  • The Bell still rings red as Pueblo Centennial football nips Central in overtime

    (Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

PUEBLO — Ray Robinson only totaled eight carries on Friday night. But his last two of the game will make him a folk hero at Pueblo Centennial High School.

Robinson carried the ball twice in overtime, totaling the 10 yards that the Bulldogs needed to retain the victory bell.

Pueblo Centennial left Earl “Dutch” Clark Stadium with a 14-8 win and, more importantly, bragging rights for another year.

    The bell still rings red.

“That game winning touchdown… it was a pain,” Robinson said. “It was hard and we pushed all the way through 100 percent. I’m happy. The team’s happy.”

Everyone wearing red at Dutch Clark should be happy. The Bulldogs (1-2 overall) scored on the first play of the game in last year’s meeting between the District 60 rivals. Things wouldn’t be so easy this time around.

It was a grind that took three turnovers from the Wildcats (0-3) before the Bubba Rivera was able to punch the ball into the end zone. The ensuing extra point try was no good, but Centennial was gifted two points three plays later as the fourth down snap for Central went over Vincent Vasquez’s head to go for a safety.

This was a far different path to take a touchdown for the lead than what Centennial faced last year, much to the chagrin of quarterback Pat Gonzales.

“I liked last year how we just went out and dominated,” Gonzales said. “This year, I like how we all stuck together like a family.”

The Wildcats looked to have made some productive adjustments at halftime as Nico Martin broke for a 18-yard run to grab some momentum. But penalties killed the Central drive and they couldn’t manage to put points on the board.

It was on just their second drive of the second half that they were finally able to chew up yards. Quarterback Marcus Duran connected with Martin for a 33-yard completion. The Wildcats faced a fourth down, but called a fake punt to keep the drive going.

Duran then broke for a 25-yard run that saw 15 yards added at the end off a personal foul. He would eventually hit pay dirt, getting the ball into the end zone to pull within two points. Martin converted on the two-point try, and suddenly the Central side of Dutch Clark had new life.

“Offense, defense and special teams, I’m proud of my guys,” Central coach Kris Cotterman said. “I love my team.”

With under six minutes remaining, Centennial was able to drive down the field, with Gonzales finding ways to break through the line and get first downs, and eventually get to the seven-yard line.

A 24-yard field attempt from Angel Agustin sailed wide-right and the game went to overtime.

“This is what we were built for,” Centennial coach Jeff Wilkerson said. “We did at camp, CSU-Pueblo does something very similar to that. You have to get 10 yards in four plays. We did very well at camp with that.”

    But they only needed two.

The second that Robinson got the ball across the goal line, his teammates and the Centennial fans erupted.

“(Being on the bottom of the dog pile) is not nice,” Robinson said. “I had to tell them to get off me. I almost died.”

But they piled on because he helped save the day.

Years from now, the story will be told that when he broke into the end zone, the Bell continued to ring red.

La Veta got a scare in its first set against Springfield. The Class 1A CHSAANow.com No. 8-ranked Longhorns grabbed an impressive 11-point win in that set, apparently setting the tone for the match.

But No. 6 La Veta bounced right back to win the next three and get a 14-25, 25-20, 25-21, 28-26 win.

  • Football roundup: Greeley West knocks off 3A No. 1 Longmont; game called early due to nearby gas leak

    (greeleywestathletics.com)

Greeley West football beat Longmont to move to 2-0 on Thursday night, taking down Class 3A’s top-ranked Trojans.

The game had a weird ending: It was called with 2:39 remaining after the stadium had to be evacuated, according to the Greeley Tribune, because of a gas leak near the stadium.

Afterward, Greeley West posted on its Facebook page that “small leak” had been capped.

“The site is now secure and safe, according to fire authorities,” the school posted. “Sorry for the inconvenience and interruption to tonight’s Greeley West game. The emergency response was quick and safety was secured.”

This marked the first time since 2009 that Greeley West, which plays in 4A, had beat Longmont. The two teams play annually, and Longmont had won seven-straight games between the two teams.

Longmont actually led 14-0 in the first quarter before Greeley West rallied to tie the game at halftime.

The Trojans again took the lead at 20-14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the game’s final 20 points.

Greeley West’s Derek West had two rushing touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score, according to the Greeley Tribune.

The Spartans are now 2-0, while Longmont fell to 1-1.

    3A/4A: Palisade 28, Montrose 27

The Bulldogs scored 22 second-half points to rally from a 27-6 halftime hole and beat Montrose.

Montrose, which plays in 4A, jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, but Palisade adjusted after the break. The rally started late in the third, with a rushing touchdown with 4 minutes to play in the frame.

The Bulldogs, a 3A program, got another rushing score early in the fourth, then took the lead three minutes later on yet another rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion.

  • Boys golf roundup: Heritage turns in three top-10 finishers to win Continental League tourney

Heritage boys golf had three top-10 finishers to win the Continental League tournament at Lone Tree Golf Club.

“I think the team played well today overall,” Heritage coach Nicole Poulos said. “It feels like their hard work and preparation that they did in the offseason is starting to pay off.”

