  • 4A boys golf: Stangebye goes low again as Montrose claims state title

    MONTROSE — Micah Stangebye is the ultimate hustler when it comes to invite others into his home and beating them at his game.

    This week, The Bridges served as his home. And golf was his game. And his two rounds in the Class 4A boys golf state tournament will be the talk of the club’s members for years to come.

    Stangebye put together a round of 5-under-par 66 to go with Monday’s 67. It was a good enough week that he won his second straight state championship while he and his Montrose teammates celebrated a third consecutive title.

    “Obviously it was an advantage being able to play this course every day this summer,” Stangebye said. “You know where you can miss it and where you can’t. You know how the putts break and overall I probably hit the ball better than I have any tournament this year starting on the first hole and all the way to the 18th green.”

    On Monday he made just one birdie on the entire front nine. He didn’t wait that long to get going on Tuesday. After Discovery Canyon’s Kaden Ford made a birdie on No. 2 to cut Stangebye’s lead to two strokes, the defending champion got going. He made a birdie on No. 3 and then kept getting look after look.

    Something coach Dave Woodruff talked about after Monday’s round was that he wanted his team to really take its time and appreciate everything that would happen on Tuesday. That message was received for Stangebye as he rushed a short birdie putt on No. 6 and missed it left. On the par-3 seventh, he missed the green to the right but made a fantastic up and down to keep his tournament bogey-free.

    “The winner is always going to be the guy with the smallest misses,” Stangebye said. “It came down to me having only one bogey in 36 holes.”

    That came on the par-3 12th when he flew the green and had little room to work with when trying to get on.

    But he rebounded with a birdie on 13.

    Meanwhile, his teammates were doing what they needed to do to ensure that the team came away with its desired three-peat.

    “Everyone says it’s hard to win at home,” Woodruff said. “You have the crowd and all your fans here. Ryan Lords, our other senior stepping up and making all-state, finishing top-10 was huge.”

    Lords finished the tournament 5-over while Jordan Jennings finished 9-over.

    The leaderboard was stacked with players that will be returning next year. Ford, a junior, finished in a tie for second with Northfield sophomore Hunter Swanson. Lewis-Palmer sophomore Gregory Lewis finished fourth.

    Palisade senior Ethan Aubert finished fifth at 3-over and Cheyenne Mountain senior Gabe Marmon finished 4-over to come in sixth.

    The next couple of years are shaping up to be very competitive for the 4A field.

    “Knowing how close I was to winning, it motivates me and lets me know I can win. I can do this this,” Ford said.

    Pueblo West, behind a strong performance from freshman Noah Wagner, finished second as a team. All four Cyclones golfers will return next season.

    The conclusion of the state golf tournaments marks the beginning of fall championship season. And the tales that will come out of Montrose will live on for years. Bridges general manager Eric Feely made sure that his tournament – and unofficially the start of championship season – started with the biggest party of the fall.

  • Football roundup: Fairview’s Aidan Atkinson tosses 100th career touchdown; Phil Bravo wins No. 300

    Fairview quarterback Aidan Atkinson threw his 100th career touchdown pass during his team’s win over Legacy on Friday night.

    Atkinson, a senior who is committed to Northwestern, threw seven touchdown passes (and 349 yards) in the win, including four in the first half. When the night was over, he ended up with 102 career TDs.

    Atkinson becomes the fifth quarterback in state history to throw 100 touchdowns in his career.

    It was the seventh time in Atkinson’s career that he has thrown at least seven touchdowns. In last season’s game against Legacy, Atkinson broke the 11-man football record with nine touchdowns.

    The Knights beat Legacy 49-31 on Friday, thanks in large part to a 28-3 halftime lead. Legacy came out first in the second half, with a touchdown, onside kick, and another touchdown — but Fairview, when it finally got the ball back, responded right away with another touchdown from Atkinson.

    Four of Atkinson’s TDs went to Henry Blackburn. Fairview, ranked No. 9, is now 5-1 this season.

