    Re-classification of schools

Three schools asked to reclassify according to bylaw 1500.21, which allows schools to move down a class if they meet a number of factors, such as socio-economics, geography, competitive history and enrollment trend.

    • Greeley Central was approved to reclassify. This means their team sports will compete in 4A, and representatives of the school said it was their intention to play up to 4A in sports, such as wrestling, where the reclassification would put them in 3A.
    • Montezuma-Cortez’s reclassification from 4A to 3A was also approved. Likewise, school reps said they would commit to playing up to 3A in any sports where the reclassification would put them in 2A.
    • Skyline’s reclassification from 5A to 4A was approved.

    Program playdowns

The following schools had their program playdown requests approved. These programs will not be eligible to compete in the postseason, per bylaw 1500.27.

    • Arvada football from 3A to 2A.
    • Boulder softball from 5A to 4A.
    • Calhan football from 1A to 8-man.
    • Cripple-Creek Victor from 8-man to 6-man.
    • Dolores Huerta from 1A to 8-man.
    • Jefferson from 2A to 1A.
    • Loveland boys and girls soccer from 5A to 4A.
    • Mead boys soccer from 4A to 3A.
    • Pinnacle football from 2A to 1A.
    • Rangeview boys lacrosse from 5A to 4A.

    New schools approved as members

The committee approved seven new schools for initial probationary membership into CHSAA. They are:

    • Denver School of Science & Tech – Byers, which is in Denver’s Wash Park neighborhood.
    • KIPP Northeast, located in northeast Denver.
    • Loveland Classical School, in Loveland.
    • Riverdale Ridge, in Brighton.
    • Strive Prep Rise, in northeast Denver.
    • Strive Prep Smart, in southwest Denver.
    • Thomas MacLaren, in Colorado Springs.

KIPP Northeast and Strive Prep Rise are housed in the same building and are planning to co-op, so they will play 4A. DSST-Byers, Riverdale Ridge and Strive Prep Smart will likely be 3A. Loveland Classical and Thomas MacLaren will likely be 2A,

Riverdale Ridge will most likely play 2A football, as well.

Another school, Windsor Charter, was not accepted because the CLOC members felt the school was not yet ready to become a member for a variety of reasons.

With these new schools, CHSAA will have 361 member schools in 2018-19.

    [divider]

    Stargate School granted full membership

One new school has joined CHSAA as a full member, moving off probationary status: Stargate School, which is located in Thornton.

Three others up for review for full membership were left on probationary status:

    • DSST-College View was left on because it has had multiple CHSAA violations dealing with eligibility.
    • Golden View Classical Academy and Victory Prep Academy were both left on probationary status because no one from the school attended the CLOC meeting.
  • Football roundup: No. 5 Roosevelt gets a big win over No. 8 Berthoud in 3A

    (@Spartans_BHS/Twitter)

Roosevelt football beat Berthoud on Friday night in a key Class 3A matchup.

For starters, it was a top-10 win, with the No. 5 Roughriders topping the No. 8 Spartans. Second, it was a win in the Class 3A Tri-Valley League, which is probably the best league in the state regardless of classification. Third, Roosevelt is now 5-2.

But most importantly: It helped the Roughriders move up in the 3A RPI standings from No. 13 to No. 8.

Roosevelt rallied from down 12-7 to take a 15-12 lead at halftime, and led 22-12 after three quarters.

    2A: (6) Sterling 56, Fort Lupton 28

Sterling quarterback Bodie Hume threw six touchdowns in the first half of Sterling’s 56-28 win over Fort Lupton. That ties the state record.

Hume finished with seven touchdowns; he only played one series in the second half.

The six touchdowns in a half are now tied for the most in state history. Hume is the seventh player to do that. His seven touchdown passes are tied for the fifth-most in state history.

    4A: (10) Skyline 70, Greeley Central 44

Skyline junior Jeremy Hollingsworth rushed for six touchdowns and more than 350 yards in a wild win over Greeley Central. He now has scored 26 touchdowns this season.

