AURORA — The No. 4-ranked Regis Jesuit baseball team expected nothing less from No. 6 ThunderRidge in Friday’s Continental League showdown.

The Raiders (14-3, 9-0) got all they could handle and then some but managed to keep their league mark unblemished as they took a 7-5 victory.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” Regis left fielder Quin Cotton said, despite ThunderRidge entering the game at 10-5, 5-3 in league.

The Raiders broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Zach Woodruff’s two-run triple.

But the Grizzlies (10-6, 5-4) weren’t about to give in. After scattering four hits through the first five innings, they finally got to Regis starting pitcher Brent Schwarz in the sixth.

Schwarz gave way to reliever David Peterson, who promptly gave up a pair of run-scoring doubles as ThunderRidge tied the game.

At that point, the Grizzlies had the momentum. They kept it going by getting two quick outs on Regis in the bottom of the sixth.

That’s when Woodruff, the No. 9 batter in the Raiders’ lineup, came up. He lined a triple to center field.

“I’m just thinking, there’s no way we’re going 1-2-3,” he said of his mindset as he stepped to the plate.

That set the table for Cotton, who drilled a fastball over the leftfield fence to help the Raiders regain the lead.

“I was just trying to do my job,” Cotton said.

But the Grizzlies refused to go quietly. They loaded the bases with two outs before Peterson induced a ground-out to end the game.

The see-saw battle turned out to be every bit as exciting as a 5A top 10 match-up can be. While it wasn’t a blowout win, it was still the kind of win that any coach would take over a league rival.

“That’s all right,” said Regis coach Matt Darr. “Those are character wins.”

Both teams are back in action Monday as Regis travels south to take on Castle View while the Grizzlies travel to Legend.

ARVADA — Every goal has been a treasured commodity during the race for the Class 5A Jeffco girls’ soccer league championship this spring.

That was definitely the case Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex. A goal by Ralston Valley sophomore Emma Musson in the 65th minute gave the Mustangs, No. 10 in the latest CHSAANow.com 5A girls’ soccer rankings, a 3-1 lead. Ralston Valley hung on for a 3-2 victory against Standley Lake.

“I thought we would score more, but Standley Lake came back harder,” Musson said of what turned out to be the game-winning goal. “It was rough.”

Standley Lake senior Sammie Brown scored in the 72nd minute to close the Gators to within one goal, but Standley Lake wasn’t able to get the equalizer in the final minutes to force overtime.

“It opened up in the second half,” Standley Lake coach Jeff Vigil said. “Both teams just gave it everything they had. It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we are on the wrong end of it but our season isn’t over.”

Ralston Valley (11-2), Standley Lake (10-3) and Columbine (10-3) entered the day with identical 5-1 league records. The victory vaulted the Mustangs atop the conference standings alone. Chatfield upset Columbine 2-1 on Friday to drop the Rebels one game behind the Mustangs with one league game remaining.

Columbine will actually face Ralston Valley in both teams’ league finale at 4 p.m. April 29, at NAAC. A victory or tie Tuesday would win the league title for the Mustangs. A Rebels win could force a three-way tie where Columbine would likely take the crown with least goals allowed in league play.

The conference game was originally scheduled for April 3, but snow postponed the game to the end of the league docket.

“No matter what we have to win.” Ralston Valley coach Kamee Morwood said. “I knew when our game against Columbine got cancelled it would come down to the league championship. It’s huge because they will be a good view of what we’ll get in the playoffs.”

Ralston Valley freshman Lindsay Guerrero opened up the scoring Friday with a goal in the 35th minute off an assist from Musson.

“I just crossed it in and hoped someone would be there to finish it,” Musson said.

Standley Lake answered early in the second half when junior Taylor McRae headed in a free kick taken by sophomore Kat Lopez to tie the game at 1-1.

Ralston Valley regained the lead in the 63rd minute with Kasee Horton deflecting in a corner kick by sophomore Alyssa Kaiser. Musson’s goal came less than a two minutes later for a 3-1 Ralston Valley lead.

It was the fourth league game Ralston Valley has been involved in that was decided by one goal.

