The Look Back

Wednesday, Dec. 11

Started the week off with thegameofthenight.com Blake Olson crew at the Chap/Tridge “Tip Off Classic” Game 1 of the night Smoky Hill vs. Legacy. Defensive pressure from the No. 7 Buffaloes was the theme of the night.

Turnovers created break away baskets for Jalen Weaver (led scoring with 20) and Quinten Rock who had the Legacy defense on a “yo-yo” hitting deep three’s and then using the pump fake to get in paint for sweet floaters.

Folks! Smoky has been known for high flyers over the years and the young soph Anthony Harris Jr. is a highlight reel waiting to happen! He scored in double digits as well in Smoky’s 20-point win over Legacy.

Catch the full game here.

Game 2 at Chap on Wednesday featured the home squad Wolverines hosting the FNE (Montbello) Warriors. The Warriors were undersized and don’t have the depth Chap has but did they ever play with heart, especially early and were only down six points at the half.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Kobe Sanders and Aaron Jacob caught fire from behind the arc and the duo combined for 36 points leading to Chap pulling away in the 2nd half to 79-59 final. A really bright spot for the Warriors in the loss is another young soph 6’4 Travea Bolden, who led with 14 points in the loss.

Catch the full game here.

Friday, Dec. 13

Big time semifinal match up in the Tip Off Classic in Chap hosting the No. 7 Smoky Hill Buffs. Chap did not start slow as they did Wednesday night and came out with Kobe Sanders cooking early and held a six-point lead before Smoky turned up the heat on defense.

Numerous forced turnovers turned into transition buckets for Quinten Rock who finished with 23 points and Jalen “Da Problem” Weaver who poured in 21 points of his own.

Sanders finished the 5-point loss with 25 points as the game’s leading scorer and was joined by two “super sophs” in double digit scoring with Jeremiah Coleman and Joel Speckman scoring 14 points each.

Absolutely ZERO fear in the young PG Coleman facing the Smoky vets!

Highlights? Speaking of “super sophs” Smoky has one as well who the Fever crew now refers to as Anthony “highlight reel” Harris Jr! Check out a couple of his sweet dunks here:

The Look Ahead

Lakewood Grand Junction Central boys basketball

(David Harvey/ImageProPhotography.com)

Tuesday, Dec. 17

• Denver East, now up to No. 3 in this week’s rankings, has been off for a week. We’ll see if there’s any rust for the 4-0 Angels and leading scorer (23 pointper game) “super soph” Langston Reynolds as they travel to south to Palmer, who is 3-1 early.

• Centaurus is new to the 4A rankings coming in at No. 9 and they will get a test from Continental League Ponderosa who is 4-1 so far. Folks, if you haven’t seen him Centaurus has an elite senior in Owen Koonce who is worth the price of admission! Koonce averaging 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals this season.

• Also new to the rankings in 5A is Legend coming in at No. 9 will host 4A Broomfield. Legend averaging 62 points per game and Broomfield only 50. We’ll see if the Eagles can keep up with a ranked 5A squad.

• Fully covered 5A No. 2 Smoky Hill and their high flying stars. They face Northglenn this night and it’s safe to say there will be more “highlight reel” action for the Buffs in this one.

• Intriguing match down south as 4A No. 7 Golden travels south to Sand Creek to take on the 4-1 Scorpions.

• Possible game of the night type action here in No. 6 Eaglecrest hosting No. 10 Fairview! Junior Greysen Carter will need all of his 16 points per game for Fairview to keep pace with the Raptors Trio of Ruckard, Robinson, & Wilson who lead Eaglecrest to a 70 point per game average.

The Raptors return home from a 2-1 effort in New Mexico “Cleveland Invite” out of state.

Wednesday, Dec. 18

• Wednesday begins a hand full of our state’s top teams taking on some of the nation’s best at the Las Vegas Tarkanian Classic. Here’s our #BallFever tweet setting up the action and listing the teams/divisions:

Follow us on Twitter for all of the tourney action and updates! Valor Christian, Overland, and George Washington.

• Let’s get back to the in-state action! Not a ton of top games on a light Wednesday night in our 5A/4A big school action but

• Chatield visits the city at Denver South, who is still looking for that first win.

• Unbeaten Green Mountain goes to Hinkley, who is off to a 4-2 start.

• Arapahoe vs. Lakewood in a battle of two teams looking for their fifth win after Arapahoe recently helped Coach Pachner reach is 400th win of his career!

Thursday, Dec. 19

• Rugged junior Nolan Marold leads ThunderRidge in points and rebounds and he’ll have to play big while the Grizz are out of state at the Kruel Classic with first opponent Florida’s St. Thomas Aquinas.

• Mountain Vista drops from No. 3 to No. 10 in our poll this week and they start the Cherry Creek tournament vs 4A Thomas Jefferson.

Our Ball Fever buddy Blake Olson will have you covered all week on 9News Facebook Live:

• The Columbine Classic tournament starts Thursday as well and the No. 7 Rebels won’t be a kind host to Grand Junction.

• No. 7 Golden with a tough match vs 5A Fossil Ridge in the Power to Play tournament.

• Legend, ranked in 5A, tangles with Lincoln in the Creek tourney who is the No. 8 team in 4A.

• Denver East is in the Mullen Tournament and start vs. Chatfield.

• So weird to see a Regis team sitting on an 0-7 record early on and here comes Zion Ruckard’s 18 points per game for Eaglecrest so it gets no easier!

• Cherry Creek will find their groove now that the “football studs” are getting back in the swing and they start their tourney vs. Vista Ridge.

• Our state’s No. 1 squad Rangeview and Chaparral both have LATE night 9 p.m. action in Vegas!

Friday, Dec. 20

• A big matchup down South with No. 3 Cheyenne Mountain traveling to No. 5 Pueblo East.

• No. 3 Denver East gets Broomfield at the Mullen Christmas Classic this time.

• Fountain-Fort Carson’s turn to try and blemish Columbine in the “Classic.”

• As noted previously, it’s been a rough start for Regis and again it’s tough facing the high flying Smoky Hill Buffs No. 2 in 5A.

• A lot of our Friday night action is “TBA” due to the results of all this great tournament play … we’ll keep you updated via Twitter!

Saturday, Dec. 21

• We’ll see how the week goes and if Green Mountain is still unbeaten after a challenging week and they get it on with Denver South Saturday.

• Game 3 of the Columbine Classic for the Rebels! Can CU commit Luke O’Brien keep up a crazy 27 points per game and 15 rebounds?  Are you kidding me Luke?!!! 27 point, 15 rebound “monsta” double double average through their 3-0 start.

• Fever Crew likes this one! 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer hosting 5-1 Vista Peak. Nice early test!

• Need some 5 p.m. action? Denver East and tourney host Mullen get it on!

#CantWait to wrap up our local and out-of-state tournament action next week! Some of our best facing the nations best but there’s plenty of action to get out and see hoops fans, enjoy!

Ball Fever: Looking ahead at Week 2 in 4A/5A boys basketball

Grandview Rangeview boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

Welcome back hoops fans! Based on the early tournament and non-league action we will once again be in for a stellar year for big school 5A/4A boys hoops.

Due to a wonderful addition to the Trotman Family (Ms. Nailah Anne Desiree aka NAD) and the expansion of our personal business we won’t be able to spend as much # BallFever time with you as we’ve done in the past, but I believe the Digital Media Guru (Ryan Casey) and I have devised a new plan and format that you will like!

We’ll be doing more a “Look Ahead” preview of the top teams that will include the week’s new Monday rankings along with some tidbits from the previous week. And of course keeping an eye out for those “monsta” double-double and high scoring team/individual performances!

We’ve also been invited back as a guest commentator on thegameofthenight.com 9News Facebook Live action this year with our Ball Fever buddy, Blake Olson. Let’s get to it!

The Look Back

Friday, Dec. 6

What’s better than getting the year started with Blake Olson and crew at the first home game of the No. 1 team in the statee? Nothing!

The only issue we ran into was COLD shooting from our preseason No. 1 Rangeview and No. 3 Grandview. At one point the teams were a combined 2-of-24 from 3-point land and the stands were raging “get the ball inside!”

Grandview did establish some inside presence with their stud, UC-Davis bound Caleb McGill along with CSU-Pueblo bound Liam Romero’s penetration, but in the end the “Speller twins” Christian and Christopher of the No. 1 Raiders created some late game transition opportunities that sealed the low-scoring 38-37 win for Rangeview.

