LAKEWOOD — A picturesque goal in the 11th minute by sophomore Charles Doebbler was all the scoring D’Evelyn needed Tuesday night to advance into the quarterfinals of the Class 4A boys soccer state tournament.
No. 4 seed D’Evelyn snagged a 2-0 victory against No. 13 Fort Lupton at Lakewood Memorial Field. Sophomore Wesley Tedstrom scored an insurance goal in the 42nd minute while Jaguars’ senior goalkeeper Chris Linden picked up his seventh shutout of the season in net.

“It’s really been unbelievable how well we’ve played,” Linden said after the 4A Jeffco League champions improved to 15-2 on the season. “We’ve just found ways to win games and stuck with our system. It hasn’t always been the prettiest. We are just trying to get wins.”
Linden had six saves on the night. His best came in the 23rd minute on a header from Fort Lupton junior Genaro Arellano. It appeared Arellano’s header from point-blank range was destined for the back of the net, but Linden made a leaping save tipping the ball over the crossbar on the would-be, game-tying goal.
“Chris has been huge for us in goal all year for us,” D’Evelyn coach Paul Moline said. “We haven’t had to call on him a lot this season, but when we do that is what he does. He was clean on everything and doesn’t give up a second chance.”
The Blue Devils offensive punch of senior Victor Sanchez (21 goals) and Arellano (eight goals) were kept in check for the majority of the night. The Colorado 7 League champions outshot D’Evelyn 6 to 4, but couldn’t get one past Linden.
It was the first time all season Fort Lupton (12-3-2) had been shut out.
D’Evelyn made the most of its four shots. Doebbler’s goal was set up from a great pass from the outside from senior Christian Denton.

“Charley (Doebbler) has been waiting all season for that goal,” Moline said. “We talked about going wide and then finding the inside seam. We knew those lanes would be open. It was a great shot.”
It was only the second goal on the season for Doebbler.
“I was just in the right spot. Christian (Denton) played me a great ball,” Doebbler said. “I was putting in special effort (in practice) on that shot. It was handed to me on a silver platter.”
Tedstrom’s goal was a hard shot from the wing that went far post to beat Fort Lupton senior goalie Jesus Arellano. It was Tedstrom’s team-leading 11th goal on the season for the Jaguars.
Next on D’Evelyn’s plate is a state quarterfinal date Saturday, Nov. 1 against No. 5-seeded Niwot. The game will be played at Lakewood Memorial Field. Time of the game will be announced later this week. The Cougars took a 2-1 victory against Centaurus on Tuesday afternoon in their second-round game.
There is some playoff history between D’Evelyn and Niwot. In Moline’s words, the Cougars “shelled” the Jaguars 7-2 last year in the first round of the state tournament.
“To have them (Niwot) here (Lakewood Memorial Field), we are going to look forward to it,” Moline said.

When Centaurus and Air Academy met last season, it was a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Next season, both teams will have new coaches. (Ryan Casey/CHSAANow.com)
For each of the past four seasons, girls lacrosse’s semifinals have had one thing in common: Cherry Creek, Air Academy and Centaurus have all been there.
Well, those schools now have another common thread: all three programs — at this moment, the top three in the sport — will have new head coaches going into the 2015 season.
Centaurus’ Genny Horning has stepped down as the Warriors coach, BoCoPreps.com reported on Monday. That followed Air Academy’s Sean Harmon and Cherry Creek’s Brianne Tierney, who resigned within a day of one another in June.
Cherry Creek has since hired longtime assistant Kathryn Ames as its new coach. Air Academy has not yet made a new hire.
It may mean that new blood will rise. Chatfield, for instance, made its first-ever semifinal appearance last season; Arapahoe’s been in the quarterfinals for each of the past three seasons; Chaparral is another possibility.
Or old blood could reemerge. Kent Denver, which has won three state titles in school history, made four-consecutive semifinal appearances from 2009-12.
Now, this isn’t to say that Ames, or whoever Air Academy and Centaurus eventually hire, won’t have immediate success. Tierney won a state championship in her first season (2013). That could very well happen again.
And, mind you, Cherry Creek has appeared in every single state championship game in the sport’s 17-year sanctioned history. So change hasn’t seemed to bother the Bruins in the past.
But that these three giants of the sport are all changing coaches in the same offseason may signal there’s a bit of transition ahead for girls lacrosse, at least in the short term.

