There are a few top-10 matchups right away, including No. 1 Regis Jesuit at No. 4 Kent Denver in field hockey on Thursday, and No. 1 Chaparral at No. 2 Cherokee Trail in 5A volleyball on Friday.

Thursday also brings two cross country events, one in Aurora and another Johnstown.

The Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, held at Norris-Penrose Event Center, the same venue as the state championships, is Friday. The Vista Nation XC 2-Mile is also Friday, and that is drawing a number of the top programs from the metro area — including four defending state championship teams.

Additionally, RPI standings are now live:

Furthermore, volleyball and boys soccer have new pages for individual stats leaders:

Spirit will add a new game day cheer division

2018 state spirit finals

(Marlee Smith/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — A new division is coming to spirit — and it will be included during this fall’s state championships.

When CHSAA’s Legislative Council voted to approve the spirit report on Wednesday, that included the addition of a game day division at the state event.

Game day more accessible to a wide range of schools, as it is a competition surrounding a spirit program’s primary role, which is to support their school’s athletic teams. Teams are judged based upon their ability to lead cheers, use skills to rally a crowd, communicate to fans, and support the athletes on the fields.

“This will be very exciting for other spirit programs to have the opportunity to participate utilizing their everyday game day skills,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig, who oversees spirit. “It is more accessible to a wide range of schools, as it is a non-tumbling division.

“We’re hoping to pull in some schools who may not access to gyms, tumbling or choreography,” she added. “This will bring another fun experience to our championships.”

This discipline joins cheer, co-ed cheer, pom pon, Jazz and hip-hop as divisions at the state championships.

Spirit programs will only be allowed to participate in either game day or co-ed/cheer at the state championships.

Rules changes approved in spirit

INDIANAPOLIS — Rules related to minimizing risk of injury to dance and cheer team members are among 29 rules revisions for the 2019-20 high school spirit season.

The rules changes were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Spirit Rules Committee at its March 2-4 meeting and subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

“We’re trying to create a safer environment for activities to occur in cheer and dance and make the rules book as clear as possible,” said James Weaver, director of performing arts and liaison to the NFHS Spirit Rules Committee.

Rule 3-3-3 was changed to make it consistent with other braced inversion rules. It now allows for the inverted person to be caught by new catchers as long as the new catchers remain close to the original bases, are in place before initiation of the inversion, and do not pose increased safety risk to the top person.

Rule 3-3-5 was changed to allow a braced front flip to be performed just as it is on the ground while using one bracer behind the top person holding both hands. Both of the top person’s hands/arms must be in continuous contact with a bracer and the bracer must be in a multi-base prep with a spotter. The top person must be to the side or in front of the bracer, and only one bracer is necessary. This allows similar visuals for smaller teams and removes the need for an additional bracer to hold the wrist of the top person.

Another change related to inversions was made to Rule 3-3-6, which now restricts releasing from an inversion with a stunt that has twists at any level, even in the presence of a spotter. Previously, inversions could release with a stunt at prep level or below.

“This change affects how someone moves from upside down. This change is significant because of risks [associated with twists],” Weaver said.

Rule 2-1-5 now states that props made of hard material or sharp edges cannot be released by a top person and must be placed by someone on the ground. This reduces risk of injury from falling props.

In other changes, Rule 3-5-5 was revised to clarify the intent of the rule and better describe the connection between the bracer and the top person. Rule 4-3-3 was also changed to clarify that as long as someone is gripping, it is not important whether it is the top person or the bracer.

A complete list of spirit rules changes is located on the spirit page of the NFHS website, www.nfhs.org, under “Activities and Sports.”

According to the 2017-18 NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, competitive spirit is the ninth-most popular sport for girls with 162,669 participants in 6,877 schools around the country.

Riverdale Ridge makes its debut at the 2018 state spirit compeition

Riverdale Ridge spirit

(Dan Mohrmann/CHSAANow.com)

DENVER — The first time often doesn’t go as planned, but that didn’t bother the Riverdale Ridge High School cheer team.

The Ravens did it. They got onto the floor of the Denver Coliseum and they competed in front of a big audience and showed that they will be a part of the state spirit competition for a long time. It didn’t matter if they stumbled, it didn’t matter if they fell.

By the end of the competition, the girls got up and finished their routine with pride.

“We had fun and that’s the most important thing right now,” Jordan Trjuillo said. “We showed who Riverdale was. Even though we fell a couple of times I felt we did pretty good as freshmen and sophomores competing as a varsity team.”

The school opened its doors for the 2018-19 school year meaning that every athletic team is new to its respective field of play. The cheer team is no different, but they craved the opportunity to compete at state, even if it was one of the more nerve-racking things they have done all year.

“It really was,” Trinity Vanderbeek said. “We practiced a lot, but this was our first big competition.”

Of the four teams that advanced to finals, the Ravens were not included. There will be time for that for future teams. Coach Brian Franca knows that every strong program has to start somewhere.

When he speaks to future teams about competing at state and what the goals are for each girl, he will always mention the team that competed on Friday and how they were the girls that started everything for the cheer program.

“This is the group that set the stage,” he said. “They built the traditions, they built the program and they established who we want to be. And we’re going to build on that the next year and the year after.”

Even when talking about the future, he couldn’t contain his pride for the present. Seeing his team hit the floor and go through their routine is an experience he’ll never forget.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “They’re young, just freshmen and sophomores, and this was their first time competing. They didn’t do any other competition besides this so just them representing Riverdale Ridge and being out there was awesome.”

And once they got out and there and got into their routine, that helped calm the nerves. They felt more at home and more in the moment as they started performing.

“I felt more calm and collected, because we’ve practiced so much that I can just flow through and be able to do it,” Vanderbeek said.

Looking ahead, they’ll be back next year. The team will be more experienced and ready to take on the atmosphere that comes with competing at the Coliseum.

And if nothing else, they understand that they’ve done something for their school that no one else gets to do. They got to be the first Ravens to compete on the biggest stage of the year. That’s an experience that no one can take away from them and it’s something that future teams will talk about down the road.

“It’s been crazy because it’s our first cheer team and everyone’s hoping we do well,” Trujillo said. “They just wanted us to show who Riverdale was. They didn’t care if we hit or won, just represent the school.”

Riverdale Ridge wasn’t the only new team competing at the event. DSST: Byers also stepped on the floor for the first and also figures to be a regular for future competitions.