Impressed with Raiders senior Jovaughn Wright, who kicked in 12 important points displaying a nice stroke from mid-range. He’ll help the Raiders a ton this year in their quest to repeat.

Check out the photos here.

The Look Ahead

Tuesday, Dec. 10

    • Fossil Ridge, who came out of their early tourney 2-1, face 1-3 Poudre who will be hungry for a win.  Coach Matt Johannsen does a great job each year with the “GoJo Sports Tip Off Classic” tournament!
    • Check out the results, including all tournament team:

  • Denver East took home the title up north and sitting pretty at 3-0, No. 5 in the state. The Angels are young but they are stacked with talent with young sophs Langston Reynolds and Quise Davis along with junior Boston Stanton. Senior leader Patrick Steed is off to a blazing start at 17 points per game, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists! Perhaps even more impressive is Reynolds leading the team in scoring at 24 points per game as a soph! No surprise in the Fever camp, our crew has watched this young man closely since 6th grade! Tough duty for Mesa Ridge Tuesday, who’s still looking for their first win.
  • There’s a little nice non conference action between FNE (Montbello) and Chatfield. This may be a 9News Game of the Night so we’ll have a lot more info on these two next week!
  • Pretty rare to see a Regis team off to an 0-3 start but two of those losses came to solid teams in out of state tourney play in Arizona and the other loss to our state’s No. 2 Overland in a tight game. Boulder and Regis will be solid action with teams who have great fan support.
  • Eaglecrest comes in at No. 6 this week at 2-0. We know the “two-sport-stud” Ty Robinson who is one of the best overall athletes our state has seen along side another high flying junior Skylar Wilson, both scoring 11 points per game early but look out for senior guard Zion Ruckard, who is at 18 per game early. Cant wait to see these guys go. The Raptors visit Douglas County who is 2-2 tonight.
  • If you need some action down south there’s Pueblo West, who dropped from the 4A top 10, tangling with Sierra!
  • Mountain Vista advanced to the Coliseum last year, 2-0 early, and ranked No. 3, will face Dakota Ridge who’s being led by Gino Corridori’s 17 points per game and the highlight reel known as Taeshaud Jackson Jr.
  • In an intriguing possible “Game of the Night” type action we have a 5A/4A tussle in No. 4 Grandview visiting 4A No. 5 Lincoln. The senior college bound athletes from Grandview vs. some hungry seniors in Ty Foster and TJ Bamba for the Lancers. Bamba off to a blazing 30 points per game!

Wednesday, Dec. 11

  • Smoky Hill starts this week at No. 7 in the rankings. Hate to miss the A-Town/Denver battle they’ll have with GW early in the week but that should set them up just fine for this visit to Legacy, who’s looking for that first win. Senior Quinten Rock is leading the Buffs early at 14 points per outing along with junior Jalen Weaver at 13 points so far. Weaver, with a college offer from UMASS, picked up an offer from Montana State this week! Impressive for the junior stud the Fever Crew refers to as “da problem!”
  • Legend got 6 “Top 10” votes in this weeks poll but not enough to crack the top 10. Two young and gritty squads will battle in this game that has been moved to Cherokee Trail.
  • Part of the Chap/TRidge “Tip Off Classic” two teams surprisingly looking for that elusive first win in ThunderRidge and Grand Junction will help get the tourney action started! Keep in mind the Grizzlies two early losses came to top 10 squads. Coach Ortiz will get the Grizz right!
  • If you want exciting guard play make time to check out Chaparral. They dropped from our Top 10 this week but senior Kobe Sanders and exciting sophomore Jeremiah Coleman are catching eyes and making highlights already. They host FNE (Montbello) in the Tip Off Wednesday.
  • GW comes in at No. 10 this week and started season 3-0 behind talented junior Kendale Johnson leading the team in scoring, steals, and assists through first three wins. The Patriots will make a rare trek out to Mullen on this night.

Thursday, Dec. 12

  • 4A Thomas Jefferson came in at No. 8 in preseason poll but dropped out after a 3-1 start. The Spartans travel to 1-1 Longmont and the scoring machine Darius Hornbuckle is one to keep an eye on for the Spartans here.
  • As discussed previously, throw Regis’ record out the window (especially when they play at home) and the place will be rockin’ with No. 1 Rangeview in the house!
  • Cherry Creek is in at No. 9 5A and hoop fans know they’ve started without some absolute studs who just won a 5A state football title and will be ready to prove the trip to the Coliseum last year was no accident. While missing these football “two sport studs” Thomas Hawley has led the scoring and we have a “Freshman Alert” with Christian Hammond getting some minutes and leading the team with 2.3 steals per game. The Bruins are headed to Boulder.
  • The Canyon Crazies will be ready when Dakota Ridge comes to visit. Jalen Ashley off to a strong 15 points per game for 2-1 Jags.
  • Down south is strong in 4A once again this year and Harrison starting out at No. 3 this week and 3-0. Donta Dawson, a junior, pouring in 17 points per game and the Panthers head to D’Evelyn on this night.
  • Two of our state’s best in Graham Ike of Overland and CU commit Luke O’Brien (avg 26 points per game early) will be on display. Columbine right on the verge of cracking our Top 10 and they’ll get a chance to prove it this night.
  • Lewis-Palmer is No. 1 again in 4A and the defending champs. Will be fun to see this squad that lost a ton of talented seniors but they are back and Cameron Lowe is leading scorer headed into this match vs. Sierra.

Friday, Dec. 13

  • Ponderosa tournament action brings in No. 10 4A Pueblo East vs. relatively new school Regis Groff.
  • Up north?  How about a little Fossil Ridge vs. Fort Collins Friday night action?
  • Boulder travelling to No. 3 Mountain Vista is solid.
  • A ton of undetermined Friday night match ups due to tourney play and how things play out. We’ll keep you updated via twitter! Give us a follow:

Saturday, Dec. 14

  • Rampart takes its shot at No. 1 Rangeview if you’re in need of some 2 pm Saturday action!
  • Mead (No. 4) and Longmont (No. 10) are no strangers and it’s even better when both squads are Top 10! Trey Ward leading Mead in scoring at 18 points and almost 4 steals per game.
  • Regis visits Cherry Creek! Will the football studs have their basketball legs and return? Can’t wait!
  • Lincoln with a rare trip to 5A Mullen at 5 pm! The Fever Crew is liking the non-conference challenges for both schools early on.
  • 5A Doherty hosts 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer. Throw classification out the window: “braggin’ rights!”

Week 1 was a little light folks, but as you can see, Week 2’s non-conference and tourney action will be filled with good hoops!

Go out and enjoy! #BallFever

Ball Fever: A final look back at the 5A and 4A boys basketball season

Rangeview Chaparral boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Has everyone caught their breath?!!! What a tournament in both 5A and 4A the Denver Coliseum treated us to.

Yes, the Coliseum has its detractors as a Final 4 facility but the energy, excitement, and the joy of the players/coaches performing on that stage cannot be denied!

We took a little heat for what the Fever Crew called the “sexy matchups” that a lot of hoops fan wanted to see in Chap/Rangeview and Longmont/Lewis Palmer. No surprise, dedicated fans should pull for their squad and not want to hear that but as the Crew says: The Cream Will Rise and it did just that in these exciting finales…let’s take a look!

A look back at the live coverage of EVERY championship game here.

5A Championship

Rangeview Chaparral boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Our Dan Mohrmann was the man on the scene to catch the immediate aftermath of Rangeview’s first title in 34 years!

Our guy, “Coach K” of Keyser Images, caught the “one shining moment” photos of the Raiders championship.

With the Final 4 game and Championship game being 24 hours apart, there was some discussion on press row about which team had the depth to survive to taxing games in that short amount of time and quick turnaround?

The answer became clear as the Raiders attacked early and often vs. Mountain Vista and Chaparral. Obviously Vista and Chap were talented squads but the depth, overall length, and athleticism of the Raiders proved to be more than enough as they won both games by double digits.

Having some surprise players step up on our states biggest stage doesn’t hurt either as Obi Agbim, who averaged 6 points per game for the season, went a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc for 13 points in the title game giving the Raiders a huge boost off the bench. And what about Christopher Speller?!! How about 38 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots in the 24 hoursperiod of Final 4 and championship game! Speller also went 15-18 from the free throw line to seal the title for the Raiders.

