With rain in the forecast, baseball regionals and districts will have the option of playing Sunday

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

Rain, as per usual, is about to mess with the spring sports postseason.

Baseball’s regionals in classes 1A, 3A, 4A and 5A are slated to start on Saturday, and some districts in 2A will also be in action. The only problem is that Saturday’s forecast is also calling for a high chance of rain in most parts of the state. In addition, rain is forecast overnight on Friday, meaning fields may already be wet before Saturday’s moisture arrives.

As such, should any regionals or districts not be able to complete play on Saturday, games will be played on the first available date. That includes Sunday as an option, according to CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann.

“Should weather postpone us, the host schools will have the latitude to meet the needs of the schools involved in the tournament,” said Borgmann, who administers baseball. “That includes Sunday and Monday as an option, and adjusting the recommended time schedule.”

Borgmann added that the daily pitch count rules remain in effect, regardless of when the regionals or districts are played.

Any changes to the dates of play will be updated on the brackets on CHSAANow once known.

The 3A, 4A and 5A regional baseball brackets will be seeded and released on Wednesday. 1A’s regional/state bracket was posted on Monday.

The 1A state baseball championship is scheduled for May 17, while the state tournaments are scheduled to begin on May 18 in 3A, 4A and 5A. The 2A regionals are May 18-19.

4A baseball: Valor advances before rain suspends play and changes schedule

(Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

LAKEWOOD — Valor Christian punched its ticket to a key game in the Class 4A baseball tournament on Monday. Evergreen and Thompson Valley were trying to do the same before rain rolled into All-Star Park and caused play to be suspended.

The Cougars led the Eagles 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth before the field at All-Star Park was left unplayable because of the rain. By the time the teams left the stadium, there was standing water on the infield.

And so the 4A portion of the bracket that was to be played at All-Star Park on Tuesday will now move to Metro State.

(Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

The schedule is below. All times are approximate after the first game, because they depend on when the prior game finishes:

  • 10 a.m. — Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista finish their game that was suspended in the 5A tournament.
  • 10:30 a.m. — Evergreen and Thompson Valley will resume their game from 4A. Evergreen leads 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • 11:30 a.m. — Pueblo West vs. Thomas Jefferson in 4A.
  • 2 p.m. — The loser of the 10:30 a.m. game will play the winner of the 11:30 a.m. game.
  • 4:30 p.m. — The winner of the 10:30 a.m. game will play Valor Christian.

The 4A games on the other side of the bracket will remain at Machebeuf. Those are:

  • 10 a.m. — Golden vs. Air Academy.
  • 12:30 p.m. — Winner of the 10 a.m. game vs. Silver Creek.

Valor Christian beat Pueblo West 2-1 and Silver Creek 6-3 to advance in the winner’s bracket. Evergreen edged Air Academy 1-0, while Thompson Valley rallied to beat Golden 9-8 in the first round.

The 4A tournament was already moved from its original Friday/Saturday schedule by a snow and rain storm on Thursday that left fields unplayable until Monday.

The 4A bracket has been updated to reflect the schedule changes.

Second 3A baseball site moved to Silver Creek HS

The second site for the Class 3A state baseball tournament games has been moved from Niwot High School to Silver Creek High School due to field conditions.

Games are on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, pushed back by snow, rain and wet fields.

The following memo was sent out to schools this morning:

Due to the condition of the fields, Niwot will no longer be the second site for 3A baseball Tuesday and Wednesday.  The new site will be Silver Creek High School. Chase McBride from Niwot will still be the site director at Silver Creek. Silver Creek does have batting cages that will be available for use.

The 3A bracket has been updated to reflect this change.

Second weekend schedule released for state baseball

The dates for the second weekend of the state baseball tournaments were released on Sunday morning.

They were initially held to see how the first weekend would play out following postponements. With those dates now set — the 2A tournament started Saturday, 5A begins Sunday, 4A starts Monday, and 3A begins Tuesday — the CHSAA office has finalized the dates for the second weekend.

