No. 8 Monarch football stays undefeated, grinds out win against Broomfield

LOUISVILLE — Monarch football is 5-0 for the first time since 2011. The eighth-ranked Coyotes put an emphasis on the ground game to beat Broomfield 24-14 on Thursday night.

“Our kids, they have moxie,” Monarch coach Phil Bravo said. “They don’t quit. They’ll play hard for four quarters. If we’re going to be in a tight ballgame, I put my money on ours, because they really hard for four quarters.”

The last time Monarch was 5-0, Bravo’s 2011 team lost in the semifinals to Pine Creek after starting the season 12-0.

“It’s a great feeling,” outside linebacker Trey Storm said. “Coach was telling us how all these other players before us have put in all this work. It’s great to come out and do this for them.”

Monarch’s defense iced the game with a fumble. Storm came in and knocked the ball out, and Ben Cole came up with it. The defensive effort set up Ty Lanphear with a 35-yard field goal to sink Broomfield.

“That’s one of those gamechanger moments where you get the ball back, and that momentum is back in your hands,” Storm said. “That was huge for us.”

The Eagles did score with just over three minutes remaining to cut it to 17-14, but the ensuring onside kick went out of bounds. Monarch’s Justin Kiss then scored on a 49-yard touchdown with 1:39 to play.

“When you play a cross-town team, you take away records,” Bravo said. “No records are of any validity when you get on the field with these guys. It’s very rewarding.”

It was Kiss who started Monarch’s night off right. He punched in the first rushing touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter to put Monarch up 6-0 on Broomfield. A big-gain connection between quarterback C.J. Schmanski and Brenden Christensen put Monarch inside the 20, setting Kiss up.

Broomfield was threatening on the Monarch 23, but Storm sacked Steven Croell to knock the Eagles out of field goal range.

Broomfield elected instead to go for it. Croell looked deep to the endzone, but his pass was picked off by Jack Kapushion.

Monarch took advantage of the miscue and pushed down the field yet again. Ernesto Chavez capped the 80-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run to give Monarch a 14-0 lead.

“Our offensive line works so hard,” Storm said. “I can’t stress that enough. I watch them in practice every day, and I believe they work the hardest out of everyone in our league.”

However, Broomfield was able to get in the endzone just before halftime. Sam Godwin took a handoff and followed his blocks for a touchdown from nine yards out.

A field position battle ensued in the second half, and Monarch forced Broomfield into long drives. Monarch’s Ben Cole pinned Broomfield back at it’s own eight-yard-line, and the defense did it’s job.

Monarch took over at the 30 after a punt, and went to work on the ground yet again.

“We did a lot of things on the field that we practiced,” Bravo said. “That might sound a little redundant, but we executed things on the field that we felt that we could do very effectively against Broomfield.”

And again, Cole pushed Broomfield to a drive start deep in its own territory.

The Coyotes took the next drive down to the 15, trying to sink Broomfield. Chavez converted a huge fourth-down-and-one from the 44 to keep the drive going, then Broomfield committed a personal foul that continued the Monarch drive.

“We’ve shown some serious inconsistensies with our offensive line,” Bravo said. “We’ve been manipulating the starting lineup to try to come up with some sort of rhythm. I think tonight we showed some strides and improvements in that area.”

But, Lanphear missed a field goal to give Broomfield a chance. Storm’s forced fumble shut down the chance and gave Lanphear a second shot to give Monarch it’s best start since 2011.

“Our coaches work so hard to set us up for these games,” Storm said. “They spent hours putting together film and tasks for each player. They really put in a lot of time for us.

“One game at a time. Keep working, study each team hard. Execute each task and we’ll be just fine.”

No. 1 Lewis-Palmer volleyball tops No. 6 Palmer Ridge in Monumental rivalry match

MONUMENT — According to the Lewis-Palmer student section, Palmer Ridge kids eat pizza with a fork. According to the Palmer Ridge kids – and a good old fashion eye test – the Bears will be giving the Rangers a run for their money on the volleyball court in the not too distant future.

Lewis-Palmer left its cross-town rivals’ gym with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 sweep, but it was anything but easy to come by. In fact, it may have been the toughest challenge that the Rangers (13-0 overall, 1-0 Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) have seen to date.

“Pretty close between them and Valor,” coach Wade Baxter said.

The Rangers did’t have anything to overly fret about. They’re playing like the defending Class 4A state champions (and No. 1-ranked team) that they are. But after dispatching Eaton fairly easily on Saturday, they were thrown an entirely different kind of challenge against not just a league opponent, but a big-time rival.

“We preface a lot of our season on matches like this,” junior Adelaide Feek said. “For us, it gives us a lot of momentum rolling into the rest of conference play.”

It was momentum that they stole in a way toward the end of the first set. The Bears (11-2, 0-1) held a 23-20 lead thanks to a Kori Woods kill, but a service error gave the serve, and control, back to Lewis-Palmer.

The Rangers held several the rest of the way and Jadie DeLange scored the final point, sending the visiting Rowdy Rangers students into a frenzy.

In the second set, freshman Mac Russ did everything she could to get the Bears an early lead. The Rangers kept it close and didn’t let little errors send the set out of reach.

Kessandra Krutsinger came up with a timely kill to cut the Bears lead to one and then tied the set on a block.

The entire second set, Krutsinger just seemed to be the person who was always at the right place in the right time.

“I practice that way, I play that way,” she said. “It’s habit and it’s a team thing. We work together as a team.”

And it was a total team win for the Rangers. Taylor Buckley and Riley Putnicki led the attack with eight kills each. Krutsinger added seven of her own and also had five of the team’s seven blocks.