4A Championship

Longmont Lewis-Palmer boys basketball

“Digital Dan” Mohrmann on it again with the fresh report of Lewis-Palmer’s “Dream of Perfection”

Jack “Action Shots” Eberhard throws elbows on press row and takes some nice action pics too! Here’s your 4A title shots.

Speaking of dominant performances and perfection the Fever Crew was thoroughly impressed with Noah Baca who was a perfect 8-of-8 vs. Holy Family from the field, scoring 20 points and game’s leading scorer in semifinal.

Surviving a 24-hour turnaround was crucial in 4A as well and in our eyes they have a 5A starting lineup. Not saying the entire squad would survive a full season of 5A ball but there are no doubts Baca, Ragsdale, Forrester, McCullough, and Joel Scott could toss the ball up with just about any other starting 5 in the state.

Tre McCullough brought energy and dunks, Forrester is very smooth around the basket, and Ragsdale was the leading scorer of the title game with 23 and game clinching free throws.

And Joel Scott? He’s special, a different kind of physical dude. When the game was in doubt or got tight there was no denying him in getting to the rack!

In two back-to-back days Scott gave the Rangers: 32 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots, flat out getting it done on both sides of the floor.

Final thoughts on the season

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Another great season we were treated to by our “awesome athletes” and dedicated coaching staffs. RPI, “sexy match-ups”, our home-town favorite…throw it all out the window and “lace em up” come tournament time and believe that the cream will rise!

It certainly did in our 5A/4A big school ball this year. Congrats Rangeview and Lewis-Palmer for magical seasons and endings.

In our “Waaaaaaaaaaay too early” look ahead: 5A Rangeview returns almost everyone and will again be a beast to deal with (EMAC doesn’t matter when it comes to this crew of players…they’re battle tested). In 4A keep an eye out for Mead, who has a group of current juniors who will be ready to lead and heard from a year from now.

For now, it’s off to the club ball scene and time to get it in! Couldn’t do this without the support of the “Digital Media Guru” Ryan Casey, CHSAANow staff, and our supportive readers.

Enjoy the off season, folks! Peace.

Welcome back, hoop fans to what we call the best time of year. Nothing like March #MileHighMadness energy!

As always, there were criticisms of the RPI system that sets our seeding for the tourneys but Ball Fever Crew believes the “cream will rise” and it certainly did in the 5A and 4A brackets!

Let’s take a look at how things played out and preview our Final 4!

5A Final 4 Preview

Chaparral vs. ThunderRidge

Overland ThunderRidge boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

It’s been said many times that it’s hard to beat the same team three times in a season. And that’s exactly what Chaparral is hoping to do when it faces ThunderRidge on a neutral court this time.

Chaparral beat a very game Cherry Creek squad 67-62 in the Great 8 to reach this point. Big man Bryce Matthews did a lot of damage inside scoring 20 points while on the perimeter Kobe Sanders and Tanner Giles combined for 23. Tyzelle Lewis took on the challenge of guarding “super soph” Julian Hammond and disturbed him first half until Hammond started to find some rhythm second half finishing with 21 and his running mate Myles Purchase scored 18 in the loss.

16-0 start? I don’t think anyone in the Coliseum expected the start ThunderRidge had in absolutely shocking Overland with that start to the first stage. The quarter ended up 20-5 and this game was never really in question as the Grizz shot 48 percent from the field, a hot 6-8 from 3-point land, and 85 percent from free throw line en route to 73-49 convincing win.

Senior Bailey Verk led four Grizzlies in double figure scoring with 18 and scored in a variety of ways. Young soph Garrett Arnold was dishing the rock to the double digit scorers as he piled up 6 assists with only 1 turnover. Big Graham Ike was the bright spot for Overland on a down day with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Chaparral Cherry Creek boys basketball

(Marlee Smith/CHSAANow.com)

As previously mentioned, Chap and ThunderRidge have played each other twice this season and the Wolverines are 2-0, winning both of the previous match ups by double digits. The Grizzlies’ leading scorer Austin Holt at 12 points per game will need to lead the way and have at least two others to join him in double figure scoring in this one.

Kobe Sanders will look to stay out of early foul trouble so he can find his rhythm early for Chap to have success.

It will be a battle inside with the Grizzlies overall size vs. Chap’s horses who will look to push the pace.

Tizell Lewis will be licking his chops to again be a defensive “secret weapon” for Chap and he will need to be allowed to play his defensive style for Chap to take down T-Ridge for the third time.

Mountain Vista vs. Rangeview

Rangeview Grandview boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Two teams that have been doubted throughout the season:

Mountain Vista didn’t step up in their big games against Chap and Regis.

Rangeview’s league play and lack of competition will hurt them come playoff time.

These are criticisms these two teams are fully aware of and ready to blast the myths!

Speaking of blasting myths, how about Mountain Vista taking that “no one can shoot in the Coliseum” belief and making it look silly this night. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field and needed every bit of it as Kenny Foster scored 30 for Smoky Hill and had Vista faithful just a little nervous as things got tight in the end.

Smoky Hill Mountain Vista boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

But Ben Grusing was the picture of consistency for Vista scoring 20 points and was 10-12 from the free throw line. Vista was 75 percent from the line as a team which was crucial down the stretch.

We knew plenty about Chap, Vista was hot, and ThunderRidge left looking like a totally different squad from the regular season, but many on press row stated they were most impressed with the overall team play and attack of Rangeview.

The Raiders have a laundry list of capable athletes and defending champ Grandview was missing one of theirs in injured junior Caleb McGill. That certainly didn’t help the Wolves, who with McGill is one of the few teams in the state whose roster you could look at and say, “yep, this stacks up nicely.”

The Raiders are aggressive in attacking the rim but also have a young man, Cade Palmer, who can stretch the floor! He only shot twice on the night but where he shot the DEEP 3s from is what forced Grandview to extend their defense and create lanes for Raiders slashers.

Quincy Jewett led the scoring for Rangeview with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in the impressive 10-point win. Never easy to take out the defending champs!

Rangeview and Mountain Vista are both 24-2, proved they belong here, and both average almost 70 points per game. We won’t have to worry about any slowed pace with Coach Wood and Coach Palmer here!

Watch out for Quincy Jewett to have a huge impact as the Eagles have struggled with teams who have height inside. They are many “above-the-rim” Raiders as well (none more high-flying than the Speller twins), who will make the rebounding, second-chance point game interesting.

The “big 3” of Grusing, May, and Pulling will be called on heavily for the Eagles, who will likely throw multiple defensive looks at Rangeview, daring them to hit from the perimeter (not Cade Palmer though…stay glued to him!) in an attempt to keep those studs out of the paint.

Is there such thing as a fast paced chess match? Can’t wait!

4A Final 4 Preview

Lewis Palmer vs. Holy Family

Lewis-Palmer Cheyenne Mountain boys basketball

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Holy Family has only lost four games on the season but one of those losses was to the No. 1 overall seed by 17 points back in December. Holy Family obviously has played strong ball since that Dec. 1 loss.

Arguably there’s no better team or “hot” squad than 26-0 Lewis Palmer, who isn’t only undefeated but also have a home win over the 5A No. 1 seed on their resume, as well.

Lewis-Palmer won their Great 8 game by more than 30 over Centaurus while Holy Family won by 11 in a revenge game over Mead, who was rolling before their loss to HF.

Joel Scott and the Rangers are no strangers to the Coliseum where he’ll bring his 19-point-per-game average.

The mid-range attack of Tanner Baird’s 16 points per game is what leads the Tigers. Holy Family hangs its hat on defense but allowed 60 to LP in their December match.

Tre McCullough and Noah Baca both scored 12 as Scott led with 21 in the first tilt. Matt Ragsdale did not play the first time around, and that makes the Tigers’ defensive task even greater!

Longmont vs. Pueblo East

(Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

Lewis Palmer isn’t the sole 26-0 squad! Don’t forget unbeaten defending champ Longmont, who unlike the Rangers who haven’t blown out all contenders. The Trojans have played recent overtime games, including their tight 1-point win over game Harrison on their home court in Great 8 play.

Pueblo East comes in on a four-game winning streak and taking down No. 3 seed Steamboat and Cheyenne Mountain’s scoring machine Javonte Johsnon in Great 8.

