  • Evergreen baseball wins district with walk-off home run

    EVERGREEN — In the bottom of the seventh inning, Josh Bellatti sat on a fastball and drove it the opposite way, clearing the outfield fence, but in foul territory. When that same pitch came across the plate again, he didn’t miss.

    Josh Bellatti’s three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh gave the Evergreen Cougars a 7-4 win over Lewis-Palmer allowing them to claim the 4A District 2 title and move on in the 4A state playoffs.

    The win capped off a roller coaster of a game that had the Cougars up 4-0, only to lose the lead in the top half of the seventh and win the game in walk-off fashion. They did it all without their ace pitcher, Brock Burke, who threw seven strong innings in the day’s first game to advance the Cougars to the district title game.

    “The team we just beat is a very good team, up and down the lineup,” Cougars coach Dale Hutchings said. “But our guys stayed right with it and pitch-by-pitch, play-by-play they did a great job.”

    A 3-1 win over the Air Academy Kadets earlier in the day earned the Cougars the right to play for a chance to move on. The Cougars fell behind early as Air Academy third baseman Jeremy Hockmuth crushed a home run to center field in the first inning. Burke didn’t let that phase him and would go on to strikeout 13 Kadets en route to the win.

    “The fastball was working. I kept looking off the curveball, but the fastball was working really well,” Burke said. “I figured (the home run) was a fluke thing and the next time he (Hockmuth) came up I threw three straight fastballs and he didn’t touch one of them.”

    The Rangers were dominant themselves in their first game of the day. They found themselves in a pitchers duel with Fort Morgan and their ace Jared Bohm, but after a few adjustments, they were able to start making contact with the ball, grabbing a 3-0 lead on three-straight singles in the fourth inning. Paul Tillotson added a home run in the fifth to give the Rangers a clean 4-0 win, setting up their game with the Cougars.

    “We talked to the team — the game is all about corrections — and so after the first two innings we started making corrections and crowding the plate a little bit more,” Rangers coach Tom McCabe said. “They made good adjustments and we expected a good game out of (pitcher Colin) Cicere and we got more than we expected to tell you the truth.”

    The Rangers once again found themselves in an offensive funk early in their game against the Cougars. Through the first four innings they mustered only two hits and failed to score a run. The Cougars on the other hand, were able to get to Tillotson — the staff ace for the Rangers — early.

    A couple of a errors and a wild pitch in the second inning allowed the Cougars to get on the game first and the frustration got to the sophomore hurler as he gave up a two-run home run to catcher Dylan Schmoker. Daniel Gibbins added a solo-shot in the fourth, putting the Cougars up 4-0.

    “Defense is part of the game, you make an error here and an error there,” McCabe said. “It’s acceptable and our boys did a great job.”

    Hope was not lost for the Rangers, however, as a fifth inning, three-run home run by leftfielder Conner Weeth pulled Lewis-Palmer to within a run. The Rangers would find that run in the top of the seventh as Weeth walked and was moved to third on a Tillotson single. The Cougars intentionally walked Conner Haws setting up a P.J. Underwood game-tying single.

    Despite still having the bases loaded with one out, the Rangers wouldn’t be able to bring in another run and the two teams went into the bottom of the seventh tied 4-4.

    It was there that two runners would reach, and a swing of the bat from Josh Bellatti would bring everyone in and keep in the Cougars in the hunt for a state championship.

    “Their pitcher was having trouble with the off-speed pitch so I knew he was going fastballs all the way,” Josh Bellatti said. “I usually like to pull the ball but I knew with two strikes he wouldn’t give me anything good to hit and he was working that outside corner so I knew if I was going to put the ball in play I would have to hit it to right field.”

    The walk-off win for the Cougars capped an exciting day in the 4A field that saw three of the state’s top four seeds fall. Evergreen now moves on to the state bracket which will be played next weekend.

  • Regis Jesut new No. 1 atop 5A baseball poll

    For the second consecutive week, there’s a new team atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball ranking. This time, Regis Jesuit has ascended to the top.

    The Raiders, now 14-3, went 3-0 last week — including a 7-5 win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge. They are now 9-0 in the always tough Continental League, and are riding an 11-game winning streak.

    Fairview actually received the same amount of first-place votes (six) that Regis Jesuit did, but remained at No. 2 with 125 overall points to the Raiders’ 137. The Knights are now 16-1 — 13-0 against in-state teams.