“To go into this week of the season there are three teams tied for first and three other teams fighting to get in,” Morwood said. “It speaks for the talent in Jeffco and the coaches who really care about there kids and really want their kids in (the playoffs). It’s been awesome.”

The first round of the 5A state playoffs begin May 6.

Jeffco receives three automatic bids to the 32-team tournament. It’s almost a lock Ralston Valley, Columbine and Standley Lake will finish in the top three to gain berths to state. Dakota Ridge and Arvada West could fight their way into an automatic bid, but more likely will have to earn one of the 11 at-large bids.

Standley Lake concludes its regular season with a non-league game against Niwot on Monday, April 28, at NAAC. The Gators last league contest is 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, against Bear Creek at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“I think we have a playoff run in us,” Vigil said. “I’m excited about it.”

ARVADA — Arvada West baseball might have just completed its most remarkable three-game stretch in the program’s rich history.

A grand slam by A-West senior Joe Rosenstein in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday lifted the unranked Wildcats to a 6-4 victory over the top-ranked team, Chatfield, in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A baseball poll.

The Wildcats (12-5, 6-0) not only are atop the 5A Jeffco League standings with two conference games remaining, but also scored three straight late-inning, come-from-behind victories against No. 3 Columbine (Monday), No. 8 Ralston Valley (Wednesday) and No. 1 Chatfield (Saturday) over the last six days.

“I didn’t know if we would go 3-0 this week, but after that first win Monday we were playing with momentum,” A-West coach Matt McDougal said after the Wildcats’ sixth straight victory.

It was Rosenstein’s time deliver the big hit for the Wildcats. Senior Nick Priola blasted a walk-off grand slam Wednesday against rival Ralston Valley in an 11-8 victory.

Chatfield senior pitcher Travis Schnoor was cruising for the most part Saturday. He had only given up two runs on four hits before Rosenstein’s line drive over the left field fence.

“He (Schmoor) was pitching me inside all day. I figured he was going to do it again,” Rosenstein said. “Sure enough, I just turned on it.”

A-West senior Justin Mulvaney was standing on third base when Rosenstein ripped the home run.

“I put my hands up. I knew it was gone,” Mulvaney said. “I was so excited. I knew right when he (Rosenstein) hit it I would be going in to pitch to close it.”

Mulvaney pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning, striking out the final two Chatfield batters to pick up the save. Senior John Badgett got the win on the mound for the Wildcats. He pitched the sixth inning after starter Brody Hagel-Pitt went five innings.

“We have a lot of confidence in our bullpen and turning it over to them,” McDougal said. “Justin’s goal was to lead the state in saves. I don’t know where he is at, but he is doing a great job.”

A-West’s only two other runs came in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Ethan Fleming had a two-run single to cut Chatfield’s lead to 3-2.

The Chargers’ big inning was the second. Back-to-back singles by junior Kyle Winkler and senior Jacob Falbo set the table. Chatfield (14-2, 3-2) took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to plate a trio of runs.

“(A-West) is a good club,” Chatfield coach Brandon Stone said. “This is what Jefferson County baseball is. Top to bottom it’s a tough conference. You have to bring it every time you come out.”

A-West didn’t have the lead until Rosenstein’s grand slam.

“It would be nice to start off ahead and kind of keep a lead, but this is a little more exciting,” Mulvaney said with a smile. “I like those exciting games.”

Chatfield’s other run came in the top of the sixth when senior Matthew Jarecki scored on an A-West fielding error, giving the Chargers a 4-2 lead.

“We haven’t played great, but I think our kids believe they can win no matter what the score is,” McDougal said. “They are just sticking to it.”

A-West wraps up its regular season with a pair of road games next week. The Wildcats face rival Pomona on Monday before closing out their conference schedule at Lakewood on Wednesday. Both are scheduled for 4 p.m. starts.

“I knew we had it in us,” Rosenstein said of defeating Columbine, Ralston Valley and Chatfield. “We knew it was a tough week. We all came out and played as hard as we could.”

Chatfield has a trio of league games left, including a pair at All Star Park in Lakewood on Monday and Wednesday. The Chargers start the week against Standley Lake and return to All Star Park to face Ralston Valley on Wednesday. Both games are 3:30 p.m. starts.