Pueblo East has won their last two elimination games by a total of 6 points. Battle tested, as well!

Longmont averages 70 points per game and that is fueled by Brady Renck’s nearly 8 assists per game! Beck Page is the recipient of many of those assists averaging 14 points per match for the Trojans.

Pueblo East is powered by Kain Medrano’s 12 points per game and Joe Padula’s 8 rebounds each night out.

Pueblo East will bring their blue collar, defensive mentality to the Coliseum to see if they can dethrone the champs!

Final 4 Thoughts

Talking on press row we always discuss the “sexy” match up for the fans and media. Looking at it that way the Fever Crew would be ALL HYPED for a Chaparral/Rangeview final…but we also realize there is “Highlands Ranch” prideful community who would love nothing better than a ThunderRidge/Mountain Vista all “H-Ranch” final! We shall see.

In 4A you couldn’t write a better script than 27-0 vs. 27-0 Longmont/LP rematch from last year. Many feel this has been destined since one year ago and these two top seeds have certainly played that way. But something tells up Pueblo East and Holy Family are just fine with the “unbeatens” getting all the attention which they hope can lead to a sneak attack!

Friday is jam-packed with intrigue, folks. Get out and enjoy!

Welcome back, hoop fans! Our CHSAANow journalists and photogs covered a tremendous amount of Round 1 and Round 2 action in our big school 5A/4A boys playoffs.

Class 5A

Chauncey Billups Region

Grandview Mullen boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

The overall No. 1 Seed is in this region and they looked every bit the part as they hosted No. 32 seed Fossil Ridge, who got here by beating Pine Creek 57-50. Chap enjoyed their Round 1 bye and also used this game to rest senior Tanner Giles whose out with an ankle injury.

Even without Giles the Wolverines attacked early and often on both ends of the floor with “in your face” defense from Kobe Sanders and “irritating” Tyzelle Lewis! The scoring was handled by big man Bryce Matthews who threw down unbelievable alley-oop dunks leading to a game-high 21 points which put him over 1,000 points on his career!

The Fever Crew was blessed with the opportunity to be a special guest of Blake Olsen on the 9News “Game of the Night” … catch the ending here.

Chap will face No. 17 seed Mullen, who raced past Chatfield by 20 and then earned a tough three-point win over the Continental League’s Castle View 59-56.

Isaac Okendane, the double-double machine for the Mustangs had another 10-point performance with numerous rebounds. They will need him inside and the sweet stroke of Christian Davis from the perimeter to keep pace with No. 1 seed Chap.

Speaking of keeping up, Mullen actually averages five more points per game than Chap at 68 per game and they’ll need their best stepping into the Wolverines house who are now 20-4, and unbeaten on their home court.

In the bottom half of the Billups Region the highest seed Fairview (No. 8) used their bye to take a peek at Broomfield who upset the No. 25 seed Palmer in Round 1. Broomfield’s magic that won the tight Round 1 match by four ran out as Fairview beat them soundly 69-48. The Knights have multiple players who can score in double figures and senior Mark Dolan led three with 18 on this night.

Fairview will get a rematch in their Sweet 16 round with Cherry Creek, whom they beat by five back in December at the Bruins’ annual Holiday Tournament.

But Knights beware, the Bruins are riding the hot hand of “super soph” Julian Hammond, who led them to double-digit victories over Doherty and at higher-seeded Columbine.

Hammond was unbelievable on Saturday at Columbine, scoring 27 points and taking on the challenge of guarding CU commit Luke O’Brien. Hammond is a top-5 guard in Colorado and that’s regardless of class!

Our Prep Hoops buddies were on hand to take in the performance:

Regis Jesuit Highlands Ranch boys basketball

(Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Our Ball Fever “favorite” in this region was Regis, who was on a tear, but unfortunately they suffered a HUGE injury to big man Matt Wheelock, who was not able to compete in the playoffs and Regis is upset by Highlands Ranch in Round 2. With Regis now out, it may push the No. 2 overall seed in this region, Mountain Vista, to a possible deeper run.

Rocky Mountain got by Liberty by seven in Round 1 and their prize was to visit Vista, who had only lost one home game all season. The Lobos were certainly up for the task and took the Eagles to overtime on their home court, but losy by 3. Ben Gruhsing’s 16 points were big the home Eagles.

Waiting on the Eagles will be a team from out west who we are eager to learn more about: Fruita Monument. We hear Fruita has some outstanding perimeter play and it was on display as they beat Greeley West by 17 with Marcus Labonde leading the way. Labonde averages 14 points per game for the 20-4 Wildcats, who head into Mountain Vista on Wednesday night.

In bottom half of this region Douglas County beat our beloved Warriors by 10 (solid season for the Bellos – FNE) and then had to face the highest seed Smoky Hill (No. 7). Coach Hardin of Smoky said that Douglas County came out with a defense devised to slow Kenny Foster and dynamic guard Quentin Rock, but this allowed the Buffs supporting cast to step up and Jordan Whittaker, Jalen Weaver (the super sophs) both responded with double digit scoring and Foster led all with 21 in the 17 point win.

Smoky will now get a visit from a confident Highlands Ranch squad that is playing well of late and as noted above beat a short-handed Regis squad in the final seconds by 1!

This is a rematch of a game Smoky won by 31 BIG ONES back in November and the Falcons will be eager to show their improvement … the Buffs looking to stay unbeaten at home on the season!

Boulder Grandview boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

In our preview we were clear that No. 3 seed Rangeview was the favorite at the top of the bracket, but Grandview has to be the fav to come out of this region.

The Raiders made quick work of Windsor, doubling them up 70-34 in Round 2 of this Region. No surprise the Raiders’ big man Quincy Jewett took his double-double streak into the playoffs, scoring 18 and pulling down 14 rebounds in the route. The Raiders now look to hold court (11-0 at home) vs. Fountain-Fort Carson.

FFC, the 19 seed, was led by senior Rashon Barron, who scored 16 in the Trojans’ win over Arvada West. Senior James Sanders added 15 in the 10-point road win over the higher seed Wildcats. KeyShawn Maltbia leads FFC with 17 points per game and they’ll need multiple players in double-figure scoring at Rangeview, which is averaging 74 points per game. The Trojans can put up points as they scored 95 in their Round 1 win!

Bottom half of this region is led by our favorite here, defending champ Grandview. We all know the champ will be a “tough out,” returning players who participated greatly in the last year’s title game. Boulder beat a talented GW team Round 1 but didn’t have enough to stay within 20 points of the Wolves, going down 55-32.

The team that surprised Grandview early in the season and handed them their first in-state loss was Rock Canyon. The Jags got by Northglenn by 22 points in Round 2. The Jags, who usually grind it out, were putting up the points this night, 77-55. Will they return to the “grind” style that earned the LOW scoring 37-36 December home win?

If they do, they’ll have to do it in the Wolves house this time around and Grandview is 8-1 in their house!

Eaglecrest Cherry Creek boys basketball

(Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Centennial Tough at the top of this bracket and it played out just that way with No. 4 seed Overland and No. 13 seed Eaglecrest taking care of early round business. These two are in for their third meeting of the season in the Sweet 16.

Overland got a combined 38 points from their studs Graham Ike and Hezekiah Swanson in their win over Horizon, who was close at the half, but the Trailblazers eventually pulled away by 13.

Eaglecrest found themselves in a rematch vs. Legend, who they beat early in the season in Parker in the final moments. This one wasn’t quite as dramatic as the Raptors were in full control late, ending the Titans’ season 75-67. This will be Round 3 of the Eaglecrest/Overland tussle and the Blazers won both previous meetings last month by double digits.

The Raptors will have to try to find some answer for Graham Ike on the inside…which is tough for any team in the state! Aaron Bokol and Ty Robinson of the Raptors are special players and will need extraordinary nights to get Overland in their house.

Don’t look now but our Ball Fever prediction of the “city vs. the suburbs” Sweet 16 match of Denver East at ThunderRidge has become a reality!

East had no problem Round 1 pounding Gateway and even without their Wyoming commit Kwane Marble missing they beat higher seed Ralston Valley by 19! Coach Carey has this version of the Angels hitting on all cylinders at the right time and we hope Marble is able to return for the coming matchup. Senior Caulin Swain stepped up in Marble’s absence, scoring 20 points, and what about “freshman alert!” Langsston Reynolds pulling down a “monsta” 16 rebounds at Ralston Valley?

