Tom Creech “ready to get to work” as Estes Park’s new football coach

Estes Park has turned to Tom Creech to take over its football program, announcing his hire on Tuesday.

Creech has 17 years of coaching experience, most recently as an assistant at Platte Valley. He has also been an assistant at Loveland.

“I am excited and proud to be a Bobcat and want to take this team to the next level,” Creech said via email on Tuesday. “I hope to get the youth, middle school, student body and community excited and deliver an awesome Friday night experience to go along with the bugling elk his fall! I have a great staff in place and we are ready to get to work this spring and summer.”

Creech takes over for Brian Lund, who was 13-21 in four seasons. Lund took over a program that was 0-10 in 2011, and turned it around to 6-3 in 2012.

Estes Park went 2-7 last season while playing in Class 1A.

The Bobcats will return a number of contributors in 2016, notably quarterback Jordan Duemig, but did graduate a lot on the defensive side of the ball.

Baseball rankings: Eads new No. 1 in Class 1A poll

It’s still early in the 2016 baseball season, but there has already been some shakeup in the Class 1A CHSAANow.com baseball rankings.

Eads takes over the top spot in the state after a 1-0 start to their season. Former No. 1 Dove Creek, who has stumbled out of the gate fell to No. 2.

Cotopaxi and Manzanola played their way into the still young rankings, coming in at No. 6 and No. 9 respectively.

Nothing has changed at the top of the 5A rankings as Regis Jesuit and Cherry Creek remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in those rankings.

Ralston Valley Chatfield baseball

Columbine is one of two newcomers in the poll as they land at No. 8 with Ralston Valley, the other newcomer, joining at No. 9.

The top of the 4A rankings has the same story as the 5A poll. D’Evelyn and Lewis-Palmer remain the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the class, with both teams undefeated on the year.

Though, the 4A rankings did see more turnover this week than any other class as Silver Creek (No. 7), Denver North (No. 8) and Air Academy (No. 9) all broke their way into this week’s poll.

And it was 3A who saw the least turnover of the week. Eaton still holds the No. 1 spot, but nine of last week’s 10 ranked teams all stayed in the poll this week, although a few did jump up or down in ranking.

Buena Vista is the lone newcomer in the poll, coming in at No. 10.

The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. During the regular season, they are released each Monday.

Sand Creek boys basketball in search of a new coach

After a disappointing 15-9 season that ended with a first round exit in the Class 4A boys basketball tournament, the Sand Creek Scorpions are in search of a new basketball coach.

CHSAANow.com has learned that Mark Bowers has been informed that the school intends to have the basketball program move on without him.

“It is time to take our boys basketball program to the next level,” athletic director Jared Felice said via text message. “We are grateful for Coach Bowers’ service to Sand Creek High School athletics.”

Coming into the 2015-16 season, there were high hopes for the Scorpions. They came in at No. 6 in the CHSAANow.com preseason rankings and many believed they would contend with Lewis-Palmer for the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference title.

The talent on the court, which included standouts D’Shawn Schwartz and Jordan Phillips, only helped to bolster those expectations.

After a couple of losses to 5A opponents, it appeared that Sand Creek was having difficulty on the defensive end of the floor.

A 93-54 loss to the Rangers on Jan. 6 showed just how outmatched the Scorpions were at that point of the season. They were able to bounce back and win their final six games of the season, avenging earlier losses to both Palmer Ridge and Vista Ridge in the process.

But the 54-52 overtime loss to the Jaguars ended a season that had been filled with such promise.

In his two years at Sand Creek, Bowers went 33-16. Felice said he hopes to name a new coach by May 1 at the latest.

Cherry Creek turns to Kent Dertinger as new boys basketball coach

Following the resignation of Mike Brookhart, Cherry Creek announced the hiring of Kent Derringer as the new boys basketball coach. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)

Cherry Creek didn’t have to look far to find its successor to Mike Brookhart.

The Bruins hired Kent Dertinger, the former junior varsity coach, as the new head coach of the boys basketball team.

The hire was first reported by the Union Street Journal and has been confirmed by CHSAANow.com.

As well as coaching basketball at Cherry Creek, Dertinger is also a math teacher at the school. He is also a graduate from Cherry Creek.

“We think Kent has the right makeup to put our program where it needs to be,” athletic director Jason Wilkins said. “The kids all rave about him as a teacher and as a coach. He’s going to put in the time and he’s going to put in the effort.”

The Bruins went 16-10 in Brookhart’s final season and advanced to the Class 5A Great 8 where they were beaten by Chatfield. He had been the Bruins’ head coach since 2002.

Wilkins noted that in his time as athletic director at Cherry Creek, he received more coaching applications for this boys basketball coaching search than he has for any other coaching position available at the school.
