Lakewood hopes lip dub of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ leads to flood benefit

Lakewood’s one-take lip dub of Katy Perry’s new single, “Roar,” is inching closer to 500,000 views as of Friday morning. The Tigers are hoping all the attention can help the school win a contest and bring Perry to Colorado for a concert benefiting victims of this month’s widespread flooding.

Lakewood High School’s video, which involved more than 2,000 students and spotlights the Tigers’ activities, athletic teams and clubs, was produced by students and teachers — including student body president Courtney Coddington, who directed it.

“We practiced for maybe 90 minutes,” athletic director Tim Walker said on Friday. “We did it during homeroom so it didn’t really impact education at all. … All of the clubs and groups were involved.

“We went through a couple of practices on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Friday, everyone lined up, and we said we were doing it — and, bam. It was on our homecoming assembly day, so we went to the assembly and then everyone went to their spot and we did the take.”

Take a look:

A one-take lip dub involving the whole school is nothing new to Lakewood. The school lip dubbed Perry’s song “Firework” in 2011.

“We wanted to do another one, and this song came out, ‘Roar,’ ” Walker said. “It fits us perfectly, because we’re the Tigers.”

Earlier this month, ABC’s Good Morning America announced a contest for schools to perform “your own rendition of ‘Roar’ for a chance to win … a live concert” by Katy Perry. Lakewood started plans for the new video.

“Then, the flood happened,” Walker said. “We were very well aware of that because Fairview was our homecoming football game, and we changed our game to Saturday afternoon instead of Friday afternoon because Fairview couldn’t practice and they wanted to change the game, and that was the least we could do for them.

“So, it turned into, ‘OK, we’re going to do this lip dub, and if we win, we’ll do a huge concert at Coors Field or something, and all the proceeds will go to the flood victims.’

“We’re hoping that we can win the contest and do something more than just a lip dub, but something for people in Boulder and other kids that have been displaced and suffering.”

The school collected $1,500 to benefit flood victims during that homecoming game against Fairview.

“It’s just one of those things where we’re trying to do the right thing,” Walker said. “It’s really neat to see the kids really care about other people and other kids and being part of the human race and not just thinking about themselves and their school. And that if we’re in a position where we can do things for other people and other schools, we’d sure like to.”

Friday morning alone, the video was shown on Good Morning America and Lakewood representatives appeared on Alice 105.9 and Fox 31. It’s been picked up by seemingly every media outlet locally, as well as national outlets like the Huffington Post, and spread through social media on Facebook, Twitter and reddit.

Perry herself Tweeted the video out and also posted it to her Facebook page.

Good Morning American will announce the winner on Oct. 10, Walker said. The concert would be Oct. 25.

Basketball rules changes address allowance of head coaches on court

Even the fall season is just reaching its midpoint, many people are turning their attention to getting ready for basketball. Coaches and administrators are beginning to ask questions related to rules changes that may impact how they approach the season. There are several rule changes that will impact the administrative side of the contest, while one will have an impact on the court.

The latter will allow head coaches in high school basketball to come onto the court in an effort to break up a fight or keep a situation from escalating. Previously, the head coach could only enter the court if beckoned by an official. This revision to Rule 10-4-5 was one of five rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its April 15-17 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

While the head coach and his/her assistants must continue to ensure that players remain on the bench during a fight, the committee agreed that the presence of the head coach on the court could be instrumental in preventing the situation from escalating, and the coach also could assist game officials in controlling the situation.

“By removing the requirement of the head coach being beckoned onto the floor by the officials, it should result in a more expedient resolution of the situation and restoration of order,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials education. “The change also will allow the officials a greater opportunity to assess appropriate penalties by being able to observe the situation because of the increased assistance the head coach(es) will provide by their presence.”

In other changes, the rules committee approved the use of electronic devices during the game in certain instances. Rule 1-19 now will allow a coach to take advantage of electronic devices for use in coaching and gathering statistics. Teams, however, cannot use electronic equipment for voice communication with players on the court, and the use of electronic audio and/or video devices are not allowed to review a decision of the contest officials.