ThunderRidge got DEFENSIVE giving up single digits in the first two quarters vs. Poudre. Senior Kevin Sax led the scoring efforts with a game-high 21. The match with East will be a contrast of styles as East will want to get out and go as they average close to 80 points per game vs. T-Ridge’s 57.

Expect some zone from the Grizzlies and an attempt to slow the pace…and expect the Angels to try and force that Grizzly size into a track meet. Classic chess match here and the wildcard will be whether or not Marble available for the Angels…this will be fun!

Cheyenne Mountain Lewis-Palmer boys basketball

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

No. 1 seed Lewis Palmer does it again, winning by 17 over Ponderosa who was obviously well-tested from their Continental League play. The 17 seed took down the 16 in Greeley Central’s 54-49 win over The Classical Academy.

Two of our top 4A players will see each other here as Greeley Central’s Jackson Hayslip, who averages 21 points per game, will see the Rangers do-it-all Joel Scott, who’s at 19 per game himself. The Rangers average almost 20 more points per game and Scott’s running mate Matt Ragsdale is coming off another 20-plus performance and can be a difference-maker here!

Some would call it a surprise in the bottom part of this region where Thomas Jefferson advanced to the Sweet 16 and will face the No. 9 seed Centaurus. The Spartans ended Wheat Ridge’s great season as a No. 25 seed, taking down the host No. 8 seed. Centaurus didn’t face as much of a challenge as they cruised past Eagle Valley by 18.

The Spartans scouting report will read: OWEN KOONCE! Fever Crew got to see this Centaurus stud in-person. He averages 18 per game and can score from inside or out. Speaking of scoring, the Spartans have a spark named Darius Hornbuckle who can “fill it up!” as well. Another fun game of contrasting styles. TJ trying to carry the torch for the city in 4A along with Lincoln.

Longmont Thompson Valley boys basketball

(Conner Davis/CHSAANow.com)

Undefeated defending champ Longmont is no stranger to big wins and this Round 2 victory by 30 POINTS over Discovery Canyon came as no surprise to those who know the Trojans’ fire power. They’ll see Pueblo Central, who also won big by 19 in their Round 2 tangle with Durango.

Nico Martin, who averages 16 points per game for Pueblo Central, will have to step up big for them to have a shot at slowing Longmont’s 70 points per game and 24-0 streak!

Bottom half of this region was a bit more of an unknown as the higher seed Glenwood Springs from the west came in as a bit of an unknown and Golden handled them easily by 18 in an upset of seed No. 26 over No. 7.

Alameda was on a special run this season but ran into “super soph” Donta Dawson from Harrison, who poured out another double-double with 19 points, 10 assists in that win.

Pueblo East Lewis-Palmer boys basketball

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

No. 46 seed Pueblo County knocked out 19 seed Evergreen on the road but couldn’t beat rival Pueblo East, who advanced in Round 2 with a five-point win over County. In another one of those “unknowns” in a team none of us have seen much of from the west Steamboat Springs (No. 3 seed) won by 31 over Canon City.

Pueblo East will come with their team approach in this one…very balanced squad statistically and Steamboat Springs couldn’t be more of a polar opposite as Mac Riniker not only leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game, he leads the team in EVERY statistical category!

Richard Tate Region

Lincoln Falcon boys basketball

(Jeff Tucker/jefferywtucker.zenfolio.com)

Holy Family is the recent veteran and successful 4A squad here and they beat an upstart DPL Northfield team, who is up and coming, by 18. Holy Family will face another squad with proud 4A history in Lincoln, who dropped Montrose 65-41.

Lincoln at Holy Family is one of the better matchups in any region of 5A and 4A. The Tigers pride themselves in defense and the Lancers have the horses to get out and go and make it more of a transition game. Tanner Baird, 16 points per game for Holy Family with his enforcer Helbig are tough, but the Lancers have a four-headed monster of Bamba, Felton, Foster, and Brown who can challenge any 4A squad if on their game. Did we use the “chess match” phrase yet?

Looking for the lowest seed still alive? Look no further than No. 44 Coronado, who knocked off Palisade by 3. Unfortunately, they will now have to face our Ball Fever “sleeper” Mead, who beat Skyview by 22 points.

Coronado is 9-16 overall but the exact reason we love this time of year! A team can unite in the end of the season and make an unexpected Cinderella-type run but knocking off Mead who is on a 20 GAME WIN STREAK may be a bit too much to ask from Coronado. Play it out on the floor!

Ball Fever: Previewing the 5A and 4A boys basketball state tournaments

Legend Chaparral boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Another fun and exciting season is in the books, hoops fans. Our final two weeks were full of overtime excitement, individual “monsta” performances, and leagues that came down to the wire, final games.

Let’s hope its a sign of what’s to come over the next few weeks!

As usual there was a little controversy we watched on social media regarding our final 5A and 4A RPI standings but thankfully our awesome athletes don’t play this “mile high madness” out on the internet … it will be settled on the hardwood!

Those who follow Ball Fever also know we don’t think this is a rare time for Colorado hoops, but a result of numerous factors leading to good basketball being played on our high school courts.

We saw numerous teams hold the No. 1 spot in 5A and 4A this season which speaks to the parity and high level ball being played.

The buzz about Colorado hoops is legit and we can thank a growing basketball community for that from our peewee rec leagues to competitive club ball, increasing individual personal training opportunities, and truly dedicated high school staffs.

The basketball product hitting the Colorado hardwood is improving and colleges of all levels are taking notice!

Great time to be a part of Colorado hoops … let’s get to the madness!

Class 5A preview

Chauncey Billups Region

Chaparral ThunderRidge boys basketball

(Kevin Keyser/KeyserImages.com)

Even after a late season stumble vs. Legend, No. 1 Chaparral comes in as the top overall seed. The Wolverines are joined by Fairview and Columbine as the other high seeds who have earned a bye and will get to scout their opponents in Round 1.

Chaparral has veteran leaders who remember the pain of losing earlier than expected one year ago to the eventual state champ and lefty point guard Kobe Sanders is undoubtedly one of the top floor leaders in the state as a junior.

Favorites: Chap is the clear favorite in this region but must be careful as they’ll play the winner of Fossil Ridge and Pine Creek, which are two teams coming in with lower seeds then they’ve had in the past but solid programs you can’t look past. Keep an eye out for an excellent Sweet 16 possibility of Mullen vs. Chaparral in this region.

Watch out for: We mentioned Mullen and though they’re coming in with a 14-9 overall record they have steadily improved over the season and have a sharp shooting senior in Christian Davis along with a 6-foot-8 power house in junior Isaac Ondekane who is averaging a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double for the season.

The Fever Crew loves postseason guard play, so in the bottom half of the bracket keep an eye on Cherry Creek, whose young studs at the guard position could give Columbine and star Luke O’Brien fits if they can get by Doherty.

Chuck Williams Region

Regis Jesuit Mullen boys basketball

(Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)

Mountain Vista, who comes in as the No. 2 seed overall, Smoky Hill and Regis are the notable seeds who have byes Round 1 in the Williams Region. Regis upset Mountain Vista at their place not long ago and are one of the hottest teams in the state.

The Buffaloes believe #KennyThingsPossible and the Smoky has proven they can play with anyone in the state if they’re hitting perimeter shots.

Favorites: Mountain Vista is highest seed and The Fever Crew has seen a lot of them, Smoky, and Regis in person. Regis has won 11 of their last 12 games and after witnessing them beat the Golden Eagles head-to-head with their inside and perimeter weapons of Carr, Wheelock, and Safieddeine, they are our Ball Fever Favorite in this region.

Watch out for: Look no further than Smoky Hill who has Foster’s leadership, Quentin Rock at the point, and a trio of “super sophs” on the wing who can heat up at any time. Also, Greeley West needs to “watch out” for Cherokee Trail, who is battle tested from the Centennial League and are better than that 47 seed makes them look!

Larry Farmer Region

Grandview Mullen boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

Rangeview pulled the top seed of this region at No. 3 and has an impressive 21-2 record with losses to Overland (in Las Vegas) and Grandview.

Speaking of Grandview, the RPI had them come in at No. 6 but believe when we tell you that they are far from the sixth best team on this bracket. The defending champs will be a tough out!