    300 wins for Monarch’s Phil Bravo

    Monarch beat Gateway 32-6 on Friday, giving their coach, Phil Bravo, the 300th win of his career.

    Bravo has a head coach in Colorado at Centaurus and later Monarch since 1991, and was at Whittier Christian (Calif.) from 1986-90 prior to that.

    In the lone matchup of top-10 teams on Friday night, Florence made a statement as the Huskies remained unbeaten at 5-0.

    Florence running back Owen Busetti rushed for 294 yards and four touchdowns in the win, according to Austin White of the Pueblo Chieftain.

    “He’s a great kid. And he’s the type of kid that’s done everything right in the offseason,” Jeremy Nix told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show after the game. “He’s special. He makes the coaches look good at times, and he does good things, he makes good cuts, good decisions. And the O-line is doing a heck of a job for him, too.”

    Florence will continue its tough league schedule as the season rolls along, including contests against St. Mary’s, Buena Vista, Centauri, and Colorado Springs Christian.

    “This is the grind part of our season,” Nix said, “so we’ll know what we’re made of, and our character will get tested.”

    • Damien Barnes, the state leader in rushing touchdowns, added to his total with four more (and 249 yards) as Eads beat Walsh 60-28 in 6-man. He now has 19 through five games.
    • Evergreen knocked off 3A No. 7 Palisade, 19-17.
    • Arapahoe is now 5-1 following a big win over Cherokee Trail, 10-7. It is the program’s best start since winning their first 10 games in 2015.
    • In 1A, Wray beat No. 8 Burlington 14-0.
    • Rocky Mountain beat cross-city rival Poudre, 24-7, and the Lobos are now 3-3. “It was a great old-school high school football game tonight,” Rocky coach Mark Brook told the Scoreboard Show. “They played their hearts out tonight. Our kids stepped up and made some big plays when they needed to.”
    • Harrison beat Pueblo County in overtime, 21-14. “Tonight, it was just one heck of a football game,” coach Al Melo told the Scoreboard Show. The Colorado Springs Gazette has a full story.
    • Bayfield ended a two-game skid with a 28-10 win over Alamosa. “I think every played played to the best of their ability,” coach Gary Heided told the Scoreboard Show. “Every player went in and really tried to make amends for what’s happened the last couple of weeks.”
    • 2A No. 7 Basalt handed Moffat County its first loss with a 49-7 win. The Longhorns are now 5-0. “The kids played really hard, and they flew around,” coach Carl Frerichs told the Scoreboard Show. Gavin Webb rushed for four touchdowns for Basalt.
    • 5A No. 10 Legend snuck past Fountain-Fort Carson 23-21 to stay unbeaten at 6-0.
    • 4A No. 4 Montrose beat Fruita Monument 21-14. Here’s a story from the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.
    • Northridge, in 3A, is now 4-1 after beating Lincoln 49-6. It is the program’s best start since 2012.

  • Montrose football wins cross-class showdown against Palisade

    In a cross-classification matchup of ranked teams, 4A No. 5 Montrose shut out 3A No. 6 Palisade.

    Montrose built up a 14-0 halftime lead en route to a 21-0 victory at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

    “Very pleased with the way our defense played,” Montrose coach Brett Mertens said. “They were dominant tonight and made up for some offensive mistakes. It was a great team win and we are very proud of our kids.”

    Added Palisade coach Joe Ramunno: “Total dominance by Montrose. Start to finish.”

    After a scoreless first quarter, Emmert Kastendieck went 23 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead.

    Later in the same quarter, Keagan Goodwin found Kastendieck for a 25-yard passing score. That held up for the 14-0 halftime lead.

    The third quarter was scoreless.

    In the fourth quarter, Cole Simmons scored from one yard out with 4:43 to play, sealing the win.

    “The line blocked really well,” said Kastendieck, a senior. “The rest of the backs had really good fakes.”

    “The defense played lights and we really played well on both sides of the ball,” senior linebacker Ben Robuck added. “I’m really proud of how hard everyone is working and playing. We still have room to improve on both sides of the ball. I’m looking forward to continue playing with my team.”
