  • All-state football teams for the 2018 season

The 2018 all-state football teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created following a lengthy process which included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of head coaches across the state.

Players were placed onto the first-team, second-team and honorable mention based upon the number of votes they received. In 5A-1A, spots were reserved for linemen and one kicker/punter, while 8-man reserved spots for linemen.

CHSAA does not determine who makes or doesn’t make the team; they are created from the results of the coaches’ vote.

  • 4A boys soccer semis: Air Academy, Denver North to play for championship

    (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)

AURORA — After sealing a 3-1 victory over Glenwood Springs in the Class 4A boys soccer semifinals at Legacy Stadium, the Kadets of Air Academy could achieve a rare feat, potentially winning back-to-back crowns in boys soccer.

No 4A program has double-dipped in consecutive seasons since Dakota Ridge (1997, 1998).

Air Academy is now 17-1-1 on the season with their only setback coming at the hands of 5A power, Boulder, in August. The Kadets are the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The upset-minded Demons, the No. 20 seed, struck first on Wednesday though as Leo Micelles found the right side of the net with a left-footed touch in the 18th minute. Three minutes later, Thaddaeus Dewing snuck the equalizer past goalkeeper Carlos Guardado.

A second goal by Dewing a few minutes after that, he has a total of 26 on the season, provided an edge the Kadets wouldn’t relinquish. Adin Schwenke tacked on an insurance goal in the 53rd minute.

In last year’s finals, a sterling senior group for Air Academy helped top Centaurus 1-0.

And so, in a nearly unprecedented total for Colorado, the program will be appearing in their ninth boys soccer championship match at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. They were the 5A winners in 1990 and the 4A champions in 2010, 2014, and 2017.

Glenwood Springs was hoping to appear in their first-ever finals, but bowed out with a 13-5-1 record. They rebounded in a big way this fall after dropping three of their initial four matches.

    (3) Denver North 1, (7) The Classical Academy 0

In the second semifinal clash, terrific defenses made it difficult for each team to break through.

A scoreless opening half, despite a few nifty header attempts and footwork moves by Denver North, continued into the second frame. Initially the Vikings’ Elliot Nottoli appeared to score a goal right before halftime, but he was offsides.

Finally, in the 48th minute he had a terrific cross to Jonathan Gonzalez, whose header touched net.

Then the North (16-1-2) defense, a group that has given up a mere six goals the entire season and outscored Littleton, Silver Creek, and Pueblo Centennial a combined 8-0 in earlier tournament rounds, did the rest in securing the Vikings’ first-ever berth in the boys soccer state finals.

A highly skilled group, North was equally capable using their feet or heads on Wednesday. They have relied plenty on a big batch of non-seniors, which includes leading goal-scorer Nottoli (sophomore), along with Gonzalez (junior), and Abel Torres (freshman).

As for TCA (15-4), the regular contenders had been clutch in the playoffs while overcoming both Holy Family and Skyview with penalty kicks. The Titans earned their first boys soccer crown in 2016 (7-1 over Battle Mountain) and were hoping to lock up their spot in the finals for the seventh time (runner-up in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015).

They also have a promising contingent returning.

  • Football roundup: No. 6 Burlington beats No. 5 Wray in 1A

    Strasburg Burlington football
    (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Class 1A’s North Central league features four teams ranked in this week’s top-10. So Friday’s league matchup between No. 5 Wray and No. 6 Burlington was of a little extra importance.

Burlington came away with an important 19-8 win over Wray, thanks in part to two touchdown passes from Braden Witzel, and some stout defense.

“It is a big win for us,” Burlington coach Glynn Higgs told the Colorado Preps Scoreboard Show. “I was really proud of our defense. Two or three times, they were down inside the 20. And we were able to keep them from putting points on the board. I was just really proud of the kids.”

Taylor Scott opened the scoring for Burlington with a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After a Wray safety, Witzel threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Burton with 4:42 left in the second.

The score remained that way until late in the fourth quarter. That’s when Wray cut it to 12-8 with 5:33 following an interception return for a touchdown.

Witzel and Burton then hooked up again for a second time, this one from 30 yards with 35 seconds left, to account for the final margin.

With the win, Burlington is now 1-0 in conference play — along with No. 1 Limon and No. 7 Holyoke, who also won on Friday night.

    3A: Niwot 20, Eagle Valley 14

    (@niwotathletics/Twitter)

Niwot football is now 3-2 after a 20-14 win over Eagle Valley. The Cougars ended a 19-game losing streak earlier in the year.

“Our kids have worked really, really hard, and it’s almost overwhelming at times for what they’ve sacrificed to try to get to this point,” coach Jeremy Lanter told the Scoreboard Show. “The rotating coaches they’ve had in that program, it’s nice to have some consistency and have some kids buy into that consistency.”

On Friday, Julian Molina rushed for two touchdowns for the Cougars, and Eric Ruiz also scored on the ground.

This is just the second time since 2008 that the team has won three games in a season.

“It is so important,” Lanter said of winning games. “Especially when you’re trying everything you can to keep kids motivated and inspired when they know that they’re looking at a 19-game losing streak. Especially for them to be chipping away at that, and they continue to pick up the hammer and pound the stone, and try to give themselves the best opportunity. But winning helps. Winning doesn’t fix everything, but it certainly does help.”