Favorites: Rock Canyon and Arvada West pulled first-round “byes” here as well but it will be tough for either to slow Rangeview or Grandview. However, one of Grandview’s in-state losses did come from the Jags early in the season.

That still doesn’t stop the Grandview Wolves from being our Ball Fever Favorite to emerge from the Billups bracket. Watched the defending champs in person at Eaglecrest last week and they have an extreme focus right now.

Watch out for: Rangeview hears it all the time that their league foes/competition may hurt them come tournament time but this squad is built a little different and will have a chip on their shoulder. Their non-league schedule was as tough as anyone’s and Coach Palmer will have them locked in for post season play.

Should it play out a Sweet 16 game vs. Arvada West could be a rematch. Raiders on a 14-game win streak!

Grandview Overland boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

Speaking of squads “on a mission” maybe no one gets more out of his roster than Coach Danny Fisher, whose Overland Trailblazers come in as the No. 4 and highest seed in the Smith region.

ThunderRidge, Ralston Valley, and Eaglecrest are the other squads with Round 1 byes in this stacked region.

Favorites: Overland is 17-6 overall and on a seven-game win streak. The inside/out tandem of Hezekiah Swanson and big man Graham Ike cements them as our Ball Fever Favorite in this region. The Blazers play extremely hard and the #CentennialTough home and away league has prepped them to make a run and keep their streak alive.

If there’s such a thing as a Favorite “sleeper” it would be ThunderRidge, whose overall team length can give teams fits who haven’t faced that type of size and athleticism.

Watch out for: Eaglecrest is limping into the postseason just a bit but senior guard Aaron Bokol and “super soph” Ty Robinson have what it takes to help a squad in elimination style play. Unfortunately, the Raptors could be in for another match with Overland if they both advance and that doesn’t bode well if it happens.

The Blazers’ size with Graham and Pena-Avilla is hard for anyone to deal with! And “DON”T LOOK NOW” but Coach Carey and Denver East are on a torrid scoring pace, have won seven games in a row, another DPL title and it wouldn’t surprise us at all to see the Angels in the Sweet 16 with a possible Coach Ortiz/Coach Carey showdown!

Lewis-Palmer Chaparral boys basketball

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

Lewis-Palmer’s season can only be called “HISTORIC” at 23-0! They have college bound seniors Player of the Year candidate Joel Scott, Matthew Ragsdale, and Tre McCullough.

They MUST have a fire in their belly for this years bracket after being so close last year only to come up short to defending champ and No. 2 seed Longmont, who is also 23-0 and on their own historic run hoping for back-to-back titles!

Favorites: Can’t lie, folks. If we made up a bunch of fluff here we’d hope someone would call us out on it! If a team upsets Lewis-Palmer from coming out clean from this region it would be an EPIC upset!

Watch out for: Denver Prep League will be following Thomas Jefferson and they could be the surprise here, folks. Wheat Ridge is another squad with a historic season that we have documented previously but the Spartans can cause some trouble in this region.

Defending champ Longmont jumps “right out at ya!” in the Brunson region. They had a late-season overtime game and that may just make them even more dangerous and hungry for the repeat, folks!

Favorites: The Trojans are expected to advance here. Calvin Seamons 13 points, 5 rebounds a game leads them and baseball stud Brady Renck is at a CRAZY 11 point, 7 assist pace per match!

Watch out for: Hoping we get the chance to see Harrison, who is 19-4 and under-the-radar in 4A and on a five-game win streak. Led by “super soph” Donta Dawson’s 16 points, 6 rebounds per game can be HUGE trouble as a 10 seed.

This is the region with the most unanswered question of 5A and 4A! The top-3 seed Steamboat Springs is an unknown to may of us as they play out west and their our some “southern squads” in Pueblo West/East and Cheyenne Mountain from the spring who can mix things up here.

Favorites: Pueblo West and Cheyenne Mountain are our choices here as they have been through the tough schedules that will set them up for postseason success.

Watch out for: Javonte Johnson is a player worth checking out and has the potential to carry Cheyenne Mountain to a run with his 23-point, 9-rebound average per game!

Richard Tate Region

(@meadbball/Twitter)

Holy Family’s defense with the football man Kyle Helbig and “Mr. Mid-range” Tanner Baird are 19-4 and the top seed in Tate region. This region is almost too loaded with Mead and Lincoln in as well…

Favorites: The Ball Fever Favorite is not easy in this region but we’re going to go out on a limb and say since Holy Family and Lincoln may be on a collision course, Mead is our surprise favorite to come out on top of this region.

Watch out for: Yes, Mead it is! Four players scoring in double figure scoring and they love to get up and down in a fast pace! Lincoln has some absolute “dawgs” that can play on any 5A or 4A court but do they have the depth to bring the city memories of the Lancers strong past?!!

Hoop fans! It is here: the final week of the regular season. RPI Standings, league titles, and playoff momentum is what our final week is all about.

It’s only midweek but we have a few leagues that have already been decided! Let’s take a look at how it played out:

The Look Back

Monday, Feb. 11

  • Northridge hung in early vs. No. 2 Longmont, but a 24-3 second quarter looked more like what the Trojans have been doing to everyone on this undefeated run. Final score 73-38 with four players in double figure scoring led by Calvin Seamons 16.
  • Smoky Hill came in at No. 6 in this week’s coaches poll and even without their stud Kenny Foster they pulled away from Arapahoe 73-48 with their young sophs leading the way as Jordan Whittaker scored 14, Maurice Walker 13, and junior Quentin Rock 11. Balance was on display for the Buffaloes, who won without their leader!
  • Grandview is getting tuned up for a major showdown at Eaglecrest on Wednesday but they were focused and didn’t look past Creek, with Caleb McGill doing the “stat-stuffin”: 18 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in the 17-point road win!
  • Speaking of stats how about Javonte Johnson performing again for No. 7 Cheyenne Mountain with a 24 point, 10 rebound double-double in the 91-75 race the Indians won over Falcon.
  • Eaglecrest in at No. 10 couldn’t look past ever improving Mullen in their 15-point win on the road where Aaron Bokol and Ty Robinson once again paced the Raptors in double figure scoring.
  • More Centennial action as Overland is now up to No. 3 in our coaches poll and 30 combined points from leaders Hezekiah Swanson and Graham Ike carry the Blazers to a 23 point win over C Trail.
  • Arvada West was tested by Chatfield but keep their Jeffco League hopes alive 54-51.

Tuesday, Feb. 12

  • No. 1 Chaparral got a surprising test from Heritage and good looking soph Terrence Ferguson scored 15 points for the Eagles, but Chap countered with three in double-figure scoring, led by big Bryce Matthews’ 18 point, 11 rebound double-double! Chap wins it by 8.
  • Continued “southern dominance” by No. 1 Lewis-Palmer and 39 combined points from seniors Matt Ragsdale and Joel Scott fueled another league win, over Air Academy this time.
  • Legend was up at halftime over No. 7 ThunderRidge but a dominant second half by the Grizz earned a 13-point home win with Bailey Verk kicking in 17 points!
  • No. 5 Pueblo West won their rivalry game in a BIG way over Pueblo South 75-48…Max Preps recap here.
  • Ben Grusing “turned up” with 22 points for No. 2 Mountain Vista and the Eagles needed all of it in the tight two point win over Rock Canyon!
  • Mead looks awfully ready for their 4A top-5 rematch with Holy Family Thursday as they sprang a 40-point win over Erie to prepare!
  • No. 8 Lincoln has the ability to give any 4A squad trouble as we enter the playoffs and TJ Bamba’s 21 points was a big part of the Lancers pulling away from North.
  • No. 9 Wheat Ridge’s run has been well documented but Evergreen must have been tired of hearing about it as they pulled off a 53-40 late-season upset.
  • Daniel Carr continued his double-double mission for hot Regis with 22 points as the Raiders got a well earned win vs. a game Highlands Ranch squad on the road. Catch this game in full here with Blake Olson on the Game of the Night.
  • Fossil Ridge has steadily improved over the season but as our guy Brad Cochi is all over Fairview left little doubt in their claim on the league title.

Wednesday, Feb. 13

The Fever Crew had some fun at Eaglecrest’s senior night with No. 5 Grandview visiting in a Centennial Top-10 match-up.

