Wheat Ridge is the new No. 1 team in Class 4A. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
Wheat Ridge made a huge leap in taking over the top spot in the Class 4A baseball poll this week.
The Famers, No. 6 a week ago, beat then-No. 1 D’Evelyn, No. 5 Green Mountain, and No. 2 Evergreen as part of a 4-0 run last week.
They received five of the 12 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, but it was the most any team got this week. Wheat Ridge also totalled 105 points, placing them just ahead of D’Evelyn, which got four first-place votes and 101 points.
Lewis-Palmer, which received two first-place tallies, is No. 3 in 4A this week. Evergreen dropped to No. 4, and Pueblo West completes the top-five.
The 4A poll added two newcomers: No. 6 Erie and No. 7 Palisade.
Green Mountain (No. 8), Ponderosa (No. 9) and Montrose (No. 10) round out the 4A poll.
The 5A ranking also saw a lot of change this week.
Cherokee Trail led three newcomers at No. 7 in the poll. Pine Creek (No. 9) and Legend (No. 10) also joined.
Rocky Mountain stayed atop the ranking with 11 of the 15 first-place votes.
The three other No. 1s also remained the same: Eaton (3A), Rye (2A) and Eads (1A).
Neither the 3A poll, nor 1A poll, had any newcomers this week. 2A added Swink (No. 9).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.
These will serve as the final polls of the season, as 1A’s regular season ended last Saturday, 2A’s is set to close this Saturday, and 3A, 4A, and 5A will end next Tuesday.

NORTHGLENN — The Community Christian baseball team had breezed to a 12-1 record with a run differential of 144-24 and the best earned run average (1.55) in Class 1A entering Monday.
They featured a powerful lineup led by Jake Hodge, the all-classification leader in batting average (.737). The Crusaders were also sitting pretty at No. 2 in the latest 1A rankings released Monday morning, receiving five first-place votes and only looking up at Eads in the poll.
Of course, when it comes to rivalry games, stats can be thrown out and chaos can ensue.
Community Christian experienced a little of both during a wacky 7-6 home win in eight innings on Monday over No. 9 Cornerstone Christian at Jaycee Park. The victory kept a lengthy winning streak against 1A District 2 competition alive, a streak that spans 41 games and six seasons.
But that wasn’t on the minds of the players or coaches in a heated battle.
“I’m just happy to get a win honestly,” Hodge said. “This is the first extra inning game I remember playing in a long time.”
“We always enjoy playing that team,” Community Christian coach Dennis Cooper added. “It seems like we always play our best games against each other. That game is a lot of fun. We were fortunate enough to come out on top.”
In a game brimming with timely hits and great defensively plays, but also a number of errors, sloppy plays, and close calls, the contest ended much as it had started: in unusual fashion.
The Crusaders’ Justin Werzinski, stepping into the batter’s box in the eighth with the bases loaded, hit a grounder. The Cornerstone fielder threw home in plenty of time before pinch runner Devin Obland crossed the plate. But the ump called the runner safe.
“First of all, the umpire took about three days there to make a call and I’m going, ‘Why didn’t he call him out?’ The catcher certainly had the ball in his glove and then he said the kid didn’t have his foot on the plate,” Cooper said excitedly.
“To play that game and think of all the little things in all those innings, any one of those plays that could’ve gone either way, it’s weird to end it like that.”
The call sealed a rivalry win for Community Christian, one that was both frustrating with miscues and exciting with tremendous efforts by a number of players.

Jake Hodge of Community Christian. (Brock Laue/CHSAANow.com)
One of those standouts, of course, was Hodge, who came through with the game hanging in the balance.
First, the 6-foot-3 senior cracked a single to drive in a run in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at six. Then, he stepped onto the mound in relief and proceeded to shut out the Bulldogs in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
Cornerstone Christian left several runners stranded on base as Hodge himself made a few miscues atypical for the veteran, but his stuff was still good enough to keep the Crusaders firmly in the game.
“Jake’s stats speak for themselves,” Cooper raved. “He’s the best hitter in 1A in the state. He’s definitely one of the top five players in 1A. Any team Jake would be on, he would mean a lot.”
Cornerstone, which fell to 5-6 and 3-2 in 1A District 2, scored all six of its runs in the 2nd inning.
Their own star player, Carlos Ruiz, helped keep them in the game with some good pitching of his own and a couple critical hits. Ruiz, a senior, was named second team all-state in 2014.
Community Christian has gained a little breathing room in district play with a 5-0 record, 13-1 overall, and a nice multiple game lead in the standings while owning the tiebreaker over Cornerstone.
The program has grown accustomed to district championships and state playoff appearances in recent years. Hodge is quick to praise the coaching staff for their success.
“I would certainly have to give that credit to our coaching staff, because we have a lot of inexperienced guys, guys who are athletes, but not necessarily baseball players,” Hodge said, describing a commonality in small-school sports.
“Our coaching staff, every season their job is to take these athletes, take their athletic ability and kind of mold that into a baseball player. For them to be able to do that, it’s really great to see.”