The result is the 2A, 4A and 5A tournaments will remain on the original dates, with slight time alterations, while 3A will move back one day.

Here’s the schedule:

  • 2A: Saturday at Runyon Complex in Pueblo. Semifinals at 9:30 a.m. and noon; championship at 2:30 p.m.
  • 3A: Saturday and Sunday at Butch Butler Field in Greeley. Games on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with games on Sunday at 10 a.m., and, if necessary, 12:30 p.m.
  • 4A: Friday and Saturday at Metro State in Denver. Games at noon at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. and, if necessary, 12:30 p.m.
  • 5A: Friday and Saturday at All-City Stadium. Games at noon at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. and, if necessary, 12:30 p.m.

The 3A tournament was moved because of concerns over pitch counts. Pitchers who throw on Tuesday will now be available on Saturday, and those who throw on Wednesday will be available Sunday, according to the pitch count rule.

The change in days was not necessary in 4A or 5A because pitchers who throw the first day of their respective tournaments in the first weekend will be available on the first day of the second weekend. Those who throw the second day of the first weekend will be available the second day of the second weekend.

Each of the brackets have been updated with the dates and times:

Nucla won the 1A state championship on Saturday. That game, too, was postponed two days by weather.

4A girls soccer semifinals moved to Shea Stadium

Saturday’s Class 4A girls soccer semifinal games have been moved to Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch.

Times for each game remain the same, at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The games were originally scheduled to be hosted at EchoPark Stadium in Parker, but needed to be moved in order to accommodate Rock Canyon High School’s graduation. That ceremony was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, but has been moved to Saturday at 9 a.m. to avoid the inclement weather forecast, as well as the give them time to prepare the facility and remove snow.

Rock Canyon’s graduation wouldn’t be able to fit into Shea Stadium, which only has one side of bleachers.

Douglas County Schools district athletic director Derek Cheney worked on a contingency plan earlier this week to move the games if they needed to, and spoke with CHSAA assistant commissioner Bud Ozzello on Tuesday to communicate that plan.

“It’s the same size field, and there’s brand new turf at Shea,” Cheney said. “Colorado spring time, it’s hard to gauge all the time. We had a contingency plan, and had a little more flexibility for a graduation. We’ve been working on it since Monday and Tuesday, and were hoping for the best, but we were thinking it might happen.”

Valor Christian and D’Evelyn will play at 11 a.m. That game will be followed by Windsor and Evergreen, around 1:30 p.m.

“With inclement weather, we have adjust at times, and it’s difficult, but graduation at their home district stadium takes precedence,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bud Ozzello, who oversees soccer. “The pitch is the same, the goals are the same. Shea Stadium is a great facility.”

AURORA — The Class 5A boys lacrosse semifinal game between Regis Jesuit and Arapahoe was suspended Wednesday night because of lightning.

Regis Jesuit was leading 10-5 at the time the game was suspended.

After conferring with teams and officials, CHSAA commissioner Paul Angelico determined that it was best to send the players and spectators home and finish the game Thursday morning.

The game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Stutler Bowl.

“Its a school night and we had two groups of students gathered together underneath the bleachers,” Angelico said. “The weather tends to be better at the Stutler Bowl and we typically don’t get lightning in the mornings.”

When the game resumes, there will be 7:26 remaining on the clock.

There will be no entrance fee for anyone wanting to see the ending of the game.

2A girls soccer semifinals: Dawson and Front Range Christian game suspended by weather

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — The second Class 2A girls soccer semifinal game between Dawson School and Front Range Christian was suspended before play could be completed on Wednesday.

The two teams were scoreless in the second half when play was stopped due to lightning in the area. They waited 45 minutes, but the storm hovered in the area of All-City Stadium, where the game was being played.

As the night wore on, and teams tried to wait out the delay, both schools agreed postpone the game to Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Denver Christian.

Play will resume with 31:52 remaining in the second half. Dawson has the ball on the opposing 15-yard-line, as marked on the football field. There will be no entrance fee.