Paced by Sam Blackwood’s first-place finish at one-over, the Eagles shot +25 to beat Regis Jesuit (+31), ThunderRidge (+37) and Highlands Ranch (+43).

“He’s started the season pretty strong,” Poulos said on Blackwood, who has been on varsity since he was a freshman. “He’s gone above and beyond my expectations.”

The Eagles’ Ben Carrington and Drew Downard finished tied for seventh and tied for ninth, respectively.

“It’s exciting to see these five guys,” Poulos said. “They encourage each other and they’re all friends, but they push each other to be better.

“I think we’re in one of the toughest leagues and it’s always a grind. It’s exciting.”

Highlands Ranch’s Andrew Davis birdied his final hole to match Blackwood at the top of the leaderboard.

Calvin McCoy finished a stroke behind the two to give Regis Jesuit a third place individual finish.

  • 3A girls state tennis: Colorado Springs School’s Griffin a four-sport athlete

GREELEY — It’s one accomplishment to be a four-sport athlete in high school.

It’s another to be a state qualifier in three of those — but to do it as a freshman?

Kate Griffin plays tennis, golf, basketball and runs cross country at Colorado Springs School. She’s a state qualifier in tennis, golf and cross country a freshman.

“The fact that I play so many sports is cool, and I think it’s cool that I can make it as a freshman,” Griffin said. “I don’t want to brag, but I think it’s a cool experience to be able to say that I went to state as a freshman playing 18-year-olds.

“I put a lot of time and effort into this, so it’s really gratifying and nice to have it pay off even if I don’t do as well as I want to. It’s an honor and a privilege to be here.”

The ability to balance school, four sports and simply everyday life speaks for itself in terms of Griffin’s personality and work ethic. She cherishes every opportunity and just loves to do it.

“I enjoy practicing. It’s something that I love to do,” Griffin said. “There’s really not a lot of time for other things that teenagers do. I enjoy doing it.”

And, it’s always nice to see the payoff from practicing day-in and day-out.

“I like winning. I’m going to be honest with you,” Griffin said. “I like the feeling of winning. I always play for that, I play because I like it, I play because I like competition.”

Griffin wouldn’t admit to a favorite sport — she just wants to be in the moment.

“I can’t pick a favorite sport,” Griffin said. “The sport that I’m currently playing would probably be the best answer for that. I enjoy every one of them, that’s why I play so many.”

    Now imagine there’s two Griffins.

Kate’s twin sister, Anna, qualified at No. 1 doubles for Coronado high school in Class 5A.

“My sister would be mad if I didn’t tell you this,” Griffin joked.

But, it’s yet another reason for Griffin to push herself even further.

“We’re so competitive with each other,” Griffin said. “We support each other so much in sports and in everything we do, but we always push each other for to go the extra mile, just for bragging rights.”

As for who has bragging rights currently, Griffin said she has the advantage over Anna.

“For tennis, I think it might be me, but we’ll see,” Griffin said.

Griffin lost her first-round match to Peak to Peak’s Trisha Somasundaram (6-1, 6-3). Somasundaram plays Colorado Academy’s Sammy Moore-Thomson in the semifinals.

“I gave it my best, she’s just super consistent,” Griffin said. “She places the ball extremely well and she hits it hard. I couldn’t do anything about it, but she’s a great player and she figured it out.”

Griffin has a shot with play-backs to get back in the tournament, but for now, it’s on to the next sport.

“That feeling that you accomplished something is a really nice feeling,” Griffin said. “I’m proud that I can say that I went to states as a freshman. Just the feeling that you did this — you can cherish it forever.”

Three teams tied for lead after day one

After day one of the first-ever Class 3A state tennis tournament, there is a three-way tie at the top.

Colorado Academy, D’Evelyn and Dawson are all tied for first with 16 points. Holy Family follows with 14.

Freshmen made a splash in the No. 1 singles spot as Steamboat Springs’ Mae Thorp upset Conifer’s Hailey Janson and Holy Family’s Julia Giltner. She’ll face Eaton’s Myiah Scott.

Sammy Moore-Thomson, of Colorado Academy, made her way to the semifinals with ease, losing just two games overall.

The two freshmen could meet in the No. 1 singles final, should they win Friday.

Angi Reed/Taylor Whatley were dominant for D’Evelyn into the No. 1 doubles semifinals. They’ll play Ellie Beeck/Alexa Rinard (Dawson).

Matched up on the other side of the bracket are Eaton’s Courtney Leafgren/Shelby Naill and Colorado Academy’s Amelia Lochhead/Hope Cherubini.

Colorado Academy stayed in the mix in No. 2 singles with Savannah Mease moving on. Mease plays University’s Camille Krammer.

Steamboat Springs’ Maddie Thompson is matched up against Dawson’s Bridget Bell.

D’Evelyn again broke into the semifinals with No. 2 doubles. Cammy Lee and Elisa Dean will face Aspen’s Karina Keller and Grace Ferguson.

Maren Steiner/Caroline Smolky and Allie Blank/Isabelle Shehan, Dawson, will square off for Holy Family and Dawson.