    Columbine stayed at No. 3 after going 2-1 last week. Included was a 12-6 win over Chatfield, which at the time was ranked No. 1. But the Rebels also dropped a game to Arvada West, which had an amazing week with wins over the Nos. 1, 3 and 8 teams.

    Arvada West jumped into the rankings at No. 6, just behind No. 5 Chatfield and No. 4 Mountain Vista.

    ThunderRidge dropped to No. 7, Rocky Mountain is No. 8 and Chaparral is No. 9. Cherry Creek rejoined the poll at No. 10.

    There are also new teams atop the 3A and 2A polls. In 3A, Eaton received nine of the 10 first-place votes to overtake Holy Family, which dropped to No. 2. In 2A, Resurrection Christian got five of the seven first-place votes and took over for Swink, which also fell to No. 2.

    Windsor retained its spot atop the 4A ranking, and Stratton held firm atop 1A.

    The 4A poll added Pueblo East at No. 9, and also saw Lewis-Palmer move from No. 5 to No. 3, and Evergreen go from No. 7 to No. 4.

    3A added Bayfield (No. 8), while 2A added Limon (No. 9) and Lyons (No. 10).

    With the regular season ending Tuesday, these rankings will serve as the final poll of the regular season.

  • Little movement in final girls soccer rankings of the season

    With the playoffs just around the corner, girls soccer seems to have a pretty clear picture. For now, anyway.

    Not only did none of the No. 1 teams change this week, none of the three classes added a new team in this week’s CHSAANow.com rankings.

    There were jumps here and there — Jefferson Academy went from No. 6 to No. 3 in 3A; Palmer Ridge from No. 10 to No. 8 in 4A — but most of the movement amounted to tinkering.

    The No. 1 teams this week are Pine Creek (5A), Cheyenne Mountain (4A) and Colorado Academy (3A).

    With the regular season ending on Friday, these will serve as the final rankings.

    Chatfield, 13-0 to start the 2014 season, has taken over atop this week’s Class 5A baseball poll from CHSAANow.com.

    The Chargers moved up from No. 3 and received seven of the 15 first-place votes. They had 131 total points to top the ranking.

    A total of six teams got first-place votes, including former No. 1 ThunderRidge, which dropped to No. 6 following its loss to Mountain Vista last week.

    Fairview got two of those first-place votes and is No. 2 this week. Columbine, which plays Chatfield on Wednesday, is third, and Regis Jesuit is fourth. Mountain Vista rounds out the top five.

    After ThunderRidge, Arapahoe is seventh and Ralston Valley is eighth. Chaparral is No. 9 this week, and Rocky Mountain is No. 10.

    The 4A ranking also got a new No. 1 team this week when Windsor overtook Montrose. The Wizards received six of the 13 first-place votes, and had 115 overall points.

    Montrose dropped to second this week, and is followed by No. 3 Niwot. Wheat Ridge bumped up one place to No. 4, while Lewis-Palmer is No. 5 after 3-0 week which included a win over then-No. 10 Palmer Ridge on Saturday.

    Longmont is the lone newcomer to the 4A poll, joining at No. 10.

    The other No. 1 teams held firm atop their respective rankings. Holy Family continued to lead 3A, Swink remain atop of 2A and Stratton continued to lead 1A.

  • Pine Creek, Colorado Academy new No. 1s in girls soccer rankings

    Pine Creek toppled No. 1 Mountain Vista last week. This week, the Eagles now occupy that No. 1 spot.

    Pine Creek beat Mountain Vista 4-3 on the road last Friday. Monday, the Eagles got eight of the 11 first-place votes and amassed 111 overall points to become the new No. 1 team.

    Mountain Vista didn’t drop far. The Golden Eagles are No. 2 this week, while Rock Canyon is No. 3. Fairview is No 4 and Fossil Ridge rounds out the top five.

    Unbeaten Smoky Hill (No. 6) and Ralston Valley (No. 10) are newcomers to the 5A ranking this week.

    In 4A, Cheyenne Mountain continued to lead the ranking. That poll added Palmer Ridge at No. 10.

    3A, however, also got a new No. 1 team. Colorado Academy took over for Kent Denver, which went 1-1-1 last week. Kent dropped to No. 2.

    The lone newcomer to the ranking was No. 10 St. Mary’s Academy, which beat Kent last week.

  • Lewis-Palmer baseball takes control of league with win over Palmer Ridge

    MONUMENT — A 10-strikeout outing from pitcher Paul Tillotson gave No. 6 Lewis-Palmer a two-game lead in league play as the Rangers (11-3, 9-0) beat rival Palmer Ridge 2-1 in Class 4A baseball action Saturday.