The Falcons are 6-1 this season.

    3A: Fort Morgan 17, (6) Silver Creek 7

Fort Morgan not only pulled off the upset, but moved to 2-0 in the Northern League. Both conference wins followed a three-game losing streak.

“We changed it up this week,” Mustangs coach Harrison Chisum told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “We had a lot of competitions and a lot more fun in practice, and it kind of helped with our energy level.”

Donovan Moya had an interception return for a score to help Fort Morgan win on Friday.

“He’s a competitor, and that was a huge pick-six to start the second half,” Chisum said.

Both teams are now 4-3 this season.

    6-man: (1) Stratton/Liberty 63, (3) Otis 6

The Knighted Eagles are 7-0 after this latest win.

“We’re really excited about the win, an really excited about the way we’ve been playing,” coach Toby Kechter told the Scoreboard Show.

    Kechter praised his line.

“The kids just blocked their hearts out,” he said. “The effort’s just been great.”

  • Football roundup: No. 1 Pine Creek gets big win over No. 3 Windsor in 4A

    (@PineCreekAT /Twitter)

David Moore III scored an early touchdown, and the Pine Creek defense did the rest.

Moore, a sophomore, had a rushing score in the first quarter, his third of the season. The Eagles, top-ranked in Class 4A, added a field goal in the second quarter.

And though No. 3 Windsor had its chances deep in Pine Creek territory, the Eagles’ defense held firm. The last big play came with 3:57 remaining when Pine Creek intercepted a pass at its own 6-yard-line.

“Our defense stood the test, and had two great stands inside our 20,” coach Todd Miller told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “They kind of bowed their necks and were able to dig in. … Right now, we’re living on our defense.”

This matchup marked the fourth time in the past five seasons that the two teams have met, including twice in the postseason. Pine Creek has won all four matchups.

Pine Creek is now 2-0 after beating 5A ThunderRidge last week. The Eagles host Fountain-Fort Carson next week.

Windsor drops to 1-1, and plays at Broomfield next week.

    5A: (9) Mullen at (3) Regis Jesuit

The Mustangs stunned their rival with a comeback that saw Mullen take the lead for the first time with three seconds left in the game.

Regis Jesuit had led the entire game, and the Raiders were up 39-26 with 2:56 remaining, but Mullen recovered a late fumble on the 47-yard-line, scored on a pass play, and then got an onside kick with 50 seconds remaining.

That set up the winning touchdown, with quarterback Dominic Depizzol throwing a 6-yard touchdown to Alonzo Moon on fourth-and-2. The point-after was good, and that gave the Mustangs the win.

Depizzol had six passing touchdowns, four of which went to Wind Henderson.

Regis Jesuit quarterback Justin Lamb threw three touchdowns. Kiahn Martinez had a rushing TD.

    4A/3A: (10) Pueblo West 36, (5) Pueblo East 14

Pueblo West handed Pueblo East its first in-city loss since 2014.

“They’re a quality program. We knew we were going to have to play a good game,” Cyclones coach Monte Pinkerton told the Scoreboard Show. “We were able to finish a little bit stronger than we did last year, and were able to pull it off.”

The Cyclones were led by their defense on Friday night.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys that just like to fly around,” Pinkerton said.

  • All-state boys swimming and diving teams for the 2017 season

The 2017 all-state boys swimming teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

Swimmers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they swam in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they swam in.

Divers of the year were selected by finish at the state meet. Coaches of the year were voted upon by coaches at the state meet.

  • All-state wrestling teams for 2016-17 season

The 2016-17 all-state wrestling teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet. Coaches of the year were selected by team performance at the state meet, as well.

Wrestlers of the year were determined by a formula which took the following information into account: season record; season winning percentage; type of wins at state (pin, tech fall, major decision); strength of a weight classification’s bracket; and multiple championships.

Scroll down to see the teams, or use the menu below to navigate to the class of your choosing.