In No. 3 singles, it’s Dawson’s Maggie Berry vs. Holy Family’s Lindsey Bovine and Colorado Springs Christian’s Nicole Pei vs. Rachel Molnar of D’Evelyn, who beat Colorado Academy’s Amanda Funk.

The No. 3 doubles semifinal field is set as Dawson’s Aria Barbour/Quin Ramos play D’Evelyn’s Maggie Hime/Olivia Sanders, while Colorado Academy’s Ann-Claire Lin/Lila Arnold face Leah Schwartz/Camilla Ruiz of Holy Family on the other side.

Charity Perks/Keri Jennings (D’Evelyn) cruised to the semifinals of No. 4 doubles. They’ll get Holy Family’s Lexi Licata/Kate Diamond.

On the other side, Sydney Booth/Mikaelee Salberg of Eaton play Alexandra Ford/Story Wolf-Tinsman of Colorado Academy.

The 2017 all-state girls swimming teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

These teams were created based upon results at the state meet.

Swimmers of the year were selected based upon the number of team points they produced at the state meet. This means that they received the full amount of team points from individual events they swam in, as well as one-fourth of the total points earned by the team in relays they swam in.

Finally, in order to be considered for swimmer of the year, athletes must first have made the all-state team by winning in a championship.

Divers of the year were selected by finish at the state meet, as were coaches of the year.

  • Aspen girls swimming wins first ever 3A championship

THORNTON — Aspen girls swimming won the first-ever Class 3A girls swimming and diving championships.

Saturday, the Skiers proved they’re swimmers too. They added the 3A girls swimming title trophy to their case — it’ll sit neatly next to the seven girls skiing championship trophies. This is the 19th championship overall for the school.

“It’s unbelievable, I’m overwhelmed. These girls worked so hard, they love eachother and it showed,” Aspen coach Kathleen Callahan said. “We’re a tiny team, we have eight girls here and I’m just ecstatic. We made history, who gets to say that?”

Kennidy Quist and Davy Brown led the Skiers as they racked up 209 points. Quist swam and won the 50 and 100 freestyle after coming in second in both events at last year’s 4A meet. Quist had times of 23.50 and 50.33 in the 50 and 100 freestyles, respectively.

Brown swam in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.37. Counting wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, that’s seven medals between the two Aspen swimmers.

“It’s everything I could have hoped for to end my high school career. To end with four wins is what every senior wants to do,” Quist said. “To have all these other girls around me and this team to support me that is so small, yet can accomplish so much, it means the world to me.

“Hopefully this just propels us forward and we can continue to do better and better.”

Also in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay for Aspen were Emily Driscoll and Hannah Freeman. Aspen turned in times of 1:48.65 and 3:35.05.

St. Mary’s Academy came in second with 187 points behind an outstanding effort from Alex Reddington. Reddington swam in four events: the 200 free, 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

She said the transition from the 200 medley relay right into the 200 free was a little tough, but that it was part of the sport.

Reddington won her individual events, defending her title in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly which she won at the 4A level. In the 200 freestyle, she won by almost five seconds with her time of 1:48.60. Her 100 butterfly time, 54.09, would have been good for second place at Friday’s 5A championships.

“I’m really pleased with both of those,” Reddington said. “It would have been great to compete against (5A girls) but there were some amazing girls here today and it was great to swim against someone new.”

Glenwood Springs took third with 173 points.

The Demons’ Lauren Fetzko improved dramatically from her preliminary time in the 200 individual medley to win the race over Brown, the favorite. Fetzko improved her time by 7.19 seconds to jump from fourth to first.

Pueblo Central diver Kaylee Eakman won the 3A dive championship with a score of 441.30 after she finished eighth in the 2016 4A meet.

“I don’t even know what to say. I’m speechless,” Eakman said. “It means so much, I’ve worked hard all four years for this. I’ve had two knee surgeries — I’ve had two setbacks — but all this hard work has payed off. I came back and knew I wanted to win my senior year.”

Eakman stood at the back of the diving board staring ahead and took a deep breath. She walked slowly forward, jumped once, twice, and a third time before launching into the air, rotating backwards stick straight with her arms spread and gliding into the water feet first.

The dives continued to get better as she zoned in. Another dive saw Eakman twist backwards tightly bound and break the water hands first, making a minimal splash.

“I didn’t really think about it too much because I psych myself out,” Eakman said. “I just took it one dive at a time.”

Eakman did hit the board with her foot on her reverse dive, but came away with the win.

“I leaned forward a little bit,” Eakman said. “I knew I was going to hit it, so I just prepared for it.”

St. Mary’s Retta Smith slid into second place with 389.50. Kent Denver’s Campbell Patteson took third with 372.60.

In the 500 freestyle, Abbey Selin won the race for D’Evelyn by 9.61 seconds with a time of 5:01.15.

Directly after, in the 200 free relay, Pueblo County’s time of 1:41.06 was good for first place. D’Evelyn came in second with 1:42.46.

In the 100 breaststroke, it was Pueblo County again as Amanda Blickensderfer turned in a time of 1:05.26.
