  • All-state football teams for the 2017 season

    The 2017 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • Football roundup: Aspen, Middle Park combine to score 130 points; Fruita tops Montrose

    Well, here’s one way to start a football season.

    Aspen and Middle Park combined to score 130 points when the two teams opened the year on Friday night. That total sits just outside the CHSAA record book.

    According to the Aspen Times, the Skiers racked up 707 yards of total offense, and quarterback R.J. Peshek accounted for six touchdowns.

    It was a crazy night.

    “Words can’t explain it,” Peshek told CHSAANow after the game. “Everyone just played out of their mind. The O-line, it wouldn’t have worked without them. It finally clicked for us.”

    The two teams were tied at 20 after the first quarter, and knotted at 34 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter, it was 50-50.

    But Middle Park didn’t score again in the Class 2A contest, and Aspen sure did.

    “That is probably maxes out the highest score that I’ve ever been a part of,” said Peshek, who is now in his third season as Aspen’s starting quarterback. “We run a tempo-style offense, it’s all about tempo, and it gets to the point where it just wears the defense down, to the point where they’re not ready when we’re snapping the ball.”

    4A: (7) Fruita Monument 36, Montrose 35

    The Wildcats and coach Todd Casebier avenged this loss from a season ago. Casebier spent 10 seasons as the coach at Montrose.

    This game was a back-and-forth affair. It featured six lead changes, and saw Fruita Monument rally from down 27-14 at the half, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.

    Fruita eventually took a 28-27 lead late in the third quarter, only to see Montrose answer right back and go up 35-28.

    With 2:15 to play, the Wildcats’ Braeden Graham, a senior, scored a touchdown, and Treyton Queen converted the two-point attempt.

    • In another crazy game, 3A No. 3 Holy Family rallied to beat 4A Mountain View 33-27. The Tigers scored the winning touchdown with 11 seconds remaining, capping a 92-yard drive, according to BoCoPreps.com. “Zero Week is like the Twilight Zone,” Holy Family coach Mike Gabriel told the paper afterward.
    • No. 7 Sterling ran away from No. 6 Resurrection Christian 33-8 in a 2A top-10 clash. Isaac Harris had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in helping the Tigers win.
    • Alamosa beat Florence 43-0, and Katy Gallegos was 5-for-6 on her extra points. The senior also plays for the school’s girls soccer team. “We were really happy for Katy, she did an awesome job,” Alamosa coach Dillon McNamee told KSPK afterward. “I think every kick was a little more powerful, and little straighter. We love having a sister on our team, and it’s girl power, absolutely.”
    • 5A No. 1 Valor Christian rallied to beat out-of-state foe Faith Lutheran from Nevada 30-21. The turning point was a crazy option pitch from Luke McCaffrey to Joshia Davis which tied the game at 21. The Eagles added a safety shortly thereafter.
    • 1A No. 2 Meeker rolled to a 40-0 win over Highland. The Cowboys used 26 second-quarter points to grab a 34-0 lead at halftime.
    • In 8-man, No. 2 Akron beat Granada for the second-straight season. This one came by a 46-14 score.
    • 3A No. 8 Palisade beat Grand Junction Central 20-14 in overtime. It marked the first time the two teams had battled for their new rivalry hardware: The WarDog Trophy.

  • Colorado places seventh at U.S. Marine Corps Junior Women’s Nationals

    Colorado had two second place finishes to secure seventh place at the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Nationals in the Junior Women’s Freestyle division.

    Florence’s Kourtney Boehm and Douglas County’s Jerzie Estrada placed second in the 122 and 138 weight class, respectively.

    Douglas County added another wrestler at the podium as Tristan Kelly won her third-place match in the 164-pound division.

    In the Cadet division, Kelly lost in the fifth place match. Colorado did not place in the top ten.

    However, Brighton’s Jaslynn Gallegos took third place in the 106-pound weight class after taking sixth in the junior sector.

    Gallegos accepted the award for most pins in the cadet division, with five.

    On the boys side, Jett Strickenberger won his 94-pound bout.

    Dominick Serrano placed second in the 120-pound division. Serrano went a perfect 50-0 for Windsor as he took the state championship in Class 4A.

    The Colorado boys tied for 14th in the junior freestyle division.

  • No. 8 Manitou Springs baseball sweeps double-header over Florence

    FLORENCE — Sometimes a vacation isn’t always what’s needed. Especially when it comes to a sport as rhythm-based as baseball.

    The scoreboard may have shown Manitou Springs come away with a double-header sweep over Florence on Monday, but saying that sound baseball was played would be a bit of a stretch.

    The CHSAANow.com eighth-ranked Mustangs came away with 9-4 and 6-3 wins in their first league games, but in a way, they didn’t feel like they left the city of Florence with a pair of wins.

    “I just felt like we didn’t have any flow today,” coach Cory Archuleta said. “We were lethargic and lazy and we weren’t good at the things we’re normally good at.”