For Palmer Ridge, it was the freshmen who stood out, as they have all year. Riley Simpson had eight kills and Russ had six. Junior Summer Reflogal also got in on the fun with seven.

But the overall takeaway was not the loss, but that against what has been the measuring stick in Colorado volleyball in recent years, the Bears held their own.

“I’m completely proud of the way they played,” coach Jessen Miller said. “There were a few errors here and there. Honestly it came down to our errors more than them beating us.”

There is time to correct the errors that both teams claims to have plagued them on Thursday. If they’re both able to clean up their play a bit, a potential rematch in the state tournament would be a must-see event.

It would be monumental.

Football roundup: Longmont knocks off another No. 1 team — Holy Family

(greeleywestathletics.com)

Longmont pulled off one of the most eye-opening upsets of the 2017 football season on Thursday, knocking off top-ranked Holy Family 39-3 in Class 3A.

The Trojans led 11-3 at halftime, and then opened things up in the second half.

Holy Family did lose star quarterback Stone Samaras to an injury four plays into the game, according to Brad Cochi of BoCoPreps.com. (Here’s a link to BoCoPreps’ game story.)

Still, Longmont’s rushing game was extremely successful. Cruz Garcia scored twice, quarterback Oakley Dehning threw a touchdown pass to Jaden Elkins and rushed for a score, and Beck Fieth also added a rushing touchdown for the Trojans.

As Cochi pointed out, it is Longmont’s second win over a No. 1 team this season. The Trojans beat then-No. 1 Pueblo East on Sept. 1, and later moved up to No. 1 themselves. A week later, though, Greeley West toppled the Trojans, starting a three-game losing streak.

“It’s a statement win because we kind of had our backs to the wall and we knew that if we let another game slip, it would really hurt our season,” Longmont linebacker Austin Hassler told BoCoPreps.com.

Now, though, Longmont looks to have figured things out.

Goal-line stand lifts Dakota Ridge football over Wheat Ridge

ARVADA — Defense was the name of the game from start to finish Thursday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Dakota Ridge’s goal-line stand in the final seconds preserved a much-needed 14-7 victory over rival Wheat Ridge in the non-league football game.

“That was just exciting. We let them drive and we bent, but we didn’t break on the goal-line,” Dakota Ridge senior linebacker Anthony Salvi said of the final drive of the game. “We had great energy on the sideline and we just erupted on the field. It was a great way to end that game.”

The Eagles (2-3 record) ended their 2-game losing streak. The Farmers (1-4) weren’t able to muster up an offensive score in their third straight loss.

“We needed this. We needed something positive to happen for us,” Dakota Ridge coach Ron Woitalewicz said. “This was a typical Wheat Ridge/Dakota Ridge game. They are always going to come down like this. It’s always a 7- or 3-point game.”

It was a nail-biter in the final minutes after Dakota Ridge failed to ice the game late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles were stopped on Wheat Ridge’s goal-line and a 21-yard field goal attempt failed with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Wheat Ridge quarterback Anthony Tate nearly single-handedly guided the Farmers from their own 15-yard line to Dakota Ridge’s 2-yard line. The junior had six runs for 42 yards and also had a 31-yard completion to senior Payton Dietrich on the game-deciding drive.

“He (Tate) is probably the smallest kid out here. He plays like the biggest guy out here,” Wheat Ridge senior Dominic Trujillo said. “I have so much respect for that kid being 5-foot-6 and playing like he can go to college and be a quarterback.”

On fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line in the waning seconds, Tate tried to cap of an 85-yard touchdown drive to tie things up and send it into overtime. However, Dakota Ridge senior safety Landen Nordbrock had the hit of the game tackling Tate at the 3-yard line as the quarterback attempted to sprint toward the far pylon near the Eagles’ sideline. The stop turned the ball over on downs to Dakota Ridge.

“We figured (Wheat Ridge) would have to spread it out and put it in (Tate’s) hands,” Woitalewicz said. “We tried to have enough guys on the perimeter. My one concern was he would run back the other direction.”

Nordbrock was able to come up and make the hit on Tate to keep him out of the end zone.

Wheat Ridge’s defense also played well and provided the lone score for the Farmers. Trujillo picked off a deflected pass from Dakota Ridge quarterback Drew Dominic on the Eagles’ first drive of the game. He returned it 40 yard to the end zone.

“We came in confident and when that happened our confidence went way up,” Trujillo said of his pick-6 that started the scoring.

Dakota Ridge took advantage of a special team miscue by the Farmers to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. A punt by the Eagles hit a Wheat Ridge player and Dakota Ridge recovered on the Farmers’ 33-yard line. Two plays later junior running back Jered Garcia scored from 15 yards out.

The only other scored of the game was a 14-yard touchdown pass from Dominic to junior Justin Sanchez midway through the second quarter to give Dakota Ridge a 14-7 lead. It capped off an 80-yard, 11-play drive.

“That’s really big,” Salvi said of the win before the start of conference play. “We were kind of dragging a little bit. This will give us a nice push going into league next week. I’m excited to build off of this for sure.”

Dakota Ridge and Wheat Ridge both have their homecoming games next week.

The Farmers square off against George Washington on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Jeffco Stadium. It will also be Wheat Ridge’s conference opener in the 4A Mountain League.

“It’s time to get going now,” Trujillo said. “We need to prove our doubters wrong.”

The Eagles face Gateway on Friday, Oct. 6, at Jeffco Stadium in what will be the 4A Plains League opener for Dakota Ridge.
