4A volleyball: Lewis-Palmer downs Palmer Ridge; claims fourth straight title

DENVER — The echoes of the scoring celebrations reverberated throughout a mostly empty Denver Coliseum. The remaining onlookers glanced at the east side of the floor. Lewis-Palmer was still playing, trying to close out the final match of the night.

Trying to win a fourth consecutive Class 4A volleyball championship.

Throughout the season, the Rangers overcame doubt and lowered expectations. On Saturday alone, they overcame a 2-0 deficit to Coronado. They overcame a coaching goof to start the championship match. At the end of the night, they stood exactly where they’re used to standing; with championship gold in their hands.

For the fourth year in a row and the sixth time in seven years, Lewis-Palmer is the 4A champion of volleyball. They became champions by winning the battle of Monument and beating rival Palmer Ridge 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 15-9.

“I think this showed our mental maturity,” senior Dani Norman said. “I think every girl on this team has worked so hard to not only improve their skills, but to improve their mentalities. We’ve learned how to adjust quickly instead of getting down on ourselves.”

The slow start to the match was prompted by a genuine mistake by coach Wade Baxter. He flipped two numbers on his rotation card and the mistake cost the Rangers (21-8 overall) well into the set.

“I just transposed two numbers,” Baxter said. “I’ve been putting the line up in that way all year but we should’ve caught it at the beginning. That’s on me.”

He was quick to point out that it wasn’t the reason that the Rangers dropped the set. He thought the Bears (21-9) battled through that first set and earned every bit of that win.

But once the weight of the mistake was off and the team was able to play freely in that second set, a glimpse of the L-P team that most in the Coliseum were expecting came out. Norman and Maggie Masters were swinging hard, converting on clutch kills and trying to be equally as dangerous when blocking. They jumped up to a 2-1 lead after the third set and felt at ease because they knew they were going after something they wanted and something they believed they could get.

“We were willing to fight harder,” Norman said. “We wanted it more. I said that to my team. Nobody wants it as much as us because we have such big shoes to fill. And we felt that we had to do it this year.”

The Bears battled and took the fourth set to even the match and send it to round five where so much was on the line. League bragging rights, town bragging rights and state bragging rights were all balled into whomever could score 15 points first.

“I think we just needed to like be disciplined in the little things and make sure that we didn’t like get too overwhelmed with how tired we are or their crowd getting louder,” Gianna Bartalo said. “We just wanted to do the little things to make sure we were disciplined.”

They jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead and a big Norman kill prompted Palmer Ridge coach Trevor Sullivan to call timeout. A kill from Madison Wilson got the Bears the serve back, but they were never able to rattle off consecutive points until the set was out of reach.

A combined block from Masters and Peyton Burnett finished the match and set the Rowdy Rangers into a frenzy. During early season matches, a state title felt like a pipe dream. But in a Denver Coliseum that had already seen four championships decided – a time when the Rangers were accustomed to winning theirs – it very much became a reality.

4A boys soccer semis: Air Academy and Skyview to play for championship

AURORA — Experience played a big part in Air Academy’s 2-1 victory over Lewis-Palmer in the boys Class 4A soccer semifinals Wednesday night.

A fortunate bounce with just over two minutes left in regulation didn’t hurt the Kadets, either.

Mason Shandy’s pinball goal at 77:58 broke a 1-1 tie and sent Air Academy, winners of the last two state championships, to the finals for the third-straight season.

A direct kick by Thaddeus Dewing of the Kadets was rejected by a Lewis-Palmer wall late in the contest.

Dewing managed to regain possession and sent the ball back into the box. Adin Schwenke put a shot on goal that bounced in Shandy’s vicinity, and he banged home the game-winner.

“I was just kind of right place, right time,” Shandy confessed. “I was really thankful that Thad put that second ball in after hitting the wall with his first (kick). Adin went up for a nice challenge and it just bounced right in my way. I felt like it was a team goal.”

Shandy, a junior, is now three-for-three in semifinal wins with Air Academy.

“It never gets old,” he revealed. “Just the entire playoff run is so much fun. I am just so thankful we can go all the way again and experience all five games every year.

“I’m really excited for Saturday,” Shandy added. “It should be a lot of fun.

The Kadets tied the game 13:47 into the second half on powerful strike by Schwenke after a pretty pass from Dewing.