    That’s not to say it was all bad. In game one, Brennan Allen had a solid day on the mound for the Mustangs (5-1 overall, 2-0 Tri-Peaks West). He threw a complete game, giving up only three earned runs while striking out 10 batters.

    He was helped out offensively by Davyn Adamscheck who went 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

    The Huskies (2-5, 0-2) had pulled close on runs scored by Dominic Bellino and Alec Lucero in the bottom of the third. They added one more in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Manitou lead to 5-4.

    Adamscheck’s biggest at-bat of the game came when he started the Mustangs off with a double that he snagged an extra base out of thanks to an error. Up one with two outs and Adamscheck on third, a passed ball made it a two-run game and Manitou would only increase the lead for Allen.

    “It felt like I needed to do more to back up my team at that point,” Allen said. “I needed to throw strikes and we needed to make sure our defense worked and we were getting outs.”

    Florence couldn’t get the bats going again and Allen struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Mustangs the win in their first game back from spring break.

    But in the process, the Mustangs committed two big errors and left five runners on base.

    But things wouldn’t be quite so easy in game two, even with Manitou getting off to a quick start offensively.

    James Baker ripped a 2-RBI single into right field, putting the Mustangs up 3-0 early. But Garrett Proud turned in a solid pitching performance for the Huskies. He didn’t allow a Manitou hit for four innings, but the Florence was able to score three of their own. The Mustangs grabbed a 4-3 lead, but Proud didn’t allow another Manitou hit for four innings.

    “It’s always about pitching,” Florence coach Shane Reeves said. “He settled in, he had control of all of his pitches. Garrett pitched a really really good game and that changes everything.”

    It really did for the Huskies. They left four runners on base, which can sink teams in one-run games. They Mustangs got two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a three-run game, but they were more than aware how much they struggled at the plate.

    “We haven’t seen a lot in practice, so the curveballs threw us off a lot,” Allen said. “We weren’t ready for that second game.”

    Manitou came away with the win in big part of Archuleta’s decision to have Adamscheck throw the last four innings of the game.

    The senior struck out five of the first six hitters he faced. Not another Husky would reach base when Adamscheck took the mound.

    The struggle for Archuleta is trying to find a reliable fill-in at shortstop. Monday, he turned to freshman Joey Allen who came up with two big plays to help the Mustangs get the win.

    “Davyn is always the ace in the hole,” Archuleta said. “It was nice to see a freshman like Joey Allen step in and play short. That was our biggest concern was having someone play that position.”

    The Mustangs have just over a week before they see another Tri-Peaks opponent. They travel to Rye on Apr. 11. It will be 12 days for Florence as they’ll host Buena Vista on Apr. 15.

  • Jim Lucas elected next president of CHSAA’s Board of Directors

    AURORA — Jim Lucas, an assistant principal at Pine Creek High School, has been elected as the next president of CHSAA’s Board of Directors.

    Lucas’ appointment will be made formal at the Legislative Council meeting on Thursday. He will become the 61st Board president, succeeding Boulder’s Eddie Hartnett.

    Lucas will serve as Board president during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. His term will begin in June 2017.

    “It’s going to be exciting, and it’s going to be challenging,” Lucas said on Wednesday night. “It’s humbling to be selected.”

    Lucas currently represents the Colorado Association of School Executives on CHSAA’s Board of Directors, and has since 2011. He will be the first Board president from the Colorado Springs area since Widefield’s Shelli Miles was president from 2009-11.

    Lucas has a wide range of experience at both small and large high schools, as well as public and private high schools, ranging from being a coach to a teacher to an administrator. He has spent time at a number of Colorado high schools, including Columbine, Crowley County, Custer County, and Florence. (He was principal at both Custer County, from 1996-99, and Florence, from 2000-08.)

    He has been at Pine Creek ever since, including roles as interim athletic director and assistant principal.

    Lucas says his wide-ranging experience will help him have a well-rounded viewpoint as Board president, including time at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, where he got his master’s degree in athletic administration.

    “I have a soft spot in my heart for rural schools, just because I’ve worked in them. And I understand the big metro schools,” Lucas said. “Ultimately I think it will help as I lead the Board. Those experiences will help guide all of us, and guide myself.”

    Lucas has twice previously served as a Board president for the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals, of which he’s been a member since 2003.

    “I think that will help me, having that experience with CASSP,” Lucas said.

    Lucas said one of his focuses as president will be to help ease the transition from retiring CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico to the next commissioner.

    “I want to spend some time with that (new commissioner) and kind of give them some historical background of the Board of Directors,” Lucas said. “I want to see a smooth transition.”

    CHSAA’s Board of Directors, formerly known as the Executive Committee, has been around in some form since the Association was formed in 1921.

    Lucas applied to be Board president in December, writing a letter to CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico.

    The Board considered two candidates during an executive session on Thursday, and then voted to elect Lucas president.

    While serving on the Board, Lucas has served on a variety of CHSAA committees, and helped to rewrite the Association’s personnel handbook.

  • All-state football teams for 2016 season

    The 2016 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

    These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

    Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

    CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created entirely from the results of the coaches’ vote.