The Raptors rode the emotion of the night early but Grandview quickly settled and took control in second quarter along with building on that lead in the third. Once the Wolves get a lead, they have a deep roster that can spread you out and run clock or pound the ball inside and run sets to Caleb McGill and Dayne Prim.

his night was sparked by the sharp perimeter shooting of junior guard Lian Romero, who knocked down every 3-point look behind the arc in the 21-point road win to put Grandview in the Centennial league drivers seat. We were the guest of 9News Game of the Night with Blake Olson and you can catch all the action here.

In other games:

  • Seniors Jackson Hayslip and Spencer Conway score 21 each for Greeley Central, who took unbeaten Longmont to overtime but in their usual closeout manner, the Trojans closed out the OT session 11-2 to win by 9 on the road and complete an unbeaten regular season! Defending champs ready for the brackets!
  • No. 6 Smoky Hill was down double digits to Mullen but made a strong late run only to come up short by 2-points 76-74. Mullen’s improvement will really be put to the test Friday night at Overland! Christian Davis, a real scorer for Mullen, hit the game-winner to seal this big win for the Mustangs.
  • The Creek Bruins’ big 3 of Hammonds, Purchase, and Cole scored in double figures with soph Julian Hammond leading with 18 but “at Overland” is not a thing a team wants to hear this time of year and the Blazers closed this one out by 18.
  • In 5A league title action Columbine was down at the half to Arvada West but used a 11-3 third quarter advantage to turn the tide on a game Arvada West squad to secure the league title!

A few more league titles to be secured and more importantly RPI Standings to be settled in our final three days of the season. Come Sunday? It’s “Bracketology Time” … can’t wait!

The Look Back

Friday, Feb. 8

The Fever Crew made it out to No. 2 Mountain Vista hosting No. 10 Regis who have been on a tear as of late until a stumble vs. Legend.

It was a tale of two halves for the Eagles who were ice cold from the perimeter in the first half against the Regis zone, and only managed 4 points in the second quarter.

Despite the Eagles finding their range in the second half, there was no answer on the inside for Daniel Carr and Matt Wheelock. Carr finished with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double and Wheelock only scored 4 points, but bullied 10 important rebounds and brought energy.

If it wasn’t Carr doing work outside, it was smooth Jamil Safieddiene, who had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals!

Regis is turning into a tough playoff match up and better than last weeks No. 10 ranking showed.

Check out the game in its entirety as we joined the call with Blake Olsen.

In other action:

  • Defending champ Longmont has many players who can get it done on both ends and this night it was Calvin Seamons 23 points and 6 rebounds that earned No. 2’s 21st win of the season, 75-49 over Mountain View.
  • Fairview held the No. 8 spot last week and the Knights were hitting on all cylinders, burying Greeley West by 33 with junior Jalen Page scoring 18.
  • “30-piece” alert! And make that a 38-point, 11-rebound effort for No. 7 Lincoln’s James Felton vs. a game Montbello (FNE) squad in the 80-75 home win in league play. Quite a senior night for Felton!
  • A bit of a shocker and upset here with Air Academy beating 4A No. 7 Cheyenne Mountain by 14! Senior Justin Graham scored 25 in the win and Javonte Johnson 22 in the loss.
  • A couple days after signing his baseball letter of intent for college big Bryce Matthews led No. 1 Chaparral to another league win over No. 4 ThunderRidge and our Ball Fever pal Kevin Keyser has the sweet images of the 11-point win
  • Our guy Dennis Pleuss covering the historic season for Wheat Ridge hoops as they roll again over D’Evelyn

Saturday, Feb. 9

We were surprised Overland didn’t rise higher than 7 in last week’s poll but it will happen after another strong week for Coach Fisher’s group, who took down No. 3 Smoky Hill at home Saturday.

The Fever Crew was in the house and thoroughly impressed with the improvement and footwork of big Graham Ike, who scored 18 and pulled down 11 boards for another double-double. As if Graham wasn’t enough on the inside, Alexander Pena-Avila added 17 points hitting from the perimeter and inside.

Very impressed with the Blazers supporting cast! We know the names of Hezekiah Swanson and Ike but believe us when we say Overland has A LOT more!

We were blessed to be on the call with Blake Olson 9News game of the night…catch the action here.

In other games:

  • Our 4A “sleeper” Mead was running and gunning again with 11 players hitting the scoring column, led by Will Maher’s 17 in the blowout of Roosevelt by 30.
  • 5A No. 9 Eaglecrest took down Arapahoe by 18 in #CentennialTough play and here’s a sweet video recap posted on our partner MaxPrep’s site.
  • The man with the mid-range game, Tanner Baird, was at it again scoring 20 for Holy Family who beat Windsor by 20!
  • Quincy Jewett with another double-double and Christian Speller kicked in 17 points for Rangeview, who again won by 30-plus at Vista Peak!
  • Grandview, last week’s 5A No. 5, used a second half surge to hold off improving Mullen and keep itself in the drivers seat at 9-2 in league play

Ball Fever: Recapping boys basketball action in the early part of this week

(Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics)

The weather cancellations and closures slowed our mid-week action but the sun is shining and we are back in action!

We delayed the early report by a day to get a few more games in, and with the down time with had a little fun with our first ever “Power 10” … yeah, we know: “Can’t make everybody happy” when it comes to rankings!

Let’s take a look.

The Look Back

Monday, Feb. 4

  • How about a “30-piece” to start the week?!! Orlando Westbrook-Sanchez III did just that, dropping 33 points for Harrison on 75% shooting as his team took down Widefield 68-60. Another of those “super sophs” Donta Dawson contributing to their squad with 15 points in the win, as well.
  • Another soph, Kendale Johnson, over at GW led the Patriots to a needed win as they cruised past West by 31.
  • Keyshawn Maltbia led three in double figure scoring for Fountain-Fort Carson with 16 points as the Spartans beat Rampart by 13 on the road.
  • Don’t look now but Coach Carey has the East Angels on the verge of another DPL title and they have averaged 93 points in their LAST 3 games, out-pacing Lakewood by 34 points with senior Caulin Swain dropping 22 points.
  • David O’Connell and Kevin Mulligan combine for 26 points, scoring 13 each, in Golden’s 12-point win at Littleton.

Tuesday, Feb. 5

  • First trip to the renovated gym at Centaurus for the Fever Crew as we joined Blake Olson on the 9News “Game of the Night”! Beautiful facility and fun place to watch a game…catch it in its entirety here.
  • Along with the beautiful facility, No. 10 Centaurus also has a great looking junior in Owen Koonce, who had a game high 26 points scoring from all angles. But this game was about undefeated No. 2 Longmont, who had Calvin Seamons and Brady Renck combine for 33 points leading to a 20-0 record and league title!
  • No. 1 Lewis-Palmer got a couple of “20-plus” games in a row from senior Matt Ragsdale last week, and Tuesday night Joel Scott was up to his scoring ways dropping 26 points, 8 rebounds in another lopsided win for LP…this time over Discovery Canyon.
  • Many were hoping a trip to Brighton could provide a test for visiting Rangeview but not the case as Jodaun Dotson showed up big again with 18 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, and 1 steal for the No. 6 Raiders, who are rolling.
  • Fairview is holding steady at the No. 8 spot in 5A and earned a tight two-point win. Senior Joseph Urynowicz leading the way with 20 points for Rocky Mountain but it wasn’t enough to take down the Knights.
  • FIVE Grizzlies in double figure scoring for No. 4 ThunderRidge, headed by senior Austin Holt’s 16, in the 35-point thumping of Heritage in league play.
  • Down by 8 at halftime Regis, now No. 10 in 5A, used a 20-10 third quarter advantage to change the “mo” and lead the Raiders to a 72-70 win at Castle View. It was key in keeping them at one loss in Continental play. It just seems usual now for Daniel Carr’s 22 point, 11 rebound double-double with Jamil Safiedienne’s 16 and big Matt Wheelock’s 14 in the key win.
  • Brett Finnegan scores 11 for Pueblo West in league play for the No. 4 Cyclones, who beat Pueblo Central by 4.
  • Wanted to see a “statement” game from No. 2 Mountain Vista and they delivered in a double digit win over surging Legend with seniors Ben Grusing and Simon May combining for 39 points! That’s the way a No. 2 is supposed to step up…
  • There’s our BallFever 4A “sleeper” keeping the momentum rolling with 44 points from the firm of Maher, Ward, & Ayers in 15-point road win at Frederick for No. 3 Mead!
  • There’s that man! TJ Bamba with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal in 4A No. 7 Lincoln’s 27-point DPL win over Denver South.
  • Javonte Johnson with a “monsta” double-double of 20 points, 15 rebounds for No. 6 Cheyenne Mountain who got the 4-point road win at Sand Creek!

