week winless at 0-4, but had played the second-toughest schedule in the state according to the RPI, with losses to Cherry Creek, Mullen, Pine Creek and Fairview to open the season. All have been ranked in the top-10 at some point this season.

On Friday, Doherty rallied from down 14 to take a 21-14 lead at halftime, thanks to two scores from Mosley, and a defensive fumble return for a TD.

In the end, the Spartans were able to hold off a rally from ThunderRidge, which had started the season 4-0.

    1A: (2) Limon 36, (1) Strasburg 6

Limon led 21-0 early, taking that lead into the break, before Strasburg made it 21-6 after three. But the Badgers only added to the margin in the fourth quarter.

“I thought our kids were really ready to play; I think they were excited to play,” coach Mike O’Dwyer told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “With our win that we had last week against Meeker, our kids got a little bit of confidence playing against a really good team. And obviously Strasburg is also a great team, and I think they were really looking forward to the challenge.”

Hauk Hubbard led Limon with 111 yards rushing and two scores, while Celby Hollenbaugh also had a rushing touchdown. Cannan Bennett also threw a touchdown pass for Limon.

The game was briefly interrupted in the second half when the sprinklers came on.

“You don’t see it too often,” O’Dwyer said. “I think that was the second time in my career I’ve seen that happen.”

Limon limited Strasburg to just 15 yards rushing. Strasburg entered the game averaging close to 200 yards per game.

The Badgers rushed for 291 yards themselves.

    4A/3A: (4A 4) Montrose 21, (3A 2) Palisade 17

    (Tom Hoganson)

MONTROSE — Fourth-ranked Montrose won 21-17 in front of a full house on Friday night.

The game went back-and-forth all night. Palisade grabbed a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Montrose cut it to 10-7 on a 85-yard interception return for a touchdown from Cauy Boulder with 23 seconds left in the half.

Montrose grabbed its first lead when Cole Simmons scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, but Palisade responded with a rushing score from quarterback Cam Tucker with 8:34 to play.

The ensuing kickoff went out-of-bounds, giving Montrose the ball at their own 35. They then used a clock-chewing drive to score the winning touchdown with 40 seconds left. Again, it was Simmons who scored, this time on a six-yard rush.

“We beat a good team,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said afterward. “Cauy Boulden’s interception was big for us. We had some young kids step in and play the line and they did a great job.”

“We had some young kids fill in on the line and they open holes for me,” Simmons said.

  • Football roundup: Eaglecrest wins top-10 showdown against Highlands Ranch

    (@raptorathletics/Twitter)

Eaglecrest started its season off with a big win over a top-10 foe, beating Highlands Ranch 49-35 in a Class 5A clash.

The Raptors, who led 28-14 at halftime, opened the third quarter with a 17-play, seven-minute scoring drive. That put them up 35-14.

“We executed really well on that drive,” first-year Eaglecrest coach Dustin Delaney told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “That really just demoralizes people when you do that. That’s the kind of football we want to play.”

Eaglecrest would stretch its lead to 49-21 midway through the fourth quarter before Highlands Ranch scored two late touchdowns to cut it to a 14-point game again.

“We didn’t keep our intensity for the whole time, and kind of let the game get closer than it should’ve been, quite honestly,” Delaney said. “That’s youth. There’s a lot of new starters from the team they had last year, so we’ve got to get them broken in. This was a good game to do it, and get ready for our real tough games down the road.”

Highlands Ranch actually drew first blood with a touchdown early in the first quarter. Eaglecrest responded with a touchdown of its own on the next drive, and then senior Elijah Anderson-Taylor forced a fumble on a sack that set up another touchdown.

The Raptors led the rest of the way.

Eaglecrest never punted, but did turn the ball over six times.

“We’ve got a lot of things to work on, and hopefully we can get them fixed for next week,” Delaney said.

Otis took down the defending champions with a convincing victory in a battle of Bulldogs.

Peetz actually led 28-25 at halftime, but Otis outscored Peetz 27-8 in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

“We pretty much shot ourselves in the foot that whole first half,” Otis coach Paul Griese told the Scoreboard Show. “You know, missed assignments; we’ve got to work on some tackling. But you know what? We were playing the returning state champs, and we were tight. We were extremely tight.”