Grant Witherspoon and D’Evelyn now sit atop the Class 4A baseball poll. (Dennis Pleuss)
D’Evelyn and Rye took over atop their respective baseball rankings on Monday.
D’Evelyn is 13-0 and now heads the Class 4A poll from CHSAANow.com after receiving nine of the 12 first-place votes and totalling 106 points, well ahead of No. 2 Evergreen’s 86 points.
Former No. 1 Green Mountain was upset by Valor Christian last week, and fell to fifth. Valor Christian joined the 4A poll at No. 9 this week.
Rye (10-0), meanwhile, is the new No. 1 in 2A after last week’s No. 1 Resurrection Christian lost to Brush, the No. 7 team in 3A at the time.
That ranking added No. 10 Kiowa (7-3).

Fruita Monument is now ranked No. 4 in 5A. (Tom Hoganson)
In 5A, Fruita Monument’s rise up the ranking continued. The Wildcats, who are now 17-0, bumped up two spots to No. 4. Included in last week’s 3-0 record was a win over Montrose, which was ranked No. 8 in 4A at the time.
Rocky Mountain continued to lead the 5A poll, and got 11 of the 15 first-place votes. Mountain Vista also held firm at No. 2.
Behind them, Cherry Creek pushed up to No. 3, then Fruita sits fourth and Rock Canyon rounds out the top five.
Fairview dropped to No. 6 and Mullen moved up to No. 7. Monarch is eighth, Denver East is ninth and Grandview is tenth.
The Nos. 1 teams in 3A (Eaton) and 1A (Eads) both held on to their respective top spots this week.
Sterling (No. 9) joined the 3A poll, while 1A added Nucla (No. 8).
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Three teams joined the Class 5A baseball rankings this week, and no rise was greater than that of Rock Canyon, which now finds itself in the No. 5 spot.
The Jaguars (11-1) went 3-0 last week, and led a host of new teams to CHSAANow.com baseball polls. Also joining in 5A were No. 9 Mullen (7-3) and No. 10 Denver East (11-1).
Rock Canyon beat then-No. 8 ThunderRidge and then-No. 9 Heritage last week. The Jaguars are off to their best start since opening 8-0 in 2009-10.
Mullen, meanwhile, is unbeaten against in-state teams at 7-0. And Denver East’s lone loss came to Rock Canyon in its opener, 9-7, on March 12.
Rocky Mountain remained atop the 5A poll, and Mountain Vista stayed in No. 2. Fairview bumped up to No. 3, jumping just ahead of Cherry Creek, which is now No. 4.
Fruita Monument is up one spot to No. 7 and Grandview is No. 8.
The other No. 1 teams in each classification also remained the same. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A), Resurrection Christian (2A) and Eads (1A).
The 4A poll added No. 7 Ponderosa, and 3A has two newcomers — Valley (No. 9) and St. Mary’s (No. 10).
The 2A ranking added No. 8 McClave/Wiley, as well as No. 10 Yuma.
There are four new teams in this week’s 1A poll: No. 5 Primero, No. 6 Fleming, No. 7 Springfield and No. 10 Antonito.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Rocky Mountain, and sophomore Tyler Hyland, are the new No. 1 5A baseball. (Dennis Pleuss)
Another week, another new team atop the Class 5A baseball rankings.
Rocky Mountain became the latest team to ascend to the top of CHSAANow.com’s poll this week when the Lobos received eight of the 15 first-place votes and edged No. 2 Mountain Vista. Cherry Creek, the former No. 1, fell to third this week.
Rocky is the third team to lead the 5A ranking this season following preseason No. 1 Regis Jesuit and Creek.
Fairview stayed put at fourth in this week’s poll, and Grandview stayed at fifth. Behind them, three new teams joined: No. 6 Monarch (6-0-1), No. 7 Fruita Monument (12-0) and No. 9 Heritage (7-2).
ThunderRidge is No. 8 this week, while Regis is No. 10.
In 1A, there’s also a new No. 1. Eads takes over after getting four of the eight first-place votes. Former No. 1 Holly dropped to third. Community Christian is second.
That 1A poll added Granada (No. 8) and Cornerstone Christian (No. 9).
The other No. 1 teams stayed the same this week. Those are Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A).
Other newcomers include No. 9 Wheat Ridge in 4A; No. 8 La Junta and No. 9 Bayfield in 3A; and No. 9 Ellicott in 2A.

