Football roundup: No. 1 Kent Denver beats No. 4 La Junta in state title rematch

After failing to beat La Junta twice last year, Kent Denver needed this one. And with a late field goal, the top-ranked team in the Class 2A CHSAANow.com football poll got it.

The Sun Devils came away with a 10-7 win over the Tigers to somewhat avenge last year’s defeats, the latter of which came in the 2A state title game.

“Anytime you lose the state championship game you have a bad taste in your mouth,” Kent Denver coach Scott Yates said. “All our kids and coaches wanted to try and erase it.”

The win is the 319th for Yates, who remains tied with West Grand’s Chris Brown for the most in state history.

The Tigers (3-1 overall) jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

But the lead wouldn’t hold.

Kent Denver (4-0) was able to tie the game before halftime and the two teams came out unwilling to give each other any more points.

Still locked in a 7-7 tie, it was Kent Denver who would get the edge as Quinn Voboril kicked a late field goal which proved to be the game winner.

“We had to stop them in order to get the ball with enough time to go down the field. That created a little momentum for us,” Yates said. “It gives you an uplift and said let’s do something with it. We marched the ball down the field pretty well.”

The Sun Devils open league play next week when they hit the road and travel to Elizabeth. The Tigers also begin league play next week, hosting TCA.

8-man: (8) Hoehne 44, (2) Daypsring Christian 37

Hoehne built a 22-8 lead at halftime, but Dayspring Christian did everything possible to make up ground in the second half. But 22 points in the third quarter alone wasn’t going to cut it.

The Farmers were able to put up 22 more points in the second half and finish off the upset over 8-man’s second-ranked team.

Senior Jacob Yates had 202 yards and two touchdowns for Hoehne. Kyle Rowe also rushed for two scores, and Riley Hudson added one.

Christian Still, a freshman, tossed three touchdown passes for Dayspring Christian — all of them to senior Jimmy Fargo.

5A: (5) Regis Jesuit 24, (9) Highlands Ranch 0

It took Regis Jesuit almost a full 24 minutes of game time to find the end zone. But after scoring just once in the first half, the Raiders turned up the heat in the second.

They added two touchdowns and field goal to get a big win over a top-10 opponent.

1A: (3) Strasburg 14, (4) Limon 12

Strasburg handed Limon its first loss of the season on Saturday.

The Indians scored touchdown a in each the first and fourth quarters and that was all that was needed to move to 3-1 on the season.

8-man: (9) Merino 14, (10) McClave 8

Merino remained undefeated on the year with a 14-8 win over McClave. It’s the first loss for the Cardinals, who broke into the 8-man rankings last week.

Denver South’s Tony Lindsay takes job as football coach at Far Northeast

Fruita Monument Denver South football Tony Lindsay

(Ray Chen/ArrayPhoto.com)

DENVER — Tony Lindsay Sr. is making a move to a different football program in the city.

Lindsay, the longtime coach at city power Denver South, has accepted the job at Far Northeast, according to the athletic director at each school.

A primary factor in his decision was proximity to his home. He will be able to walk to practice, if wants to.

Lindsay was 78-33 in 10 seasons as the Rebels’ coach, including an appearance in the Class 4A title game in 2012. His teams had winning seasons in nine of those years, and made the playoffs the past seven seasons.

He will take over a program at Far Northeast that has been through four coaches in the previous four seasons, including a span of 3-27 over the past three. Prior to that, John Trahan had the program, known then as Montbello, in the 2013 playoffs.

Far Northeast is a co-op program that combines enrollment from smaller high schools on and around the former Montbello campus. The program, which plays in Class 5A, has a combined enrollment of 2,948 — which is the second-largest in the state behind Cherry Creek.

The plan is for Lindsay to meet his new team sometime soon, possibly next week.

Far Northeast athletic director Damian Brown said he hopes the hire brings some stability to the program.

“In every realm of what we’re doing out here, we’re trying to get back to the Montbello days of old, where our kids were competing at a high level,” Brown said. “With that, you’ve got to find coaches that are able to bring stability, discipline, structure to the program so that you can have that. We’ll be able to have that in coach Lindsay.

“We’re making moves to be able to find those coaches who have a vested interest in the Montbello/Green Valley Ranch area.”