“There is a lot to play for,” Stone said after the Chargers’ second straight loss following a 14-0 start to the season. “We are a resilient club. These guys fight and scrap. We’ll be back at it Monday.”

Chatfield ends its regular season at home against Bear Creek at 11 a.m. May 3.

Douglas County led 3-1 heading into the seventh, before Mountain Vista scored three times in the top half to gain the lead. The Huskies then won on Minnick’s double in the bottom half.

Minnick also homered, and finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Tyler Quintana finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Broomfield girls soccer continues to control Northern Conference

NIWOT — Broomfield girls soccer had claimed five Northern Conference crowns in a row entering Thursday’s road game.

In a battle of undefeated league teams, Niwot made the Eagles work for title No. 6, but Broomfield ultimately kept its stranglehold on the Northern with a 3-1 victory.

The win gave the Eagles a 6-0 conference record with a game against Longmont remaining. They hold the tiebreaker over Niwot (6-1), which completed its league campaign.

No. 8 Niwot pounced on No. 2 Broomfield with a Caroline Miller goal off a deflected shot by Maria Fayeulle. The goal came less than a minute into the Class 4A game.

“It definitely woke me up a little bit,” said Broomfield senior forward Brittney Stark, a University of Colorado recruit, about the deficit. “It’s always scary to go down a goal any time in the game, but especially that early in the game, in a game that we were hoping to come out strong for.

“I think we ended up on our heels a little more than we were expecting, so it was a good wakeup call and I’m proud of my team for pulling through it, because it’s a hard thing to do.”

Broomfield controlled possession for the most part after the early goal as Stark, Katie Forsee and the Eagles’ other experienced midfielders and forwards applied pressure on Niwot’s defense with their speed and ball skills.

Broomfield earned an equalizer with 11 minutes left in the first half as Stark found Forsee on a cross, who put it in the back of the net.

“To find ourselves down, with our experience, I never felt panicked, the girls never felt panicked,” Broomfield coach Jim Davidson said. “We had already created a couple of opportunities. Ultimately, we played ourselves back in, but I was glad, obviously, we equalized before halftime. It might have been a little bit harder in the second half trying to chase the game a bit.”

The physicality of the match picked up in the second half as both teams eyed the conference crown. Broomfield took advantage of a Cougar foul in the box that set up a Kerri Marquardt penalty kick attempt. She converted to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 29 minutes remaining.

Kristin Snyder all but sealed the victory with a ridiculous angle shot on the far right side. The goal gave Broomfield a 3-1 lead with 13:20 on the clock. The Eagles could taste another conference championship.

Davidson was pleased with the victory over a tough squad that entered the match 11-1.

“Niwot is a much improved team from last year, so I think that they deserve a lot of credit,” Davidson said. “It’s always fun to come here and these games are always a grind. I think our girls handled themselves well ultimately. It wasn’t real pretty. It wasn’t the kind of soccer that we really wanted to play today, but it was effective.”

Stark, a varsity player all four years at Broomfield, hopes the team builds off the win on their way to the playoffs in two weeks.

“I think it was a good team win,” Stark said. “As a team, I think we played really well and we played together well. That’s what’s important nearing the postseason, is being able to connect on the team, and not on an individual level, but on a team level.”

“We need to become a little more consistent near the goal and connecting with our midfielders and our forwards,” Stark added. “When we connect midfielders and forwards together, we’re unstoppable, and I think we have a lot of potential going forward if we do that. It’s starting to fall into place. As long as we keep that going, we’re going to be fine.”

The Eagles, who returned nine starters off last year’s state runner-up team, had a wealth of experience headed into the season in the frontline and with Paige Lindbloom, a returning starter at goalie, but were youthful defensively.

Stark said it’s been a process incorporating new talent into the defense.

“It definitely took a couple of games,” Stark said. “Our first couple of games were a little rougher, but we got blessed with a very, very, very good and experienced freshman class. Everybody that is coming in is definitely making a difference on the team, which is impressive as freshman, because that’s hard to do on a team that’s as experienced and old as us with eight or nine seniors in our class.”

Zoe Zinis, a sophomore transfer from Mullen, sat out half the season due to CHSAA rules. The talented defensive newcomer displayed her skills on Thursday.