“There was a nice lay-off by Thad to Adin … two of our seniors,” said Air Academy head coach Espen Hosoien. “It was a really nice goal.”

Lewis-Palmer scored first at 5:59 of the first half when Tyler Prichard launched a long ball towards the net from more than 40 yards away. The ball eluded Kadet goalkeeper Travis Tygart, and the Rangers had an early 1-0 lead.

But Air Academy continued to play tough and created several chances throughout the rest of the game.

“Everybody just fought their hardest,” said Schwenke. “We were down 1-0 last year, too. We don’t panic. We keep playing the way coach has taught us to play every year. Just get the ball where we need it to go, get goals and go do what we need to do. Everybody just works their hardest; that’s the biggest thing for us.”

“There was no panic,” Hosoien added. “These guys have been through it before. We played three tough games to get here (to the semifinals). It’s not like we haven’t been tested.

“We always talk about playing the full game, regardless,” he added. A goal scored in the 78th minute is just as good as a goal scored in the fifth minute. It’s even better if it’s the winning goal.”

Skyview goalkeeper Brian Fierro was the big hero Wednesday night at Legacy Stadium.

Fierro made a diving stop of a penalty kick by Golden’s Joaquin Garfias with one minute left in the game, and the Wolverines escaped with a 1-0 win in the 4A boys soccer semifinals.

Skyview will now play two-time defending champion Air Academy in the title game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

After the game, Fierro gave an assist to someone special in his life.

“I’ve got to give credit to my Dad,” said a smiling Fierro. “He has been teaching me how to guess (correctly) on the penalties. He always tells me to go to my left, so I did.”

Luis Reyes put the Wolverines on the board first when he took a pass from teammate Roger Ibarra and sent the ball into the lower corner of the goal 5:37 into the second half.

“I had the ball out wide, and played it into Roger, one of our better players on our team,” said Reyes of his game-winning tally. “I made a run (towards the front of the goal), and I just knew he was going to find me. We have such a good connection. Once I hit it I knew I was going to score because I have been practicing that shot for a long time. It’s the best feeling.”

It’s a scene that’s all-too familiar to Skyview head coach Justin Thomas.

“Luis got the ball in the box and made a great turn,” he said. “I have so much confidence when he has the ball on his feet in the box. That goal was just pure Luis: turn, shoot … and he always finds the back of the net. He’s a very skilled player, he’s very smart and I’m just really proud that he was able to score for us. We needed it.”

Golden had several chances to equalize as the half went on, but their shots were either just wide, off the post or crossbar or saved by Fierro.

“After we scored the goal we had so much momentum but I give a lot of props to their team because they didn’t stop fighting,” Reyes added. “But we have a team that never stops fighting as well. And we also have a great goalkeeper. I have so much confidence in Brian. Before the penalty, I knew he was going to block it.”

Thomas wasn’t surprised, either.

“Brian has just gotten better and better for us each year,” he added. “Last year we got knocked out in the quarterfinals in the ninth round of PKs. I knew going into this year that practicing penalties would be a big thing for us to do. So we have been taking penalties at the end of every practice since we got our seed in the playoffs. Brian has seen hundreds of shots in the last two weeks.

“I had confidence that if he picked right, he would make the save.”

No. 8 Lewis-Palmer tops No. 9 Pueblo Centennial to advance to 4A boys soccer quarterfinals

MONUMENT — Prior to 2019, Lewis-Palmer boys soccer coach Brian Barkey had only seen his team advance past the first round of the Class 4A boys soccer tournament once.

With a win in over Mesa Ridge last week, Barkey happy to see the Rangers’ second trip into the second round under his watch. Tuesday against Pueblo Centennial, he was looking for a first-time achievement.

His boys delivered with a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs. Their reward is a trip to the mountains on Saturday to face No. 1 Battle Mountain to face No. 1 Battle Mountain.

“We challenged them in April,” Barkey said. “We asked them what they wanted to talk about in 10 years about this team. And they said that they wanted to make history.”

But in order to make history, they had to follow through with that goal on the field. Centennial had been ranked as the No. 1 team in the 4A CHSAANow.com coaches poll at one point, meaning that even as the No. 9 seed, it was common knowledge that the team was capable of coming away with a win.

That’s why it was so important for the Rangers (14-3) to strike first. An L-P corner kick in the 21st minute yielded no result, but it was the Bulldogs (12-5) who knocked the ball out past the goal line, giving the Rangers another shot.