Brown noted that the Warriors’ hire of David Bennett Jr. as boys basketball coach was in this mold. Bennett went 18-8 in his first season, and reached the 5A Sweet 16.

Next season, Far Northeast will have to replace a lot of their offensive weapons, but a number of players return on defense.

Lindsay leaves the South program in great shape. The Rebels, by most accounts, are the top football program in the city, and one of the best in 4A.

South athletic director Adam Kelsey said his search won’t be a geared toward replacing Lindsay and his staff, which includes a number of family members.

“It’s hard to replace something as unique as they are,” he said. “They have had a huge impact on our football program and our school. But we plan to build on the success they established and will be looking for the right leader to raise the bar further. ”

Kelsey said he plans to be interviewing candidates in the first week of April.

“The Lindsays established a program from top to bottom and our kids are used to winning and being successful,” Kelsey said, noting that the lower level programs at South went a combined 18-2 last season. “This should be attractive to our next coach as this is not a rebuilding project, it’s ready to go and he’ll have a whole school and community behind him.”

In terms of a candidate, Kelsey said, “We are looking for a coach who can continue to raise the bar for our student-athletes. On the field, in the classroom and the community, we will be seeking someone who is fully committed to the positive outcomes of educational-based athletics.”

A huge part of that will be continuing to attract kids to a school that largely depends on open enrollment: Roughly 60 percent of those attending South are school-of-choice enrollees.

Because of that, the Denver Broncos-sponsored Futures League has been a huge boost to city programs who use it as a feeder program — something the suburban schools have long since established.

“As a school, South is thriving and growing,” Kelsey said. “It has become an attractive destination for DPS students and beyond. We are not just limited to our neighborhood students as other schools might be. This can be an attractive attribute for a football program that also has room to grow.”

Brown said he hopes that Lindsay can continue the success he had via the Futures League at Far Northeast.

“The Futures program — any of our feeder programs, our Little League programs — is huge,” he said. “By bringing in the big names like Tony Lindsays, David Bennetts, that’s huge to the stability of our program, and those kids coming back to our program.”

Far Northeast boys basketball trending up with win over Lakewood

LAKEWOOD — Far Northeast boys basketball wanted nothing to do with a 3-game losing streak heading into the Class 5A state tournament that begins next week.

“I told the boys this was a playoff game,” Warriors’ coach David Bennett said after Far Northeast pulled off a 63-58 road victory Monday night against Lakewood. “I’m so proud of them for stepping up to the plate and get that victory.”

Monday was the final regular-season game for Far Northeast (16-7, 4-4 in 5A/4A Denver Prep League). The Warriors were coming off back-to-back 1-point losses to Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson.

The turning point for the Warriors was a strong second quarter where they outscored Lakewood 21-6 to grab a 31-22 halftime lead.

“It’s not surprising when we aren’t running a good offense and not defending,” Lakewood coach Daryl Johnson said of the disastrous second quarter for the Tigers. “I tell them all the time if they want things to end well you have to defend first. If you don’t defend first it’s going to be a long night. It was tonight.”

The Tigers (15-6, 9-3) finally started hitting some shots in the final 90 seconds of the game while trailing by a dozen. Lakewood senior Kolton Peterson hit back-to-back 3-pointers with under a minute to play and a driving layup by senior Dallas Bailey cut the Warriors’ lead to 61-58 with 18 seconds to play.

However, Far Northeast senior Aaris Bonds made a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left the seal the victory.

“It was about leadership,” Bonds said of making the key shots from the charity stripe after missing four straight. “Taking my team home.”

Far Northeast got good scoring balance with senior Russell Wilkerson coming off the bench for a team-high 16 points. Juniors Steven Goss and Malik Fofana finished with a dozen each. Bonds had 10 points.

“Everyone is depending on each other and the team is coming together at the right time,” Bennett said. “Lakewood is a good test. To pull this out at Lakewood, I’m so proud of the boys. This gets the momentum going.”

Far Northeast had a 7-3 record in its final 10 games, but the three losses were all single-digit losses to Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln and Denver East. The Warriors now wait to discover their path through the playoffs when the 5A state bracket is released Sunday, Feb. 19.

“I’m really confident in my team,” Bonds said. “I feel like we have a chance to do something big this year.”

Lakewood is still position to finish second in the 5A Jeffco League behind Chatfield (20-1, 12-0). The Chargers are No. 3 in the CHSAANow.com rankings while holding the longest winning steak in 5A at 19 games.