Cherry Creek is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A baseball. (Jack Eberhard/JacksActionShots.com)
After beating two ranked teams last week, including then-No. 1 Regis Jesuit, Cherry Creek has taken over atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball rankings.
The Bruins beat Regis Jesuit on Monday and then-No. 4 Legend on Wednesday, giving them three wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did drop a 5-1 decision to then-No. 10 Mountain Vista on Friday.
However, voters still gave Cherry Creek eight of the 15 first-place votes that were cast this week, and the Bruins totalled 124 points to lead the poll. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Vista each got three first-place votes; those two teams are No. 2 and 3, respectively.
Fairview received the other first-place vote, and moved up one spot to fourth this week. Grandview, which got a big win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge on Friday, rounds out the top five.
Regis Jesuit fell from No. 1 to No. 6, ThunderRidge is No. 7, and three newcomers complete 5A’s ranking this week: No. 8 Pine Creek, No. 9 Arapahoe and No. 10 Ralston Valley.
There’s also a new No. 1 team in 1A, where Holly takes over. The other No. 1 teams — Green Mountain (4A), Eaton (3A) and Resurrection Christian (2A) — remained the same this week.
With many programs heading out of state for spring break, or simply taking time off, the next rankings will release on April 6.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association.

Regis Jesuit girls basketball leads the preseason 5A poll. (Ray Chen/arrayphoto.com)
Regis Jesuit girls basketball, winner of the last two Class 5A titles, heads the classification’s preseason poll.
The Raiders received 11 of the 16 first-place votes in CHSAANow.com’s poll, which was released Monday. They also had 139 overall points, edging preseason No. 2 Broomfield (130).
Regis hasn’t lost to an in-state team since dropping a game to ThunderRidge in Feb. 2013. That’s a span of 28 consecutive wins against Colorado teams. The school is also 42-1 against in-state teams since the start of the 2012-13 season.
Broomfield lost in last season’s 4A title game, and is making the move to 5A this season.
Grandview is No. 3, and No. 4 Highlands Ranch and No. 5 Fossil Ridge round out the top 5.
Also ranked in the preseason are No. 6 Lakewood, No. 7 Cherry Creek, No. 8 Rampart, No. 9 Horizon and No. 10 ThunderRidge.
In 4A, Valor Christian is the preseason No. 1. Pueblo South is No. 2, and defending champion Mesa Ridge is No. 3. Holy Family, winner of last year’s 3A title which has moved up to 4A, is No. 7.
Sterling leads 3A’s preseason poll. Pagosa Springs, last season’s runner-up, is No. 2.
Yuma is the favorite in 2A. It was runner-up last season to Lutheran, which opens as No. 3.
Briggsdale heads the 1A ranking. Defending champion Norwood is No. 3.
The rankings, voted upon by coaches and select media members, are the official polls of the Association. Polls are released each Monday.

Regis Jesuit is No. 1 in this week’s 5A baseball ranking. (Matt Mathewes/MVPSportsPics.com)
For the second consecutive week, there’s a new team atop CHSAANow.com’s Class 5A baseball ranking. This time, Regis Jesuit has ascended to the top.
The Raiders, now 14-3, went 3-0 last week — including a 7-5 win over then-No. 6 ThunderRidge. They are now 9-0 in the always tough Continental League, and are riding an 11-game winning streak.
Fairview actually received the same amount of first-place votes (six) that Regis Jesuit did, but remained at No. 2 with 125 overall points to the Raiders’ 137. The Knights are now 16-1 — 13-0 against in-state teams.
Columbine stayed at No. 3 after going 2-1 last week. Included was a 12-6 win over Chatfield, which at the time was ranked No. 1. But the Rebels also dropped a game to Arvada West, which had an amazing week with wins over the Nos. 1, 3 and 8 teams.
Arvada West jumped into the rankings at No. 6, just behind No. 5 Chatfield and No. 4 Mountain Vista.
ThunderRidge dropped to No. 7, Rocky Mountain is No. 8 and Chaparral is No. 9. Cherry Creek rejoined the poll at No. 10.
There are also new teams atop the 3A and 2A polls. In 3A, Eaton received nine of the 10 first-place votes to overtake Holy Family, which dropped to No. 2. In 2A, Resurrection Christian got five of the seven first-place votes and took over for Swink, which also fell to No. 2.
Windsor retained its spot atop the 4A ranking, and Stratton held firm atop 1A.
The 4A poll added Pueblo East at No. 9, and also saw Lewis-Palmer move from No. 5 to No. 3, and Evergreen go from No. 7 to No. 4.
3A added Bayfield (No. 8), while 2A added Limon (No. 9) and Lyons (No. 10).
With the regular season ending Tuesday, these rankings will serve as the final poll of the regular season.