    Tillotson, the staff’s ace, went 6 1/3 innings giving up only a single earned run also accounted for the tying run in the bottom of the fourth. Bears pitcher Kurt Larson kept pace with Tilloston as he struck out 10 of his own and only allowed nine base runners all game.

    Behind Larson, it was the tenth-ranked Bears (10-4, 8-2) who stuck first. With two outs and runners on the corners in the first inning, Jake Weems singled into right field bringing home what would prove to be their only run of the game.

    With the way Larson was dealing on the mound, it looked like that one run might be able to hold off the Rangers. But with runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, a routine groundball to Bears shortstop Jack Stamper would bring about the downfall for Palmer Ridge. Stamper fielded the ball cleanly, but a bad throw got by first baseman Cassen Minarick allowed both runners to score, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

    “What do they say? ‘You take it any you can,’” Rangers coach Tom McCabe said. “Our belief and our gameplan is to put the ball in play hard and force the other to play defense. I’m real big on no strikeouts so we have to put the ball in play.”

    Lewis-Palmer had a chance to extend its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after loading the bases with two outs. Vinny Nall put a solid swing on the ball and ripped a line drive to right field, but it was caught by Jake Grubesic, taking the game to the seventh and final inning with the Bears trailing by one.

    After throwing six solid innings, Tillotson convinced McCabe to go back out in the seventh to try and sew up the win for the Rangers. McCabe had kept a close a eye on Tillotson’s pitch count starting in the fifth and had toyed with the idea of diving into his bullpen. But in the end, he had enough faith in his sophomore ace to give him the chance to close it out.

    “He’s been throwing all winter so he’s (capable of throwing) up to 100 pitches,” McCabe said. “When our guys get to 80 we starting looking and start watching real close. He said he felt good so we gave him two more batters.”

    After a quick out to start the inning, he gave up a base hit to Billy Schulze who would move into scoring position on a passed ball. Stamper then singled to put runners on the corners with one out, ending Tillotson’s day.

    McCabe then turned to Colin Cicere — who is scheduled to start Tuesday at Palmer Ridge — to get the last two outs of the inning. Cicere walked Cole Hurford to load the bases before striking out Carter Thorne and inducing a ground ball to shortstop Ben Stinson to finish the inning, giving the Rangers the win.

    “I have all the confidence in the world in Colin,” Tillotson said. “I know Colin, he’s a great guy, a pitching fanatic and I knew he would come in and (be) good.”

    The two Pikes Peak league rivals will meet again Tuesday, this time on Palmer Ridge’s home field. Now facing a two game deficit in the standings, the pressure is on the Bears to even the season series and maintain a shot at winning a league title.

    “I believe this was the key game,” McCabe said. “The pressure lies on them now. They have to us. I’m hoping we go into Palmer Ridge the way we stressed to the boys, nice and loose and able to execute our game plan. It was big for us to win here at home and relieve some of the pressure.”

  • Fairview climbs to No. 4 in latest 5A baseball ranking

    Perhaps no win was bigger for Fairview in recent years than last Thursday’s decision over then-No. 5 Rocky Mountain.

    But the win for the Knights was just one-fourth a tough 4-0 week last week, and now they find themselves ranked No. 4 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A baseball poll. Fairview was seventh last week.

    The Knights are actually 7-0 in Colorado, with the lone loss coming in Arizona during a Spring Break tournament. Their lineup has produced double-digit scoring outputs the past four games.

    ThunderRidge remained in its top spot in the 5A ranking, where it has been since the preseason. Regis Jesuit stayed at No. 2, and Chatfield held firm at No. 3.

    Behind Fairview, Columbine rounds out the top five.

    Ralston Valley is No. 6, Mountain Vista is No. 7 and Arapahoe is No. 8. Rocky Mountain dropped to No. 9 after going 1-2 last week.

    Chaparral is the lone newcomer to 5A this week. The Wolverines rejoined the poll at No. 10.

    Elsewhere, Swink took over the top spot in the 2A ranking. At 9-0, Swink moved up from No. 2. Former No. 1 Resurrection Christian dropped to No. 3.

    The 2A poll added Kiowa (No. 8) this week.

    The other No. 1 teams remained the same. Those are Montrose (4A), Holy Family (3A) and Stratton (1A).

    The 4A poll has two new teams this week: Wheat Ridge, which joined all the way at No. 5, and Elizabeth, which is No. 7.

    3A added No. 9 Brush, while 1A added No. 6 Briggsdale.