    3A: (3) Pueblo East 47, (6) Roosevelt 8

Pueblo East yet again looks ready to contend for a state championship.

The Eagles rolled through the top-10 matchup, scoring the game’s first 40 points.

Quarterback Luc Andrada was 12-of-14 with 263 yards and five touchdowns passing, and also rushed for a score, according to Jeff Bersch of the Pueblo Chieftain. Pueblo East won three-straight state championships prior to last season.

    [divider]

    4A: (6) Fruita Monument 10, (9) Pueblo West 6

In a tight defensive battle, Fruita Monument held Pueblo West off the scoreboard following a touchdown on the Cyclones’ initial drive.

The Wildcats went ahead for good on Jacob Burns’ 1-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes to play in the second quarter, per Anthony Sandstrom of the Pueblo West View.

“Our defense flew around, was really aggressive at them, and kind of cut them off,” first-year Fruita Monument coach Cameron Russ told the Scoreboard Show. “They did the same thing to us, so it turned into a ground game — ground-and-pound.”

    [divider]

    3A: Holy Family 19, (4) Pueblo South 7

Holy Family knocked off the defending 4A champions, who have moved down to 3A for this cycle.

Kyle Helbig had two interceptions on defense, including a big one late in the third quarter, according to Jon Yunt of Holy Family. He also had a receiving touchdown.

WESTMINSTER — Joey Joiner gave Legacy the goal it needed to beat Aurora Central 1-0 in the first round of the Class 5A boys soccer playoffs.

“What makes good players great players is finding the right moments to find a stroke of brilliance, and Joey did exactly that tonight,” Legacy coach Anthony Romano said. “He did an unbelievable job in a critical to put one on the frame.”

Joiner popped the ball up with his head just enough off of a corner from Dustin Rittenhouse to get it over the outstretched hands of Aurora Central’s Esteban Tavira-Ramirez and into the back of the net.

“Set piece, it’s me jumping over you,”  Romano said. “It’s that simple.”

Added Joiner: “I trusted our coach with the call when he called our play. I was just glad it went right to me and I was able to get a head on it. I got lucky and hit the crossbar and in.”

Legacy will face Far Northeast in the second round of the Class 5A boys soccer playoffs.

“I told the boys before, in the locker room, that this game was going to be less about tactical and technical soccer, and more about preparation and willingness to compete,” Romano said. “In the end that’s what made the difference: continuing to show some grit.”

Joiner lead’s Legacy in both goals and assists this season, and stepped up once again to provide the offense.

The Lightning controlled the majority of chances in the first half, slowly ratcheting up the offensive output as the game went on.

“We really got fired up in our locker room,” Joiner said. “I think our team was really pumped up. We kept that going into the second half. We kept dominating after that half.”

In the seventh minute, Dustin Rittenhouse put a shot on goal that was saved easily by Tavira-Ramirez.

Moments later, Aurora Central cleared a Legacy corner.

    Then, Legacy turned it up.

“We had a lot of opportunities at the end of the first half, and couldn’t quite find it,” Romano said.

Jordan Swinhart shot wide right from just in front of the net in the 31st minute.

Joey Joiner shot a rocket that hit off the cross bar in the 33rd minute. Legacy controlled the ball off the rebound and sent a low cross in front of the net.

Joiner was there again, but saw his saw his shot go deflect off a defender and out of bounds.

Off of a set play in the 37th minute, Noah Stover sent a ball from the corner, and Stephen Goth corralled the ball around the 18. Goth blasted a shot just over the crossbar.

“It built confidence. That’s our gameplan,” Romano said. “When we stuck to the gameplan, we started creating chance after chance after chance.”

The Lightning didn’t see any results on the scoreboard from the offensive assault, but used the momentum to slot the winning goal in the second half.

“Keep playing hard,” Joiner said on coming out motivated. “Try to outplay the other team. Want it more.”

The back line was great for Legacy as they rarely allowed Aurora Central inside the 18.