The Tigers have been on a rollercoaster ride this season. Lakewood played No. 1 ThunderRidge to overtime and defeated No. 8 Denver East handedly. However, the Tigers were swept by Chatfield in both league contests and suffered a last-second loss to Ralston Valley a few weeks ago.

“It was definitely not a good one to lose tonight. It was frustrating,” Peterson said. “I think we’ll bounce back these last two league games and get going again.”

The regular season for Lakewood ends with road games at Bear Creek (Tuesday) and Dakota Ridge (Thursday).

“That locker room isn’t very jovial right now,” Johnson said. “We’ll just have to figure it out tomorrow. Winning cures a lot of stuff, it gets you more optimistic for playoffs and that is what we need to do.”

Lakewood entered Monday’s game sitting at No. 16 in the RPI standings. The 16th spot is key with the top 16 seeds for the 48-team state tournament earning a first-round bye for the big dance that begins next week.

“It’s been kind of up and down,” Peterson said describing the Tigers’ season that had high expectations with plenty of senior experience. “I still think we can make a run no matter what seed we get.”

LITTLETON — Play defense, rebound, run and score — and repeat.

That was definitely the philosophy for Chatfield’s boys basketball team Tuesday night facing an athletic and dangerous Far Northeast squad. Chatfield (4-1 overall) used its defensive pressure and focus to control the boards on both ends of the court to run away with a 72-47 home victory.

“The press puts a toll on teams and that’s our goal, that’s our weapon,” said Chatfield senior Titus Reed, who finished with 17 points and double-digit rebounds. “They (Far Northeast) handled it in the beginning, but then teams get gassed and that is when we really take advantage.”

The Warriors (4-2) trimmed Chatfield’s lead to 15 points a minute into the second half, but a quick 13-0 run in the span of about two minutes pushed the Chargers’ lead to 52-25 midway through the third quarter.

“I was close to taking a timeout because I was not excited how we started the second half,” Chatfield coach Stephen Schimpeler admitted. “Good teams make plays and that is what we did in that situation. We found a way to make a play.”

Seniors Lucas St. Germain, Joe Miks, Mike Vrabel and Alex Beckley all scored during the run that pretty much put the game out of range for the Warriors. Seven different Chargers scored in the third quarter that ended with Chatfield leading 59-36.

“This is an incredibility mature senior class,” said Miks, who finished with a game-high 19 points. “We have a ton of composure. We don’t panic anymore. We’ve grown up a lot.”

The Chargers showed off their unselfishness on the offensive end with a balanced scoring attack.

Chatfield, ranked No. 10 in this week’s CHSAANow.com Class 5A boys hoops poll, came in with nearly five players averaging double-digit points through the Chargers first four games. Miks, Reed, Vrabel and junior Liam Mann all came in with more than 10 points per game. St. Germain was just under 10 points per contest.

Mann and Vrabel poured in nine points each while being key on the Chatfield’s team emphasis on controlling the boards.

“I was really pleased with how well we did on the board,” Schimpeler said. “Titus and Liam didn’t always get the rebound, but they always got a hand on it to keep it available. Rebounding was the key.”

Far Northeast’s Aaris Bonds led the way for the Warriors with 14 points. Bonds had six points in the first quarter, but made just one field goal the rest of the way.

“I love the competition,” Reed said of being matched up against Bonds. “He is a very good player. It was a pretty good match up.”

Reed is nearly averaging a double-double in points and rebounds through four games.

“Titus is playing at a whole different level right now,” Miks said. “Everyone knew he was good, but he is just shattering expectations. He is really the glue on our team. He gets boards. He is an inside presence we really need to get our guys going on the outside.”

Chatfield heads north to Fort Collins to face Fossil Ridge at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Chargers’ final game before winter break will be at Gateway next week.

Schimpeler said he is concerned about winter break. He has stressed to his players that staying in shape over the holidays will be key to keep the Chargers on pace to start the new calendar year.

“We are all expected to run on our own,” Reed said of the Chargers staying in condition over the winter break. “All of our players take that very seriously. This season means a lot to us. The first practice back will be tough. Coach will test us if we have run or not.”

Far Northeast hits the road again on Friday. The Warriors face Westminster in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