When Denver Science & Tech-Green Valley Ranch qualified for the Class 3A volleyball regionals on Monday, it marked the first time in school history a team was headed to the postseason.
The Raptors, 10-7-1 this season, earned the No. 36 seed, and are playing in Region 1 with top-seeded Eaton and No. 24 Middle Park.
It’s DSST-GVR’s first year as a sanctioned member of CHSAA.
“We’re super pumped about it,” athletic director Jamelle Austin said on Wednesday. “We’ve got to go to Eaton, Colorado at 4:30 on Halloween night, so we’re going to have some fun with it.”
The school put up a 20-foot poster congratulating the team, and is planning a pep rally on Thursday.
“Once we got the news, that was Monday morning, we made an announcement to the school and the girls were really excited,” Austin said.

It’s that time of the week where we rewrite the state football record book.
Longmont Christian quarterback Luke Puchino broke the state record for pass attempts in a loss to Justice last week when he threw the ball 71 times.

Two days earlier, Fairview quarterback Johnny Feauto tied the state record for completions with 39.
And those were just two of the record-book-worthy performances this week.
Puchino, a sophomore for the 8-man team, broke the previous record of 65 attempts set by Plainview’s Robbie Parker on Oct. 26, 1990. Puchnino’s record came on Saturday, nearly 24 years to the day of Parker’s performance.
“When I looked at the stat book (after the game), I was baffled,” said first-year Longmont Christian coach Josh Mendenhall. “When you’re in the middle of the game, you don’t think about that type of stuff.”
Puchino was 31-of-71 on Saturday for 505 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. The seven scores are now tied for the second-most in state history, the 505 yards are tied for the tenth-most, and the 31 completions are tied for No. 14 all-time.
Mendenhall has implemented a pass-first system in his first year.
“He’s perfect for that,” Mendenhall said of Puchino. “He’s got a great head for the game. He’s only a sophomore, but I think he has the mind of a senior. … He set pretty much all of our school records this season, as far as single-season.”
Justice won the game, 70-50.
“They were in our boat – small and they like to throw, too,” Mendenhall said. “We matched up well with them. The past few games, pretty all season, we’ve been outsized and pretty much gotten dominated on the line. We were both passing teams, so the clock wasn’t moving as much.”
Longmont Christian tight end Cameron Jauregui caught 17 of Puchino’s passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. The five scores are tied for No. 3 all-time, while the 17 catches are No. 7, and the yards are No. 8.
“We weren’t always trying to look for him, but he just gets open,” Mendenhall said of Jauregui. “If he’s open, we’re going to throw it to him.”
Feauto, meanwhile, had already etched his name into the state record book with his 536 yards of total offense against Grand Junction on Aug. 30. Last Thursday, he added a few more entries in going 39-of-56 with 544 yards and five touchdowns in Fairview’s 5A win against Legacy.
The completions tied a state record held by former Fairview quarterback Taylor Tharp (2002) and former Smoky Hill quarterback Robert Felberg (who set his record against Fairview in 2007).
The senior’s 56 attempts are tied for the seventh-most in state history, while the 544 yards are the fifth-most.
Though the game was completed on Thursday, we had to wait to confirm all the marks with Fairview until Sunday, as that’s when the Knights take official stats off the game film.
For a few hours on Sunday morning, Feauto’s yardage total sat 535, but later the coaching staff realized they missed a nine-yard completion which resulted in a fumble. So his mark is officially 544.
Fairview ended up with 572 passing yards as a team because wide receiver Tim Ryan also had a 28-yard completion. That’s the second-most in state history.
More could be on the way for Feauto during this crazy year, especially playing in the explosive Knights’ offense which averages a Class 5A-best 44.3 points and 497 yards per game.
Elsewhere last week:
NIWOT — Justin Barkow scored twice as No. 5 Niwot beat No. 12 Centaurus 2-1 on Tuesday to advance to the Class 4A boys soccer quarterfinals.
LITTLETON — No. 8-seeded Littleton got the lone goal from Hamadi AliAbid in the first half, then hung on for a 1-0 win over No. 9 Durango in the second round of the Class 4A boys soccer tournament on Tuesday.
The following information shows the designated home team for potential playoff football matchups to be completed by Saturday, Nov. 8. The formula for determining the home team is shown on page 51 of the football bulletin.
Sites are determined each Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the CHSAA office, one-and-a-half weeks prior to the next round.