And they saw something. The second chance ricocheted off the post and several feet before it shot past Centennial keeper Jesse Chavez and into the net. It was Tanner Kilgore taking the bow when all was said and done.

“we hit it high (on the first one) and the keeper kept punching it,” Kilgore said. “So we line drived it lower and then it hit the post and then (we) hit it.”

On the opposite end of the field, it was a welcome sight to see for keeper Aidan McGonagle. But he didn’t have a lot of time to enjoy it. The Bulldogs pressed offensively and tried to create their own scoring opportunities.

A free kick from about 35 yards out didn’t amount to anything, but a shot shortly after forced McGonagle to dive to his left side, fearful that the shot was good.

It sailed wide right, but it was an indication that Centennial was going to stay aggressive in the offensive end.

But the defenders held their ground and each time the Bulldogs looked to be on the verge of firing off a shot, the Rangers knocked it away or deflected it from its intended target.

“Our back line is a straight brotherhood,” McGonagle “We don’t fall apart. We always come together to secure a win. Even when our offense isn’t coming into play, we always know we have each other’s backs.”

He quickly noted that after the first goal, he knew the Rangers all but had the game in the bag.

“All we need is one goal,” he said. “One goal secures a win.”

He believes that can be the case on Saturday as well. Battle Mountain beat Montrose 1-0 earlier in the day so any hope of getting to semifinals at Legacy Stadium in Aurora means a successful trip to Vail has to come first.

But if there is one thing that the Rangers are not, it’s afraid of the number one that precedes the Huskies on the bracket.

“I know them very well and it’s not a problem,” Barkey said. “We’re confident.”

No. 8 Lewis-Palmer boys soccer cruises past No. 25 Mesa Ridge in 4A’s Round 1

The No. 8 Lewis-Palmer Rangers faced off against No. 25 Mesa Ridge Grizzlies in the first round of the Class 4A boys soccer state tournament.

Though the Grizzlies took an early 1-0 lead, it was the Rangers who came up on top, erasing two deficits and scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to win 5-2.

Mesa Ridge wasn’t getting much into the final third early on, but a header from junior JJ Dickerson in the 15th–minute gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game.

“Just working on set pieces and keeping it to the outside (were our goals),” said Grizzlies head coach Mario Sigala. “(We were) trying to penetrate them. They’re a tough defense so they came out the better team today.”

Mesa Ridge almost doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Rangers goalie Aidan McGonagle mistimed his punch on a cross. However, Lewis-Palmer was able to clear and ended up scoring on the counterattack via junior Charles Holland. Though Lewis-Palmer continue to threaten, the score was tied 1-1 at the half.

“They’re a very good team, Mesa Ridge is,” said Rangers head coach Brian Barkey. “They were very good, and they challenged us to do the things that we’ve been trying to do well over the season. What I spoke to the team at halftime about is ‘Can we just keep things simple?’ ‘Can we do the things that we’ve been doing all along successfully like defending well?’ because I feel like we were defensively a little bit disorganized in the first half. We missed a few early on and that tends to instill a little bit of panic in the tam and so we tried to just maintain calm.”

The game opened up a bit in the second half with both teams looking to take the lead. Mesa Ridge was able to take advantage in the 43rd minute, with senior Caleb DesBouillons running behind the defense and volleying home a high ball from senior Dorrien Hill.

As Lewis-Palmer pushed for an equalizer, Mesa Ridge’s goalkeeper, senior Kyle Costra, stood tall. Costra had 13 saves at the final whistle.

“Their goalkeeper is superb,” said Barkey. “The center of their team is superb. (DesBouillons) constantly moving and running posed challenges for us because we were a little bit disorganized.”

Lewis-Palmer was able to find an equalizer in the 59th minute, with Holland scoring his second of the game. Less than a minute later, junior Ethan Mann would give the Grizzlies the lead.

Senior Tyler Davis added another goal in the 67th minute and senior Nate Jeffson gave the Grizzlies some insurance with a goal of his own in the 73rd minute.

“I’m really proud of the team for being resilient,” said Barkey. “You look at the body language when teams go down, their body language changes and there were probably a few moments of that but then they got it together so (I’m) really proud of that aspect.”

“We broke down defensively,” said Sigala. “We weren’t tracking the runners and so it was one of those things where defensively when you do that, they’re going to penetrate you and that’s what happened.”