In an effort to thwart the use of leg-compression sleeves for non-medical reasons, the committee added leg-compression sleeves to the requirements of arm-compression sleeves in Rule 3-5-3. Leg-compression sleeves shall be white, black, beige or a single solid school color; shall be the same color for each team member; must meet the logo requirements in Rule 3-6; and must only be worn for medical reasons.

The final rules change approved by the committee for the 2013-14 season will permit a single, visible manufacturer’s logo/trademark/reference on the team jersey, not to exceed 2¼ square inches with no dimension more than 2¼ inches. The manufacturer’s logo may be located no more than 5 inches below the shoulder seam on the front of the jersey, or 2 inches from the neckline on the back of the jersey, or in either side insert. Wynns said this change will bring basketball in agreement with other NFHS sports rules and allow the use of a single manufacturer’s logo on the jersey of the playing uniform.

In addition to these rules changes, the committee approved a new defensive tip signal that will be added to the Basketball Officials Manual. This signal will be given by the official when the ball enters the backcourt as a result of contact with the defensive player.

Basketball is the second-most popular sport for girls and third-most popular for boys at the high school level, according to the 2011-12 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS, with 435,885 girls and 535,289 boys participating nationwide. The sport ranks first in school sponsorship of girls and boys teams with 17,768 schools sponsoring the sport for girls and 18,099 sponsoring the sport for boys.

Pomona upsets Standley Lake boys soccer in double overtime

If Monday at the North Area Athletic Complex is any indication, the Class 5A Jeffco League boys’ soccer conference title race will be quite a ride.

The Standley Lake Gators entered its league game against rival Pomona with an impressive 7-0-0 mark and No. 6 ranking in this week’s CHSAANow.com 5A soccer poll. While on paper it looked like a mismatch, the Panthers pulled out a 2-1 double-overtime victory to improve to 2-4-0, 1-1-0 in league.

“Anything can happen in Jeffco 5A,” Pomona coach Mike Askin said after the dramatic win. “We needed this to get back in the running.”

The game-winning goal was scored in the 94th minute off the foot of Pomona junior Marcello Laguera. Aided by a strong north wind at his back, Laguera’s shot from well outside the goal box sailed over the head of a leaping Standley Lake goalie Ryan Fernandez and into the back of the net.

“I saw that wind and the ball just took a skip,” Askin said of Laguera’s goal. “Elements are part of the game.”

It was the first goal since Pomona junior Jake Semple tied the game at 1 in the 27th minute of the first half.

The Panthers had a couple of chances for the go-ahead goal in the second half. The best scoring opportunity came in the 64th minute when senior Dillon Fee ripped a shot off the far post.

“I thought everyone put in an extra effort to win today,” Fee said. “There are a lot of good teams (in 5A Jeffco). They are young and fresh like us. We can move the ball around and showed we can play in this league too.”

Standley Lake (7-1-0, 1-1-0) now must rebound from its first setback of the season. The Gators haven’t won a boys’ soccer league title since 1990.

Sophomore Kyler Fowkes scored his eighth goal of the season for the Gators in the 11th minute, but Pomona adjusted to a four-back system to bottle up Standley Lake’s leading scorer for the majority of the game.

“I think it will humble us a little bit,” Fowkes said of the loss.

Standley Lake coach Jeff Vigil expected his team to have a target on its back entering league play after the hot start. He also believes his squad will respond positively after the setback.

“This program the last four years has been build on hard work, teamwork, being a family and being dedicated to each other,” Vigil said. “I think until you face adversity you truly don’t know if you are going to succeed in the big picture.”

The next league test for Standley Lake will be an important one against Chatfield (6-2, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Lakewood Memorial Field. Pomona’s next conference tilt is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at NAAC against Bear Creek.

“This league is just crazy,” Vigil said. “Nobody is going to go undefeated in league.”