Niwot’s Maria Fayeulle, a Northwestern recruit and the leading scorer in the Northern Conference with 45 points, including a league-leading 17 goals, gave Broomfield trouble right away.

“We struggled a little bit early,” Davidson said of defending Fayeulle. “I thought they found her in good space and she did a good job going deep for the ball, but then we brought Zoe Zinis on and we tried to match speed for speed and that worked out really well for us.”

Broomfield’s combination of talent, leadership, and experience earned them a checkmark next to one of their goals, a conference championship. This season, they have had their sights set on a bigger prize, though, after losing 2-0 to Cheyenne Mountain in last year’s 4A State Championship match.

“Its last year’s state championship game that’s haunting us,” Stark said. “Obviously, that is my biggest goal this year. I want nothing more than a state championship, especially my senior year. I look forward to that and every game I think about that game, but we also are trying to remind ourselves to keep it in perspective. It’s a long road to get there. We still have a long road to go.”

No. 2 Chatfield remains undefeated in girls lacrosse

LAKEWOOD — Chatfield senior Rachael Walker is making every offensive possession she is able to play with her “best friend” count.

Walker assisted on four of junior Kendra Lanuza’s eight first-half goals Thursday night at Trailblazer Stadium as the Chargers took a 19-2 victory over Dakota Ridge in Jeffco League girls lacrosse action. Walker knows her prep career is coming to an end, along with her time playing with Lanuza, who leads Chatfield with staggering 77 goals on the season.

“Kendra and I are a duo,” said Walker, who finished with four goals and five assists against Dakota Ridge. “I don’t know what I’ll do without her. It’s going to be hard. I’ll miss her.”

For the third time this season, Lanuza finished with nine goals in a game. She also tacked on three assists for No. 2-ranked Chatfield (13-0, 6-0 in league), which clinched the conference title Thursday with the victory.

“I haven’t had a first half like that in awhile,” Lanuza said. “I had some great assisters. Shelby (Piper) and Rachael (Walker) are always looking for me.”

The younger Lanuza sister, Jen, added a trio of goals for the Chargers. Senior Shelby Piper had a pair of goals and assists. Sophomore Ellie Cassel added a goal in Chatfield’s dominating performance. Senior Emily McMinimee picked up the win in goal for the Chargers.

Dakota Ridge sophomore Lauren Evancich and senior Jessica Tobey picked up the goals for the Eagles. Dakota Ridge (7-6, 4-2) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

“We have a lot of chemistry right now. It is a pretty efficient offense. We get a lot of shots,” Chatfield coach Adam Everett said. “That’s just sharing the ball and a lot of smart play on the attack side.”

The win pushed Chatfield’s winning streak in conference play to 14 games dating back to the program’s 2012 campaign. The lone undefeated girls’ lacrosse squad in the state swept through Jeffco last season in winning their first league title.

Chatfield is one win away from running the table in Jeffco for the second straight season. The Chargers wrap up their conference schedule against rival Columbine at 7 p.m. April 29 at Trailblazer Stadium.

“It’s really important,” Everett said of going undefeated through conference play. “We still have Columbine to go and we never discount any opponent.”

Before Chatfield goes for the league sweep, it will have a good non-league test against No. 4 Arapahoe (9-1) at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday at Trailblazer. It will also be a bit of a revenge game for the Chargers. The Warriors eliminated Chatfield in the second round of the state tournament last year.

“They crushed us last year,” Lanuza said of the 20-9 postseason loss to Arapahoe a year ago. “I really think it’s going to be an incredible game. I think we are definitely more prepared this year.”

The Warriors are on an eight-game winning streak, including a 12-11 victory over defending state champion Cherry Creek this week. Chatfield knocked off the Bruins 14-9 before spring break.

“I think the girls are looking forward to the Arapahoe game,” Everett said. “We know Arapahoe is a great team. It’s a great benchmark going into the playoffs.”

Walker doesn’t want to waste the Chargers’ opportunity to be the first Jeffco girls’ lacrosse team to advance to a state championship game.

“We have some much talent on this team and we have to use it all to our advantage,” Walker said. “Last year we came up shorter than we wanted to. This year we have worked a lot harder and I think we’re ready to take it further.”