Wednesday, Feb. 6

  • The snow and cancellations hurt our mid-week action but Harrison and The Classical Academy still made it happen! Harrison advanced to 17-4 with tight 57-53 win where the 14-7 second quarter shut down did the trick! Sophomore Donta Dawson leading Harrison at 17.1 points per game.
  • Senior E. Whitmore scored 19 for for Sierra who are down this year and his 19 was matched by the home team Widefield’s Randall Days who spurred the 10-point win.
  • Steamboat Springs, 4A No. 8, found itself down 13-8 at the end of first quarter but got defensive in the fourth only allowing Battle Mountain three points in the final stage! Mac Riniker “stat-stuffin” 20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.

Thursday, Feb. 7

  • There’s that squad again! We like the make up and attack of this No. 4 Mead crew and they were out on the wing again, 69-32 over Fort Morgan, and held the Mustangs to 8 first half points. If the Mavericks add this type of “D” to their up tempo style we see more success on the way.
  • Pueblo County lost a home league game to No. 4 Pueblo West, who is now 17-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in league play!
  • Can’t wait to get a late season game on the new black court at Aurora Central but tonight they took care of their road business beating Thornton by 14 to advance to 14-7 overall.

Mid-Week Thoughts

Hey, let’s have a little fun. Snow day thoughts with our guy Blake Olson and we went out on a limb with each of our “Power 10”! Power 10? Who are your top 10 regardless of 4A and 5A? Here’s Ball Fever’s take (these are Ball Fever solely — not Blake’s):

  1. Chap (Kobe’s left hand with a crew that can get it done)
  2. Grandview (Prim & McGill inside along with consistent guard play)
  3. Overland (Graham Ike – DOMINANT!)
  4. Smoky Hill (#kennythingspossible)
  5. Lewis-Palmer (Joel and Matt Ragsdale won’t be happy with us about this 5 spot — can’t blame em!)
  6. Rangeview (will the league play hurt post season success? We don’t think so!)
  7. Mountain Vista (Bad night on the big stage at Chap but that could mean nothing)
  8. Eaglecrest (Bokol…Robinson: THAT IS ALL!)
  9. T-Ridge (Length, coaching, under the radar!)
  10. Longmont (Can you be 20-0 with a chip on the shoulder as a defending champ? Admit they could be higher here…)

Wish we could see Longmont and Lewis-Palmer vs. more 5A top squads but they have taken care of everyone in their path! Our 4A sleeper, Mead, could play with a few of our favorite 5A’s too…

Yes, yes…our Lewis-Palmer faithful will be extremely upset with the Fever Crew for this after knocking off Chaparral after winter break but we’re trying to pretend if each of these teams had to play each other on a neutral court (something like the Denver Coliseum)!

It’s all in good fun…and we switched teams around like 2,037 times! The good part is many of these teams will be playing it out on the court soon, but it was fun to PRETEND!

Get out and see all these teams in person, folks!

Ball Fever: Wrapping up last week’s boys basketball games

Grandview Smoky Hill boys basketball

(Marcus Gipson/Jmariahimages.com)

Welcome back, folks!

Hard to believe we are now entering our last two weeks of regular season play and the final matches will be meaningful and give these awesome athletes memories for years to come!

But before we get into all the nostalgia let’s enjoy the moment of 5A ABSOLUTELY beating each other up and simply relish the run 4A Lewis-Palmer and Longmont are on as the clear top “dawgs” so far!

The Look Back

Thursday, Jan. 31

  • No. 7 Lincoln got a scare from up and coming Northfield and the Lancers had three score in double figures led by James Felton’s 19 point, 6 rebound effort.
  • Last week’s No. 6 5A squad ThunderRidge won the neighborhood brawl with Highlands Ranch 47-38. Austin Holt and Kevin Sax both got above the rim, and Holt led the scoring with 14.
  • 5A top-10 in No. 3 Mountain Vista vs. No. 10 Columbine. This may be considered the Eagles’ toughest test since losing their sole game to Chap and they handled this test well winning by 13, closing the game on a 20-11 run. A different senior, Corban Gamble, led the scoring this time with 16 and stud Luke O’Brien led all scorers with 21 in the loss.
  • Mead, up to No. 4 last week, got 25 points, 4 assists from Will Maher on the way to 18-point home win over Skyline.
  • Daniel Carr delivered another double-double performance of 20 and 11 along with Jamil Safieddiene adding 16 points coming off Regis’ big upset of Chaparral, but Legend ruined their eight-game win streak, 68-65 final for the Titans!
  • Speaking of last week’s No. 1 Chaparral, they were hungry to avenge the last second loss to Regis and were trying to do that in one of the toughest venues we have at Rock Canyon. Big Bryce Matthews scored 16 and Kobe Sanders 10 while the Chap defense held the Jags to single digits in two quarters leading to the nice double digit road win.

Friday, Feb. 1

Jalen Weaver was getting it done inside and out all night for Smoky Hill and the “super soph” also came away with the game winning lay up!

Catch the entire exciting second half here of No. 5 upsetting No. 2 with the 9News Game of the Night here with Blake Olson and myself.

In the pre-game interview Coach Hardin stated the young sophomores needed to step up but even he may not have expected the night Weaver had. Here’s the exciting finish that pulled Smoky and Grandview to a Centennial tie at 8-2 in league and gave Jalen Weaver a season high of 19 points.

On to the other Friday action:

  • Throw the records out the window when Pueblo West & East rekindle! West coming in ranked No. 3 in 4A was a favorite but East put up a great fight losing by 5 and a big reason why was Logan Garcia’s “stat-stuffin” 30 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal for the Cyclones!
  • Many wanted to see if Aurora Central could provide at least a little league challenge to No. 4 Rangeview and the Raiders clearly answered that with an “ummmmm, no!” The Raiders had 11 players score in double figures en route to a 40-point win of their Aurora foe led by Jodaun Dotson’s 19!
  • No chance for Niwot to even stay close to one of our state’s hottest teams, Longmont who is now 19-0 after the 54-point win on this night. Longmont is looking destined to at least return to the title game as defending 4A champ.
  • Speaking of hottest teams in the state, No. 1 Lewis-Palmer would like nothing more than a return visit to the Coliseum to see a rematch with Longmont, but we are a ways away from that talk! The Rangers rode the hot hand of Matt Ragsdale who scored 27 points, including four three pointers along the way to an 81-48 thumping of Sand Creek.
  • In the rough and tumble Centennial League Eaglecrest moved to 7-3 in league with a crucial 63-56 win over Cherry Creek. The lead “dawgs” Aaron Bokol and “super soph” Ty Robinson combine for 31 points in the win.
  • Javonte Johnson continues his “stat-stuffin” ways with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists paving the way for the 6-point road win over Palmer Ridge.
  • After this week’s upsets No. 7 Overland will be looking to rise in the rankings and they got their own scare from Arapahoe, but still got the tough 55-50 win on the road.

Saturday, Feb. 2

  • “30-piece!” Columbine needed a bounce back win to end the week and Luke O’Brien’s 31 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals straight “stat-stuffin” was a HUGE part of the 12-point win at Lakewood.
  • 21 points from Mack Riniker helped 4A No. 7 Steamboat Springs to a 50-28 home win over Palisade.
  • Saturday afternoon at the ThunderDome in the city is always fun and the Denver East vs. Montbello (FNE) kept the scorers table busy as they raced to a 97-84 fun pace won by the Angels. Kwane Marble led four Angels in double figure scoring with 29 and the Warriors Myron Hamilton led all with 29 in the loss. Denver East looking to reclaim the DPL title!
  • Matt Ragsdale is on fire and again led Lewis-Palmer in double figure scoring this time with 22 as the Rangers continued their dominance down south as all eleven players got on the stat sheet in the 30-point thumping of 5A Doherty.
  • The man with the “mid-range” game, Tanner Baird, scored another 20 for Holy Family, who beat Erie by 12 on the road. Football stud Kyle Helbig added 16 points in the win.
  • Wheat Ridge wins big over Littleton on Saturday and the “Farmers Fab Five” are ready to attempt history for their school and our Dennis Pleuss brings you their historic run.