In the first 2A semifinal, Denver Christian beat Fountain Valley 6-1.

State track meet postponed to two-day schedule on Saturday and Sunday

Note: This story was updated at 11:43 a.m

LAKEWOOD — The state track and field championships have been postponed due to the storm that blew in overnight, and left snow on the infield and track at Jeffco Stadium.

The storm is expected to last through Friday, making it prohibitive to run any events. As a result, the state meet has been moved to a two-day schedule, and will run on Saturday and Sunday.

“This snow came earlier than any forecast we’d seen,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, who administers track.

Early Thursday morning, track’s games committee met at Jeffco Stadium and made the decision to postpone the first day of events because track and field conditions on site wouldn’t allow for safe competition.

That committee continued to meet through the morning on Thursday to discuss further plans. By late morning, they came to the conclusion that Friday would not be an option, either.

Any athlete knowing they will scratch and not participate in any event needs to notify Jenn Roberts-Uhlig via email by Friday at noon. At that time, the meet will be reseeded and new heat sheets will be posted by Friday afternoon.

Details on how the meet will run:

  • The revised schedule has a time slot at 11:50 a.m. on Sunday to honor those seniors who will be missing their graduation. They are encouraged to wear caps and gowns. Their coaches must check in to the inquiry table in order to participate.
  • There will be no prelims in running events. All events will be transitioned into timed finals.
  • Field events will have four throws and jumps, without prelims. All will be finals. Judges will adjust and move participants as needed, and/or consolidate from two flights to one flight.
  • Adjustments may be made for the starting heights of the pole vault and high jump to accommodate weather conditions and the number of participants.
  • In the high jump, there will be two-inch increments until one jumper remains. He or she will determine the heights.
  • Pole vaulters will have six-inch increments until one jumper remains. He or she will determine the heights.
  • The uniform rules will be enforced without exception.
  • Relay participants are not needed until teams turn in their relay card with the clerk. Therefore, they may make changes prior to check in for that race. Relay cards are in packs, and can be picked up at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
  • Gates will also open to athletes at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. General public can enter at 7 a.m. on both days.
  • The Unified/Paralympic and Special Olympic races will be combined into one event of a 100-meter dash at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

State baseball games postponed by weather; 2A-5A affected

(Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)

The state baseball games scheduled for Friday in 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A have all been postponed.

The storm that blew in overnight Thursday has left the fields unplayable for Friday, leaving standing water. As a result, all games have been pushed back at least one day.

Here are the most recent updates for each classification:

  • The 3A and 4A tournaments will not resume until at least Monday.
  • The 5A tournament has been moved to a Sunday/Monday schedule.
  • The 2A tournament games have been postponed to Saturday and Sunday.

The following info has been sent to schools participating in the state baseball tournament:

Initially, all games for Friday have been postponed to at least Saturday with same schedule and times. All due to poor field conditions.

We will update you throughout the day as more postponements are anticipated.

Class 1A: Championship game will be played as planned on Saturday, time to be determined when the Class 5A schedule has been set.

Class 2A: Heavy rain last night created the need for a minimum of one day’s postponement because of the field conditions at Runyon Complex in Pueblo. All schedules will shift one day. Additional postponements may be needed.

Class 3A: The earliest anticipated resumption of play will be Monday, May 22, and that may be adjusted. Currently, Northern Colorado has received more than 2 inches of rain, with more expected through today and into tomorrow. Additional extensions may be required.

Class 4A: The earliest anticipated resumption of play will be Monday, May 22, and that may be adjusted. There is standing water on both fields currently, with more precipitation anticipated through tomorrow. Additional extensions may be required.

Class 5A: The new schedule for the 5A tournament will be Sunday, May 21, and Monday, May 22. Game times and site locations (Metro State and All City) will remain the same as on the current bracket.

Decisions on the dates for the second weekend of the state tournaments will be made after the first weekend completes play.
